Plant Genetic Resources Ⅰ. Introduction

Plant Genetic Resources: Genetic material of plant origin of actual or potential value( ITPGRFA)

Genetic Material : Any material of plant, animal, microbial or other origin containing functional units of heredity

Biological Resources : Genetic resources, organisms or parts thereof, populations, or any other biotic component of ecosystems with actual or potential use or value for humanity

Biological Diversity : Variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystem and the ecological complexes of which they are part

Assessment of PGR

v Objectives

- understand the spectrum of the collection : prepare future use, enlarging diversity

- select targeted materials to promote use : increase the usage

- find unknown traits : widening the usage

v Components

- Evaluation: systematic determination of accession’s merit, worth and significance,

using criteria governed by a set of standards

- Characterization : describing the individual quality of the accession

- Qualitative traits : monogenic, only influenced by a single gene

- Quantitative traits : showing continued variation caused sum of several small

effects of the gene
