THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ERIC MANGINIEric Mangini is in his fi rst year as head coach for the Browns. For Mangini, it marked a return to his NFL roots, having kicked off his tenure in the league as a ball boy and an intern in the Browns’ public relations department in 1994. His tireless work ethic was just as evident in that fi rst year as it is today, a quality that led then-head coach Bill Belichick to add Mangini to the team’s coaching staff in 1995. In his 14 years of NFL coaching

experience, Mangini has been a part of six teams that qualifi ed for the playoffs, including fi ve that captured division crowns and three that came away with the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions. Prior to be-ing hired by the Browns, Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets (2006-08). In 2006, Mangini took over a team that had gone 4-12 the previous year and guided them to a record of 10-6 and a Wild Card playoff berth. The Jets started with a 5-5 mark before compiling victories in fi ve of their last six contests, including their fi nal three. Prior to joining the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-05). His fi rst fi ve seasons were spent as defensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2005. In Mangini’s fi ve seasons in charge of the team’s secondary, the unit earned fi ve Pro Bowl selections and evolved into one of the NFL’s most successful defen-sive backfi elds. Mangini’s fi rst coaching opportunity came in 1995 as an assistant on the Browns’ staff. Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. Mangini was an assistant coach with the Jets under head coach Bill Parcells from 1997-99.

CINCINNATI BENGALS - MARVIN LEWISMarvin Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on January 14, 2003. Lewis is in his seventh season as Bengals head coach, one year from tying Paul Brown and Sam Wyche for the franchise’s longest tenure of eight seasons. He also ranks third in Bengals head coaching victo-ries behind Wyche and Brown. Lewis’ Bengals log includes an AFC North Division champion-ship in 2005, and he coached his fi rst fi ve years

(2003-07) without experiencing a losing season, the club’s longest such streak since a six-year span from 1972-77. The club slipped to a 7-9 mark in 2007, to 4-11-1 last year. In 2002, the season before he joined the Ben-gals, Lewis led the Washington Redskins to a number fi ve defensive rank-ing, serving as assistant head coach as well as defensive coordinator. He came to the Redskins after six seasons (1996-2001) as defensive coor-dinator with the Baltimore Ravens, a tenure that included a Super Bowl victory in 2000. Lewis had his fi rst NFL assignment from 1992-95, as linebackers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lewis spent 11 years coach-ing in college, beginning as linebackers coach at his alma mater, Idaho State, from 1981-84.

WR Mohamed Massaquoi...With a 100-yard receiving game against the Bengals, he would become the fi rst Browns player to record back-to-back 100-yard receiving games since Braylon Edwards recorded 110 receiving yards at Cincinnati on Sep-tember 17, 2006 and turned in 116 yards against Baltimore the following week on September 24.... With one more 100-yard output he would become the fi rst Browns rookie to have three or more such games in a season since Derrick Alexander had three in 1994.

QB Brady Quinn…With a 300-yard passing perfromance against Cincinnati, he would come the fi rst Browns quarterback to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back games since Brian Sipe passed for 327 yards at San Diego (9/25/83) and followed with 310 yards against Seattle (10/2/83).

We got up big, they came back, we fought back, and then to have it come down to the fi nal play with a pass interference, [I feel] sick for them. We had plenty of opportunities, and at the end we just couldn’t close it out. I’m disappointed for them and just sick about the outcome.”

(On Brady Quinn’s play at Detroit)- “I thought that he played well throughout the course of the game. I think that if he hits that pass, we win the game. He had gotten us the third down prior to that. I felt good about how he’d been throwing the ball throughout the whole game. I felt good about how the offense had been playing throughout the whole game. That’s really what I thought about him.”

(On if the loss at Detroit hurts more than others)- “It’s just really disappointing for me, for that group of guys. The way they worked, the way they fought, some of the opportunities that we had. It hurts me for them more than function of me or the coaching staff. I’m just disappointed for them.”

(On what his long term process is and how the players he has ac-quired since becoming head coach play into that process)- “I think the short term process is getting ready for each week and playing each game. That’s one element to it and that’s the most important element right now. The long term process is understanding how you’re going to prepare for a game, understanding how you have to practice to get ready for games, understanding the concepts that you run offensively and defensively, so a year from now these aren’t new things in rela-tionship to the defense that you’re facing or the offense that you’re facing. There’s some reps built up in that, like we were talking about with the Ravens’ defense. It’s the young players that are here, under-standing what it means to be a pro. A lot of these guys typically would be getting ready for bowl games now. It’s different. There’s a lot of football left. There are no teams on the schedule that you schedule to, you know how it works in college football, it’s not like that. Ev-ery week you’re going to face somebody that’s talented. Often times for the young guys, someone that’s older than themselves. That’s a process. Look at Alex Mack, he’s played quite a bit of football and I think he’s gotten little bit better each week. Kaluka, (Maiava) I thought, did a really nice job this week in a signifi cant, signifi cant role and working with a guy who wasn’t playing inside. [You] fi gure both of those guys, neither one of them, Kaluka hadn’t had that type of play time and David (Bowens) obviously hadn’t had that play time inside and hadn’t been the play caller. With Mohamed (Massaquoi) and (Brian) Robiskie and (David) Veikune and those guys, they’re all learning as you go. Next year they’re going to be at a higher starting point. Working with the game plan, all those different elements come into play that as you put reps together, as you put time in together, as you put experiences in together, you get to start at a higher level the following season.”

(On how he keeps the player’s confi dence at a high level)- “When you go through the tape, you identify the areas where there have been problems. I have been involved in this in different areas. One year it could be sacks, how many sacks you’re getting, another year it could be picks, another year it could be forced fumbles, whatever the area is. You have to go through the process of how do you generate more of those, how do you generate, obviously for us, more points. You look at the missed opportunities, whether it be turnovers, dropped ball, the

self-infl icted wounds. It has to start there. It’s really got to start there. Then you’re giving yourself the best opportunity to score those points, when you’re taking away extra drives, when you’re taking away third down conversions and the amount of plays in a game decrease, the odds of you being very productive decrease as well.”

(On what he says to fans who think this team is headed in the wrong direction)- “I’d say that, just like they’re frustrated, we’re frustrated as a coaching staff and as players. We take responsibility for improving it. That’s something that we continue to work at. It’s not something that anybody is happy about or satisfi ed about. We’re going to continue to fi x it and improve. That’s a commitment. I don’t think that anything that’s worthwhile happens easily or quickly; it takes time. I’ve said that before. I’ve been a part of this before. It’s not easy. It’s not always without frustration or diffi culties, but you have to commit to improving and that’s something that I can tell you we’re fi rmly committed to.”

(On if his belief in the team being able to win has changed)- “I’m not sure what your belief was, but I believe in it every week. I believe in this group of guys and I believe in the coaching staff and I believe in the things that we’re doing. That belief won’t change. What’s im-portant is [to] be able to show where things can change, because if you take the approach that they can’t change, then you’re lost at that point and that’s not the case. Things are correctable and the belief system has not faltered.”

(On what they can do to make the offense more effective)- “I really believe there are a lot of things that we can do to make the offense more effective. I think the starting point for us is protecting the foot-ball. The amount of opportunities is always going to be limited by the times we have the football. We’re giving it away too often. It’s not purely in the form of interceptions, it’s ball security. We need to do a better job as a show team constantly pressuring the ball, almost to the point where it’s overkill, because that’s the amount of emphasis that you have to put on it. Whenever the running back is fi nishing the run, you want to have two, three guys tearing it away to keep giving that awareness to the running back, to the receiver. Every play getting those guys pressuring the football, because the better we protect it, the more chance we’ll have to score, the more chance we’ll have to sus-tain drives and that, to me, is the starting point. Then, it’s being able to take advantage of the opportunities that are there, whether it’s throws or catches, being able to execute those. That’s the second thing. I think from a scheme perspective, there’s a range of things in the dif-ferent areas, fi rst and second down, third down, red zone, that we have looked at that we’ll incorporate moving into the second half.”

(On what he is trying to achieve with the Browns)- “It’s a pro-cess of building the organization for the long term and getting better in each phase organizationally for the long term, whether it’s coach-ing, whether it’s player acquisition, whether it’s salary cap, whether it’s operations, video. There are all different components that go to building a successful organization. Those are all things that you keep working at, the composition of the team, all those things. Doing it in New York, you keep working and improving and evaluating. It takes time and you have to be consistent with it. You have to work at it every day. As you do, you continually get better. I saw it in New Eng-land as well. You work at it, you work at it, you work at it and you’re consistent with it and committed to it and good things happen.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTESWR Josh Cribbs(On how disappointing the loss at Detroit was)- “Words can’t explain it. I just can imagine how hurt out fans must be. I’d just like to apologize, as a leader on the football team, to all our fans out there that’s counting on us every week, die-hard fans, win or lose they’re with us every week. I just want to let them know that we’re working hard in prac-tice. We’ve given it all we have in practice to win football games. We’re going to still give all effort to win football games.”

(On if it seems like the team will never get a break)- “It does seem like we’ll never get a break. It does seem like that, but nonetheless we have to act accordingly as profes-sional athletes. After tomorrow we have to let this loss go. It’s going to hurt. It’s going to linger a little bit, but we have to get ready for our next opponent.”

WR Mohamed Massaquoi(On the loss at Detroit)- “It’s tough. You prepare all week in practice. You go out there and you make plays. Some-times it’s just not enough and today was one of those situa-tions.”

QB Brady Quinn(On the passing game at Detroit game)- “I think going into every week obviously we’re going to try to do what we think we can accomplish and execute out there on the fi eld. We knew they load the box sometimes… shots downfi eld might work and we were able to be pretty effective with it.”

(On the defensive play at Detroit)- “You always have faith in your defense. Our guys have done a great job all year for us. They’ve been lifting us on offense and we have all the faith in the world in them.”

(On why the offense was effective at Detroit)- “Tony (Grossi), as we talk about week-to-week, we have different game plans every week. We felt like we could utilize some more things downfi eld against this team and we went out there and executed it.”

(On his chemistry with Mohamed Massaquoi)- “We tried to get him the ball. He’s a great player for us. He was able to utilize some stuff downfi eld. The chemistry between me and Mohamed has defi nitely progressed and gotten better as we’ve been able to play more together.”

(On how the team is staying positive)- “We look at things different. We’re putting in different things, doing different things out there. We’re seeing improvement in some ways. We always have the hope and that faith that next week we can continue to get better, continue to develop and improve.”

DL Shaun Rogers(On if it is tough to lose)- “It’s always tough to lose. If you lose at Tiddlywinks it’s tough if you are a true competitor. It’s just something that you have to live with. You have to look yourself in the mirror and try to see if you have done what you needed to do and put a positive spin on it from that direction. It is what it is.”

DL Robaire Smith(On how frusturating the season has been)- “It’s frustur-ating, but at the same time, you just have to keep fi ghting. This is our job. This is what we’re here for. We just have to try to fi nd a way, period. There is no way around it. There is nothinge else we can do. We have to go in there and fi nd a way.”

OL Eric Steinbach(On if he thinks the team can rise above the adversity they have faced)- “Of course. If you look at every guy in this locker room, coaches, playerc, we’re all in it together. We put a lot of hard work in during the week. We go in con-fi dent each week, but we’re coming out empty at some point in the game. Again, if you add up the trunvoers this year, that’s not helping us as an offense. I think the defense came out and played aggresive, played good. I think they kept big plays, obviously, to a minimum on that side. As an offense, we just have to come out and do our part.”

(On what keeps the team going)- “Just being profession-als and playing at this level. You’re never going to cave in. There might be some teams out there that do it on this level, but I’m not worried about anyone on this team.”

(On if the team’s struggles are a part of the growing pro-cess)- “It is part of the process, but also, you don’t want to have it last too long. We are frusturated, but we will just go back to the drawing board this week and fi nd the rhythm,, fi nd the consistency. We’ll be okay.”

DB Eric Wright(On how the team keeps a positive attitude)- “I think ev-ery week you’re climbing uphill, whether you’re winning or you’re losing. You’re trying to move in a positive direction and try to continue to progress as a team. In that sense, it’s still the same. You get into the classroom and get the fi lm-work done, then you go out to practice and try to continue to improve. For us, we just want to handle our responsibilities and do as much as we can to put ourselves in the best posi-tion to win a game.”

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT ERIC MANGINIDefensive Coordinator Rob Ryan(On if he talks to Eric Mangini about the negative press)- “The one thing is, with Eric as our head coach, he’s used to winning every week. His preparation makes us win. He does a phenomenal job. Right now, if we listened to all you guys, and you guys do a great job of handling, obviously, the media and all the things you do and right now your job’s tough too. The bottom line is we’re going to be a great team. We work hard. We have players working hard. Eventually this hard work comes through. All you can do is go back on facts and the history that we’ve been through, me and Eric. We didn’t win a Super Bowl the fi rst year we were in New England, we struggled, but we got better each week. By the end of it, we had a lot of Super Bowl rings and that’s where we want to be with this team. It doesn’t happen overnight. ‘Hey, I want to be a Super Bowl champ again.’ Well, it’s not going to happen unless you work your tail off and you have everybody around you, not just one person, working their tail off. If it was up to hard work we’d be a 3-0 because Eric works harder probably than any head coach in football so, heck, we’d be undefeated, but it’s more than one man. This job is a team. It always is a team sport. It’s always about everyone in the building and we’re fi ghting. We’re working and eventually the work’s going to pay off.”

(On how the team perceives Mangini)- “To be honest with you, and I know it’s probably a national story about whatever you talked about, something about people, the way they perceive Eric, that’s not the case at all. I can’t really handle that question because I don’t really know what you’re talking about. I know our guys love Eric. They’re working hard for him. We’re going to be alright. It’s just, right now, everybody’s going to take a shot at the leader. He’s out in front, they’re knocking him down. We have a lot of fi ghters here. Eric’s a great fi ghter. All we’re doing is working our hardest. We’re meeting together tirelessly to make sure we’re getting ev-erything done correctly and just give us the best chance to win. If you fault Eric for anything it’s because he’s working so darn hard. We’re all working so darn hard because we want what everybody wants, and what you guys want, is to win.”

Hall of Fame RB Jim Brown(On his impression of Eric Mangini)- “My early impression is the coach has a plan. The football team will be smart and solid. I see a man that runs the show. I like the order I see. Obviously, it’s a contrast. You have one boss. You know who he is. He knows what he’s doing. He’s emphasizing intelligence and understanding more than just a job. It’s what we did with the ‘64 team. When you understand the concept of team, then you get certain results.”

RB Jamal Lewis (On Eric Mangini’s scheme)- “The [scheme] has worked. It’s been successful, just like every other scheme in this league. It’s a copycat league. I think it is a good scheme, and it does work. We just have to go out and execute at every position, offensively, defensively.”

OL Joe Thomas(On the message that Coach Mangini is trying to send to the team)- “That’s been the message since he got here. ‘You’re going to do things the way you’re supposed to do it and told to do it. And if you’re not, then we’ll fi nd somebody else. This is a busi-ness and the business is winning. And the man in charge is going to decide if you’re helping us win. If you’re not, you’re going to be gone.’’

DL Shaun Rogers (On if it will be hard for the team to grasp Eric Mangini’s philosophies without wins)- “No, I don’t think so. I think even though it’s a little hard to grasp, I think people are kind of under-standing the points behind it and the necessity in having some type of discipline and some type of leadership. I think it’ll turn out. Wins will defi nitely help cover some of the rough edges but I think guys are going to understand and buy in.”

Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels(On Eric Mangini)- “I know that Eric’s very talented, extremely smart, very bright. He has great ideas. [He is] a very diffi cult coach to prepare against. I’ve had the opportunity to do it now for a number of years when he was in New York. It is a very diffi cult preparation. He’s going to test you in every way, shape or form possible. You know his team’s going to be very well coached and the way they play on Sunday is going to test your preparation and all the things that you did to get ready.”

Vikings QB Brett Favre(On why Eric Mangini will be a successful coach in the NFL)- “I think he’s good. People can say what they want about person-alities and player’s coach or having fun or being rigid or whatever. Who’s to say one’s better than the other? His coaching style was different than what I was accustomed to, but just my experiences in being around, I knew it would work. I knew it could work. Yes, it was different, but like I said, it comes down to the play-ers buying in to what the coach is doing. Ultimately, the player has to play. Regardless of scheme and all that stuff, you have to catch, you have to block, you have to throw, you have to read, you have to do all those things. He’s extremely sharp and leaves no stone unturned. He kind of keeps his stamp on things. He wants to make sure that guys know everything that’s going on. His phi-losophy, as every coach should be, it’s a team. Why does Brett Favre have to know what the goals are on special teams? Not that I’m going to play special teams, but he wants to breed this con-cept of ‘we’re all in it together.’ I think that’s a good thing, I really do, because it’s not the most talented teams that always win. It’s the teams that play the best together, as one. I really believe that’s his ultimate goal. It’s not so much the most talented guys, it’s the guys that believe in what’s going on and do it together that will be successful and I totally agree with that.”
