PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is a great honour to be a member of a club with the traditions and history of the Sandy Bay Bowls and Community Club, and an even greater honour to be fortunate enough to serve the club as President.

As you will read in the reports from our Match Committee Chairs, we have enjoyed great sporting success as a club, with our pennant teams competing aggressively but fairly, and reaping the rewards of hard work, talent and planning. On three competition days, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday our teams have participated in pennant finals and this reflects very well on our club structures and culture. Our individual members have also enjoyed success and we have been represented at State over 60 level, State Open level and State Junior level as well as being represented at regional over 60 level, regional Open level and regional Junior Level. Our members who give up time to represent us in State and regional sides grow from the experience and return to add value to our teams, and to our club and they are to be commended.

Our male and female Chairs of Selectors, Joan Middleton and Lindsay Lovell, together with the team selectors, completed another year and the success of our teams is testament to the effort they have put into what is always a difficult task. In order to make things a little more straight forward as we continue to transition from single gender to mixed gender bowls selection, the General Committee have recently amended the Constitution and Rules of the Club to align the selection Chairs to the days of Pennant competition rather than to gender, so next year we will see Chairs for Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday Pennant Selection Committees which should make our processes simpler and help us to cope with any further gender changes that may be made by Bowls Tasmania South.

I would like to thank the hard working members of the Committee for their efforts this year. The Committee began the year intent on seeing the Club progress and improve and I am pleased to say we have made positive changes. We began by drawing a line under a couple of issues carried over from last year. It has been satisfying to see a new uniform being worn by our members, and to see a slightly more pragmatic approach to the issue of smoking in the environs of our club. We have taken steps to significantly upgrade the BBQ area and have invested in new outdoor furniture.

We have looked at our Constitution and Rules and at a recent Special General Meeting we moved and passed a number of amendments to keep the document contemporary and relevant, and to continue the ongoing process of unifying the club. We have also investigated various options for development work at the club and we have started the process of updating and upgrading the toilets, change-rooms and office space at the club to improve the amenity for all members, but more importantly to make our main clubhouse a space that is more amenable to all of our members, regardless of gender. We have been active in seeking external funding for development work and have commitments in writing from the Premier, the Hon Will Hodgman MP and the Hon Elise Archer MP to provide full funding for an array of solar panels for the club which should significantly reduce our ongoing electricity costs.

Our Corporate and Barefoot bowlers continue to be a club blessing. I cannot understate their importance to our club both financially, and as a continuing and reliable source of new members. This year we have separated the role of managing corporate bookings and used a single point of contact and mobile phone number to ensure we are consistent and professional. This has worked well and it is to the credit of our volunteer members and caterers that they have dealt with the increased numbers arriving at the club. At our recent Special General

President’s Report Cont’d Meeting we also made a change to our member structure, removing one level of social membership to ensure we are able to deal fairly and effectively with all the social bowlers who visit the club on Wednesdays and Fridays to participate in the social bowls competitions we arrange. It is a source of great pleasure to me to see members of our barefoot bowls teams making the transition from part time to full time bowler and ultimately to see them become full members of our club. Our two annual bowls events are the Turkey Fours and the Australia Day Fours. We have made a conscious decision to make these two events fun social days for our own members, and for visitors from other clubs. Both events have been extremely well patronized this year and this follows on from a successful year for each last year. We will continue with this theme and try to avoid emulating the efforts of other clubs that offer big prizemoney at the expense of a fun experience.

Our club membership has stabilized over the last few seasons and I think this year we have begun to see the green shoots of new membership and a potential increase over the coming season. While we have participated in Bowls Tasmania and Bowls Australia programmed ‘Open Days’ it seems clear that word of mouth and our own barefoot and social competitions are our best avenues for recruitment. I urge each of you encourage at least one person to come and try the lifestyle opportunity that being a member of a club such as ours presents. I think it is not an unreasonable goal for us to try to introduce at least one new team next year as a first step to reversing what has been a gradual but inexorable decline in membership.

As I write this report the last of the regional and State finals are being played and we are fortunate to be the host club for ‘the big games’. Our greens are immaculate, always, and they should be a source of great pride to all members, as they are to me. I have avoided naming the many volunteers who do so much work around our club, partly because I am terrified I will miss someone out and offend them, and partly because I know they do not seek that type of affirmation – I appreciate their efforts, they know that I do, and I tell them quietly and privately whenever I get the chance, and I encourage each of you to do so as well. Andrew Norris is not a volunteer, he is an employee of our club and he performs a vital and difficult role exceptionally well so I will name him and publicly thank him for efforts. His efforts are far in excess of what he is paid for, he is a constant, a cheerful and obliging presence at our club and we would be a poorer place without him. Another employee is Gaele Welling, who is without doubt the consummate professional bar steward who is a pleasure to deal with and we are fortunate that she has chosen to work with us. I am sure that all our members and visitors leave after receiving professional friendly service and knowing that they have been made welcome.

I would like to thank the members of this year’s Committee for their loyalty and endeavours, and I hope they all feel, as I do, that they have made a positive contribution to the life of the Club and its members.

MEMBERSHIP This season we were pleased to welcome the following new and returning members to the club: New Full members: Elena del Pio, Olive Graves, Jacquie Phillips, Miranda Wood, Helen Lester, Cynthia Shave, Felicity Ives, Josh Mabb, David Douce, Isaac Maughan, Richard Wilson, Peter Howell, Stewart Cashion, Michael Glancy, Russ Lowes, Shane Peck, and Frederick Wain. New Social Bowling Members: Gail Andersson, Jan Hobbs, Deb Hill, Margaret Fletcher, Margaret Wyett, Adrienne Calnan, Wendy and Glenn Frame, Chris Lane and Peter Tatham. New social members: Rod Cooper, Lucy Rayner and Jaqi King.

Welcomed to the ranks of full membership were John Quinn, Graham Main, Graeme Groom and Hilary Johnson, who have caught the bug well and truly and upgraded from their social bowls membership. Five members downgraded their membership from full to social membership during the last season.

Resignations and Transfers: Jean Hemmings, Mike Hemmings, Michael Thompson, Alex McCoull, Glenna Thompson, Carmel Rainbird, Olivia Holmes, Ben Dayton, Rod Cooper, Tony Anderson, Mike Treloggan, Peter Kirby, Rod Purcell, Ian Mills, Peter Speare, Josh Lording, John Vincent, David Foster, Daniel Walsh and Trevor Wilcox.

Deaths: It is with much sadness that the club has recorded the deaths of two greatly valued and respected members, Bev Short and Life Member Jack Wivell.

Membership Statistics: Currently there are 12 Life Members; 57 Full Members (men); 40 Full Members (women); 2 Junior/Student members; 13 Social Bowling Members (men); 17 Social Bowling Members (women); 15 Social members and 1 Special Member. Total 157. The club has recently made a constitutional change to reduce the number of social membership levels offered. There is now just one social membership level for all our social bowling members, Barefooters and Twilight bowlers. This change gives all those people equal access to the various opportunities for bowling provided by the club. Our best source of new members continues to be our social and barefoot bowlers, however the Bowls Tas initiative, Come Try Bowls Day, held in early October 2017, was successful again this year, attracting 50 interested members of the public to our club to have a go at the game. The day resulted in one new full member and several players who joined our barefoot and twilight groups. Jenny Rayner

BAR We have been very lucky to have Gaele Welling operate the bar again. She has made the bar area more attractive and her willingness to help in other areas has been greatly appreciated. I sincerely thank her for her contribution. Lindsay Lovell has continued as Licensee and I thank him for his assistance. Also I thank other members who have helped during the past season. It has been another successful year for the bar in particular with the club hosting the Premier League grand final and the State Pennant finals the following week. Also the club had more corporate bookings this season and these functions contributed to the revenue. There has been minimal maintenance required this year. The fridge had a new compressor installed and the beer taps were replaced. I would also like to thank Michael Seddon for his computer expertise in adding new additions on the cash register. CATERING

The catering year began with the Club’s popular Winter Warmers. To set the ball rolling, Helen Smith and Cecelia Wedd treated us to some delicious and warming pasta dishes. For the second event, we decided on a Greek theme, prepared of course by our own Jimmy Roussos, who created a variety of Greek dishes spiced with a touch of Zorba! We also began a deliberate policy of ensuring Barefoot Bowlers are invited to our various Club functions.

In this past year, Jimmy Roussos has done much of the cooking for the various events and is to be sincerely thanked for again carrying out the role of provedore for the Club, ensuring all events have the supplies that are needed when required and are purchased at a good price. Two other people who need to be thanked are Jaqui Hopson, who has been employed to make the Saturday afternoon teas and Gaele Welling who has provided nibbles on the bar and assisted with Friday night Barefoot Bowls.

Once the greens were available for bowling the serious business began, beginning with the Opening of the Greens Party which was attended by a record number of 83 people, lured no doubt by the promise of a delicious supper of scallops and chicken prepared by Jimmy Roussos and Geoff Dannock. Assisted by other members, Jimmy catered for the Hash House Harriers, a saveloy day on Grand Final Day, as well as sausage sizzles for various functions such as the Try Bowls Day and the pre-Christmas and end of season barefoot functions, which this season reached new heights of culinary excellence! He also provided saveloys and rolls for our own bowlers and visitors from other clubs. A new function this year was the Calcutta Night, to which many members contributed food and assistance to provide a substantial supper. Unfortunately, the Turkey Fours was a washout, but 60 potential competitors were more than happy to substitute Jimmy’s delicious meal of roast turkey and Christmas pudding with brandy sauce for a game of bowls!

In the meantime, Stef Graf and Brian Coleman, together with Peter Rayner, David Lovett and David Anderson were working hard to upgrade the barbecue area which has been a huge success. This has been complemented by the purchase of aluminium tables to make for a much more comfortable outside dining area.

Another extremely successful event was the Australia Day Chicken and Prawn Fours. Peri Buckley helped with organisation and while Pam Thompson, Helen Lester and Sandra Main prepared the lunch, many other willing volunteers, including Helen Smith, Jeannie Lahl and Cecelia Wedd worked to make the day enjoyable for all. Special mention goes to Phil Manning and Lindsay Lovell for their superb cocktails which really set the day in motion!

Thanks to organiser, David Anderson, there has been a significant increase in the number of corporate events this year, many of which have required additional catering that has also mainly been provided by Jimmy and a dedicated group of helpers.

All these events, whether Club or Corporate, are an important source of revenue, as well as a great opportunity for socialising, but would not be able to occur without the wonderful group of volunteers who so willingly give up their time to assist on these occasions. The Club’s catering output is outstanding when one considers it is almost all based on the volunteer work of the members – an indication of your enthusiasm, commitment and generosity.

MATCH COMMITTEE (WOMEN)

Club championships were all played within the requisite time frames with no B grade matches due to an insufficient number of entries. The results of the women’s championships were as follows: Open Singles Chris Dowl Open Pairs Jacquie Phillips and Ann Whenn Open Triples Chris Dowl, Robyn Leggett and Lynn Barlow Open Fours Chris Dowl, Lynn Barlow, Gail Price and Anne Hinkley Major Minor Pairs Di Peck and Miranda Wood Mixed Pairs Laura Best and Bryce Guy Generally, numbers of entries were down in most of the competitions and it would be good to see all of our women bowlers entering the competitions in future. It was encouraging to see a Division 2 partnership get up to win the Open Pairs competition this year. A mixed triples event with a team member from each division could be one way to help to boost the number of club members participating in club championship games and provide another chance for success for players from Divisions 2 and 4. For the first time ever, women entered in the Fitzgerald Handicap Singles event, and did well with Jacquie Phillips reaching the final four in the semi-finals, and both Lynn Barlow and Chris Dowl the final eight players in the quarter-finals. There were several good wins by women over some of the highly fancied men, which all made for an interesting and varied competition. Thanks go to the committee for opening up this event to the women of the club. The men’s and women’s match managers joined forces to organise the main club social events; the Turkey Fours and the MCMF Australia Day Fours. Rain defeated the Turkey fours, however the Christmas lunch was held regardless and was a huge success. The format of the Australia Day fours was kept the same as the previous season and once again was an excellent day with about 4 or 5 teams from other clubs joining us for the event. Particular thanks must go to Helen Smith for her wonderful efforts in organising the Christmas Raffle which has replaced the Women’s Fair Day as the women’s major fund raiser. The raffle made in the vicinity of $3000 for the club. Several of our women members were successful in BTS and BT events held during this last season. Peri and Yvonne Buckley won the BTS Open Women’s Pairs competition. Jacquie Phillips, Di Peck, Laura Best and Gail Price were all selected to play in the winning State-wide Challenge (Senior Over 60) competition and Laura Best, Gail Price and Di Peck were members of the BTS Southern side. Laura Best, Lynn Barlow, Jackie Phillips, and Anne Hinkley, won the BTS over 60 Fours competition and Laura Best, Lynn Barlow, Anne Hinkley and Robyn Leggett won the women’s State Over 60 Fours competition. Jann Baxter from our Division 4 side on Thursdays won the BTS B Grade women’s singles final. Congratulations are extended to all those players. Hopefully next year just the men’s and Women’s Match Committees can combine to run both men’s and women’s club events, organise our participants in BTS and BT events as well as run our club fun days. MATCH COMMITTEE (MEN)

Club Championships 2017-18 Congratulations go to the following Championship winners: Open Singles David Douce Open Pairs Andrew Norris and Mike Seddon Open Triples Peter Rayner, Phil Manning and David Anderson Open Fours Alex Stanelos, Peter Rayner, Phil Manning and David Anderson B Grade Singles Richard Wilson B Grade Pairs Richard Wilson and Gerald Coombes Mixed Pairs Bryce Guy and Laura Best Major Minor Pairs Bob Bye and Derek Oseman Super Veterans Singles Brian Coleman Veteran Singles Brian Coleman Fitzgerald Handicap Singles Phil Hobbs David Douce and Richard Wilson also went on to represent the Club at the Champion of Champions Singles event. Unfortunately we had insufficient entries for the B Grade Triples and Fours. The Fitzgerald Handicap Singles attracted a possible record, 63 entries this year with substantially increased prize money and a Calcutta creating a surge of interest in the event and a very healthy blend of men and women participants. Many games in all rounds offered some great entertainment for many of our members over the course. After 2 very good semi-finals between Phil Hobbs/Josh Mabb and Paul McCann/ Jacquie Phillips, the final was played between Phil and Paul with their respective owners Andrew Norris and Graeme Paine very keenly interested in the outcome. The accolades eventually went to Phil Hobbs in a close game with brilliant bowls played by both players. Social Events Turkey Fours: Attracted 14 teams, comprising 40 members, 11 visitors and 5 social bowlers. Unfortunately the 3 games scheduled for the day were abandoned due to very poor weather. With some hasty work from the organisers all players involved were invited to still attend and the wonderful lunch prepared by Provedore Jimmy and some keen and very valued volunteers was enjoyed by all, which was followed by a big raffle of 12 turkey’s, lamb roasts, donated gift vouchers and beverages. Wonderful support for the event was also received and very much appreciated from our Patron, Brian Mann. MCMF Australia Day Fours: The Men’s and Women’s Match Committees combined this year for the running of a very successful event. With our new sponsor for this event being Murdoch Clarke MF, substantial prize money and give-aways, along with many other prizes were on offer and hence attracted a terrific field of 20 teams, which included many visitors from other clubs. Jimmy and Yvonne with a team of volunteers provided a beautiful chicken and prawn lunch. Peri also ran the popular jackpot “corner to corner” competition once again, where it almost went off twice. Many thanks are extended to all involved on the day. The winners were- Alex Stanelos, Graeme Paine, Mark Quinane, Steve Graetzer. The runners up were- Paul McCann, Lynn Barlow, Ann and Keith Hinkley.

The 2017-18 Season was closed out on the 24 and 25 March when we hosted 12 teams in 4 of the 7 divisions competing. The games were played under very uncomfortable conditions over one and a half days. Jimmy and a small team worked very hard to provide food for the many players and supporters, and another group of very willing Members volunteered their time around the greens to ensure this event ran smoothly. UMPIRES The Sandy Bay umpires this year have accredited themselves extremely well and I thank Gail Price, David Back, Peri Buckley, Trevor Abbott, Celia Wedd, and Shane Peck who received his National umpires’ accreditation also, for their diligence when representing the club at pennant games, and BTS and BTAS events. Some of the umpires equipment and storage has been upgraded. I encourage our Club members to take part in the Marker, Measurer and umpires courses that are run throughout the year, a timetable for which is on the BTS website.

SPONSORSHIP/FUNDRAISING/RAFFLES

Dennis Pegg officially handed over the reins of sponsorship for the 2017-2018 season however he responded without hesitation to my requests for help in approaching some old contacts of his and I thank him sincerely for that. All in all it was a successful year with just short of $10,000 being raised through cash and vouchers. By the time of the printing of the annual report $7,100 will have been paid in cash to the club and $2,790 in weekly vouchers for raffle/prize type activity – CUB also provided barrelled beer which at ‘in kind’ value has put this year’s total over $10,000. Additional prizemoney and donations were received from some of our annual sponsors for the Australia Day Fours as well as from two generous donations by new people: Blue Eye Restaurant and Gay Flowers.

The sponsorship deck chairs were rearranged a bit this year as DJ Motors and Mathew Groom did not renew. However the club is extremely pleased to have attracted a new major sponsor in Murdoch Clark Management Fund (members will have personally benefited from a generous supply of caps, coffee containers and drinking bottles bearing the MCMF logo) and other new sponsors TAG–GIT and FEET2U. A substantial 5 year sponsorship deal was signed with CUB/Cascade and our club gratefully accepted renewed support from Bennett’s Petroleum, Knight Frank, Prime Dental, Greens Quality Meats, Doctor Syntax, Vershashi, Wrest Point, Chemist Warehouse, Elise Archer MP, Sandy Bay Newsagent and Cascade Hotel. Our patron Brian Mann and Lindsay Lovell also made significant contributions to the club.

I encourage members to utilize the products or services that our sponsors deal in when you need something of the kind and let them know that you are a member of the club and appreciate their support. Raffles were conducted most pennant days and the coin board spin ran on a regular basis.

Alex Stanelos

CLUB DEVELOPMENT The Club has been looking at a possible development proposal involving the property at 18 Margaret Street. However this property has recently been sold, so the committee turned its attention to the redevelopment of the current men’s locker room. A number of possibilities were considered with the committee deciding to proceed with a development based on a revised version of the plan originally proposed by David Anderson. This plan is currently being costed by an architect in anticipation of applying for a development grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation.

GREENS REPORT

Once again Andrew Norris prepared greens that received universal acclaim from not only our own members but those of other clubs. Bowls Tasmania South provided confirmation of this view by allocating finals to our club for both Thursday and Saturday pennant. Our greens were also utilized for the State Saturday pennant finals. Alex Stanelos

MAINTENANCE Listed below are the major maintenance items carried out this year. 1. The greens sprinkler system was repaired twice during the year, in each case the

underground water pipes had burst. 2. A new lighting system was installed in the BBQ area. 3. A gate was installed in the fence between the greenkeeper’s shed and the top club house. 4. Russ Lowes (Mr TAG-GIT) tested all the electrical equipment and leads in the club without

charging the club for this service. Russ identified the long extension lead on the greens mower as faulty. This has been replaced.

5. Gordon Dowl constructed and installed new cigarette disposal bins for the club, these are proving much more efficient than the old trays.

6. A sensor was installed in the men’s toilet to automatically activate the extraction fan upon entering the area.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON SOCIAL BOWLS

An enjoyable season of Friday Afternoon Social Bowls concluded at the end of March. We were all saddened at the passing of long-time supporter and organiser of this event when we lost Bev Short towards the end of 2017. She will be missed by all. Player numbers were good with the average in the mid-twenties and in the last weeks we had between 28 and 30 players. We were excited to see that many of our regulars were so successful playing in the Division 6 Saturday pennant and playing in the Southern Grand Final and only going down by 3 shots. Two memorable occasions took place during the season. The first being a surprise birthday celebration provided by a secret admirer for one of our players. We all benefited from the three exotic cakes and drinks to enjoy. The other celebration was the end of season barbecue attended by 31 players who enjoyed prime steaks and salmon fillets. A big thank you must go to Yvonne and David who cooked to perfection and to those who provided the delicious salads and desserts. Finally my thanks go to those who have helped during the season, especially Colin and Judy for stepping in during my absences and to those who regularly brought prizes for our raffles.

Bruce Price

FRIDAY TWILIGHTERS

The Friday Night Twilight Players are still enjoying their evening game. A few players have moved to the Friday afternoon social group. A few new players joined our Friday Team as well as maintaining some long time players. The average number remained at approximately 30. It is excellent for our Club to have players enjoying our greens in the Twilight hours. Special thanks go to Di Vertigan who organized and supplied snacks and nibbles for players at the end of their game. I also thank Gaele Welling for finishing the night with the draw for the winners each week to enable me to finish earlier. Thanks must also go to cooks who barbecued each week for the players to enjoy a sausage sizzle. More advertised promotion is needed for this night to keep the numbers rolling in.

All the Happy Friday Nighters await daylight saving and the greens to open again for next season.

WREST POINT WEDNESDAY BAREFOOT BOWLS

Once again the interest in barefoot bowls continues. At the start of the season we attracted 31 teams which meant we were able to divide them into two divisions once again, with byes in both divisions. It was pleasing to see the number of new teams that signed up this year, introducing yet more players to the game. Nearly all the teams turned up on a regular basis and the games were played in good spirit. This year we were lucky with the weather only losing two games. The Paul Bennett Challenge just before Christmas continues to grow and has become a wonderful opportunity for members to meet and talk to Barefooters. The handicaps this year weren’t realistic with the Barefooters finishing on top of the pennant players. The end of season One Bowl 4s game was held again this year, attracting 34 Members and Barefooters. It would be remiss of me not to thank the many people who so readily give their time to ensure the barefoot bowls runs smoothly and profitably for the club. Special thanks to Pat Wilkes and Mick Seddon for their help each week. Thanks also to the members who helped throughout the year on the BBQ roster especially Michael Polegaj who continued on from the last five years as the BBQ master, turning up each week to help out. Thanks too to President Phil Hobbs who also filled in for me on several occasions. Thanks to Yvonne Bennett and all the volunteers for their help with the Christmas and End of Season dinners. A special thanks to Jimmy Roussos whose imaginative menus and wonderful cooking brought many more Barefooters back to the dinners this season. Thanks also to Gaele and Captain Mannering for their running of the bar each week and to Peri Buckley for helping out when needed. Thanks to Albie Norris for preparing the greens every week. Special thanks to our naming rights sponsor, Wrest Point. Congratulations to the winners this year. In Div 1 it was The Golden Jacks, in Div 2 Bowled Over and the Handicap Competition was won by The Golden Jacks. The Golden Jacks represented Sandy Bay Bowls and Community Club at the Champion of Champions tournament at the Kingborough Indoor Bowling Centre at the end of the season. It was won by Brighton with The Golden Jacks finishing 6th out of 9. The club continues to receive applications for membership from Barefooters and as long as we continue to make it as much fun as possible this will continue to happen. I am looking forward to the next season. Graeme Paine OAM

SELECTION Firstly many thanks to the selectors, Brad Mabb, Phil Manning, Graeme Paine, David Lovett and David Back who took over from David Lovett part way through the season. A thank you to those people who filled in for me at the last minute in Saturday and Midweek Pennant. Saturday Pennant Premier Division finished 4th on percentage and beat Kingborough by 26 shots in the Semi Final only to be beaten by Glenorchy-Rodman in the Preliminary Final. Division 2 managed to finish 8th on the ladder after a poor start to the season and ended with a number of wins in the latter part of the year, only 2 games out of the 4. Division 3 ended the season in 5th position and only 6 points out of the 4 with only 3 more rink wins needed during the year. Division 6 was the Club’s only team to play off in the Grand Final this year and to lose it by 3 shots to Howrah was a brilliant effort. Coming from 4th on the ladder made it all the better. Midweek Competition In Division 1 we managed to end the season 2nd on the ladder and lost the Semi Final by 5 shots on a very quick green to New Norfolk and lost the Semi Final to Howrah. Division 2 ended up on the bottom of the ladder which was not helped by the unavailability of some players over the season.

SELECTION Thursday Pennant

Selectors for this season were Yvonne Buckley, Division 1, Anne Whenn, Division 2 and Helen Smith, Division 4, who met each week with the Chair of Selectors, Joan Middleton. Early in the season, due to a shortage of players, Division 4 relied heavily on help from some of the men from Division 6, and for that support we thank them. There are always challenges as a selector, but with discussion and support for each other we have ended a successful season. Division 4 fought their way from near the bottom of the ladder to a position which enables them to retain their Division 4 status next season. Division 2 did very well, finishing second on the ladder by 10 points and made it to the grand final, where they were defeated by Glenorchy Rodman. A valiant effort. It was another successful season for the Sandy Bay Division 1 pennant side, who finished well out on top of their ladder by 32 points, with the side taking out the southern premiership for the eighth successive year. A wonderful feat! The success of the Division 1 and the Division 2 sides demonstrates the bowling strength within the women’s teams and as a result the task which faced the selectors for these teams was a very challenging one. However, this depth of talent does augur well for the success of Sandy Bay in future pennant competitions. Joan Middleton, Chair of Selectors, provided sound advice and support when difficult decisions were called for. Yvonne Buckley and Anne Whenn

PLAYER MILESTONES

The Committee this year decided that player milestones should be celebrated as they occurred starting at 200 games in either of Thursday or Saturday Pennant and for each additional 100 games in either of those competitions. Only one player, Peter Rayner, reached the 200 Saturday Pennant games milestone this year, however there are several members likely to reach milestones in the coming season.

Congratulations to Bobby Bye who played his 600th game in First Division during the season, a record that will stand for a long time. Peter McCulloch Peter McCulloch is to be thanked sincerely for keeping detailed records of all Saturday and Thursday pennant matches for many, many years. He has accurate records of all Saturday Pennant matches since 1962 and of all Thursday Pennant matches since the 1999/2000 season. There have been no records kept of Wednesday Midweek games to this point however, so it becomes problematic to add estimated figures from Wednesday games to the records. Tracking of those records is a task that a club member may like to take on in the future as it would give a fuller picture of members’ participation. The records up to the start of this last season indicate that next season there are quite a few Saturday players for whom the 200 game milestone for Saturday Pennant is imminent; Bob Bye is approaching his 700 Saturday Pennant games milestone to join Brian Mann on this number; and Jeremy Thiessen is approaching his 500 games milestone. Peter’s records also show that there are now eight women members who have played over 300 Thursday pennant games for the club: Gill Pratt, Chris Dowl, Jane Miller, Pat Wilkes, Win Yeung, Robyn Leggett, Maureen Woolley and Beryl Cox. Laura Best is very close to this milestone and should achieve it early next season. Another six women members have played over 200 games in Thursday Pennant; Libby Calvert, Anne Kyle, Gail Price, Gael Walker, Helen Barnes and Robin Newton. Estimates made for games played prior to 1999 show that Jane Miller played well over 600 Thursday pennant games for the club in her time at Sandy Bay and that Win Yeung will be approaching that figure in the coming year. Gill Pratt and Robyn Leggett should achieve 400 Thursday Pennant games and several other players should reach 200 Thursday Pennant games next season. Jenny Rayner

TREASURER’S REPORT Major expenditure items for the year included improvements to the barbecue area, the purchase of the aluminium outdoor settings and, the purchase of club shirts and the associated subsidy to members. These items, combined with an anticipated one-off increase in green keeping expenses resulted in a loss of $9825 for the year. Losses of this nature cannot be endured for much longer. We must consider the fact that our facilities lie idle for six months of the year and lose money. A small sustainable profit from our premises during this period would have a significant effect on the bottom line and ensure the future profitability of the Club. Despite this, the Club is in a sound financial position with considerable assets and reasonable cash reserves. Next year will see a substantial reduction in the cost of Social Membership. I believe that this will be good for the Club and as a point of principle I think that full membership fees should also be trending downward although this is not likely in the short term. Membership fees alone contribute little to the Club’s operation and represent less than 15% of our turnover. Payment of membership fees can result in an unfounded sense of entitlement. It is our volunteers that keep the club functioning and it is they who are responsible for generating the other 85%. I’d like to thank those committee members who worked tirelessly towards our financial success. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made by Di Vertigan, Athol Wilkes, Bruce Price, Helen Smith, Brian Mann, Lindsay Lovell, Pat Wilkes, David Anderson, Jimmy Roussos and Gaele Welling, and those members whose thoughts, deeds and hard physical work have ensured the success of our many fundraising efforts. 1 Basis of Financial Reporting The Club’s General Committee has determined that the Club is a “non-reporting entity” within the meaning of Statement of Accounting Concepts - “Definition of the Reporting Entity” issued by the Professional Australian Accounting Bodies. It has further determined to prepare a “special purpose financial report” annually based on accrual accounting principles and comprising a Balance Sheet and an Income Statement. The policies used in preparing this special purpose financial report are, in the opinion of the Committee, consistent with the Club’s Constitution and are appropriate to the needs of Members. These policies are described in the following notes. 2 Non bar expenses Catering, bowls apparel, stickers & equipment and the hire of buses are shown net of recouped monies. 3 Inventories Inventories are shown at the lower of cost or net realizable value. 4 Land and Buildings The value of the Club’s Land and Buildings was increased at 31st March 2015 to the valuation by the Valuer General made in 2015. Alterations to the clubhouses made since 1st April 2015 are shown at historic cost. Provision for depreciation is made on the basis of buildings’ value at 1st April 2015, the historical cost of alterations since 1st April 2015 and the buildings’ useful lives. 5 Other Non Current Assets Other Non Current Assets are shown at historic cost and acquisitions costing $1,000 or more are capitalised.
