Waimea Village, one year on

Richmond dentist comes to the rescue

Andrew Board

It was a chilly Sunday afternoon in September last year when then-Tasman mayoral candidate Kit Maling stood at the front of a packed Blue Herring Lounge, deep in Waimea Village. He wore a tweed coat and shuffled from foot to foot as hundreds of stressed and concerned fac-es, invariably topped with grey

hair, squeezed past each other and on to chairs that had been set out ready for a big turnout. Battle-hardened by a dozen pre-vious meetings, the residents had hoped for good news but they didn’t expect it.They sat there after a three year fight with the owners of Waimea Village, Michael and Carolyn Wright, over the massive in-creases to the monthly levy they

paid. They were at the end of their collective wits. It had been emotional and had taken a huge toll on many of them.Kit stood there, after months of work by community leaders and businesses to support the resi-dents, and offered a way out. He would buy the village and turn it over to the residents, with each

able to buy a share, equal to the number of homes in the village. It was a day of hope. Two months later when it was officially in their hands, it was a day of celebration. One year on, the atmosphere of stress and strain has gone. Now it’s a sense of pride in their village and the neighbourly vibe has re-turned.The village has got its mojo back.Already, money has been paid off the modest mortgage, two roads have been re-paved, the

back fence that was falling over has been strengthened, the light posts have been de-rusted and re-concreted and a new security system has been installed. Two more roads are planned to be re-surfaced by April next year.Kit, who is now the part-time manager of the village, says it just goes to show how the past own-ers “screwed them over” with the incredibly-high monthly levy payments they imposed on the residents. Now the village is managed by a board of directors, two of whom

are residents, the others are busi-ness leaders. Kit contracts to the company and works 20 hours a week to maintain the village and keep it running smooth. He says the community feel is impossible to escape. “If I’m digging a hole somewhere I’ll have four or five guys there watching me dig and offering their opinions, and there’s a competition to see who

can make me the best scones. “They have a real sense of pride in the village now.”Residents will also help garden the common areas and keep an eye on each

other, says Kit.And it is reflecting in the house prices.Recently a home in the village

sold for $280,000, a record high price for a home there, and Kit says de-mand is high be-cause the future is bright.Co-chair of the residents commit-tee, Jerry Row-

land, agrees. He says it’s a com-pletely different atmosphere from a year ago. “I don’t want to talk about the past because what we have now is so great. We all work well together and the village is a great place to be. It’s back to being a friendly, happy place that cares for the people living here.”

The village’s Blue Herring Lounge – previously the scene of heated meetings with the past owners – is now a buzzing hive of activ-ity. There are pool nights, fashion shows, performances and its an-nual garage sale that was held on Saturday.Of the 172 homes in the village 140 are shareholders, and Kit says there is one share attached to each home so there will never be an opportunity for one person to be in control again.Jerry says it’s been a peaceful year. “We’re all so happy. Kit is doing an amazing job and the residents are right behind him and the di-rectors. We can see the improve-ments in the village and it makes us proud. “Waimea Village is back to being the best place in the world to live.”

Last week the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board CEO, Chris Fleming, said that giving children sugary drinks should be classed as neglect. What are your thoughts?

Don Phillips, Richmond

“I don’t think it should be classed as neglect, I think it’s up to the individual to make that call. Lots of fads come and go but as long as you have a balanced diet, it is not wrong.”

Wilhelmina Draijer, Richmond

“Parents like to please their children, but they are not do-ing this because they are giv-ing their children poison. Sugar drinks are for special occasions only.”

James Brewer, Brightwater

“The word neglect seems a bit harsh and too strong, every-thing in moderation is okay.”

Shontelle Edwards, Richmond

“No, it shouldn’t be classed as neglect but parents should be aware of what sugar drinks do. Parents need to read what is on food labels, as some par-ents are giving their children too much sugar.”

It just goes to show how the past owners screwed them over...

- Kit Maling.

For Richmond dog-walkers Deb and Mike Pioch there’s only one thing better than tak-ing pound dogs out for some fresh air – finding them a new home.Deb walked dogs voluntar-ily in Australia before moving to Nelson and enquired at the Tasman District Council dog pound about doing the same here. She and her husband Mike, who both work part-time, have volunteered numerous hours over the past year, walk-ing and training the dogs from the pound and helping to find them new homes. Not only do they walk the dogs twice a week, they also teach them ba-sic commands and help to find them new homes.“We enjoy walking the dogs, getting out in the fresh air and exercising, it is a place you can go and always be welcomed,” says DebSome of the dogs that arrive at the pound can be scared of their new environment and it often takes Deb and Mike quite a few visits to build a trusting relationship. “These dogs often have more personality because they have had to look after

themselves. They then learn to sit, stay and walk on leads. It is really rewarding seeing dogs that wouldn’t even come out of their kennel now in good homes,” says Mike.Mike and Deb spend their days off socialising the dogs as much as possible and, when ready, Deb then videos the dogs on the walks and posts on You Tube, in the hope of find-ing them a new family.“We teach the dogs some social skills and find out what they are like and advertise them to be re-homed on Trade Me and You Tube. We show the dogs, walking and running around on the videos, this lets possible owners see the dogs in action,”

says Deb.In addition to the walking the dogs, the couple take the dogs in their own vehicle to the Vet Centre Richmond to be de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped, and take them into their own home to care for them as they recover. Control Services Ltd animal control officer, John Bergman, says Mike and Deb do a won-derful job. “Due to their dedi-cation, the dogs in the pound have a better quality of life and a trained puppy has more of a chance of finding a new home”.For further information, visit Deb and Mike’s website www.tasmanrichmonddogpound.co.nz

Hospitality New Zealand’s Nel-son branch is “extremely disap-pointed” that its appeal against the Tasman district’s 2am closing time for bars and restaurants has

been rejected and is reviewing the decision before planning its next step. The association was the sole ap-pellant at the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority hear-ing in the Nelson District Court

which last week released its de-cision. Tasman’s 2am closure came into effect with its policy in December last year and Nelson branch president, Ron Taylor, says the court’s decision to reject the appeal is unfair and a blow to

the industry. “The appeal has been lost so we are extremely disappointed,” Ron says. “We put up a great case - we spent a year-and-a-half on it and a lot of time discussing it with council so we are not sure what will do next but we are getting our lawyers to look at the decision.”

Ron says the ruling will poten-tially result in loss of jobs in some of the Tasman district’s “60-plus” bars and could cause a mass exo-dus of patrons into Nelson. He also says closing bars one hour earlier will have no impact on the incidence of alcohol-related harm recorded in the Nelson-Tasman region and will unfairly penalise the majority of respon-sible drinkers. Richmond hotel owner, Tony Crosbie, says one of their members, Leigh Knowles of the Hampden Hotel in Mur-chison, has said the 2am closing is a disaster for their community. Tony says Leigh is concerned

about young patrons leaving Murchison early in the evening because of the early closing and driving to Nelson. “That’s exactly what we don’t want - young peo-ple going to bars and then getting in their cars and driving,” he says. Tony, who is an executive mem-ber of HNZ and employs 40 staff in his bars in the Tasman district, also says that if patrons are forced to leave early they will move to house or street parties where the risk of alcohol-related harm is significantly higher. He says staff in licensed premises are trained to help minimise harm and pro-vide safe environments for pa-

ECONOMY STRONG: The Nelson-Tasman economy has shown solid growth over the past year with unemployment falling to 4 per cent, the lowest since June 2009, the latest Nelson Region Economic Development figures show. Tourism international guest nights are up 6.2 per cent in the year to May compared to a year earlier and 503 new residential building permits were issued in the year to May 2014, the highest they have been since August 2011. However, these improvements haven’t flowed through to consumer confidence, with an 18 per cent drop over the last three months in the proportion of households with a positive out-look for the coming year.

PLAYCENTRE OPEN DAY: Wakefield Playcentre is holding an open day this Satur-day from 9am to 1pm. There will be face paint-ing, a sausage sizzle and farm animals and pets for children to play with and feed. The playcen-tre is located at 16 Treeton Place, behind the Wakefield School.

CANNABIS FOUND GROWING IN HOME: Murchison Police discovered a sophisticated indoor cannabis growing operation while con-ducting routine inquiries in St Arnaud on Sat-urday afternoon. After seeing cannabis plants growing inside the house, police searched the property and re-covered more than 450 cannabis plants in vari-ous stages of maturity.Detective John Nicholls said the property ap-peared to be well set up with plants growing in several rooms which were fitted with timers, lighting and ventilation systems. The occupier of the property was not home at the time but presented himself to Police the following Monday. A 38 year old St Arnaud man has been charged with offences relating to the find.

A team of volunteers from the Nelson Coast-guard has been assembled to restore a donat-ed yacht. The yacht is a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor, that was donated to the Coastguard by the Waimea Weekly newspaper and its sister pa-per, Nelson Weekly. The volunteers from the Coastguard will spend the next year tidying it up, before raf-fling it off. They hope to raise as much as $20,000 from the project. Graeme Richards from the Coastguard, says

the donation “blew them away” but they are now in the planning phase, figuring out what they need for the yacht.“First thing we’re doing is getting it cleaned up, inside and out. The inside of the hull is pretty dirty, it’s had a lot of rain water in it so it’s got tide marks inside.”The wiring will also need to be pulled out and then rewired from scratch, but the project isn’t huge, says Graeme. And with the mast and rigging expected to be up this time next month, it won’t be long before the yacht begins to look the part.

Waimea College principal, Larry Ching, revealed one of his deepest, darkest secrets to students and staff during an emotional and humorous fare-well speech at the school’s sen-ior prizegiving last week.Larry is leaving Waimea Col-lege after 12 years as principal and 44 years in schools around the country and last Wednes-day he told senior students that “sometimes you can do something incredibly stupid and still come out of it looking good”. He explained that he had learned that lesson in life about 40 years ago when he al-most burned down Westland High School but still came out of it looking like a hero.“I was about to leave the school one night when I no-ticed a flickering light coming from a classroom. I went back and had a look and it was on fire so I phoned the principal which was really silly. “He asked if I had phoned the fire brigade or tried to put it out and I said no. So I hung up and got a fire extinguisher off

the wall and put the fire out.“When the fire brigade arrived they said it looked like the fire had been started by someone putting a cigarette out in the wastepaper basket. I smoked back in those days and it was my cigarette but I have never told anyone that until today.“I was hailed as a hero for sav-ing the school from burning down, but I had started the fire so you can be incredibly stu-pid and come out of it looking good.”Larry received a standing ova-tion at the prizegiving. Stu-dents also performed a haka in his honour.Waimea’s top academic stu-dents were also honoured at the prizegiving, with Florence Wilson being named Dux and Anton Jelinek named as Proxi-me Accessit. Florence, 17, had earlier won the classical studies, history and English with Shakespeare prizes while Anton won the

chemistry, physics and geog-raphy prizes.Florence, who plans to study law and commerce at Otago University next year, says she could not have enjoyed academic success without the support of her parents, Wendy and Thomas, and the teachers at Waimea College. She says the highlights of the school year included perform-ing in the Stage Challenge, house sports day and “seeing my friends every day”.Anton, 18, who is aiming to study engineering at Univer-sity of Canterbury next year, says his highlight was per-forming in the school produc-tion, Westside Story.“It was amazing see so many people coming together to produce such a professional show,” he says.Joe Robinson won the K An-derson Cup for general excel-lence for boys, Elora Chang won the Jane Hunt Cup for general excellence for girls and Melanie Westley won the Prin-cipal’s Award for Academic Excellence.

The V4 and Rotary South Island Champi-onships were held over the weekend, with a day of drag racing on Saturday and a “show and shine” event at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. One of the biggest automotive and lifestyle shows of its kind in Australasia, the V4 Rotary was automotive heaven for those who went along.Devin Stokes, of Nelson, showed his Mark II Ford Escort at the event and says it was great to be able to have his car on show. He and his brother, Darryl Bunn, fully re-

stored the car, which includes a turbo sky-line motor, slowly over a two year period. The influx of car lovers to the region didn’t have much of an impact on the number of tickets issued by police, either. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says specialist road policing staff from Canterbury and Marlborough helped with a sting on vehicles travelling into the area for the event. “I’m very pleased to be in a position to say that, on the whole, the vis-iting car enthusiasts and locals exercised good judgement on our roads.”

With a successful gala done and dusted, Wake-field School is looking forward to its new food tech class. The gala has been a popular community event for years, with families coming along to enjoy the activities and treat themselves to a delicious picnic dinner. This year, the gala was once again well received and organisers are thrilled with the event. “It was a great success, Wakefield’s a great community and they get in behind things so we had a fabulous evening,” says Wakefield School Principal, Peter Verstappen. The total money brought in by the twilight gala is still waiting to be finalised but it is expected to be around the $25,000 mark, and a much ap-preciated result for their exciting new venture. “We’ve got a great project this year; we want to

build a food technology kitchen for our stu-dents. We’re a school of around 300 and at the moment the only cooking facilities the kids have are in the hall, but that’s a very small and inad-equate facility.”The refurbishment of one classroom block has almost started and part of that project will in-clude the food technology space. The total cost of the project is expected to be around $200,000.“It’s really important for kids to learn how to cook, but it’s also in line with where we’re going with our curriculum here at Wakefield School. We’re really pushing out to a curriculum that of-fers a much wider range of learning experiences. Through cooking you can learn how to read and write, how to do maths and it’s a really engaging activity,” says Peter. With the kitchen expected to be finished next year.

College students off to national singing school

Waimea College singers, from left, James Corcraighe, Jillian Maisey and Louise Davis, rehearsing for the New Zealand Singing School. Pho-to: Simon Bloomberg.

Waimea College’s Louise Davis, James Corcraighe and Jillian Mai-sey have been given the opportu-nity of a lifetime but now they have to raise the funds to help pay for it.The trio have been invited to attend the prestigious New Zealand Sing-ing School in Napier from January 7-17. They will receive tuition from a number of international perform-ers, including top London-based tenor Keith Lewis, and Louise says she can’t wait. “It will be such a cool opportunity to expand my knowl-edge and be taught by the best,” she

says.Louise says they were accepted for the school after sending in an ap-plication that included a DVD of them singing and their CV. They also had to send a deposit for the school that costs $1500 in addition to their accommodation and travel.Louise says they had a concert at Waimea College on Tuesday and are keen to sing at functions to help raise funds. Anyone interested in booking a performance by the trio can email their teacher, Erica Sim, at [email protected]

Spectacular gardens around Richmond and Hope won’t be the only attraction in the Church on the Hill’s garden trail this Saturday.Church on the Hill in Richmond has organ-ised a selection of nine gardens for its third, biannual garden trail which is being held to raise funds to build the church’s new commu-nity centre. Although the gardens will be the main attraction on Saturday, organisers are also holding a wedding-themed display fea-turing 14 wedding gowns worn by brides from around the district from 1947 to 1999. “We have three gowns that were worn by la-dies who now in their 90s,” one of the organis-ers Lorraine Leonards says. “They are all very, very special and I’m sure a lot of people will be interested in seeing them.”Lorraine says the garden trail has been well supported by home owners who will be open-ing their gardens to the public for the day. She says the organising committee inspected the gardens last November to make sure they were suitable and they were very impressed by their standard.“We selected a range of gardens so that there’s something for everyone. There are some really big ones and some smaller, suburban ones and they all look wonderful - we are very fortunate to have so many people open up their gardens for us.” Lorraine says organising this year’s garden trail has been an emotional journey for the committee after one of their members, Caro-line Pitman, recently passed away.“Caroline started the whole thing so we want to make this year’s trail a real tribute to her,” Lorraine says. The garden trail will be held on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the Richmond Mall customer service centre or at Church on the Hill on Saturday from 9am. The wedding display will be open at the church hall from 10am with a donation for entry. It will also include baking, plant and craft stalls and raffles.

WAIMEA VILLAGE GA-RAGE SALE: Ethel Mur-doch, Pam Butler and Fay Ross manning the stalls at the annual Waimea Village garage sale on Saturday morning. The “bring it Friday, sell it Saturday” sale was once again a huge suc-cess, raising $2553.30 for the Waimea Village Residents’ Committee.Committee co-chair, Jerry Rowland, says it was a “fan-tastic day” and that they ap-preciated the support from the community. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Page 12: 12 November 2014

Blacksticks coming to town:Awesome! Great to see our fan-tastic facility getting used for

internationals. Looking forward to it. Rachel McMurtry.

Good for the city and it should generate some much needed re-

tail spending. Brenda Kenny.

Giving sugary drinks to kids neglect?Agree. Funny thing, water out of the tap is free. Dave Trigg.

I’ve seen photos on Facebook of children as young as 3 drinking

out of a large can of V. That’s neglect. Who in their right mind would give an energy drink to their child..... Babies getting fizzy in their bottles is definitely neglect. Katrina Topp.

Giving it out at a kids birthday party as a treat is not neglect,

but letting kids drink it every day and thinking its ok, is neglect. Tina Duncan.

I disagree, everything in propor-tion. My son drinks juice and it

has sugar, but he refuses water, so I’m supposed to let him get dehydration instead of giving him a drink of juice? A whole can of fizz or energy drinks should be a no, but classed as neglect is taking it too far. Aleisha Brunell.

In the past six months my daugh-ter and I have witnessed mothers

giving their very young children coke on three separate occasions. It’s mind-

blowing! Sheree Piesse.

Monkey see, monkey do! I al-ways have bottles and bottles of

cold water in the fridge, and it’s a run-ning joke when my kids drink “my” wa-ter, they drink so much water, like me! Not neglect when it’s once every now and then. Amiee Baker.

I agree. Back when I was bring-ing up my daughter we didn’t

think or realise the damage soft drinks did and consequently my daughter has a mouth full of fillings. My grandies on the other hand have none as my daughter took care not to give them soft drinks. Brenda Kenny.

On a regular basis, definitely ne-glect. One small glass at a birth-

day party is fine in my opinion. Some juices have more sugar than lemonade, so why it’s seen as a “healthy option” is completely beyond me. Nikole Berkett.

Neglect is taking it a bit far, as to say they don’t care or love their

child[ren]. I would put it down to just poor parenting choices. Helayna Brennan.

Everything in moderation. I am all for sugar-saturated drinks as

a treat, but am totally opposed in an everyday environment. Education, as opposed to nanny state compulsion, is a better direction. Peter Snushall.

It is not neglect! Everything in moderation. So I can go to an

event and buy alcohol - which is a drug - but not buy an L&P ! Makes no sense to me. Alethea Stove.

I agree, if it’s given to them on a regular basis. Xmas and birthday

parties is understandable, but if your child can come home from school and have a glass of coke or Fanta then there’s something wrong there. Kids should be having water or milk. I don’t think ne-glect is the right word to use, though. But, unfortunately, you do see kids go-ing to school with fizzy, and well, that’s a cock-up in the parenting department. Khalarn Olivia Cooper.

I agree. Water is better, AND it’s free! My girls will only be having

that 3L Just Juice for their birthdays as a treat. I’m hosting Christmas this year, and I will not be supplying fizzy drinks. Jannelle Patterson.

I chose not to give my kids juice or fizzy for quite a few years, I

believe my eldest was about 7 when she first tried fizzy and she only has it as a treat. They come to me and ask for a drink and I turn them to the water tap!! Juice, I give them as a treat but watered down. I’ve seen parents put coke and juice in baby bottles and put their kids to bed, pathetic but only because they are not educated enough I believe. Sa-rah Bailey.

Property insightsTips for buying your first home Buying your first home is not only very exciting but it can also be quite daunting. Here are a few tips to help first time buyers through the process:Have a clear idea of what sort of home you want - choose the area where you want to live, location of schools and amenities, make a list of essential features, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, size of section etc. There will be some features that will be non-negotiable but be willing to compromise.Do the research - look at as many houses as you can, get a feel for the affordability of your chosen area and build up a database of house prices. Use the internet and real estate website alerts for new properties coming to the market in your price range. Finances - find out how much money you are able to borrow with a pre-approved indication of finance. It is a good idea to also have an idea of how much a loan will cost you if the interest rates were to rise. Remember to factor in other expenses, such as your solicitor, the cost of a builder’s report, house insurance, rates - all these things add up.Happy House Hunting!

Lily Trench was just three years old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Now sev-en, the Richmond school girl is one of 25,000 kiwis with the condition.Lily’s mother, Louise Trench, says having a child with dia-betes can be very challenging with constant “24-7” monitor-ing of blood sugar levels.“There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes just to get your child ready for the day, you need to weigh all of their food for every meal and work out how many car-bohydrates there are in their food because for every car-bohydrate you’ve got to have insulin. Playing sports and birthday parties mean extra monitoring and care while still allowing them their freedom.”But it isn’t just the physical is-sues, Louise says it also affects children emotionally. “I have to think, is my child crying because her blood sugar levels are low or is there something else wrong? It is especially hard with growing children as their levels of insulin con-stantly need adjusting, every one centimetre they grow, they need another unit of insulin,” says Louise. Lily has an insulin pump at-

tached to her body which de-livers insulin through a small tube and cannula placed under her skin. The site of the pump needs to be changed every three days.Ruben Mills, also of Rich-mond, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just two. He is now 12 years old and says that the worst thing about having diabetes is “having a pump and Mum hassling me about my blood sugar levels”. “Diabetes doesn’t stop me do-ing anything, but it slows me down sometimes”.Over 225,000 New Zealand-ers are living with diabetes and of all the people diagnosed,

it is estimated that around 10 per cent have type 1 diabetes. World Diabetes Day will be held this Friday to raise funds and awareness.Type 1 diabetes, an auto-immune condition, most of-ten occurs in children aged between seven and 12 years, however it can occur at any age. In conjunction with World Di-abetes Day, a ‘Go Blue for Dia-betes’ mufti day to raise funds for Diabetes New Zealand Nel-son Youth, will be held on Fri-day November 14. Head of the region’s airport, Kaye McNabb, has announced her re-tirement from the job, ending 11 years in charge.Kaye grew up on a dairy farm in Hokitika, and after leaving school decided to study nursing. Mar-riage and family ensued and she then found herself as a solo mum with three children, including one who had serious health problems, and facing redundancy in her role at the hospital. Desperate for work, she applied for a job as a wages clerk at the Westland Hospitals Group where she was promoted to management level. In early 1989, she moved to Nelson and was employed by Port Nelson Ltd in various senior roles, and was appointed to the position of chief executive of Nelson Airport in 2003. “It was a very gutsy decision of the board who appointed me to the position, particularly since I had no aviation experience and didn’t wear trousers. I hope over the years I have justified that deci-sion,” says Kaye.Kaye recognises that it was a chal-lenge, not only for her but for a lot of the people she dealt with within the very male-dominated industry. She overcame this by quickly learn-ing the ins and outs of the aviation scene and its politics, as well as en-suring she was available to listen to issues and opportunities from

the aviators themselves. “I realised pretty quickly that this was the big-gest domestic airport, and really the only one of the regions with the resources to take the lead on politi-cal issues,” says Kaye. The biggest challenge to the airport itself was that it was almost solely dependent on landing charges. A key focus was getting fairer return on the other aspects of the airport, by developing the property and parking to help smooth out the in-come streams. Kaye, who was pre-sented with the Fulton Hogan Air-port Personality of the Year award at the New Zealand Airports con-ference in Auckland last week, has enjoyed her role with the airport company. She says it has been the most exciting and varied job that she could imagine anyone having. A recent highlight was the Nelson Airport 75 year anniversary cel-ebration, a free event for the whole community. “You deal with every-thing from plane crashes to being escort for a group of Iwi and Doc removing a dead dolphin from the foreshore, to scooping exhausted Godwits off the grass runway or meeting and escorting royalty.”However, Kaye says it is the nice everyday people that she will re-member the most.Kaye plans to retire on December 19 and will stay in Nelson, where most of her family now reside.

Acupuncturists around the Tasman district are promoting World Acupuncture Aware-ness Week, which starts on Monday.Richmond’s Paddy McBride and Qiu-Hu Liang are two of the 11 registered acupunc-turists in the region and they say that their profession is become accepted as a main-stream form of medicine in this country. And that means Qiu-Hu, who was trained and lectured acupuncture in China before coming to Nelson 20 years ago, has come a

full circle. “In China, acupuncture is older and more accepted that modern medicine,” Qiu-Hu says. “When I first came to New Zealand it was still regarded as alternative but now that has changed and it’s integrated into the mainstream.”Paddy says they can treat a wide range of conditions although most of their patients come to them after suffering soft tissue sports injuries. She says acupuncture treat-ment is covered by ACC and they get a lot

of referrals from GPs. “A 2006 survey of New Zealand GPs showed that the vast ma-jority of them considered acupuncture to be mainstream so we get a lot of referrals from doctors,” she says.Paddy will be speaking to an international audience of the subject of acupuncture’s integration into the mainstream in New Zealand next month after being invited to speak at the International Forum of Korean Medicine in Seoul.

A trailer belonging to the Nelson Mountain Bike Club has had its tyres stolen and left on blocks, but a Nelson business has come to the rescue. When Paul Jennings, a member of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, went to pick up the club’s trailer for an upcoming race, he found the wheels were missing. He called around to see if anyone from the club had borrowed them, but soon realised they’d been stolen. The trailer was kept in a locked Nelson City Council depot located at the start of the Codg-ers mountain bike trail. The lockup was consid-ered to be safe and the club had never encoun-tered any trouble in the past. The Top of the South Downhill Double Header race held last week, involving 100 athletes, re-quired a trailer to transport the bikes up the hill, and without a trailer, there would be no race. With only two days before the race, the club posted a notice on Facebook asking if anyone could loan them some trailer wheels for this event. A mountain biker saw the notice and sent a photo to Tyres & More Nelson owner Adrian Curtis, asking if he could help out.He responded by gifting four new wheels, tyres and locking wheel bolts to the retail value of around $1200, he also fitted the wheels to the trailer. “I used to be a mountain biker and raced a little bit over the years, and I still have an affinity with mountain biking,” he says.

Ecofest is a diverse combination of the best aspects of the Home and Garden Show, with a green

Prometheus Finance offers Kiwis an alternative way to save and bor-row money that is both sustainable and ethical. They are a fully-reg-ulated finance company, focused on socially-responsible finance. Savers' deposits help them provide loans to the many Kiwi initiatives across the country that need capi-tal to grow. Schools, community projects, organic and biodynamic projects, eco housing – the range of what they finance is wide, but every single borrower has the same fundamental purpose: to do something extra for peo-ple and planet. They actively use money to do good. “100% of our borrowers are people and organisations working on socially, environmentally, and culturally positive projects in New Zealand.” says Phil McKinstry, CEO of Prometheus. “We are also transparent and share our borrowers' stories, so our savers can see how their money is used and the peo-ple and communities it is impacting.” Phil will hold a talk as part of the Ecofest titled “Investing in a better (and eco) world,” from 3:10pm at the Jaycee workspace. You can also learn more about Prometheus at their Ecofest stall at the Energy Centre space.

Whether for wind protection, erosion control, water qual-ity, dune restoration, revegetation or aesthetic value, land-owners who select Nelmac eco-sourced natives are employ-ing the best plants for the job. the homes, the result Stonewood Nelson achieved was hugely gratifying. Their bronze medal build was a tidy four bed-room family home that backed onto a well-es-tablished forest, providing much sought after protection and privacy. With a large front lawn and numerous plants, the property had plenty of room for outdoor enjoyment. The flow of the house worked effortlessly for all purposes of family life, with an open plan layout incorporat-ing the lounge, dining and family room, and a natural colour scheme making for a cosy family area. The Stonewood Homes showhome represents the quality of their craftsmanship to potential clients. Their silver medal winning build sees an efficient use of the outside space to create an area that feels larger than it actually is. It also fea-tures an outdoor fire which adds to the general ambience while inside the home, the 2.4m entry door creates a feeling of spaciousness. The mas-

ter bedroom is cleverly positioned away from the other three rooms to offer privacy and an oasis away from what can often be noisier house members. It took something special to receive the gold medal and Stonewood Homes achieved it with their ‘special design’ home, nestled in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds. With a spectacular view to recommend it, the home was enhanced with a spacious kitchen, four generous size bed-rooms and a durable, low maintenance, shadow-clad Coloursteel corrugated exterior. There is no doubt that one of the key elements to Stonewood Homes Nelsons success, comes from a team who live and breathe the philoso-phy of the business. Director, Rhys Horncastle, has built the company up to its current position of excellence, and has recently made some ma-jor changes to ensure the steadfastness of the business for the future. Now in a business part-nership with General Manager Brent Stewart

(Stew), Stonewood Homes Nelson is benefiting from the strengths of both owners. With 20 years experience in the corporate sector of Firth’s, Brent is well placed to manage the mechan-ics of the business, while Rhys and his 20 years building experience, can focus on the construction and sales side of the business. “Between the two of us, we make a whole. It’s nice for people to know that the business direction is looking well into the fu-ture of Stonewood Homes, and we’re here for the longevity of this region. Our success is going to keep growing and growing because we’re setting a really good foundation for what we’re aiming for,” says Brent. With a mind and the qualifications to operate a successful business, Brent’s merits lie in people management,

business systems and programs as well as experience in sales and con-struction. They have big plans for the future, for their clients, as well as improving their own reputation with business awards and continuing to meet the needs of those who come to them for a new home. “We not only know how to build your home very, very well, but we know how to build in a more efficient way where there is no stress or worry for the clientele. It is a process, from start to finish, that has to be enjoyable for you.” Besides the addition of Brent to the Stonewood Nelson team, their Stoke show-office has also undergone an extensive renovation to better cater to the needs of their clients. With a new reception, planned outdoor display and meeting room, the office facelift

is all part of their future proofing, self improvement process. It’s also the base for the Stonewood team who work away tirelessly, making people’s dream homes a reality. With a num-ber of in-house services on hand, cre-ating the perfect solution to anyone’s housing specifications is easy. Anne Blake offers full drafting capabili-ties to adjust or create plans that will incorporate the features and style of your forever home. The advantage

of having a draughtsperson on site is that they can come up with some-thing totally from scratch. “If some-body’s site is problematic, we’ll find a solution. In saying that there are a huge number of plans at our finger-tips that we can utilise as a base plan,” says Brent. “It helps streamline the process, people’s individual flair and thoughts on how they want to live in their home are gathered by the sales person, and then we can draft a con-

cept plan up that looks like their ideas on paper.” Quantity Surveyor, Barry Gibbs is vital to mak-ing sure there are no surprises when it comes to the cost of the client’s home at the end of the construction process. He works with the nuts and bolts, how it goes together and how much it will all cost, so when a home is priced to a client, they know that’s what they can expect. Once a job starts, project manager Phil Johnson works closely with the sub trades and clients to create a smooth construction process that sticks to the time line. “When we say to somebody it will be finished by ‘this date’, we can achieve that because of Phil’s management of the build. He is also a trade qualified builder of 35 years, so he knows how to keep a site running smoothly by dealing efficiently with problems that arise,” says Brent. With the concept layouts and plans drawn up, it can still be hard to imagine the look of a home and what it will be like to live in. Stonewood Homes Nelson can provide a computer 3d mod-el of your home. This along with the services of professional Interior Designer, are all part of

the high level of customer service you’ll receive when building with Stonewood Homes Nelson. Their interior designer has the eye for detail and the skills to pull the home together into a coherent picture for the client, from floor and wall coverings, colours, textures and styles that give life to living areas. Simone Cook and Helena Omlo are the faces of the business. Helena has been running the office administration since early in the concep-tion of the company, while Simone is their sales professional and show home consultant. She is the one you meet at the very start and is your guide through the sale, design and construc-tion of your home. Simone has the contacts and resources to find land should people come to Stonewood Homes with only an idea, as well as the skills to turn a wish list into some form of reality for them and the other Stonewood staff. “Simone gathers the initial ideas of the clients, researches their needs, meets their families, finds out how they live their life, what features they want in their home, whether it’s total au-tomation, energy efficiency’s, special design

“Having recently moved into our new home, which was built by Rhys Horncastle and his team at Stonewood Homes Nelson, we have no hesitation in recommending Stonewood. From the beginning of the planning stage ‘the team’ were professional and courteous. If we changed something from the original plans we were always met with “Yes, we can do that for you.” There was no re-luctance on their part to meet our requests. The Stonewood team has always acted with integrity and courtesy making the whole process enjoyable. We are delighted with the quality of the building. We can highly recommend Rhys and his team.”

Advert WEDNESDAY 12 November 2014 25TUESDAY 11 November 2014NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly

Meat lovers around Nelson will be licking their lips in anticipation, with news the Mad Butcher is very soon to be opening its doors. On Friday November 14, Nelson franchise owners Dan and Nikki Perrin will be welcoming the public to their new store, on Songer St in Stoke, to celebrate the grand opening. There’s no doubt the Mad Butcher is a firm favourite with kiwi’s, and has been provid-ing quality meat products at great prices since 1971.

With 39 stores around the country already, Dan and Nikki’s shop brings the total to 40, which is not only exciting for them, but for the whole of the franchise. "It's a fantastic opportunity for the people of Nelson to get top quality meat at very competitive prices. The reality is that Mad Butcher shops really do bring the prices of meat down, for example, when the store opened in Christchurch, meat prices there dropped overnight, it is very exciting times for Nelson," says Sir Peter Leitch.

The Mad Butcher has been a reputable source of meat for that summer barbeque, succulent roast and many other delicious meals, and Dan and Nikki are committed to carrying on the good name here in Nel-son. It was a huge factor in deciding to be part of the Mad Butcher in the first place, alongside the influence of the man himself, Sit Peter Leitch. “The Mad Butcher has been in the game since 1971 and that story alone is pretty impressive; and we are very excited to work for an iconic kiwi brand

that is now the Mad Butcher, so that was a big part of it. I also think that speciality food stores like fruit and vegetables and bakeries are starting to go back out on their own, the market is swinging back again

because people are realising there are more options now,” says Dan. The new store has taken over what was previously the Stoke Rugby Clubrooms, but has undergone a massive transfor-mation, from benches and rugby jerseys to lamb legs and sausages. Dan himself completed a butchery apprenticeship af-ter leaving school and then worked at the Riccarton Mad Butcher for six months when it opened. His move to Nelson was prompted by developments in his sport-ing career and he has been a Nelson local for the last 13 years, while continuing to play rugby throughout the country. His repertoire of supporting achievements includes 38 games for the Tasman Makos and around the same for Bay of Plenty, 14 games for the Crusaders and half a dozen

The Mad Butcher franchise is very conscious of the welfare of animals and wants only the best conditions for them, which is why their carcass meat is 100 per cent grown in New Zealand and New Zealand Quality Mark certified; ensuring it complies with the specific requirements of New Zealand. It’s a very exciting time for the locally-owned and

operated store, and everyone is invited to come and check out the new shop on Friday. With 12 other staff on hand to meet the needs of their cus-tomers, Dan and Nikki are looking to hire more to help over the flat out Christmas period. The grand opening will take place this Friday from 7am, and is the perfect opportunity to get in and explore what the newest Mad Butcher has to offer. Sir Peter Leitch will be there to celebrate the oc-casion from 10am - 2pm, along with a number of local sporting celebrities from the Makos, league and basketball, who will be helping him man the barbeque. Giveaways will be on offer, as well as the results of their Facebook competition which is running now. Their normal opening hours will be from 7am until 7pm, seven days a week, so get in there and stock up on the best quality meat at competitive prices.

The friendly Mad Butcher staff are always on hand to help you find the best cut to suit your occasion and can accommodate anyone’s re-quirements. Back Row: Carl Evans, Jordan Muirhead, Jamie Hadfield, Dan Perrin and Logan Huxford. Front Row: Paul Adams, Nikki and Evie Per-rin, Rose Edwards, Debbie Hill, Lisa Leslie, Sue Beaton and McKenzie Gill-Davidson.

This is the fortieth store in the Mad Butcher Franchise. You’ll find it where the old Stoke Rugby Clubrooms used to be on Songer St.

Well, judging from the huge line-up of boat trailers down Akerstsen Street last Saturday, the word is out!Lots of snapper getting caught on long-line and rods over the last two weeks. These pre-spawning snap-per in Tasman Bay are feeding up prior to forming into spawning schools.Once again, the long-line acting as the insurance for those who don’t get them on the rod and reel, known as the “silent assassin”, lying the baits along the bot-tom in wait for the opportunistic snap-per to spot a trail of tasty little baits to chew on.Some very good snapper are getting caught in all depths of water from the cut right over to Abel Tasman side. Many of these fish are in prime condition, around 15-20 lb, with one as big as the magic 30 lbs being caught on Saturday. When we were out we noticed lots of bait school sign in mid to top-wa-ter and witnessed a few bird work-ups with the gannets dive-bombing hard out. This is a great sign of the different types of bait that will start off what looks to be another bump-er season for our local fishery. A couple of the kahawai and a piece of “seaweed fish” my mate caught had lots of small shrimps in them and this along with krill, whitebait, an-chovies and pilchard bait schools is what combines into lots of minerals in the water column to aid another successful season for the survival of the newborn juvenile snapper. On the scallop front it sounds like extra tows are being required in Okiwi to try and get close to quota and size, unless of course you’re a diver and can sift around the edges

to gather keepers where the dredg-es can’t get to. I haven’t heard too much from down the Sounds areas yet but I am sure that with the weather and wa-ter temperatures creeping higher that it won’t be long until the jungle drum sends out the message to visit those magical areas that we have close by for us all to enjoy. The surf-casting fraternity will be starting to get their gears ready as

the snapper come in closer to land-based casting range. Nelson is bless-ed with many beach and coastal locations to give this ground-roots style of fishing a go. Places such as the Tahuna blind channel, Rabbit Island beach, and Kina being some easily accessible spots to set up for a relaxing surf-cast session. So Nelson folk, get yourselves sort-ed and out there to make the most of the early bite. Remember to be courteous at the boat ramps, watch those forecasts and try to avoid those predominant afternoon sea-breezes that can give some smaller boats difficulty on the return trip to harbour. The next Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Social afternoon is on Sat-urday December 7 at 3pm at the Tasman Cruising Clubs awesome venue.Tight lines and keep safe out on the water to all.

Garin College student Thomas Heaton and Marlborough College for Girls’ Sally McMath won their long course races on a chilly open-ing night of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series last Thursday.Thomas recorded eight minutes eight seconds for the 800 metre course that started with a long leg into a strong incoming tide and finished with a fast downstream sprint to the Nelson Yacht Club. Luke Kelly was second in 8min 13sec with Hayden Squance third in 8min 54sec. Sally finished in 9min 3 sec just ahead of Cait-lin Delany (9min 27sec) and Pip Dwyer (9min 49sec). Ben Price and Bryony Marriott were first ashore in the short race over 300m. One hun-dred and fifty-six swimmers competed in the

opening race of the series that continues every Thursday over the summer starting at 6pm.There will be an added incentive for swimmers to compete in this summer’s series after Wild-side Travel donated a trip for one lucky swim-mer and their partner to Samoa for the Samoa ocean race series in August. All travel, accom-modation and entry costs are included in the spot prize that will be drawn at the end of the sea swim series. After each swim this summer, a competitor from the long race will be drawn at random and be eligible for the big prize. At the end of summer, these swimmers will go into the draw to win the big prize - swimmers must com-pete in a minimum of 12 swims over the sum-mer to be eligible for the final draw.

The other day I was walking around the Nelson Market with a friend. We were there for lunch, and I watched my friend struggle to get served. I should mention that due to his past and his culture, his appearance was a little different from mine. The way he dresses, combined with some moko (facial tattoos) was enough to make it difficult to buy lunch. This made me really sad. He’s a very good guy, proud of his culture and doing excellent work in his community. You only have to speak with him for a few seconds to realise that. But he wasn’t being given a chance.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I think we all do this to a certain extent. The natural instinct when we encounter someone who is different from us, is to label them a bit of a freak, or feel uncomfortable, or even fearful of them. When we do this, we end up judging the person by their jacket and missing out on meeting someone interesting.

As a church we are supposed to be good at this, but like any bunch of humans, we don’t get it right all the time either. We do have the example of Jesus of Nazareth, a man who went out of his way to meet people that the rest of society had written off. Jesus is recorded as physically touching people with leprosy, inviting himself to dinner with tax collectors (a hated group in his society), and talking to foreigners.

So can I encourage you to look past appearances, and meet the real people. Even if it’s just to smile and

Three years ago the Church on the Hill decided to improve the support offered to older members of the community. Kay Peterson got the job! Kay is a great example in many ways; firstly because she came to work for

a different church, not the one she is a part of — this is tricky as we all have our ways of doing things and change can be a challenge, but Kay has shown how to do this well.

In her 50s she set out on university study, having left school at 15. She completed her degree and continues to learn and question. She is a lively person to have around.

In addition Kay has been key in setting up the community lunches at Church on the Hill, and the Richmond Community Christmas Lunch. She is an inspiration to us all and we thank God for her.

Kay has networked with many agencies involved in supporting the elderly and her job is not just for the church but anyone in the community who would like some support. If you have any questions about faith, or would just like some advice she will be delighted to meet you. This service is free.

Kay works on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.30 am to 4 pm and can be contacted on 544 8844, or you can email her at [email protected]

Navigation Safety Bylaw: Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting for Waka racing in the Kaiteriteri/Marahau areaThe Motueka Waka Ama club has applied to the Tasman District Council to run an event within the coastal marine areas of Kaiteriteri and Marahau. The planned races will have competing craft and support vessels passing through and occupying the Kaiteriteri swimming and water ski areas at the start and finish of each event. The racing course will be between Kaiteriteri Bay, Sandy Bay and Fishermans Island. Pursuant to the provisions contained in the Navigation Safety Bylaw, the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri swimming and water-ski areas and a uplift of the 5 knot speed restriction for those involved in the annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ event, between the hours of 2.00 pm and 7.30 pm on Friday 14 November 2014, and 8.00 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 15 November 2014, (backup day Sunday 16 November 2014, 8.00 am – 5.00 pm).The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing or swimming from occurring within that area within the time specified. Event marshals have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to Waka Ama and support vessels directly involved in the event between Anawera Point and Guilbert Point, including Fisherman Island but excluding Otuwhero Inlet and Little Kaiteriteri.A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event, and these conditions may be viewed by contacting the Motueka Waka Ama Club, or Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on, Ph. 03 543 8400 during office hours.
