11 Things Students Should Never Do… On Social Media As social media infiltrates more and more of our everyday life, it becomes more and more impossible to remove ourselves from our online presence. However, many times we overlook the imprint of our social reality to see how it may affect us negatively down the road. We’re here to offer you some helpful tips to keep your social media experience free from flaws! 1. Post Illegal (or Uncouth) Activities Yes, there are times when you want to share every moment of your life with your followers and friends. But before you post that picture of your 6 foot beer bong you did while at Panama City Beach, ask yourself “can this come back to haunt me?” In most cases the answer is yes. Even if you’re 21, posting such pictures announces the lifestyle you engage. Not 21? Then you’re just announcing to future employers how little law, and possibly their rules mean to you. And there are some of you thinking “but my profile is on lockdown. No one can see those pictures of me with that joint from that time in Mexico.” But what’s to stop your friends who can see them from saving them to their device to post themselves? We recommend culling through your online presence, to see just what exists.

 1. Post Illegal (or Uncouth) Activities

Yes, there are times when you want to share every moment of your life with your followers and friends.

 2. Bullying

Cyberbullying is one of the biggest problems students face online today. According to the stopbullying.gov website examples of cyberbullying include: “mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.” Bullying like this strikes anywhere at anytime, and follows the victims around as they are unable to get away from the harassment. If you are a victim of bullying, please visit our list of campus resources.

 3. Trash Your Teachers

Don’t like your ENG101 teacher? That might be the case but your online presence isn’t the place to let that information out. Additionally, exclaiming how happy you are that a professor canceled class, though true, is also not the kind of information to rejoice over if you do not know why the professor canceled class. Furthermore, as the social interaction between professors and students expands, friending and following each other is becoming the norm. Giving professors access to information which may damage the relationship, and having a few close relationships with professors is a way to ensure letters of recommendation in the future.

4. Post / Download Objectionable Content From School Computers or Network.

In addition to the USI policy on computer use there is a bigger issue of copyright policy. Yes, USI gives you access to the whole of the internet, but that doesn’t mean you get free reign. Mass downloads of movies and music are tracked by the University, and they are capable of recognizing who stole every season of Dr. Who on campus.

5. Post Confidential Information

Sure, you’re excited to get your very first class schedule, but stop and think about what information is on your schedule. Even small pieces of information like your birth date or the last four of your social security number can be used for more than you would think. And yeah, you might be really excited about your first debit card, but don’t take a picture and Instagram it.

6. Overly Specific Location CheckIns

While it may seem handy to check into a place and tag everyone you know there, the reality is you’re walking into a tricky situation. The more specific you are with a checkin, the easier it is to find trouble, in three ways: 1) A predator or stalker knows where you are and is more capable of finding you, 2) Those who have access to your page have the ability to track your movement, thereby making it easier to steal your belongings from a car, or your home, 3) you check in somewhere when you should be someplace else (See number 7).

7. Lie/Cheat/Plagiarize

Did you convince your professor you were sick and couldn’t attend class the day a paper was due, only to use that time to party with your friends during an impromptu field trip to Nashville? Did you check in at every landmark and track your experience with your fully public Instagram page? Tweet about how cool the Parthenon was? Did you come back to class Monday morning with your professor asking fifty questions? Activities like these might seem meek as an undergrad, but when you enter the professional realm, things like this could cost you a scholarship, an internship, a job.

8. Threaten Violence

There is no time when threatening a single person, or a group of people will ever be acceptable. Even if you’re just posting with emotion (see below), we live in a day and age where no threat can or will go unnoticed. If you feel the need to talk to someone, social media is not the place to start a conversation. See our campus resources for someone to talk to.

9. Unprofessional Public Profiles

We live in a time when if someone wants to get to know the real you, the quickest way is to view your online activity and presence. We tend to be more comfortable and free with our personalities as we interact online. And it is easy to forget the power of Google and its ability to find things from even the deepest recesses of the internet. If it is out there, and your name is attached, Google can find it. Because of this, it is now common practice to search a name before deciding on hiring the personnel.

10. Never Rely on Privacy Settings 100%

You may think that your profile is available to your friends only, but websites are ever evolving their security settings, and sometimes things slide through. If you’re posting things you don’t want the world to see, best not post it at all.

11. Post Emotionally

There’s a reason why the phrase “in the heat of the moment” exists. However when using social media it’s better to count to ten than to let that phrase overcome you. This extends further than calling out your roommate online for drinking the last of your milk. Engaging in online arguments can stir up high emotions, causing us to say things we don’t mean including hollow threats, which we’ve already discussed.
