Who We Are SDF (Seoul Digital Forum) is a major international conference about innovation and inspiration in the

context of the digital age. Striving to achieve a symbiotic ecosystem of technology and humanity, SDF

brings together thought- and action-provoking leaders to delve into the New T.I.M.E.+ [Technology,

Information, Media, Enterprise] agendas and collaborate in shaping solutions for our future.

Established as a non-profit social responsibility initiative, the Forum is organized by SBS, a leading

national broadcasting network in Korea. 2014 marks SDF’s 11th Annual Conference and SBS’s 24th

Anniversary.

What We Do Three Key INgredients of SDF

INSPIRING. IN-DEPTH. INTERACTIVE.

√ INSPIRING - Main Sessions

Every year SDF invites 40-50 brightest minds from around the world in the T.I.M.E.+

[Technology, Information, Media, Enterprise] areas. About 20-25 sessions take place

over the two-day conference, with the formats including solos, panels, conversations

and performances.

√ IN-DEPTH - DeepDive Series

Parallel to the Main Sessions are SDF DeepDive Sessions, a series of special symposiums

designed to take a deeper look into some of the key industry and social issues, and

draft practical solutions with recognized specialists. The solutions put forward at the

sessions are shared with the public via broadcasting, campaigns and policy proposals,

allowing them to trigger positive change in our society.

√ INTERACTIVE - Networking

During the conference and throughout the year SDF organizes networking

opportunities that revolve around the theme(s) of our talks, ranging from casual

meet-ups and official gatherings to exhibitions and concerts. We believe face-to-face

interaction will always remain the most effective way to communicate and collaborate

with SDF community members.

History in Brief Each year SDF strives to canvass a timely agenda that addresses key issues and trends shaping the future of our societies and industries. 2004 The Forum opened under the theme of Digital Convergence, focusing on the question of how

businesses could strengthen their competitiveness in the era that we call the “digital age.”

2005 Dramatically increasing technological capabilities had many people wondering where such capabilities were taking us and for what purpose. Under the theme Quo Vadis Ubiquitous: Charting a New Digital Society, participants came to a consensus that it was not simply about the stunning capabilities of technologies, but about how man could use those technologies to make life better.

2006 Under the theme Being Intelligent: The Next Digital Evolution, the Forum helped to unmask some of the remarkable progress that many industries have made in developing intelligent technologies. As we did so, we also discovered the need to change some of our existing systems in order to experience the full potential of these innovations.

2007 The Forum was held under the theme Media Big Bang! Impact on Business & Society. Participants shared their extensive insights on how media is being redefined, and exchanged ideas on how to cope with the economic, political and social implications of this.

2008 The Forum was held under the theme Imagination: Explore T.I.M.E. (Technology, Information, Media & Entertainment), Space and Beyond. The Forum examined the power of imagination to inspire change and evolution in order to push the human race beyond.

2009 Under the theme Story: A New Chapter, the Forum explored the innovative and inspiring ‘stories’ of the digital age from the T.I.M.E. + industries, while also reflecting on how the global financial crisis handed the world a major opportunity to rethink conventional paradigms.

2010 Wrapping up the first decade of the new millennium, SDF2010 was held under the theme

Renaissance Now: Shaping Another Breakthrough to discuss how we can craft and propel a new millennium Renaissance. The Forum contemplated the Renaissance’s legacy of encouraging a daring and creative spirit and explored who will be the Renaissance men and women to shape the coming breakthroughs.

2011 Themed Connected: Into a Shared Future, SDF2011 delved into the true meaning of

connectedness amidst the transformative mobile revolution. Recognizing that connectedness is deeply rooted in history, the Forum discussed how we could make the most of technology-enabled hyperconnectivity for us to become more active agents of positive change and innovation.

2012 Extending our gaze beyond hyperconnectivity, SDF2012 was held under the theme Coexistence:

Technology, Humanity and Great Hope for the Future. The event aimed to carve out new imperatives for meaningful coexistence between humans and technology, and how the coexistence can be materialized.

2013 Looking back at the decade of SDF, the 10th Anniversary SDF put forward ECOllaboration:

Solutions for Tomorrow as the theme to pave the way for the next decade of vision-making. Putting on center stage the notion of a Collaborative Ecosystem, the event explored conditions for and promises of successful collaboration to build a sustainable and brighter tomorrow.

Introducing SDF 2014’s Theme

Innovative Wisdom Technology for the Common Good

Innovation often stems from the ingenious ideas of an exceptional individual. What really powers the ideas to reshape the world, however, is our wisdom, the collective reservoir of human experience. In a yin-yang kind of dynamic balance, innovation and wisdom together have been oiling the wheels of civilization. The popularization of personal computers empowered individual users, with the increasingly connected World Wide Web ecosystem catalyzing collective intelligence at a planetary scale. Despite these advances, however, the benefits of technology are still far from evenly distributed. Digital technology continues to be both a boon and a bane for our society, providing a great source of happiness and a locus of fearful control and surveillance alike.

“Before we acquire great power we must acquire wisdom to use it well.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

We now put forward “Innovative Wisdom” as a new paradigm to buttress technological innovations and minimize side effects that they inevitably carry. 2014 is expected to bring exciting opportunities: The Internet of Everything promises to create new value and wearable technologies are set to be smarter and more human-friendly; the open-source culture is better leveraging the wisdom of the crowd and appropriate technology is receiving renewed attention for its simplicity and accessibility. What is the innovative wisdom that can help us steer these opportunities in the right direction, and build technologies for the common good? After a decade of identifying and scrutinizing digital trends, the Seoul Digital Forum 2014 now embarks on a new journey towards a more mature, sustainable and collective happiness – and a key to begin our successful journey, we believe, lies in ‘innovative wisdom’.

May 21 Wednesday

Opening Ceremony & Keynote Address | 09:10-10:30

√ EXPLORE

“The Beginning of ‘New TIME’” Opening Remarks LEE Woongmo Chief Executive Secretary, Seoul Digital Forum /President & CEO, SBS

Keynote Address [KEY1 ‘Connect’] 09:30-10:00 Connecting the Other Billions: Innovative Wisdom for Making the Internet Truly Global Today we are enjoying good connectivity. People, services, data and devices are creating immense networks, and at the kernel of this connectivity is, of course, what nearly half of the world now takes for granted – the internet. By 2020, 5 billion people, or 70% of the world population, are expected to be brought online making the internet practically one of the world’s most important pieces of infrastructure. Kilnam Chon developed Asia’s first internet called the SDN (Software Development Network) in 1982 and has been the driving force behind its dazzling evolution in Asia and the world. The internet pioneer says the coming decade poses critical questions that are both daunting and exciting: How can we re-imagine the internet so that it can be a truly global platform for communication and innovation? What kind of innovative wisdom does this age call for to make the best of it while fending off the side effects, expected or unexpected? Chon invites all of us to come together and create the internet - not as we know it, but as we imagine it. Visionary CHON Kilnam Professor Emeritus, KAIST / Professor, Keio University / Pioneer of the Asian Internet [KEY2 ‘Capture’] 10:00-10:30 Connected for a Purpose: Making Every Second on the Internet Count More than 2 billion people worldwide spend a portion of their day on the internet for various reasons - and some of them, simply out of habit. What if we can make something out of the massive amount of time spent online? Turning our everyday online activities into collective wisdom that brings practical benefits to our lives, Luis von Ahn has been offering innovative solutions to this challenge, often unbeknownst to us. The pioneer of crowdsourcing behind the creation of CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA is now taking up the challenge of reconnecting the internet that is ‘lost in translation’ with his latest venture, Duolingo. The free language-learning platform has generated a community of over 20 million in less than two years, revolutionizing the way we learn, teach and translate languages online. Luis will describe what led him to create Duolingo and how we can make every second on the internet improve the quality of our lives and of the internet itself. Visionary Luis von AHN Co-Founder & CEO, Duolingo / Creator, CAPTCHA & reCAPTCHA Break 10:30-10:50

[KEY4 ‘Unprejudiced’] 11:10-11:30 Innovating Phone App for the Smart 2.0 Era We have witnessed great strides in the field of mobile telecommunications over the past three decades. Thanks to the remarkable advancements in network speed and smartphone performance, the industry is currently flooded with mobile services such as games, messenger services and video contents. However, ‘phone,’ the most frequently used app in smartphones, was left behind, remaining unchanged all these years. Thus, we made it our task to adapt this app to the Smart 2.0 Era, marked by convergence, connectivity and integration. Here, we present ‘T Phone,’ SK Telecom’s innovative communication platform that will take the ‘phone’ to the next level. Visionary WI Euiseok Executive Vice President & Head of Product Planning Division, SK Telecom [KEY5 ‘Wear’] 11:30-11:50 *TBA Visionary Eric FRIEDMAN Co-Founder & CTO, Fitbit Lunch 11:50-12:55

√ ENLIGHTEN [KEY6 ‘Programmable’] 12:55-13:15 Raspberry Pi: Everyday Programming for Everyone Computers have become an inseparable part of our everyday lives and youngsters cannot imagine a world without smartphones, tablets and the Internet. While they are confident users of technology, few have an understanding of how this technology works - let alone how to ‘program’ such a device. In the rush towards sleek, consumer-orientated devices, the opportunity to explore computing and to learn to program has disappeared. Alan Mycroft, Cambridge professor and co-founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, illustrates how the $35 credit card-sized Raspberry Pi computer re-creates the opportunity to learn and re-learn computing through fun, innovative and creative projects - for children and adults alike. Visionary Alan MYCROFT Co-Founder & Trustee, Raspberry Pi Foundation / Professor of Computing, Cambridge University [KEY7 ‘Working Together’] 13:15-13:35 Pizza for Everyone! How Online Communities are Innovating Altruism Online communities connect individuals and issues related to social consciousness to change how the world works together. From giving pizza to those in need to organizing the world’s largest online gift exchange, people on sites like reddit are uniting to make the world a better place. More and more, people are discovering the power of each one of us to help drive positivity and spread good online. How can reddit and other forms of social media achieve a greater sense of the common good for humanity? ‘Working together' is the key, emphasizes Lia Navarro, Director of Entertainment Strategy and Sales at reddit.com. She will be speaking about her experiences and perspectives from some of the earliest days of reddit to the present, and how communities can unite to inspire. Visionary Lia NAVARRO Director, Entertainment Strategy & Sales, Reddit [KEY8 ‘Borderless’] 13:35-13:55 Shared Ledger: The implications of Bitcoin Technology beyond Finance A new technology often elicits both hopes and fears for the future, and Bitcoin is no exception. Current controversies surrounding Bitcoin mainly stem from the conception of the technology simply as a new virtual ‘currency’. Tony Young-Suc Lyu, CEO of Korea’s first Bitcoin exchange Korbit, tells us we need to understand its less obvious underlying technology called the ‘blockchain’ to grasp a fuller picture of the enormous potential it offers. For the first time in human history, the blockchain is making available a globally shared ledger. And the technology is about more than money – it can be a paradigm-shifting platform with implications much broader than we can imagine. Tony shares with us the fundamentals of Bitcoin that have many prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalists and entrepreneurs enthralled. Visionary Tony LYU Co-Founder & CEO, Korbit (Korea Bitcoin Exchange)

10

[KEY9 ‘Simply Brilliant’] 13:55-14:35 Lightbulb Moment: Bringing Free Light into Dark Homes Worldwide In 2002, the Brazilian mechanic Alfredo Moser had a flash of inspiration, coming up with a way to light his house during the day without electricity. Using a clear plastic bottle filled with water and a dash of bleach, the simple invention, known as the ‘Moser Lamp’, channels the sun’s rays to bring free illumination of between 40W and 60W flooding into homes worldwide, particularly in regions in which electricity is a luxury. In the Philippines, Illac Diaz of the MyShelter Foundation has worked tirelessly to spread the bright idea and take it to the next level, developing a version that functions night and day using simple solar panels and batteries. His ‘Liter of Light’ project has installed more than 140,000 bottle bulbs in the Philippines alone, helping to generate self-reliance and employment at the same time. The British journalist Claire Rigby brings Alfredo Moser and Illac Diaz together to talk about their brilliant, life-transforming ideas. Visionaries Alfredo MOSER Inventor, Moser Lamp (Liter of Light) Illac Angelo DIAZ Founder & Executive Director, MyShelter Foundation Symposiarch Claire RIGBY Editor-in-Chief, Time Out São Paulo / Freelance Writer

Intermission & Networking 14:35-15:05

√ INVOLVE [KEY10 ‘Universal’] 15:05-15:35 Innovative Wisdom for a Symbiotic Media Ecosystem and Audience Welfare As the boundaries between broadcasting and telecommunications blur, and new media and mobile media spread widely, the media ecosystem is experiencing unprecedented changes. While the advancement of media technologies and services brings about the revolution of communication, it is also true that putting too much emphasis on technologies themselves may intensify competitions among industry players and alienate the audience. What is a desirable media ecosystem? What should terrestrial broadcasters do to enhance the welfare of the audience? And what will be the next-generation free-of-charge, universal broadcasting services? Professor Rhee June Woong, CSA Commissioner Emmanuel Gabla and Professor Sylvia Chan-Olmsted canvass media and broadcasting for the common good. Visionaries Emmanuel GABLA Commissioner, CSA, France Sylvia CHAN-OLMSTED Professor of Telecommunications, College of Journalism and Communications, University of Florida Symposiarch RHEE June Woong Professor, Department of Communication, Seoul National University

[KEY11 ‘Empathy’] 15:35-15:55 I Comfort Her: What Homicide Watch Teaches Us About Data, Audience, and Designing News Around Users The creators of Homicide Watch D.C join us to talk about inventing the modern crime and courts beat. In building the acclaimed murder-tracking website, Laura and Chris Amico used the power of digital publishing, news apps, document libraries, and user-centered design. This new interpretation of beat reporting has been called truly digital native, more Wikipedia than crime blotter. They’ll share their lessons from building Homicide Watch and demonstrate how those techniques can be used to build better, more engaged journalism on any subject. Visionaries Laura AMICO CEO, Glass Eye Media Chris AMICO CTO, Glass Eye Media

11

[KEY12 ‘Understanding’] 16:00-16:20 The Math Class that Leaves No Student behind We are told that everyone should study math. And we know not everyone is good at. Learning math is a sequential process in which each basic concept is a building block for more advanced ones. This nature is often at odds with the traditional education system: the one-to-many teaching method generates a large number of students who cannot keep up with class, and the standardized print textbooks enforce non-interactive problem solving. KnowRe has converted granular-level math concepts, or ‘knowledge units’, and their combinations into computer algorithms. Its online education platform provides individual students with a completely personalized curriculum by analyzing their mastery of each knowledge unit and identifying gaps in understanding. Simon Seojoon Kim, co-founder and CPO of KnowRe, shares the winds of change beginning to blow through the classrooms in Korea and the US. He envisions digital learning that leaves no student behind. Visionary Simon Seojoon KIM Co-Founder & CPO, KnowRe

[KEY13 ‘Emotional Innovation’] 16:20-16:40 Creative Connectivity and the Age of Emotional Innovation Creative connectivity is pushing the boundaries of simple remote connectivity. Kwame Ferreira, founder & CEO of Kwamecorp, will go through a few of his startups, technologies and processes which are ushering in a new age of creative connectivity. He shares what it means for the planet we live in when we truly design for wisdom and happiness. Visionary Kwame FERREIRA Founder & CEO, Kwamecorp

[KEY14 ‘Radical Connectivity’] 16:40-17:20 The End of Big: Reshaping the World for the Better We are at a moment in history as exciting and revolutionary as when Democracy first emerged in Greece more than 2000 years ago. Our traditional institutions are being disrupted in radical ways. Technology has drastically improved our ability to connect instantly, constantly, and globally, and it is altering the power of business, politics, and culture with breathtaking speed. The opportunities created by these changes can open up a world of possibility - a world that is both exciting and compelling, as long as we are prepared. Nicco Mele will examine the unprecedented power that individuals now have to reshape and reimagine the world for the better. Visionary Nicco MELE Technologist / Faculty, Harvard Kennedy School / Author, The End of Big Symposiarch YOON Youngchul Professor, Department of Communication, Yonsei University End of Day 1

DAY 2 May 22 Thursday

√ REASON Keynote Address | 09:10-10:30 [KEY15 ‘Uncommon Sense’] 09:10-09:50 Reinventing Sherlock Holmes: The Return of Innovative Wisdom Amidst a deluge of crime TV series with bleeding-edge forensic techniques and contraptions returned a modern Sherlock. Freed from his deerstalker hat and pipe, the iconic ‘consulting’ detective now has the internet, GPS and a smartphone in his pocket. The contemporary reinvention, however, is also about things that remain ever more powerful in this digital age – Sherlock’s sharp observational skills, deductive reasoning and human relationships. The creative pair behind BBC’s mega-hit Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue, tell us about what makes their characters and stories stay relevant and intriguing, whatever age we live in. Visionaries Steven MOFFAT Co-Creator, Executive Producer & Writer, Sherlock / Executive Producer & Lead Writer, Doctor Who Sue VERTUE Producer, Sherlock / Board Director, Hartswood Films

[KEY17 ‘Mind-reading’] 10:10-10:30 Building a ‘Wiser’ Supercomputer: Help Watson Tackle Humanity’s Biggest Challenges IBM’s Watson is arguably the closest we have to an ‘intelligent’, ‘thinking’ computer. After its much-publicized win against human Grand Masters at Jeopardy! in 2011, the then-bedroom-sized supercomputer has shrunken to the size of three stacked pizza boxes with an 25-fold performance improvement. Its applications are fast-expanding from creating new recipes, streamlining businesses to revolutionizing healthcare systems and cancer research. Now its breakthrough cognitive capabilities accessible anywhere via a cloud-based API, Watson is presenting us with an unprecedented opportunity to tap into our collective wisdom - to make it not only smarter but wiser, and together solve some of the biggest global challenges for humanity. Visionary Rob HIGH IBM Fellow / VP & CTO, Watson Solutions, IBM Software Group

Break 10:30-10:50

√ BELIEVE [KEY18 ‘Moving Design’] 10:50-11:10

Everyone’s a Designer (Whether You Realize It or Not) Every design has a purpose that goes beyond visualizing ideas - it should be able to connect people’s minds and change their behaviors. A designer is a person who solves problems between users and products, users and services. The path-breaking, creative solutions do not arise purely by chance or come from natural-born gifts, but are the results of painstaking training. Woowa Brothers developed Korea’s top food delivery app called “Baedalui Minjok (Delivery People)” that advertises restaurant information more easily, accurately, cheaply and, most importantly, playfully. It is rejuvenating the industry previously dependent on door-to-door flyers, creating a vibrant culture around the restaurants and customers. What kind of work ethic and environment do we need to turn ideas into action, and into a new culture for everyone involved? Kim Bongjin, CEO of Woowa Brothers, believes that we all have the ability to tackle a problem or two on our own, and bring small changes in our society – that we all are designers. He delivers a recipe for creative confidence. Visionary KIM Bongjin CEO, Woowa Brothers

13

[KEY19 ‘Cure’] 11:10-11:30

This Wearable Can Help Cure Alzheimer’s Disease There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia that is expected to affect 1 in 85 people worldwide by 2050. Kyongsik Yun, neuroscientist and founder of Ybrain, unveils a breakthrough technology that could potentially put an end to one of the biggest global health challenges of our time - a hairband that measures and modifies the brain signals of Alzheimer’s disease patients. Joined by medical journalist Dong-chan Cho, Yun canvasses the technology’s possibilities and areas for improvement to make an Alzheimer’s disease-free world a reality. Visionary YUN Kyoungsik Founder & CEO, Ybrain Symposiarch CHO Dongcharn Medical Correspondent, SBS / Neurosurgeon

[KEY20 ‘Communication & Reflection’] Digital Utopia vs. Digital Dystopia: In Search of Innovative Wisdom 11:30-12:00 Towards an Information Utopia: Information Technology for Communication One of the most significant purposive values that we expect from the era of information technology is communication. An ideal information society requires both technological infrastructure and a human-oriented community built on the open exchange of information, knowledge and emotions – such society, we may call, an information utopia. Reaching this utopia necessitates the completion of the following three key tasks: First is enabling the fair distribution of information based on information-sharing, that is, information justice to give all members of society a right to participate; second is effective management of online privacy, which has emancipatory functions but also can cause communication breakdowns, information distortions and even cybercrimes; lastly we need to keep away from the propensity to seek complacency in the world of information networks and convenient apps. Socrates’ aphorism “Know Yourself” holds also true in this age of information where people have never really gotten lost. Korea’s distinguished justice theorist and philosopher Hwang KyungSig introduces innovative wisdom that can help us reach our digital utopia. Visionary HWANK Kyung-sig Professor Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, Seoul National University

Digital Dystopia: Connected with Everybody While Losing Oneself It is true that technological developments have made ‘our’ lives on Earthconnected in one way or another. The widening digital divide, however, tells usthe benefits of technology are reaching still a limited number of people and the conceptions of who ‘we’ are rather distorted. Even the majority of the beneficiaries find themselves trapped in the overarching power relations that operate in the digital network. The bigger problem is that we are syncing our languages and thoughts with the syntax of digital technology, concomitantlyletting the technology to (re)configure our identity. In short, a digital dystopia can be conceptualized as the world where the fundamental question of “who we are” is forgotten. Keeping away from the dystopia calls for our wise innovation. And that begins from together envisioning an ideal world through self-reflection - something Winston Smith in Orwell’s 1984 did by keeping asecret journal. Leading philosopher of technology Son WhaChul warns of the traps and risks of a digital dystopia, and shares with us his wisdom that leadsus to a digital utopia. Visionary SON Wha-Chul Professor, Global Leadership School, Handong Global University

√ QUESTION [KEY21 ‘Bridging by Sharing’] 13:05-13:25 New ICT Builds Bridges for Everyone, for the Common Good All humans are more or less double-minded due to their innate desire to survive: it is human nature to seek both liberty and equality, both companionship and solitude. This double-mindedness is destined for eternal conflict. ICT is the bridge and the window through which we can ease these divisions. Let’s take a deeper look at the cases of the wise convergence of ICT and other industries that are helping us realize the common good. Lee Sangchul, CEO of LG U+ and president of the Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, shares with us his vision for the common, greater good. Visionary LEE Sangchul CEO, LG U+ / Vice Chairman, LG

[KEY22 ‘Creativity Within’] 13:25-13:45 *TBA Visionary Mark RANDALL Chief Strategist, VP Creativity, Adobe Systems

[KEY23 ‘Unwalled Curiosity’] 13:45-14:05

Tapping into the Hidden Innovator: Jack Andraka’s 199 Rejection Letters and 3-Cent Cancer Detection Sensor The terms ‘science’ and ‘cancer research’ invoke images of academic papers, professional credentials and fenced-off research facilities. What took Jack Andraka, a Maryland high school student, to develop a revolutionary 3-cent paper sensor for the early detection of pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancers were his curiosity, perseverance and the information on the internet. The young scientist tells us why we should democratize ‘science’ and empower hidden innovators – because everyone’s curiosity deserves a chance to change the world for the better. Visionary Jack ANDRAKA Cancer Researcher & Scientist / 2012 Intel Gordon E. Moore Award Winner

[KEY24 ‘Seeing without Seeing’] 14:05-14:25 Seeing the World without Seeing It Taking photos as a blind photographer is like going on a fishing trip. When you go flyfishing the whole environment is investigated; you learn about the fishes’ favorite food, their habits and fears. You learn to cast and play with well-crafted tools. Then, if you are lucky and skilled, you catch a fish. You touch it briefly as you unhook it and let it go. The satisfaction is the confirmation. This is what taking photos is for PeteEckert. He cannot see his own work but sees it better than sighted viewers do in galleries. He knows exactly what he produces - it is a fish he lets slip into the stream of the sighted world. The award-winning visual artist tells us an inspiring tale of ‘seeing without seeing’ and a true vision that can help us better understand the world that we are surrounded by. [KEY27 ‘Learn from Nature’] 15:35-15:55 Learn from Nature: Innovation toward Future Robots by Principle Extraction from Biology In order to usher in the age of ‘humanistic robots’, we need to turn to nature. In small ways and large, examples abound. Rescue robots in disaster zones and assistive robots for the mobility-impaired all embody the principles of animal locomotion. For the ideas and inspirations from nature to materialize themselves as interdisciplinary innovations, we need to begin at the beginning – understanding the basic principles. Sangbae Kim, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Biomimetic Robotics Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), introduces a new robotic innovation, ‘principle extraction’ from biology. This innovation is epitomized by his creations including Stickybot that employs the world’s first synthetic directional dry adhesive inspired by geckos, and the MIT Cheetah, designed after the fastest land animal. What does it mean to design robots that are human-oriented and what can we learn from those robots? Nature surely holds important clues to those questions, but it is our innovative wisdom that gives us the answers that are not only technologically smart but more caring and empowering. Visionary KIM Sangbae Director, Biomimetic Robotics Lab / Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT [KEY28 ‘A Duet’] 16:00-16:20 Why We Will Love Robots that Makes Mistakes Most of us conceptualize robots as precise, zero-fault and uncreative machines that simply do as they are told, quickly and efficiently. We also tend to think the robots that do not fit into this neat description would lead to a horrendous robot apocalypse. Guy Hoffman, a roboticist whose colorful experience ranges from animation, acting to jazz music, questions this assumption by developing robots that "think with their bodies", plan less, improvise more and take chances, even at the risk of making mistakes. He tells us this makes for robots that people actually prefer, and that may better fit our homes, offices, schools and hospitals. Technology is not necessarily a quest for perfection – and the fact that we prefer less than perfect technology may teach us something important about human nature.
