    Applications

    of Continuous

    Process Catalysts

Continuous Process Catalysts are heterogeneous catalysts for fixed bed orfluid bed reactions carried out in continuous mode. They are frequently usedin large-scale production of chemicals, e.g. bulk chemicals, and numerousother applications exist.

The main metal component may be either a base metal or a precious metal.Combinations of base metals are very often used. Fixed bed catalysts maytake the form of pellets, tablets or extrudates. Alumina, silica and titania arethe most commonly used support materials for our fixed bed catalysts.

We have built our business models around your needsin relation to catalyst solutions. There are basicallytwo generic business models, the product and projectbusiness models.

    Product business

We offer a specialised product portfolio of catalysts usedin fixed bed processes. These products are proprietary to

Evonik, can be readily supplied and are regularly producedon a commercial scale. However, it is important for you toknow that Evoniks proprietary product and technologyportfolio is broader and can also be accessed via the projectbusiness approach.

    Project business

A project is always required if a product needs to bedeveloped or has not been produced on a commercialscale at Evonik. There are four project categories: tollmanufacturing, custom manufacturing, custom designand joint development. All projects are governed by legalcontracts. A confidentiality agreement protects eachpartys intellectual property rights and allows a free flow

of information. The collaboration contract defines thescope and goals of the project and the commercial condi-tions. By definition, all projects run on an exclusive basis. These contracts are needed to ensure that the projectruns smoothly and that your expectations are met.

In toll manufacturing projects the composition of the catalyst andits manufacturing process as well as the process in which the catalystis applied are well defined and elaborated. Evonik transfers catalystproduction to its site and produces the catalyst to your specification. In custom manufacturing projects a lab recipe of a new catalystexists, but the catalyst has not yet been produced on a commercialscale. Evonik transforms the lab recipe into a procedure that can beapplied in a commercial catalyst plant. Modifications of the recipe

are sometimes necessary to make it work. Once this is achieved,we produce the catalyst according to your specifications. In custom design projects a new catalyst needs to be developedfor an existing commercial application. We develop this catalyst foryou using Evoniks proprietary know-how and catalyst expertise.Typically, we start from an existing Evonik proprietary catalysttechnology which we systematically modify to produce anoptimised catalyst. We leverage our large catalyst libraries and, ifapplicable, our high-throughput preparation and screening equip-ment. Testing and qualification of the catalysts is performed both atyour site and ours. The result of the project is a catalyst tailored toyour application. Once the lab recipe has been elaborated, catalyst

production is scaled up to commercial levels.Joint development projects also require the development of anew catalyst, but in contrast to custom design projects the processin which the catalyst is used may not finally be developed. Thisbusiness model is characterised by the closest possible interaction

between you and Evonik. Joint development projects include allthe components of custom design projects, but are characterisedby a higher degree of freedom in regard to the process where thecatalyst is applied.

    Services

Whichever model you choose, all the products come embedded inservice packages. Trained staff in every region of the world provide

you with the highest levels of technical service. We also providecustom packaging, help you with the safe and correct handling ofour products, and tailor our logistics to your specific needs.

    Our core competencies

In all the business models, we leverage our core competencies. We are creative in finding new solutions and are open to ideas thatare not obvious. We specialise in catalysts and in scaling up andproducing sophisticated catalysts on a commercial scale. A robustand stable production process is crucial to all catalysts, and we knowhow to design this. The best catalyst in the laboratory is of no useif you cannot produce it in commercial quantities. We are reliableand deliver on our promises. Our professional project management

with cross-functional teams makes the project flow smoothly. Andwe are never complacent about our achievements, but strive forconstant self-renewal in our business processes for your benefit.Catalysts are at the very heart of catalytic chemical processes. This iswhy you need a trustworthy partner. This is why you need Evonik.

Thanks to our long history in Continuous Process Catalysts,

we have built up a large portfolio of proprietary catalysts andhave catalysts for many reaction classes. Our catalyst portfoliomay already contain a suitable catalyst for your process. Toidentify this catalyst we can use either classical sampling andtesting or our Parallel Rapid Screening equipment.

Our website carries an interactive search engine, the Catalyst

Guide. This web-based tool can give you a preliminary ideaof the Evonik catalysts suitable for a particular reaction. Italso provides information about reaction conditions, reactionmechanisms, patents and the scientific literature. EvoniksCatalyst Guide is an indispensable tool for anyone workingwith catalytic processes.

When new catalysts are developed incustom design and joint development

projects, scale-up and commercial pro-duction are already being taken intoconsideration in the initial design stage.Wherever applicable, we use our inte-grated automated high-throughputpreparation (HTP) and screening (HTS)equipment in the development process. You benet from the reduction in develop-ment time, which helps cut project costs.Depending on the catalyst system, 4 - 8times as many catalysts can be producedand 8 -16 times more catalytic tests run

    than with classical catalyst laboratoryequipment.

    How you benet

    from catalyst projects

allow you to concentrate on your core business; provide you with a skilled partner for

developing and scaling up new catalysts; give you access to sophisticated catalyst

manufacturing equipment; offer greater exibility in the use of catalyst

types and quantities; and de-bottleneck your own catalyst production.

Our portfolio of custom catalysts is muchbroader than our proprietary portfolio for

which you find examples on pages 14-17.In the custom portfolio not only catalystcomposition is quite different but alsothe types of products that we producefor our customers. We cannot go into toomuch detail here as these custom catalystsoften are exclusive to one customer only. However, just to give you a flavour, wewant to mention some classes of catalyststhat are custom produced:

    Special zeolites

Mixed metal oxide catalystsfor selective oxidation

Superacids Solid base catalysts Supported heteropolyacids Etc.

    Metal Managementand Rening

    Precious metals

Spent catalysts containing precious metals are sentto a metals renery where the precious metal isextracted from the catalyst. The catalyst is destroyedin this process. The metals renery produces solutionsof precious metal salts that are subsequently usedin the production of fresh catalysts. This recyclingminimises precious metal loss.

Evonik takes care of the entire precious metal cycle, from management of the precious metal account tocoordination of rening activities. Evonik has a wellestablished global network of metal reners forrecovery and rening of precious metals. But thisis transparent to the customer, for whom Evonik issimply a convenient one-stop service point for allhis rening needs.

Our web site carries an interactive calculation tool.Taking the entire precious metal cycle and catalystproductivity into account, this web-based tool givesyou a good idea of the value that catalysts from Evonik

    can deliver.

    Base metals

In addition to rening, Evonik takes care of base metalpurchasing and nancing and associated services suchas catalyst regeneration. Aware as we are of the impli-cations of base metal prices on the overall economicalviability of the catalytic process, we can offer tailoredsolutions for integrated metal management and can helpyou select the cost optimisation approach thats right foryou. The current portfolio of technical and commercialservices includes:

purchasing services and nancing models, tailored recipe design for raw material cost optimisation, catalyst regeneration and recycling services, and rening services for spent base metal catalysts.

As in the case of precious metal services, Evonikcollaborates with a worldwide network of raw materialsuppliers and metal rening companies. We are aware of the importance of raw materialsand can coordinate all activities around anappropriate metal management programme. Our services are no longer limited
