The Parakai Springs hot pools complex isto get a face lift costing up to $150,000 alongwith new features such as saunas.
General Manager Gary Dunn andOperations Manager Dion Tilson say the newprojects follow on from other recent upgradework, including new lockers for the indoorpool, and $45,000 spent on quality new toiletsand showers in the changing rooms.
“Doing the new toilets and showers wasthe best thing we ever did,” says Gary.
First on the agenda are two infrared,Canadian hemlock timber saunas, which arein the process of being set up beside theexisting spa pools, adjacent to ParakaiSprings' private pool area. The two-personsaunas are expected to be open in time forChristmas at the latest, at a cost of up to$20,000. They are currently waiting onfinishing touches and landscaping withbamboo and clivias.
A new toilet block will be built nearby, meaning users of the private pool area(recently used for filming 'pick-up' shots for
outdoor pool and hydroslide open to thegeneral public as at present, and the indoorpool, spas, sauna and private areadeveloped into a more upmarket, privatehealth spa scenario.
If that happens, says Gary, it will be “welldown the track”. But he says with the currentredevelopment work and future plans, “for thefirst time in many years we can see a path tothe future.”
Meanwhile, Gary is keen to remind localsof the various community initiatives at thepools.

the upcoming movie 'Mr Pip'), spas andsaunas will be completely self-contained.
“We're not hurrying it, we want to get itright,” explains Gary. He says the saunas willprobably be available for use on their own, orin combination with the spa pools.
M o r e m a j o r i s a t o t a lredevelopment of the front entranceto the pool complex, with workexpected to start in February orMarch next year after the summerrush, taking about eight weeks tocomplete.
The present “dark little entry”will be replaced with a tall, glassedin entryway with double automaticsliding doors beneath a protrudingcanopy, and cashiers desks oneither side inside. Designed byarchitectural designer KeithYoungman, the project will also seea revamp and extension of thepools' office area.
The entry has been designed insuch a way that it can be divideddown the middle. That fits in with apossible future development whichwould see the pools complexeffectively split in two, with the large

Homebased Education & Care
Well, I was wrong.Last month, I said the extended Helensville Community & Heritage Day could give the
town’s other major events a run for their money in terms of the participation of locals.Certainly, parts of the daytime events were well attended. Around the middle of the day
there were good-sized crowds browsing the numerous market stalls in Commercial Roadand watching the addressing of the haggis, kapa haka and other activities. Reasonablenumbers turned up at the museum through the day, but reports are it was very quiet down atthe railway station.
There’s an article and photos on page 12.The big disappointment was the afternoon and evening, with free live music and live
screenings of two Rugby World Cup quarter final matches behind the hall. At its best, therewouldn’t have been more than 200 people there - and a third of those were volunteers andpolice. Most people left after the first match, so things were very quiet later on.
That’s a far cry from the thousands that turn up each year at theA&P Show and ChristmasParade. Those that were there had a great time, but it’s a shame more didn’t make the effortto tag along to Helensville’s own version of a ‘fan zone’. Especially for free.
Why the poor turnout? It wasn’t just us - Auckland Council’s Senior Events FacilitatorNorth/West, Hellen Hyndman, reports that “all festival sites regionally were very low inattendance.”
Some of the blame must surely lie with the IRB and government, who pretty effectivelytied our hands when it came to publicising the event - despite being the ones to call oncommunities to organise World Cup-related events in the first place! I’m also sure theprevalence of large-screen televisions in Kiwi homes had a part to play, with many notwanting to sit out in the cold when they can watch in comfort at home.
A fair bit of work by a small band of locals - plus a lot of resources from Auckland Council -went into putting on our own ‘fan zone’; it’s a pity more locals didn’t take part.

Stepping into The Parlour at 81Commercial Road, with its chandelier-litbroad pastel-striped walls, pink velvetlounge suite and petite coffee table is a bitlike walking into someone's living room.
And that's the idea, says owner MatthewMcGerty, who has partly called on his Irishancestry to recreate the feeling of the frontroom – or 'parlour' - in an Irish home whereguests gather to be greeted with warmhospitality and hot beverages.
This is teamed with their experience in“minimalist city style and food”, beautifullypresented in the front window to temptpassersby.
Located in one of Helensville's oldestretail buildings, theinviting look andfeel complementsthe heritage andstyle of that end oftown and adjacentshops like Tilly andLace.
“We wanted TheParlour to be in oneof the town's older, heritage buildings,”says Matt.
Matt and wifeCherie opened TheParlour about sixweeks ago, andsince then havebeen impressinglocals wi th thedelicacies on offer –cakes and treats, filled baguettes, freshsalads, home-made gourmet pies with 'hightea' in the lounge – along with greatespresso coffee brewed by Caffé L'affareand poured by trained baristas.
They offered that coffee for free onopening day and several hundred peopleturned up.
“It was a great opportunity for people tomeet us and try our take on food,” says Matt.“We're doing something very different towhat people have become used to in town.”
Many locals may know Matt and Cheriefrom the Macnuts Café at South Head, whichthey have run for more than a year.

Around 70 Helensville andwest Rodney business peoplelistened to Auckland MayorLen Brown describe his visionfor Auckland at a lunch inHelensville recently.
Rodney councillor PennyWebster and members of theKumeu Local Board thenjoined Mr Brown on stage toanswer questions relating tolocal issues.
Discussing transport, MrBrown said he supported theresumption of passenger rail toHelensville.
“I ’ l l be looking at aHelensville rail link. I want it upand running again,” he said.
He also mentioned the possibility of apassenger ferry service to Hobsonville and abusway to the northwest, although hepointed out that was constrained by themotorway.
One contentious issue raised was thestate of Helensville’s sewerage system, which is at capacity and holding backdevelopment in the area.
Councillor Webster said the issue was“at the front of my mind” and she was waitingon reports outlining the timeframe for thesystem’s upgrade, which she expectedwould be two to five years at most.
“I will be following up on this,” sheassured the gathering. “It’s a seriousconcern.”
Mayor Brown agreed, saying he wouldbe meeting with the CEO of Watercare forurgent feedback.
The event was hosted by AucklandTo u r i s m , E v e n t s a n d E c o n o m i cDevelopment and held at the Christian LifeCentre in Commercial Road.
“The lunch was a great opportunity tohear local views and to see firsthand thesuccesses, issues and concerns of localbusinesses,” says Mayor Brown.
“West Rodney businesses play animportant role in the region, and there is agreat product here. It was important to us tospeak directly to as many companies aspossible at this forum.”

There are no foxes in New Zealand norhares in the Waitemata district so, unlike themore traditional fox hunt, an artificial dragscent is laid during the hunt to give the thrill ofa chase with hounds often in full cry. There isno kill at the end of the hunt.
To celebrate local farmers' generosity, the club puts on a special ‘Farmers' Night’each year. This year's includes a dinnerextravaganza at Alison and Lars Fellman-Hamilton's property in South Head onNovember 13.
It’s also a chance for farmers in thedistrict to get together and socialise in a largegroup.
People who have not tried hunting areencouraged to join in the club’s summeractivities.
They can pay a capping fee for their firstfew hunts or apply to be a member. Ridersnot wanting to follow the hounds over fencescan ride at a more leisurely pace using gatesto follow the hunt.

From the rugged west coast beaches, through Waimauku, Parakai and SouthHead, over to Kaukapakapa and Waitoki, asI travel the area I am continually stunned bythe spectacular landscapes as well as thewarmth of the people.
In this part of the country, we understandour reliance upon the natural environmentfor our wellbeing and our livelihoods. Butthese vital ecosystems which underpineverything that we do are constantly underthreat by actions that we collectively orindividually take.
Sometimes, what is called “progress”may actually be short term gain for long termpain. The kind of pain that is being felt inTauranga right now.

Karate locals learn in Oz
Helensville karate instructor Tim Herlihy along with clubmember Fleur Hindt and New Zealand chief instructor KevinPlaisted trained in Taree, Australia recently with Okinawankarate master, Soke Takayoshi Nagamine 10th dan.
They were invited by Sensei John Carlyle ofMatsubayashi Ryu Australia, which was hosting masterNagamine. The training sessions, including private lessonswith the master, was an invaluable experience says Tim.
“Normally it would cost us thousands of dollars to travelto Japan for this type of training, so having the opportunity tojump across the ditch was appreciated and cost effective."

Kaukapakapa residents will be able to attend a free composting course onSaturday, December 3.
At the three-hour ‘Create Your Own Eden’ course, facilitated by KaipatikiProject on behalf of Auckland Council, they will learn how to turn food andgarden waste into fertiliser or soil conditioner by using one of three methods -conventional composting bins, bokashi fermentation and worm farms.
The course includes learning how to make compost, what to put in andwhat not to, and compost trouble shooting.
After completing the course participants qualify for one $23 subsidy perhousehold on any composting system purchased through the KaipatikiProject.
Attendance is restricted to two participants per household and bookings forthe course are essential.
The course is one of 100 being held around Auckland in 2011 and 2012,aimed at gettingAucklanders to put their food and garden waste to work ratherthan sending it to landfills.
Auckland Council Waste Minimisation Advisor SueMartin says about 50 percent of what Auckland householdsput out for rubbish collection could be recycled viacomposting bins, bokashi fermentation and/or worm farms.

Lemons, lemons, lemonsI don't know about your trees but our citrus have been fantastic this year. Judging by the
number of people who kindly drop their excess crop into the restaurant, there is anabundance of lemons in the district.
Before the best of them have gone, save some as cordial. This easy and ‘old school’preparation is both healthier than shop-bought cordial and less expensive.
I make it for the staff and myself at the restaurant from lemons donated by a staff member;we have made a few batches now andfeel we have it about right. We allenjoy the ginger after-taste, but itworks perfectly well without anyginger at all.
The original recipe came fromfarming family, a good starting pointbut I use about 40 percent less sugarthan that recipe calls for. The citricand tartaric acid are added toincrease the tartness without makingit bitter and also act as preservativesto extend the shelf life of the cordial. These products are available in thesupermarket - they are not expensiveand a little goes a long way.
I store the cordial in a couple of cleaned wine bottles with screw tops. If you store thecordial in a dark green bottle it will last longer and will sit happily in the back of the pantryunopened for many months. Once open consume it within a week unless you are storing theopened bottle in the fridge, in which case it seems to last a long time.
I intend to try a rhubarb cordial in the summer I'm told it's delicious with a dash of vodkaand soda, I'll let you know.
You will need about eight ripe lemons picked from the tree. These tend to be full of juice asopposed to the average shop-bought lemon.
250ml lemon juiceSkins of 4 lemons600g sugar, raw or white.40g thumb of fresh ginger, roughly chopped (optional)2 litres of water½ teaspoon citric acid½ teaspoon tartaric acid
Place everything together in a pot and set to boil, turn down to a gentle simmer and allowto reduce to about 1 ½ litres. This will take about an hour.
Thoroughly wash a couple of wine bottles, fill them with boiling water and allow to standfor a couple of minutes to ensure they are sterile. Put the wine caps in a cup and also coverthese with boiling water. Drain, and while still hot strain the cordial into the bottles, fit the capand allow to cool.
To use the cordial simply pour a measure into a glass and top with cold water, soda orlemonade.
