you ever reflected upon the case ofthose who fled their homes for fear of death, and they were thousands in number? SoAllah said to them, "Die"; then He again gave

them life.266 Indeed Allah is bountiful tomankind, but most of the people areungrateful.

265From here begins a new address. In itthe Muslims have been exhorted to doJihad," i.e., to exert their utmost in the Wayof Allah and make monetary sacrifices forthe cause. At the same time they havebeen warned to guard against those

weaknesses that had led to thedegeneration and downfall of the childrenof Israel.

It will help understand this address, if we keep in mindthe occasion of its revelation. At that time the Muslims, who had been expelled from Makkah a year or soearlier and were living as refugees at Madinah, wereasking over and over again for permission to fight withthe disbelievers who had been persecuting themrelentlessly for years. But, when the permission theythemselves had asked was given, some of them beganto lose heart (Please refer to Al-Baqarah, II : 216). Thatis why two important events from the history of the

Israelites are being related to serve as a fore-warningto the Muslims and to stimulate their zeal and courage.

266 Children of lsrael when they had left Egypt inlarge numbers and were wandering homeless in thedeserts and wildernesses and were very anxious tofind a home for themselves. But when inspired byAllah, the Prophet Moses ordered them to fight againstthe Canaanites and expel them from Palestine andconquer that territory, they showed cowardice andrefused to march forward. Consequently Allah left themto wander in the land for forty years so that thatgeneration should come to an end and a new one be

brought up in the hardships of the desert. Then Allahgave them victory over the Canaanites. Probably"death and second life" refer to these two aspects ofthe exodus

218The Arabs had another wrong notionabout Hajj. They considered it a worldly thingto do any kind of business during the Hajjseason. The Qur'an removes thismisconception also and declares that if apious man observes the Law of Allah andthen does some business to earn hislivelihood, he really seeks the bounty of Allah.

And there is nothing wrong in seeking thebounty of Allah along with seeking Hispleasure

The criterion of success or failure is not theprosperity or adversity of this worldly life, butsuccessful in actual fact will be he who comesout successful in Allah's final judgement, andfailure he who is a failure there. Those whodo not believe in the life-after-death with theabove implications, cannot benefit from theQur'an because the one who entertains' even

the slightest doubt about these; not to speakof rejecting them, can never follow the way oflife which the Qur'an prescribes.

Here the use of the word (ummi) for theHoly Prophet is very significant. This titlewas used to break the national pride and

arrogance of the Jews, who called the non-Jews ummis (gentiles). In this respect, they were so arrogant that, as a nation, notto speak of acknowledging an ummi astheir leader. they were not ready even toconcede basic human rights to thegentiles.
