Alongside all our hard work in maths (properties of shape) and English (we've just started reading our new book: Krindlekrax), Azure Class have been learning all about animation, and can tell you all about thaumatropes, zoetropes and much more besides! We are currently in the progress of creating our own stop-motion animation short film - and if you're not sure what that is, make sure you ask us!
It has been a very busy week for all of year six. We are feeling very relieved that our SATs tests are over but also feeling very proud of ourselves for all of our hard work. We want to say a big thank you to everyone across the school who has helped us through our tests. Also, a big thank you to all of our mentors for joining us for SATs breakfast and checking on us throughout this week.
In English we have been reading a short story from Anthony Horowitz's 'Horror' series. It was not for the
faint-hearted! We wrote a report about our own haunted items- read them at your own peril!!!
We have also been doing a topic on internet safety. We have learnt about cyber-bullying, the importance of keeping passwords safe, use of emojis and in-app purchasing. To summarise our topic, we have designed our own board games to spread these important messages.

In Violet class we have been reading and learning about ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. So far we have written our own stories based on the book. Some stories were sensational and brilliant. In addition, we have been describing the forest from the book with expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbial and figurative language. By Daniel U
In science, we have been learning about mammals and specifically humans. We have considered puberty and found out that both men and women have a lot in common. Did you know that everyone starts out as female when they are inside their mother’s womb until the genes activate? By Sneha

DIARY
HEADTEACHER®S’ MESSAGE
This week has been SATs tests in Year 6. No
matter what your views are about testing in
primary schools, (and there are many), our
children work very hard throughout their
time at school and this year’s cohort have
done themselves proud. I am not talking
about how well they have done in the tests,
as they are sent away for marking; I am
talking about their attitude, their resilience
and their support for each other. I would like
to say to them, well done and thank you.
Keep it up for the rest of the year.
How well we do at school, whether that be in
tests or in grasping the wider curriculum, is
closely linked to attendance. Although
improving, the school is likely to fall way
short of our attendance target of 96%.
Please ensure you do all you can to get your
children to school on time every day. Only
illness and exceptional circumstances are
reasons for being away from school. The law
around school attendance is there to ensure
our children access the best education so
that they can succeed in life.
If you have children who are pre-school age
0-4, or know families in your neighbourhood
who do, we will be hosting two meetings for
parents on Tuesday 16th May. One meeting
will be from 9.00am to 9.30am and the other
from 6.30pm - 7.00pm. This will be to discuss
the changes to nursery provision nationally
and what we want to create at Kelvin Grove.
It is really important that you attend to have
your say.
Finally as all adults in and around schools
have a responsibility to be role models to
children, please smoke well away from the
school gates. Also, please remember that we
should all use kind and respectful language
when in the earshot of our children. Many
Thanks.
CLUBXTRA & BREAKFAST CLUB SERVICES
We would like to remind parents/carers to
call or email the office
[email protected] if your
child is in school but will not be attending
their contracted ClubXtra day, so we can
amend our after school registers accordingly.
In addition, if you no longer require our
ClubXtra or Breakfast Club services you will
need to fill in a cancellation form (4 weeks’
notice) or you will continue to be charged
according to your contract.

Summer Fair
We are a mere 8 weeks away from the
summer fair! Where has the time gone? With
SATs behind us we can finally concentrate on
pulling this together. Please join us at the PTA
meeting on Wednesday May 17th at 9:15 am
to discuss the specifics of the fair. We need all
the help we can muster in the weeks leading
up to the fair as well as at the fair itself.
If anyone is interested in having their own
stall at the fair please get in touch, the price is
£25. At this time we would like to invite
children to enter our film festival. Any child
can enter a film that they have made, no
longer than 3 minutes. This can be an original
'script' or a scene from their
favourite film. These can then
be uploaded to the PTA Facebook
page. /friends of kelvin Grove (PTA).
After the PTA academy reviews all the
films, Oscars will be awarded for best film and
other categories at the fair. The deadline is
July 1st. We look forward to seeing our
budding filmmakers!
We hope you all received the PTA newsletter
that went out last Friday. As you can see,
there are a few other events coming up
before the fair! Please note on your
calendars.
Reception - Magenta Class
Our next stop around the world this week has been India. We’ve enjoyed looking at pictures of India, and looking at how it is different to where we live. We have also been learning about the Bengal tiger and have even written a poem about one. We
thought hard about what actions we could use when we performed our poem for the other class.
Scarlet class made a life-size collage of the Bengal tiger to use in our performance. We have also been busy making paper-plate peacocks and designing Rangoli patterns! We even had an Indian wedding, and danced to Bollywood music.
We are excited to learn more about India next week. The children will
be going to India in their minds, so we need to make sure we have our
passports ready!
Rainbow - Green Class
Magenta are learning about The Fire Services this week as part of our topic ‘people who help us’. We have been reading an information book and writing fact files. We were really lucky to have a visit from the local firemen from Forest Hill . They came in uniform in their fire engines & we got to sit in the fire engine!
We have been also doing lots of role play and talking about what we do if we need to ring the emergency services.
Nursery
Green class have been learning their number bonds to 10 this week. There are lots of ways to visualise and memorise single digits that make 10. We have made mo-biles, Numicon patterns and played matching games to help us. We played number bond tennis and have a class rap called 'Number Bond Talent' that has us all hip-hopping around the room.
In English we have been reading traditional tales and retelling them with puppets made from wooden spoons. In our own class version of Little Red Riding Hood we changed the main character to Little Green Bonnet - a boy who goes to visit Mrs Waine, but she turns out to be an evil fox in disguise. Luckily our hero, Mr Hyde, jumps to the rescue and chases the fox away. You will be pleased to know they all live happily ever after...
Year 2 - Gold Class
Year 1 - Coral Class
Gold Class have been fully immersed in our text, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. In English, we have flipped the story around and considered what it would have been like for those brazen seagulls! We gave each seagull their own personality and made character profiles to describe their likes and dislikes, as well as their proudest and most embarrassing moments. Now we are busy rewriting the story from the perspective of their leader, Bert, and are looking forward to sharing our stories at the end of the week.
We have also been trying to help Mr Grinling make a lunchbox that will keep those pesky seagulls out of his delicious peach surprise. We investigated what makes a good lunchbox and then designed our own. We want to make sure our lunchboxes protect the food, while still being appealing to Mr Grinling. We are very excited to decorate and waterproof our designs next week!
This week in Coral class, we have been trying to trap a dragon!
After finding a lost poster from the KG BFG (FYI – there’s a giant on the loose!), we decided to write some instructions for how to trap his dangerous dragon!
Firstly, we left secret messages around the school and posted our instructions underneath them. Then we found our instructions were gone, so we are hoping you all know
how to trap a dragon if you see one! Don’t worry, we have learnt our instructions off by heart just ask any of the Year 1’s for help if you see a dragon out there!
Year 3 - Emerald Class
Emerald Class have been learning all about our active planet, specifically earthquakes and the different ways the tectonic plates move on the earth's surface. We learnt about the different tectonic plate boundaries (transform, divergent and convergent) and used Oreos (yes Oreos!) to show how these plates move around on top of the mantle! Great fun and great learning had by all!
