Context

• Fishing has long been a vital economic activity for aboriginal groups in British Columbia and in recent years it has become an important economic driver for aboriginal communities in the Atlantic, North and freshwater fisheries in Central Canada.

• The key themes discussed at the Forum include training/skills development, aquaculture, marketing and attracting capital investment

• The four themes of NAFFII are essential elements for aboriginal communities to understand in order to seize the opportunities available in a modern commercial fisheries.

• The goal is that everyone participating in the Forum will see opportunities for themselves and my expectation is that economic growth from sustainable fisheries is a common goal to which all can agree
