This year's Lenten theme is "Our Journey Home". Like the Prodigal Son, we at some point realize we are not where we want to be. From that realization begins our journey home. To symbolize our journey, our youth group cut out footprints that we used during our Ash Wednes-day service. On each footprint is written a thought or a word that encourages us to take the first step on our journey home. When the footprints were ready Kate Barloon and Dorothy Malek made a trail, symbolizing our journey, from the back of the sanctuary leading up to the communion table and cross in the front of the church. Each Sunday in Lent we will talk about our journey - how to stay on the path and how to find our way back to it when we stray. Like the father in the story, God is waiting to welcome us on our journey home.
We now have an assortment of shirts and
sweatshirts available on display in the Friendship
Room of the church. Our new logo was developed
by Audra Kaiser. Thanks, Audra. Contact the
church office with any questions.

On January 31 a brave group traveled to Sundown Ski Resort near Dubuque and had a blast flying down the mountain – well some of
them flew – and coming home with not one single broken bone in the bunch.
We were excited to watch the Super Bowl together the next week. A few of the guys went outside and played some snow football. We
signed some Valentines that were delivered to the Buchanan County Health Center.
On Valentine’s Day a special guest came to give some valuable – maybe even life saving information! Iowa State Trooper Jim Smith
(also known as Kathy’s husband) came and talked about his experiences and gave some very inspirational thoughts about living a
Christian life. He was a blessing to us and we thank him!
Most recently the gang gave a try at winning on Trivia Night at our church and a good time was had by all.

Hi! I’m John Klotzbach. Except when I was living out-of-state, I have been going to this church my whole life. I even have a few memories of the old church when it was down the street. My Sunday school teacher in Kindergarten was Mary Peterson, who herself is still an active member. I remember playing under the new pews, being an acolyte, the communicants class trip to the Basilica in Dyersville, Family Camps at Camp Wyoming, Synod School in Jr High (and later when I moved back to Iowa), Christmas caroling, VBS & the Parables from nature filmstrips, and family activities with the Mariners group.
I was the first high school youth of our church to be ordained as an elder and sit on the Session. I was on the Spiritual Life committee and served on the Pulpit Committee that invited Pastor BJ Ukena to town. I stepped down when I went to college at UNI.
Although I got involved more with student government than campus ministries, I still enjoyed the discussion I had with other students who were recruiting for some of those organizations. A lesson I learned there was that some people have to evangelize from a script and not from their heart. That could also be why I like to volunteer for smaller groups that are less organized and beholden to larger organizations. Except the Democrats; They’re big, but still enough disorganized for my taste.
I graduated from UNI with a BA in Computer Information Systems, lived a few months in the Twin Cities, worked a few months for Johnson Appliance, and eventually got a job in Chicago at a bank. I worked my way up from supporting the Human Resources department’s computer needs to managing the help desk and supporting LAN/WAN/Mainframe/Internet connectivity. I have lived in Chicago’s northern suburbs and downtown off Michigan Avenue. I’ve met with the ‘suits’ in the AT&T tower and worked with building engineers in sub-sub basements a block form Daley Plaza.
After thirteen years, I decided to give up the screwdriver and 24-hour pager and become a Project Manager at another bank. After two years there, the bank made a serious error with a big downtown development loan. They eventually lost $150 million. They cut the budgets, the projects and then the Project Manager (me). They eventually let go all but a hand full of long term employees before selling their Chicago branch.
But providence reigned! My mom announced that she was going to get her knees replaced, So I decided to come back to Iowa for awhile and look after her. Well, that was about six years ago. In that time I have reconnected with my hometown, become more involved in local activities and of course my home church.
Since being back I have made new friends, got a part-time job at the Bulletin Journal and am even back on the session and going to Camp Wyoming. One of the blessings of being back in town came right away with the 2006 youth mission trip to Des Moines. The simple lessons I learned from the kids and the shelter volunteers were incredible. I will always remember my special gifts: They needed a male chaperone, with a valid drivers license and most importantly could take the time to be away from home. From the trip I also learned the difference a plastic bag could make in someone’s life, especially if it was filled with food.
My journey in faith continues. It is ironic, because it was from my journeys as my mom’s chauffer to her Presbytery meetings in Iowa City, that I met and got to know members of the Presbytery office, including General Presbyter Harry Olthoff. I also enjoyed going to Presbytery meetings and learning more about our church and its various missions.
A few short weeks ago, I got the call. It was not quite the Holy Spirit telling me to drop everything and go to Seminary. It was Harry on behalf of the Nominating Committee with a question: Would I consider putting my name into nomination for General Assembly Commissioner? After a few general questions about dates and duties, I slowly realized deep down there was a spiritual calling. At the February 6 Presbytery meeting, that call was enhanced by the wonderful commissioning ceremony.
Stepping up to the front, I looked about the room and I saw friends from my end of the presbytery, Camp Wyoming retreat friends and friends from the Presbytery Office. I have been to meetings where people are nominated to fill a slot or perform a duty. Not much pomp and circumstance. They go off, accomplish the task or attend a meeting, report back and thanked for their service. The commissioning ceremony gave me a deeper sense of service and an opportunity to initiate a bond with my fellow commissioners.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of developing our church polity, prayerfully resolving church conflicts and supporting church missions, all in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And with God’s help, I will.

You can if it’s part of a prayer quilt. The quilters and sewers of the
Prayers and Squares Quilting Ministry meet to make quilts on the 2nd
and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 9:00am to 12:00 noon in the
Fellowship Hall. Individual members of the congregation then finish these
quilts by tying knots in the quilt after each worship service. As each knot
is tied, a silent prayer is offered for someone in special need. The quilt is
then given to that person. This is not just a gift of a quilt; it is a gift of
love and prayer. It is an affirmation of our faith in God and our belief in
His power to comfort, strengthen and heal. Donations of fabric, batting,
and materials are welcome. Visitors and new sewers/quilters are encour-
aged to join us at any time.
