6 Crystal Play
The ever-changing world of crystal beads is
my constant inspiration, and this collection of
jewelry designs is the result of playing with some
of the latest products available from Swarovski
Elements. The company releases new colors,
shapes, and finishes twice a year, and as one of
Swarovski’s Create Your Style Ambassadors, I’m
fortunate to get product samples as soon as
they’re available so I can design with them as
inspiration strikes me.
Right after I finished my first book, Crystal
Brilliance, I knew that I’d want to write another
book that showcases crystal jewelry. My first
book features 26 jewelry designs in four design
categories: Classic, Romantic, Geometric, and
Organic. For this book, I decided to shake things
up and have a little more fun.
This book has four project chapters: Beaded
Beads, Component Craze, Playful Favorites,
and Another Dimension. Each has unexpected
twists that give them a fun or even funky spin.
Many of the designs in this book can be used as
accessories for special occasions, but I wear my
jewelry all the time because—when you think
about it—every day is special.
New directioNs
Have you ever discovered a new, extraordinary
crystal component and had no clue how to
incorporate it into your beadwork? (I have too,
every so often.) That’s where the designs in this
book will be helpful: They’ll clue you in to my

design process, and you can stitch up the project
as I did or let it spark new ideas of your own. I
incorporate some new components that you
didn’t see in my first book, such as the pendant
shape in the Woven Crystal Clusters Bracelet.
You’ll notice a few other materials that are
unusual and exciting when paired with crystals:
Czech-made Picasso-finish beads, for example.
I used them to line the Snake-Belly Bangle with
a cool interior that lives up to its name. Playing
with inspiring materials always helps me create
a fabulous finished product.
My desigN process aNd favorite stitches
My favorite beaded designs are usually a result
of taking the time to spread out materials and
try different combinations—basically, make a
mess of my work area, just like I did as a kid in
my backyard. Little details always caught my
attention. It’s no wonder I was drawn
to beadwork.
I enjoy mixing different stitches in my
designs. You’ll find all my favorites used here:
herringbone, St. Petersburg chain, right-angle
weave, and peyote stitch, to name a few. Most of
these stitches are explained within the project
directions. If you are unfamiliar with a stitch or
need a quick lesson on things like adding a stop
bead or zipping up peyote ends, check out the
Basics Review at the end of the book.
“playtiMe” optioNs
Readers loved the bonus of getting an alternate
design idea in my first crystal book, so you’ll
see that feature again in this book. This time it’s
called “Playtime” in the hopes that you’ll stretch
your creative thinking along with me and look at
the main project in a different way.
Beaded Beads 19
Using the same cubic right-angle weave
technique as in the first project, substitute
bugle beads for the sides and fill in the spaces
with crystal crosses. The smaller the bugle
beads, the smaller the overall bead, so you’ll be
able to stitch cute components for all types of
jewelry. Use large bugle beads to showcase large
crystals or patterned sides.
