I Have A Plan Iowa®
IowacodespecifiesthatallIowastudentsmustcreatestudentcurriculumplans.Studentsbeginworkontheirplansduring8thgradeandcontinuetobuilduponthemthroughouthighschoolbycompletingidentifiedstatecomponentsspecifictoeachgradelevel.AsIowa’sdesignatedcareerinformationanddecision-makingsystem,IHaveAPlanIowa®incorporatesthestatecomponentsintograde-specificguidewaystohelpschoolsmeettherequirementsofthestudentcurriculumplan.The guideways:• Provideaneasystep-by-stepprocessforstudentstocompletetherequiredcomponents.• AllowtheIowaDepartmentofEducationtoreceivetherequireddatareportsautomatically.

Thefirststepistocreateaprofessionalaccount.Youwillneedanaccounttoviewthestepsoftheguidewayandtomonitorstudents’progress.Tocreateanaccount,gotohttp://procenter.ihaveaplaniowa.govandclickonCreateaProfessionalCenterAccount.YouwillneedaProfessionalAccountAccessKeyorAdministratorCode.Ifyoudonothavethecodeforyourschool,pleasecallXapCorporationtechsupportat800-281-1168.

Using the 10th Grade Guideway
Toaccesstheguideways,signintoanaccountandselecttheIowa Guideways link from the landingpage.
PLEASE NOTE: Your students MUST completetherequiredcomponentsintheGuidewayin orderfortheirworktoberecordedfortheIowaDepartmentofEducationreport.
Iowa 10th Grade Guideway
Thisguidewaywillwalkyouthroughpartsofthesystemthatarerecommendedfor10thgradestudents.Guidewaysareself-directedandprovideguidanceforstudentsbysuggestingthenextstepsfortheircareerprocess.Thecomponentsofthegrade-specificguidewaysinIHAPIwereidentifiedbytheIowaDepartmentofEducation.
Thereisalotherebutitdoesn’tneedtobedoneallatonce.Studentscanstopbetweenstepsandpickuplaterwheretheyleftoff.
HINT: Onthewaythrougheachstep,followtheinstructionsintheguidewaypanelatthetopofthepage.
The 10th Grade Guideway helps students: • Discoverworkvaluesandexplorerelatedcareers.• Compareandconnectcareerstocollegeprograms.• Startexploringcolleges.• Reviewandupdatetheirplanofstudy.• Reflectontheircareeroptionsanddecisions.

Step 1 – Work Values SorterInthisstep,studentswillcompletetheWorkValuesSorter.Identifyingtheirworkvalues-thecharacteristicsofajobandworkenvironmentthatareimportanttothem-helpsstudentsexplorecareersthatmightleadtogreaterjobsatisfaction.
NOTE: Allow students 5-15 minutes to complete the assessment.
Tobegin,clicktheGet Started button.
Theworkvaluesorteruseselectronicvalue“cards”withworksituations.Studentsshoulddraganddropeachcardintoanemptysquarebasedonhowimportantthesituationistothem.Cardsmaybemovedaroundevenafterbeingplacedinabox.
Hint: Remind students if something more valuablecomesuptheycanrearrangethecardsintoadifferentrankingorder.

Optional Educational Enhancement Activity
Studentswill“namethatworkvalue!”Dividestudentsintogroupsandhaveeachgroupresearchtheirassignedworkvalue.Thegroupwillthenbequestionedbytherestoftheclasstodeterminewhichworkvaluetheyresearched.
Hint: Toprogressinanyguideway,clickthe Continue link at the top of the page.IftheContinuebuttonisnotpresent,thestepisnotcomplete.
Results:Oncestudentscompletetheworkvaluessorter,theycanviewcareersthatmeetthosevalues,seetheirranking,andreflectontheirresults.Encouragestudentstoexploretheirlistofcareersandlearnmoreabouttheiroptions.
Step 2 – Compare Careers
Agoodwaytolearnmoreaboutcareersistocomparethemside-by-sidetoseethesimilaritiesandthedifferences.Inthisstepstudents will use the Compare Careers moduletolookattwocareerprofiles.Students should evaluate how the similaritiesanddifferenceswouldbereflectedintheworkplaceiftheyweretobeemployedinthiscareer.
HINT: Iftherearecareerssavedintheportfolio,theyaredisplayedintheYour Compare List.Ifthelistisempty,usethesearchboxtobuildalistofcareersforcomparison.

Fromthecomparelist,studentsselecttwocareerstocompare.Checktheboxnexttothecareertitleandclickthe Comparebutton.
Note:Studentscansearchforasmanycareersastheywouldlikeandaddthemtothecomparelist.
Studentsshouldbeencouragedtocomparemultiplepairsofcareers.
Results:Studentscanseetheirchosencareersside-by-sideandcompareandcontrast.Thiscanhelpthemdetermineifthecareerisagoodfitforthemandlearnmoreabouttherelationshipbetweencareers.

Studentswillcomparecareersintheirsavedlisttofindwhichonesarethemostsimilarandwhicharethemostdifferent.

Studentsshouldselectacareerfromtheirsavedlistandidentifyhowmanyprogramsandmajorscouldleadtothatorasimilarcareer.Afterwards,havestudentschoosetheirtopfiveprogramsandmajors.
Step 3 – Explore Programs/MajorsConsideringprogramsandtheircharacteristicscanbeahelpfulfirststepinmakingpostsecondaryeducationplans.Thisstepallowsstudentstoexploreprogramsandmajorsinwhichtheymaybeinterestedsotheyarefamiliarwiththeiroptions.
Studentscansearchthreeways:byusingthesearchbox,thealphakeypadorthelistofcareerclusters.
NOTE: Students do not have to know what college they want to attend. This step will also help identify postsecondary institutions that offer the programs.
Hint:ProgramsandmajorsareorganizedintoCareerClustersjustlikecareers.TheprogramsandmajorsinaCareerClusterrepresentthetrainingoptionsforthecareersinthecluster.ItmaybehelpfulforstudentstobrowseprogramsandmajorsbasedonthecareerclustersuggestedtothembytheCareerClusterSurvey,oronechosenbythemwhencreatingtheirPlanofStudy.
Results: Aftersearching,studentswillget“JusttheFacts”pagewithadescriptionoftheprogram.Encouragestudentstosaveprogramsandmajorsthatinterestthemintotheirportfolio.

Step 4 - Get Ready for College ArticleTherearealotofthingstoconsiderforstudentswhoarethinkingaboutgoingtocollegeafterhighschoolgraduation.Thisstepissimplyinformativereading.Thestudentswillreadanarticleaboutthewhy,whenandhowofcollegeandthecollegeadmissionprocess.
RESULT: You may wish to assign a journal entry or someotherassignmentsostudentsareencouragedtoreflectonwhattheyhavereadorputtheirnewknowledgeintoaction.
Step 5 - Compare Schools Therearealargenumberoffactorstoconsiderwhenchoosingacollege.ThisstepallowsstudentstoreviewandcompareschoolsinIowaornationwide.
Haveyourstudentsnotethesimilaritiesanddifferencesinthekeycharacteristics,suchaslocationandon-campushousing.
HINT:Eachcolumncanbesortedusingthearrowsinthegreenheaders.
Studentscanclickaschoolnametoviewallthedetailsontheschoolprofile.

GetReadyForCollegeArticleScavengerHunt-Whilestudentsarereadingthearticle,havethemidentifytheanswerstothefollowingquestions:1.Whatistheaverageearningofthosewithoutahighschooldiploma?2.Whatistheaverageearningofthosewithabachelor’sdegree?3.HowmanyyearsofstudydomostcollegesrequireinEnglish?4.WhatisthenameofthestandardizedtestthatcollegesinIowarequire?5.Whichofficeatcollegesshouldyousendyourapplication?

Afterthisstep,studentsshoulddeterminewhichschoolsontheirlisthavethehighesttuitioncostsandwhichhavethelowest.

Theschoolprofilepagecontainsinformationabouttheschool.Studentsshouldusethetabsontheleftsideofthepagetojumptoadditionalinformation.
Toexploremoreschools,theycanclicktheExplore Other Schools in the Guidewaybox.Iftheyarefinished,theyshouldclickContinue to move on to the nextstep.
NOTE: Students should save any schools that interest them into their portfolio.
Step 6 – Your Plan of StudyInthisstep,studentswillreviewtheirplanofstudytobesuretheir10thgradecourseshavebeenrecordedaccurately.Studentscanmarktheircurrent10thgradecoursesasenrolledandvalidatetheirplansfor11th&12thgradetoensuretheyareontracktograduate.Students should update their plan if theircareerpathwayorpostsecondaryplanshavechanged.
Hint: Youcanaskstudentstosubmittheirplantoyouforapproval.FromthereportstabintheProfessionalCenter,youcandeterminewhich studentsareontrackforgraduation.
Oncetheplanhasbeenreviewed,revisedandupdated,studentscanclickContinueontheguidewaybadgeatthetopofthepage.

Step 7 – Journal Reflection
Inthelaststep,studentshaveachancetojournalabouttheircareerdevelopmentprocessthusfar.Studentsmayreflectontheircareerplansastheycurrentlystand,or look ahead to their future goals and accomplishments.
Toenterareflection,clickAdd a New Journal Entry.
Onceanentryhasbeenadded, studentsshouldclick SaveatthebottomleftandthenContinue in the guideway badgeatthetopofthepage.EntriescanbeeditedbyusingtheEditbutton.
Summary
Onceallofthestepshavebeencompleted,asummarypagewillappear to let the student know theguidewayisfinished.Studentsmustcontinuetothissummarypagebeforeitwillshowtheyhavecompletedtheguideway.
Allofthestudent’sworkissavedsotheycanrevisitanyofthesteps of the guideway at any time.
