Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon had 7 children, 15 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren—by far the largest number of descendants of any of the pioneer Cattaraugus County Kenyon families. Today, almost 175 years after their marriage, some of their many descendants still live in or near Cattaraugus Co. The 89th annual reunion was held in 2010.

Samuel D. Kenyon was born about 1814 in Onondaga Co, NY. He was the son of Nathan T. and Anna (Hall) Kenyon, who are the subjects of Chapter 11, “Nathan T. and Anna (Hall) Kenyon”. By 1834, Samuel moved with his parents to the town of Humphrey, Cattaraugus Co. About 1837, Samuel married Clarissa Ann Trowbridge, daughter of Dr. James and Olive (Sackett) Trowbridge. Clarissa was born Dec 7, 1817 in the town of Hinsdale, Cattaraugus Co.

Samuel died at the age of about 41 on January 7, 1856 in the town of Humphrey. Clarissa died in Humphrey at age 60 on Nov 11, 1878. She is buried beside her husband in the Five Mile Cemetery, town of Allegany. Son Jeremiah inherited the 64-acre farm and all property.

Samuel and his father Nathan actually spelled their surname “Kinyon”—originally the most common spelling. Samuel and Clarissa’s descendants all switched to Kenyon, following a trend that developed as farmers started to use standardized spelling.

All of the seven children of Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon are assembled for their portrait. The photo was purchased by Donna Kenyon at the annual Kenyon reunion in Cattaraugus Co.

The descendants of Samuel and Clarissa gather for a reunion in 1914. This tradition has continued to the present day. —Collection of Melissa Mosby

Children of Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon All places are in Cattaraugus Co, NY, unless noted.

1. Olive Kenyon: Born Dec 20, 1838 in Humphrey. Died Jan 26, 1903 at age 64, in Canisteo, Steuben Co, NY. By 1860 she married Jedediah/Diah Crosby, son of Samuel and Lucinda Crosby, who was born in Franklinville Sep 26, 1831. He died there at age 37 on Sep 16, 1869, and is buried in the Cadiz Cemetery in Franklinville. On Aug 20, 1874, in Olean, Olive became the third wife of Phillip W. Failing. Phillip was born in Jasper Township, Steuben Co, NY on Aug 4, 1825, the son of Adam and Nancy (Lyon) Failing. Phillip’s first wife was Emily Spencer. The second was Clarissa Hayes. Phillip died in Canisteo Jun 27, 1907. Olive and Phillip are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo. Olive does not appear to have had any children.

2. Anna Kenyon Anna was born in May 1842 in Humphrey, and died at about age 69 on May 25, 1911 in Humphrey. About 1872, she married Charles Ford, the son of Jacob and Abigail Ford. Charles was born Jan 1827 in Lyndon and died in Humphrey at age 82, probably on Aug 21, 1909. Charles was a farmer. After the death of her husband, Anna lived with her sister Harriet Learn in Hinsdale. One day Anna traveled by train to Franklinville to visit her brother Dudley A. Kenyon. While on the train, she became ill. When her brother met her at the station, she collapsed in his arms, dying suddenly of a heart attack. Anna and Charles had an adopted son: a. Eugene Ford: Born about 1873. Last found in 1880.

3. Harriet A. Kenyon Born Sep 1, 1844 in Humphrey. Died at age 77 on Sep 10, 1921 in Hinsdale. Married Oct 22, 1872 Morris Learn, son of Jacob and Catherine Learn. Morris was born Apr 26, 1840 in Ischua, and died at age 80 on May 27, 1920 in Hinsdale. They are buried in Hinsdale Cemetery. Morris and Harriet were farmers in Hinsdale. Prior to his marriage to Harriet, Morris married Rosa/Rosaltha Babcock, who died 3 years later. She was the daughter of Samuel and Lydia Babcock, born about 1840, probably in Otto. Morris fought for the Union in the Civil War, as did his brothers Thomas, John and Jacob. Morris enlisted on May 9, 1864 in Company A of the 188th NY Infantry. He was hit on the left hip while in battle at Hatchers Run in Virginia. He fought in the “Siege of Petersburg” which lasted from June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865. He became ill due to fatigue and exposure, and about Apr 1, 1865 he was sent to the hospital at City Point, VA. He was discharged Jun 1, 1865. In 1891, he received an “invalid pension” (unable to earn a living by manual labor). On his death, Harriet applied for a widow’s pension. She lived

13 Samuel Kenyon Page 7

on borrowed money while the delays and red tape stretched on for over a year. The first payment was not received until 3 months before her death. Harriet and Morris had two children: 3a Blanche Olive Learn Born Mar 26, 1874 in Ischua. Died at age 78 on Aug

15, 1952 at her home in Ischua. Married Sep 11, 1896 to Fred O. Brown, who was born Oct 25, 1871 at Nile, Allegany Co, NY, the son of Frank and Carrie Brown. Fred died at age 85 on Jan 25, 1957 in Ischua. They are buried in Maplehurst Cemetery, Hinsdale. Fred and Blanche lived on the same farm in Ischua for over 50 years. Fred was a farmer and for many years a justice of the peace. Blanche was active in Republican politics in the county, served as president and secretary of the Ischua Home Bureau, and was for many years the Ischua correspondent for the Olean Times Herald. Blanche and Fred had four children: i. Mildred G. Brown was born Dec 26, 1896 in Ischua and died at age 89

on Nov 20, 1986 in the Olean General Hospital (last residence Hinsdale). She married Lynn Burdette Osgood about 1915. Lynn was born Nov 29, 1894, the son of Walter and Emma Osgood of Ischua. Lynn died at age 89 on Feb 3, 1984. They had 5 children. On Jun 18, 1943 in Lancaster PA, Mildred married Henry W. Osgood. Henry, a brother of Lynn Osgood, was born Feb 1, 1901 and died at age 80 on Feb 10, 1981. Because Lynn did not die until 1984, Mildred’s first marriage appears to have ended in divorce. Henry was a veteran of World War II. He was a construction worker and farmer. Mildred and both husbands are buried in Hinsdale Cemetery, in Section 2, lot 87, graves 3-5. Mildred was survived by the following children: Raymon Osgood of Hinsdale, Harold Osgood of Roseburg OR, Mrs. Jessie E. Borden of Whitseville, Mrs. Ione Graham of Hinsdale, and a foster daughter Mrs. Jean Marie Miller of Hinsdale. She was predeceased by two sons: Chester and Ormal.

iii. Laurel Brown was born Aug 15, 1900 in Hinsdale and died at age 55 on Dec 4, 1955, last residence Ischua. On Oct 15, 1920, she married Thurman H. Miller, a farmer, the son of Peter and Rosa Miller of Ischua. Thurman was born Feb 21, 1899, and died at about age 80 in February 1979, last residence Cuba, Allegany Co. NY. Laurel and Thurman are buried in Maplehurst Cemetery in Hinsdale. Laura was a member of the Ischua Grange and Home Bureau, and had been a Republican county committeewoman. 13 Samuel Kenyon Page 8

Raymond was born Mar 24, 1894 in PA and died at age 46 in Hinsdale in 1940 (funeral Apr 25). Pearl and Raymond are buried in Maplehurst Cemetery in Hinsdale. Raymond was a veteran of World War 2 and active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was buried with full military funeral services. Pearl was a widow for 35 years. She graduated from the Bryant and Stratton Business College of Buffalo. For 25 years, she was a sales representative for Mullen and Gunn liquor wholesalers of Buffalo, and for the last 9 years she worked at Allen’s Drive-In Liquor Store in Olean. Pearl and Raymond had two children, Mrs. Audrey Abbott of Zephyr Hills FL, and Mrs. Joan Smith of Bradford PA.

Kinyon Wilber Jr. is a grandson of Freeman Wilber who married Mercy Kenyon, who was in turn Mary’s great-great-great aunt. On Sep 6, 1908, Mary married Myron W. Hicks, son of Abel and Jane Hicks of Lyndon. Myron was born Oct 16, 1836, and died in Lyndon in 1920 at about 83, outliving Mary by two years. He was previously married to Elvira Rickards, who died in Great Valley on May 25, 1907. Myron had a daughter, Sophia, by Elvira. Elvira had children Nelson and Lana Stevens/Stepens by a previous marriage. Mary and Kinyon had three children:

Luce, his wife, and his parents were buried in Ten Broeck Cemetery. This private cemetery was established by the will of Peter Ten Broeck and reserved for the use of his neighbors. Judge Peter Ten Broeck was a very wealthy man who owned 8,000 acres of land in the area. Postscript Readers are urged to contact the writer if they have any questions, additions, or corrections, or if they wish to be informed of any newly discovered information. This chapter is part of a series that documents the Kenyon families who lived in Cattaraugus County, New York, during the mid 19th century, and traces their descendants and Kenyon ancestors.

Researching the descendants of Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon While researching my great grandfather Madison S. Kinyon, I found a number of other Kenyon families who lived in Cattaraugus Co at the same time. No one knew how they were related, or what the line of descent was from the John and James Kenyon who came from England and first appear in Rhode Island in 1687. I decided to find out, and began my research. From time to time I have been contacted by descendants of these families and have shared information.

In 1999, I discovered the Kenyon ancestors of Nathan T. and Anna (Hall) Kenyon, parents of Samuel Kenyon, as related in the Chapter on Nathan T. and Anna Kenyon. I shared this information with Hope Luedeke in 1999, with Carol Dennis (of the Kenyon reunion) in 1999, and with Melissa Mosby in 2007. When I began researching the present chapter in 2010, I found that most of the descendants of Samuel Kenyon were included in family trees posted online. Since I prefer to use documented information, I used the posted lineages as clues to help me find documentation, to correct occasional errors, and find missing information.

The grandchildren of Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon were particularly troublesome to research. First of all, the sheer number of grandchildren and spouses was overwhelming. New York laws greatly impede access to vital records. Indexed newspapers are not available for recent years. The 1940 census had not yet been released. For some of the great grandchildren, there were no obituaries or gravestone inscriptions because they were still living. Thus the great grandchildren are a work in progress.

Sources Note on newspaper articles: For newspaper articles, the name and date of the paper is always given when known. If not known, the item is identified as a “clipping”. These items are from private collections, and older items from historical society files, where the name and date of the paper was sometimes not recorded. Using the date of the event from the clipping, the original article can be obtained from library microfilmed newspaper collections. Sources for Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon: Family of Samuel Kinyon: The family appears in the following census records, all NY, Cattaraugus Co, Town of Humphrey: 1840 p 179, 1850 p 115B, 1855 p 124, 1860 p 318 (Clarissa Kenyon, widow), 1865 p 227, 1870 p 258B, 1875 not found. Birth of Samuel: Age 36 in 1850 census, and 41 in 1855 census.

Samuel’s middle initial: The petition for letters of administration by his widow gives the middle initial D, the same as in the 1840 census. No middle initial is given in 1850, while in 1855 the initial is given as B. Some of his descendants gave the middle name ‘Lot’, but we have not found any documentation to support this. We have elected to go with the initial D. as the source most likely to be correct

because it was used in the administration of his estate. Birth and death of Samuel: Birth date estimated from age 36 in 1850 census, and age 41 in 1855 census. County from 1855 census. Death date from petition for letters of administration of the estate of Samuel D. Kinyon by Clarissa Kinyon, Feb 5, 1856, Cattaraugus Co Surrogate Court, File Box 212. Age at death estimated from birth year. The current online record for Five Mile Cemetery is Kenyon, S. B., spouse Carrissa [sic] died 1856, age 49 yr, but the age disagrees with age 36 in the 1850 census and 41 in 1855. Many years earlier the DAR recorded “Kenyon, S. D., died Jan 22, 1877 [sic] aged 61 years [sic]” (NYS DAR, Cemetery, Church and Town Records, 786:51). Neither of these records appears to be accurate. Marriage: Name from census and petition for letters of administration of Samuel. Marriage year estimated from birth date of first child. Birth of Clarissa: Date and place of birth and parents’ names from Francis Bacon Trowbridge, The Trowbridge Genealogy, New Haven, CT, 1908, family 1049. The maiden name Trowbridge is also given in the marriage record of her daughter Mary to Myron Hicks (FHL film 583817). Age 33 in 1850 census. County of birth from 1855 and 1865 census. Death of Clarissa: Clarissa’s will is Cattaraugus Co Record of Wills 7:261-262. She signed her will May 27, 1878. The last digit of the year is difficult to read but is identical to the second digit in the year 1878. The obituary of Clarissa Kenyon reads:

Died, Monday, 11st, Mrs. Clarissa A Kenyon, aged 60 years. Funeral Wednesday at the Baptist church on the Five Mile. Rev O. F. Shoonover of Allegany preaching the sermon. —Weekly

Argus, Franklinville, Nov 1878. Thus Clarissa died Nov 11, 1878. The obituary survives as a clipping in a notebook at the Ischua Valley Historical Society. The current online record for Five Mile Cemetery is Kenyon, Carissa [sic], spouse S. B. Kenyon, died 1878, age 60 yr [sic]. The much earlier record NYS DAR 786:51 is “Kenyon, Carbisca [sic], wife [of Samuel], died Nov 11, 1878, age 60 yr [sic]”. Clarissa actually died at age 54 if the birth date from the Trowbridge genealogy is correct. Clarissa’s will was proved Mar 22, 1879. No probate case file was found.

Sources for children of Samuel and Clarissa Kenyon Their children are named in the petition for letters of administration of Samuel and they appear in the census with their parents. 1. Olive Kenyon Olive’s birth date from her obituary; same month and year in 1900 census. Agrees with age 12 in 1850 census, 17 in 1855 census. Olive is found with first husband Diah Crosby in the 1860 census for Franklinville, p 606 (indexed by ancestry.com as “Dah Crosby”), and in 1865 p 39. Olive’s sister Harriet Kenyon is also living with them in 1865, as is Samuel Crosby, identified in the census as Diah’s father. Diah’s death date is from his gravestone inscription, as read by Maggie Fredrickson, Curator of the Ischua Valley Historical Society, on Jul 11, 2010, after cleaning the stone. His inscription is on the same stone as his parents Samuel A. and Lucinda Crosby. His birth date is from the age at death on the inscription (37 yr, 11 mo, 21 days). All of the current online versions of this inscription are inaccurate, as is the 1930 document by Gertrude Barber: Cattaraugus Co NY Cemeteries, Cadiz Cemetery (copy at FHL). Olive’s date and place of death is

13 Samuel Kenyon Page 23

from her NY State death certificate. Her obituary is from the Jan 28, 1903 Canisteo News. Olive’s obituary names her siblings, which verifies that she is our subject. The date and place of marriage to Phillip Failing is from Olive’s obituary. The Historical Gazetteer of Steuben Co, NY, 1891, p 565, states “Olive (Kenyon) Crosby who became the third wife of Phillip W. Failing…”. This source gives Phillip’s birth date and biographical detail. Olive is found in the census as husband of Phillip W. Failing in West Union, Canisteo, Steuben Co in 1880 p 639B, 1892 p 8, and 1900 p 14B. The death date for Phillip is from his obituary, Canisteo Times, Jul 4, 1907. Hillside Cemetery records are online at paintedhills.org. 2. Anna Kenyon Marriage, death date, and biographical detail for Anna is from her obituary in the Ellicottville Post May 31, 1911, and a clipping dated May 25, 1911 in the Ischua Valley Historical Society obituary file. Birth date of Anna from the 1900 census. The year agrees with age 8 in the 1850 census. Birth date for Charles is from the 1900 census, and agrees with age 22 in the 1850 census, and age 36 on Jul 1, 1963 from his Civil War Draft registration, online at ancestry.com. According to relatives, Charles died Aug 21, 1909. Aug 1909 agrees with Anna’s obituary, but a documented source for the day has not been found. In the census, Anna and Charles Ford are found in Lyndon in 1880 p 304B, 1892 p 1, and 1900 p 3A (recorded as Carles Ford). Anna had no children per the 1900 census, but an adopted son Eugene, 7, was living with them as of the 1880 census. He was missing by 1892. Charles Ford with his parents Jacob and Abigail is found in Lyndon in 1850 p 406, 1860 p 54, and 1870 p 317. By 1880 Abigail is widowed. No obituary was found for Charles Ford. Anna’s obituary states that she was to be

buried at Five Mile Cemetery, but neither she nor Charles appear in the online lists. 3. Harriet: Harriet’s birth, death and marriage dates from her obituary, Olean Evening Times, Sep 12, 1921. Death date also in their Civil War pension file. Birth agrees with year from the 1905 NYS census and month and year from 1900 census. Morris’s Civil War pension application file is from the National Archives, application 419687, widow 1159293. The account of his Civil War service is from this file. Morris’s birth date is from his notarized statement in the pension file. Death date from his pension file and his obituary, Olean Evening Times, May 27, 1920. Morris appears in the census with his parents Jacob and Catherine in Ischua in 1850 p 132B, and 1860 p 91. Marriage to Rosa/Rosaltha Babcock from Adams, 1893, Historical Gazetteer of Cattaraugus Co, p 714. A letter from his widow Harriet to the Bureau of Pensions dated Jun 8, 1921 states that his first wife died 3 years after their marriage. Morris appears with his first wife Rosaltha in the 1870 census for Ischua, p 273A. Morris’s parents are also present in the household. Rosaltha appears with her parents Samuel and Lydia Babcock in the 1850 census, Cattaraugus Co, Otto, p 320B. The family of Morris and Harriet Learn appears in the census in Hinsdale as follows: 1880 p 242A, 1892 p 12-13, 1900 p 12B, 1910 p 6A, 1920 p 5A. The 1920 census was taken in January so that although Morris died in May, he is included in this census. The Hinsdale Cemetery record is online at paintedhills.org: Harriet 1844-1921, Morris 1840-1920. Gravestone photos are online at findagrave.com. There is a biographical sketch of Morris’s parents and brothers in Adams, Historical Gazetteer of Cattaraugus Co, 1893, p 714.

The family of Blanche and Fred Brown is found in the census in Ischua in 1900 p 7A, 1910 p 6B, 1920 p 1A, and 1930 p 5B. Fred is found with his parents Frank and Carrie Brown in Hinsdale, 1880, p 249C.

i. Mildred Brown Birth and death date from the SSDI, SSN 116-16-7773, with day of death added from her obituary (Clipping from Donna Kenyon). Date of marriage to Lynn estimated from birth date of first child. Lynn Osgood: Birth and death dates from SSDI, SSN 721-18-0440, with day of death added from his cemetery record. Other sources disagree as to his birth date, but the year 1895 in his WW I draft registration is probably wrong, as is the birth month of Dec in the 1900 census. Lynn is found with his parents in the census for Ischua 1900 p 3A and with brother Henry in 1910 p 8A, family of Walter Osgood. The family of Lynn and Mildred Osgood appears in the census in Hinsdale 1920 p 1A, and Ischua 1930 p 4B. 5. Dudley A. Kenyon: Birth and death of Dudley: The best obituary of Dudley is in the Olean Evening Herald, Oct 1, 1924. It contains the birth and death dates and most of the biographical detail that we present. The birth date given by the obituary is consistent with age 5 months in 1850 census enumerated Sep 18, 1850. Dudley in the census: The family of Dudley Kenyon appears in the census as follows:

1875 Franklinville. p. 24, (wife Ella, no children) 1880 Franklinville p. 196A (wife Ella, no children). 1892 Franklinville p. 15 (wife Elizabeth, children Katie and Frank). 1900 Humphrey p. 7A (indexed as “Henyan” by ancestry.com), wife Catherine, no children). 1905 Franklinville, p 16 (wife Catherine, no children). 1910 Franklinville, p. 9B (wife Katherine). 1920 Franklinville p. 19A (wife Katherine).

Dudley’s wife Ella: Name from Dudley’s obituary and the 1875 and 1870 census. Dudley’s obituary gives the marriage date as 1869, but Dudley was still living with his parents in 1879. Adams, 1893, Historical Gazetteer of Cattaraugus Co, p. 651-652, states in connection with Jedediah Crosby Jr. that “one of his daughters married Dudley Kenyon.” Jedediah Crosby Jr. appears in Franklinville in the 1855 census, dwelling 83, with his daughter “Elly” age 4, and in the 1860 census, p 606, with daughter Ella, age 9. This is consistent with the age given in the 1875 and 1880 census when married to Dudley. Ella’s birth year is from her age in the census with parents. Dudley’s wife Lizzie: Elizabeth appears as Dudley’s wife only in the 1892 census. A card file in the Cattaraugus County Historical Museum states “Mr. Dudley Kenyon married Miss Lizzie Reid in 1884.” Elizabeth is found in the census with her parents Nathan and Julia Reed in Franklinville 1860 p 606 (name Eliza, age 4), 1870 p 183 (name Elisa, age 14), and boarding with Adam Warden in Porterville p 60B (name Lizzie, age 23). A card file at the Cattaraugus Co Historical Museum states that she was born in 1856 in Franklinville, died Jul 22, 1896, and had 2 adopted children: “Mrs. Frank Torrey and Frank Kenyon”. The source is cited as

13 Samuel Kenyon Page 29

“The Chronicle of Franklinville”. The birth date is consistent with the age given in the census 1860 through 1880. The death date is consistent with the fact that Dudley remarried by 1897. Dudley’s wife Catherine: The date of marriage is from Dudley’s obituary. Catherine appears as Dudley’s wife in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses. The obituary of Dudley lists her children (surname Torrey) by a previous marriage. A lineage on rootsweb.com by Garland DeCourcy gives an unsourced list of her children by Augustus Torrey. This list is identical to the list in Dudley’s obituary, except for a fifth child Orren who died young. Catherine was born Jul 7, 1844 per DeCoursey, Jul 1847 per the 1900 census, and 1845 per her gravestone. The online Cemetery listing for Evergreen Cemetery includes Augustus and Catherine, identified as spouses, plus the fifth child who died young. Catherine and Augustus, with children Frank and Grace, appear in the 1892 NY State census in the town of Charlotte, Chautauqua Co, NY, p 6. Catherine was born in Canada per the census, and in Montreal per DeCoursy. Graves of Dudley and Lizzie: Dudley is buried in Mt. Prospect Cemetery according to his obituary. A pair of gravestones for an O. A. Kenyon and wife Lizzie were photographed by Kay Russell at this cemetery. Census records show clearly that there was no such person in Cattaraugus Co as an O. A. Kenyon whose wife’s name was Lizzie. There was an O. A. Kenyon, but his wife’s name was Mary and they have their own gravestone at Mt. Prospect. It appears that the graves are that of D. A. (not O. A.) Kenyon and wife Lizzie. These stones are not listed in the Ischua Valley Historical Society’s Mt. Prospect book. The inscriptions are difficult to read, but as read from digitally enhanced photos they appear to be:

O. A. Kenyon 1845-1924 Lizzie wife of O. A. Kenyon May 12, 1839 - July 22, 1896

The characters that are underlined are almost illegible, and we are not certain. The images of these years, from the photo, are reproduced below:

Birth year Death year

Other problems are that D. A. Kenyon was born in 1850, not 1845, and Lizzie was born in 1856, not 1839. On the other hand, the death dates of D. A. and Elizabeth agree with the sources cited above. Children of Dudley: Dudley’s obituary lists the following children: • Frank Kenyon of illegible, a foster son • Kate Torrey of Edmunds WA, a foster

daughter • William T. Torrey of Johnstown, a

stepson • Albert J. Torrey of Johnstown, a stepson • Frank Torrey of Edmunds Washington, a

stepson • Grace James of Jamestown, a

stepdaughter The stepchildren are clearly children of third wife Catherine by her first husband. The foster children appear with Dudley in the census only in 1892 when Dudley was married to Elizabeth, so it is assumed that they were adopted during this marriage.

5a. Kate/Catherine Torrey The 1924 obituary of Dudley Kenyon states that a foster daughter Kate Torrey lived in Edmunds, WA. A Catherine K. Torrey, age 45, is found on p 9A of the 1920 census for Richmond precinct (south of Edmonds), Snohomish Co, WA, married to a Frank H. Torrey, with a son Kenyon Torrey. Her age corresponds to the Catherine Torrey who was adopted by Dudley, and the name ‘Kenyon’ for her son supports the assumption that Dudley’s adopted daughter Catherine

13 Samuel Kenyon Page 30

married a Frank Torrey. Moreover, Frank Torrey is the name one of the sons of Dudley’s third wife Catherine by her first marriage. The dates qualified by “perhaps” are from an undocumented tree posted on Ancestry. These dates could be used as a point of departure for future research. 5b. 7a. Ethel Kenyon: An index card at Cattaraugus Co Historical Museum gives Ethel’s birth and death dates, quoted from her obituary in the Chronicle of Franklinville. Curiously, it gives her name as Ethel Kenyon but states that she was survived by her husband (not named). However, he is identified by the inscription on Ethel’s gravestone at Mt. Prospect Cemetert which reads “Ethel L. wife of Frank A. Stoddard 1878 -1906” (photographed by Kay Russell). On the same stone is the inscription for her younger brother Jay, who died four months previously. Marriage: Olean Evening Times, Feb 18, 1924. Burial: Record for Allegany Cemetery online at paintedhills.org: Raymond d 1953, Grace d 1955. Raymond in census with parents in Allegany, Cattaraugus Co 1892 p 11, 1900 p 5A. Family of Grace and Raymond in 1930, Allegany p 5A. iii. Manly Wilber: Funeral: Olean Evening Times, Nov 14, 1923 (does not give birth or death dates). Five Mile Cemetery record online at paintedhills.org: Manly Wilber, 1901-1923. Age 3 in 1905 census, Humphrey, p 3.

iv. Raymond Wilber: Most information from Ray’s obituary (clipping from Olean Times Herald via Donna Kenyon). Ray’s dates also in the SSDI, SSN 111-01-8277. Marriage date and wife’s death date from Ray’s obituary. Blanche with parents in census, 1910, Humphrey, p 7A, family of Nathan Williams. Marriage date from Olean Times Herald Sep 10, 1929. Children named in Polk’s Olean Directory, 1938. Places lived from city directories. vi. Ruth Wilber: Ruth was born Oct 1917 based on age 2 yr 2 mo as of the 1920 census (census date Jan 1). Her death date is from the NY State Death Index, and her obituary in the Syracuse Herald-Journal, Mar 27, 1954. She was buried in Allegany Cemetery according to her obituary, but she was not found in the paintedhills.org listing for this cemetery. She married Donald Howe of Bradford from the announcement of their marriage in the Olean Times Herald, Sep 12, 1936. We found that there was a Donald Howe, age 15, b MI, living in Bradford PA as of the 1930 census, with father Everett (age 41, b NY), who was married to Madeline (age 25, b PA). In 1920 a Donald Howe, age 4 yr 9 mo old as of Jan 1, b in MI, was found in the census for South Haven, Van Buren, MI, living with father Everett (age 32, b NY). This appears to be the

13 Samuel Kenyon Page 33

same Donald and Everett Howe found in 1930, but Everett is now married to Hattie (32, b PA). The SSDI lists a Donald Howe, SSN 095-03-9970, b Mar 9, 1915, d Jul 1984 age 69 in Jordan, Onondaga Co, NY. The year of birth is consistent with the Donald Howe who married Ruth Wilber, although the month doesn’t agree with the 1920 census. This is all we know from documented sources. Ruth and Donald appear in a number of undocumented lineages posted online. One is “Johnson and Howe Genealogies3” on rootsweb.com. It doesn’t cite sources, but was prepared by professional genealogist Grace K. White. It is consistent with our information above, and adds that Donald was married twice: first Sep 6, 1935 to Ruth Wilber (b Aug 8, 1917), and second on Feb 20, 1953 to Marion G. Quill (b Sep 10, 1921). It doesn’t give Ruth’s death date. The month of birth of Aug for Ruth disagrees with age 2 yr, 2 mo as of Jan 1 1920 census. It makes it clear that the Madeline Howe of the 1930 census (mentioned above) was Donald’s stepmother. There is a lot of information on Donald’s ancestors.

7c. Ernest Kenyon: There are multiple sources for the dates: 1) Obituary clipping for Ernest at Ischua Valley Historical Society. 2) Obituary of Mary, Olean Times Herald, Mar 8, 1978. 3) Marriage from Marriage records of Cattaraugus County, New York, 1908-1935 FHL film 583817. 4) WW I draft registration for Ernest online at ancestry.com. 5) SSDI: Ernest Kenyon SSN 076-32-8688; Mary Kenyon SSN 104-22-2935. 6) Gravestone photo at Mt. Prospect Cemetery from Kay Russell. The accepted year for the birth of Ernest is clearly 1883, but this may

not be exact. His WW I draft registration gives his birth date as May 12. 1882, and the same year is obtained from the 1892 census (age 9 as of the enumeration date of Feb 16, 1892). This is the first census in which he appears. Mary with parents in 1900 census, NY, Cattaraugus Co, Olean, p 28B, family of Elmer Swartz.
