INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
How preoccupied and anxious are you over preserving and
maintaining a particular standard of wealth? It is easy to
develop an unhealthy relationship with our possessions and
invest ourselves more in their protection and growth than in
our relationship with God. Greed can overtake us, often
without our immediate notice. Anxiety of heart can find us
living more with sorrow and grief than with freedom and
joy. We can never allow things to replace God, and we
always have to keep our possessions and wealth in proper
perspective. Once they begin to control us, we have a
problem. Anxiety and worry can become our greatest sins.
There is a joyful life to be discovered when we discover true
faith!
Renovation Committee Update The fundraising committee is finishing up the first phase of
contacting parishioners – our main focus remains the same -
to keep our parishioners informed, to update parishioners, and
to answer any questions you may have. Unfortunately, we
were unable to personally meet with all parishioners at this
time. Those that have not been contacted or have not picked
up their pledge cards will receive them in the mail sometime
this week. We need your help to reach our goal.
We will keep an update of the progress of the Capital
Campaign along with the presentation and other updates on
our website at hrcatholic.org/renovations (menu option
“Parish Life” / “Renovations/Capital Campaign”). The
presentation can also be found on our YouTube channel or
Facebook page. Questions and comments are always
welcome. A FAQ document can now be found on the page as
well. If you have any other questions, please contact the
parish office.
CHOIR The choir at Holy Redeemer sings on various Sundays and
major feast days. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at
7:00 p.m. We will be starting back up soon, so all are
welcome to join us. If you would like more information or

Religious Education
Sharing the Gospel When you put Jesus first in your life, you will have everything you need. Having a lot of stuff won't really make you or God happy. God doesn't want you to keep your blessings to yourself. God wants you to share what he has given you. Be "rich" in only the things that God cares about. The closer you grow with God, the happier you will be. Prayer Dear God, help me to remember what is really important to you and give me the will to share what I have with others. Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself giving something away to someone who doesn't have much. Mission for the Week I will share my toys and books with others this week.
Please prayerfully Consider helping us out this year. Could you give a little of your time to help form our youth and maybe even learn something along the way? Question:
The Assumption isn't in the Bible. What proof do we have that
it really happened?
Answer:
Since the beginning of the Church, Christians have venerated
the relics of the saints. We can see this in the catacombs of
Rome, in the crypts of churches, and in the reliquaries that
contain tiny fragments of bone. Throughout Church history,
there have been no relics of Mary nor any legitimate claims to
her bones. Even the tomb of Mary, visited as a site of
pilgrimage, stood empty. At the Council of Chalcedon in 451,
the Roman emperor asked the bishop of Jerusalem to bring
Mary's relics to the council. The bishop reported that there
were no relics of Mary. Upon finding her empty tomb, the
Apostles had concluded that her body was taken up into
heaven. Soon afterward, the Church began celebrating this
miraculous event.
The Assumption is an article of faith. Within the context of
salvation, its meaning and logic are clear. Being born without
original sin, Mary did not suffer its consequences. She is
already participating in what we, too, will experience one day
- the resurrection and glorification of our bodies as they reunite
with our souls.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times at Holy Redeemer will be Thursday, August 15, 12:05 (noon) and 7:00 p.m.
The next BOOK CLUB meeting will he Tuesday, August 13th at 6:45pm. The book selection for this month is “Of Men and Mary: How Six Men Won the Greatest Battle of Their Lives” by Christine Watkins. A brief description: This book contains the awe-inspiring stories of six men whose lives were changed when they entrusted their lives to Mary. The six men were a murderer, a sweet lamb who lost it all, a man who literally died and then came back to life, a football player tackled by the Blessed Mother, a man caught up in illicit sexual liaisons, and a man whose marriage was as good as dead. Their stories illustrate the reality of the divine grace of Jesus through Mary and the triumph of the human will for good over evil and light over darkness. Although it is about men the book is for everyone. All are welcome.
GOSPEL MEDITATION
The cake is frosted, the guests have arrived, and the gifts are piled high. One by one,
the packages are opened, and one by one, the child reaches for another. Who among
us hasn't seen a child who appears crestfallen when the gifts run out? Even the
abundance isn't quite enough. Today's Gospel tackles a key question in the spiritual
life - grateful or greedy? "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest." We all recognize
the need to be practical. Raising a family, there's need to save for all sorts of things
beyond normal day-to-day costs - medical bills, family vacations, private school, rainy
day funds, retirement. Jesus doesn't critique the rich man for simply having an
abundant harvest. It's his mentality. Does the rich man sell off the extra to make the
needed repairs to the back fence or to invest in some additional livestock to grow the
business? Perhaps donate some of the excess to the poor? No. "You have so many
good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!" The man wants to
hoard and indulge with no concern for others.
Jesus doesn't condemn prudent saving or owning necessary items. He calls us to purify our attitudes. "Guard against all greed...
one's life does not consist of possessions." We are called to be good stewards. This means being practical. It also means remaining
open to God's invitation with our resources. Are we tithing to our parish? Do we give alms to the poor? Does our weekly
entertainment far outstrip what we offer to others? Life is not about "stor[ing] up treasure for [our]selves." The more we grow in
gratitude and generosity, the more we become "rich in what matters to God."
MASS SCRIPTURE READINGS & REFLECTIONS
This Week: August 4 – Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading – Ecclesiastes 2:21-23:
For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart
with which he has labored under the sun? (Ecc 2:22)
Ecclesiastes speaks of the dangers inherent in vanity. What do you
see as an effective means for avoiding self-importance and excessive
pride?
Second Reading – Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11:
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When
Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. (Col 3:3-4)
Paul encourages the believers in Colossae to remain focused on
"what is above" where Christ resides and "not of what is on earth." In what ways is this a spiritual challenge for you?
Gospel – Luke 12:13-21: Then [Jesus] said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of
possessions." (Lk 12:15)
Jesus tells the crowd the parable of the rich fool in response to those overly concerned with possessions. In your view, what is the
right amount of material goods for people?

How is your faith in the Lord a source of courage for you in troubled times?

The author of Hebrews defines faith as "the realization of what is hoped for and
evidence of things not seen" and holds up Abraham as a model of faith. Who would
you see as a model of faith in your faith community?

"You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will
come." (Lk 12:40)
Jesus warned Peter of the responsibilities entrusted to followers of Christ. How well
do you think you are stewarding the gifts God has given you?

AC Swing, a band comprised of many talented local musicians, will once again be performing their big band style music at the Crown Pavilion in New Bremen on August 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Their well-known music has been enjoyed throughout the area for many years. The New Bremen churches will be providing a free cookout an hour prior to this event as well as games and activities for the children. We ask that you bring beverages and come prepared to enjoy a night of good fellowship and entertainment.
FATIMA, USA: The Spiritual Center of Maria Stein will
commemorate Our Lady’s apparition and message at Fatima on
Friday, August 9, at 7:30 p.m. There will also be confessions, a
candlelight rosary, and a procession through the woods. Please
bring your own lawn chair for seating and dress appropriately.

of church.
RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY for the Community Orchard,
the Girl Scout project of Taylor Paul’s, will be Wednesday, August

Demonstration, and Car Seat Safety.
Answer: Giving generously to the needs of the Church and the poor is an ancient idea, one that's been with us throughout Christian history and within the Jewish tradition as well. In the Old Testament, the Mosaic Law required that one tenth of produce be offered to God. Leviticus and Deuteronomy describe offering one tenth of harvested grains or fruit, one tenth of pressed wine and oil, and every tenth firstborn livestock. The origin of the word "tithe" is the Anglo-Saxon word for "tenth." These offerings were given to the priests for sacrifice, sustenance, or further distribution. Jesus advises almsgiving, and Acts describes wealthier Christians contributing funds in support of poorer members of the community. We are all called to be good stewards of what we have received from God. This means making room to give some things away. We all have necessary expenses, which will vary in our different states of life. We should all assess our finances and make sure offering to the work of God is a priority in our budget.
