Volume 8, Issue 8 November, 2013 November 12: Duncan McKinnon talks about iconography, landscape and pottery in Southwest Arkansas The program for the November meeting of the Kadohadacho Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society will feature Dr. Duncan McKinnon. Duncan is no stranger to us in southwest Arkansas; he began working with the Kadohadacho Chapter back in 2007 when he was conducting a remote sensing survey for his MA thesis on Battle Mound in Lafayette County. Duncan has continued to work with us through his Ph.D. dissertation— synthesizing historical excavations and new hightech remote sensing data at the Battle Mound site. Moreover, in 2010 Duncan taught an Honors College seminar at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia entitled “Myths, Symbolism and Moundbuilders” (ANTH 4133). Dr. McKinnon is now a newlyminted Ph.D. and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Additionally, he joined the PBS series Time Team America—a cross between a documentary and reality TV program following a team of archeologists as they work on sites around the country. Duncan joined the program for its second season (airing this spring). Come learn about Dr. McKinnon’s explorations of Native American iconography, landscape and pottery here in our own region on Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00pm in the Magnolia Room on the second floor of the Reynolds Center on the campus of Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AR. November 12: Duncan McKinnon talks about iconography, landscape and pottery in Southwest Arkansas

Arkansas Archeology Month 2014 : Call for Programs 

Arkansas Archeology Month 2014 will be celebrated in March with a variety of programs, exhibits, hands‐on activities, and tours at  parks,  museums,  universities,  libraries  and  elsewhere. Archeology  Month  is  an  annual  celebration  commemorating Arkansas's cultural heritage as revealed through the archeology of both  prehistoric  and  historic  eras.  Please  join  this  fun  and educational event by submitting a program for Archeology Month.  

Once  again,  the  theme  will  be  “Celebrate  Archeology.” Programs  can  be  on  any  aspect  of  prehistoric  or  historic archeology, early Arkansas history, or Arkansas's Native Americans. Ideas  from  past  years  include  illustrated  talks,  artifact  exhibits, book  displays,  craft  demonstrations,  open  houses,  and  guided tours.

 Upcoming Events at Historic Washington  

As always there is a lot going on at Historic Washington State Park.    You  can  check  their  website  for  many  events  occurring almost daily: http://www.historicwashingtonstatepark.com/ 

However,  two  of  their  largest,  most  popular  events  are coming  up  in  the  next  couple  of  months…below  is  a  little information  on  the  Civil  War  Weekend  and  the  27th  Annual Christmas and Candlelight.  Civil War Weekend 

The Civil War was one of the most trying times in our nation’s history. During Civil War Weekend, visitors will walk the streets of a 

town  touched by  the hand of war.  We  will  interpret  the many  conflicts  of  the  area when  Washington  was Arkansas's  Confederate Capitol.  Reenactors  from across  the  region will present living  history  demonstrations, including  combat  scenarios, throughout  the  weekend. Guided  tours  of  the  many historic  homes  and  buildings of  the  town will be available, as  well  as  surrey  rides. Contact  the  park  for  a detailed program schedule.   Date:  November  2  ‐ November 3, 2013 Time: 9 am ‐ 5 pm Admission:  $10  adults,  $5

27th Annual Christmas and Candlelight You and your family will be in awe of the natural beauty that 

our  candlelit  streets  provide  as  you  stroll  through  our  historic village.  The  homes  of  yesterday  are  adorned  with  pine  cones, grapevines, magnolia,  and  evergreens.  Decorations, music,  and more  will  set  the  mood  for  your  historic  holiday  experience. Daylight  tours  from  1‐5  p.m.  Candlelight  tours  begin  at  5  p.m. when thousands of luminaries will be lit, and will continue until 8 p.m. Plan time in your schedule to visit William's Tavern, offering a Christmas buffet  from 11 a.m.‐8 p.m. You may also  choose  to enjoy  a horse drawn  surrey  ride or  shop  the  gift  shops  for  that special holiday gift.

Kadohadacho Lab Weekends to Start This Spring By  request  of  the  AAS‐SAU  Research  Station  Board  of 

Advisors we will be launching a Kadohadacho Chapter Laboratory Saturday once a month starting this Spring. 

Starting with Saturday February 22, 2014 we will have a  lab day every LAST SATURDAY of the month—Feb 22, March 29, April 26, & May 31.  These laboratory days will run from 9am until 4pm at the AAS‐SAU Research Station in room 103 of the Bruce Center on the Southern Arkansas University campus  in Magnolia.    If you are interested in getting hands‐on experience with artifacts, this is your chance  to volunteer and  take part  in ongoing  research and inventorying of materials that have been excavated over the  last 46 years right here in in our own back yards!
