Social, cultural and Economic rights

Background • Western tradition of rights

• Found in the American bill of rights

• Found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

• Rights that ‘people may need’ to exist

• More likely to be promoted in the developing world

Beliefs • Believe in increasing ‘human freedoms’ such as ‘freedom of speech’ etc.

Believe in ensuring ‘human development’ through the right to education, healthcare etc.

Supporters USA, Australia, European Nations

Developing countries (usually): Singapore, Malaysia, China

Criticism That other rights (social etc.) should be prioritised over civil and political rights; These rights are overly western.

Development is not an excuse for putting civil and political rights on hold, these are human needs too.
