2. STEM INTERNSHIP MID-SUMMER RETREAT

The STEM Internship Program held a mid-summer retreat at the Alisal Campus of

Hartnell College on July 17, 2015. The current STEM summer interns gathered for a day

of professional development that included abstract and poster session preparation

workshops. The interns participated in a “mock symposium” with staff and students

from partner institutions CSU Monterey Bay and UC Santa Cruz who provided

guidance and mentorship as they prepare for the upcoming STEM Symposium on

August 21-22, 2015 at Hartnell’s main campus. In addition, the Hartnell STEM Interns

were able to meet with Hartnell alumni who are now seniors at UCSC.

The evening portion of the event included a presentation by Norm Groot, Executive

Director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau. He

shared information on the abundance of career

opportunities in the agricultural industry as well as

the high need for a quality workforce for the future

of the Salinas Valley.

Approximately 90 student interns participated in the

7-hour event that included invited parents and

family members for the evening activities. Our first

STEM Internship family support discussion was

facilitated by our Director of K-12 STEM Programs, Maggie Melone and Yulianna

Ortega from the STEM Diversity Program at UCSC.

The Hartnell College Counseling Department hosted two days of counselor training on

July 13 - 14, 2015 on the Main Campus. The focus of the training was to ensure

counselors were trained on best practices for counseling and advising students as

well as getting updated on the legislative changes of SB-1456- The Student Success

Act. Survey feedback from the workshop participants was overwhelmingly positive

with the overall feeling of a productive format for the two-day training.

Dr. Hortencia Jiménez was invited as the keynote speaker at the Scholars Symposium

sponsored by the College Success Scholarship Program. The event was held at

Evergreen Community College in San Jose on July 10, 2015. While addressing former

their goals.

On July 22, 2015, nine members of our

leadership team joined Board of Trustees

member, Candi DePauw in the 2015 Bob

Johnson Ag Tour: a glimpse of how the Salinas

Valley produces healthy food for a nation!

This is an annual event produced by Monterey

County Agricultural Education, Inc. The mission

is to foster respect and appreciation of

Monterey County’s number one industry –

agriculture.

“The tour was an education in itself,” shared

Stephen Garcia, Interim VP of Administrative

Services. “Thanks to board member Candace and others who hosted the tour.”

“The tour was very insightful and informative. It walked us through the various career

opportunities from seed and soil science to hydrogeology,” said Eric Becerra, Director

of HEP. “But most importantly, it highlighted the resilience and economic contribution

of our Farmworker community to the Salinas Valley.” Photo- Front Row, Renata Funke, Olivia Davalos, Eric Becerra, and Drew Butler.
