Risks team handles the design, development, and underwriting of tailored programs for sophisticated hospital and physician group buyers of medical professional liability. The right individual will have extensive knowledge of the underwriting of HPL and PPL. Our team works in a highly collaborative manner with our Claims and Risk Control professionals. You should be able to work independently and be highly technically proficient in the medical malpractice business segment. The position is currently based in our Farmington, CT office, but we can base this position at a different location for the right candidate. Responsibilities: (1) Underwrites assigned accounts within underwriting guidelines and presents recommendations to roundtable committee. Accounts may include financially distressed accounts, mergers and acquisitions, and outstanding claims; (2) Rates each underwritten account utilizing the rating plan and makes pricing recommendations to roundtable committee; (3) Manages assigned broker relationships and establishes senior level contacts via travel to broker locations, client meetings, and industry conferences; (4) Mentors less experienced underwriters and assistants. Provides underwriting guidance and training, negotiations skills training, and guides broker development; (5) Monitors competitive and legal environment through broker discussions, industry conference participation, and consultation with OBPI claims personnel and monitoring counsel.

Requirements: Knowledge and previous underwriting of HPL, understanding of PPL is a plus. Highly complex underwriting, negotiation, marketing, and management skills are required. Position requires an in-depth knowledge of assigned business/product segments. Must also be able to quickly determine the impact of new or proposed legislation, claim and legal environment and competitive landscape in order to modify the underwriting business strategy as needed. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent teamwork and communications skills for internal as well as broker development purposes. Requires an in-depth knowledge of corporate financial statements (balance sheet, cash flow statement, income statement, 10K, 10Q, proxy statements, notes associated with each statement, etc.) as well as knowledge of the assigned business segment (e.g. hospital workflow, staffing ratios, bed days, admissions). Must also be able to quickly determine the impact of new or proposed legislation in order to modify the underwriting plan as needed. In-depth contract knowledge of terms and conditions associated with assigned product(s). Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will have 5-7 years hospital professional liability underwriting experience or equivalent education/experience. Professional insurance designation is preferred
