KEY POINTS

● UCD is by a wide margin the largest concentration of undergraduate law students in

Ireland. There are approximately 1,000 undergraduate students. For a firm

seeking to recruit top level Irish graduates UCD is a priority.

● UCD is the number 1 Law School in Ireland according to QS World University

Rankings 2015.

● CAO entry points over the past 4 years have been the 2nd highest in the country.

The demograph of the average law student in UCD is far more diligent and

academically inclined than the average law student nationally due to this.

● Just short of 50% of undergraduate students study Business and Law. This is the

highest concentration of students who study such a program nationally. This

program develops extremely valuable skills for commercial law firms. Graduates

have well developed commercial awareness, and other valuable skills such as

accounting.

● UCD Law Society runs over 95 events each academic year for law students. It is

arguably the most active student society in UCD, and is the most active law student

society in Ireland.

● The society offers a means of connecting to law students on social media. Posts

have a reach of over 5,000, and have significantly higher levels of post

engagement than any graduate recruitment social media page.

● In order to promote events the society engages in a postering campaign each week.

The society achieves 80% coverage in the Sutherland School of Law. On the main

concourse the society achieves 20% coverage. The society also engages in lecture

addresses on a weekly basis.

● In order to promote our brand committee members along with other key people are

issued with “LawSoc Hoodies”. With 28 committee members and 5 members of the

Euros debating delegation, this amounts to a significant presence. During events

members are strongly encouraged to wear hoodies.

● In particular this allows Matheson to reach the most capable law students through

the many debating, mooting and national model united nations events the society

runs.

What does Lawsoc do?

● Fresher’s week campaign.

● Weekly house debates.

● National Model United Nations.

● Mooting.

● Competitive debating.

● Social events

● Career talks.

● Schools debating development programmes.

● Guest speakers and awards.

Benefits for Matheson:

● Promote Matheson to over 1,000 law students which are otherwise very difficult to

reach. under the remit of a society or through sponsorship of lecture theatres in

Sutherland. Other firms including Arthur Cox, William Fry, McCann Fitzgerald and

A&L Goodbody sponsor rooms in the Sutherland building.

● Matheson will have daily mass exposure to energetic, ambitious law students

without competition from competitors.

● Opportunities to promote Matheson from a graduate recruitment perspective

through careers talks and promotions by the society

● An association with LawSoc will allow Matheson direct access to the society’s highly

ambitious and successful members. Such an association will also increase

awareness of Matheson’s graduate recruitment programs particularly among law

students but also the student body as a whole.

● Due to its affiliation with the law school, LawSoc is the principal method that many

law students engage in university life. Thus the society’s membership is made up of

many perspective employees for Matheson, this helping to promote graduate

recruitment.

● Matheson’s branding and logo on pop-up stands and posters. Posters are displayed

every week outside the library and on the walkways along the busiest walk route on

campus. Thus Matheson’s logo and branding is displayed to students for nearly the

entire academic year.

● Create a positive image among students through its association with LawSoc.

● Matheson will receive recognition at every opportunity at events both internal and

external.

● Present Matheson as a company doing work for the greater good through

association with the society’s work such as teaching children to debate.

WELCOME TO THE UCD LAW SOCIETY

LawSoc an Overview:

Founded in 1911 the UCD Law Society or LawSoc will be entering its 105th session this

coming academic year 2015-2016. Throughout these years the LawSoc has become one of

the best known and most prestigious societies in both UCD and Ireland, reaching a

membership of over 3500 students. LawSoc has a history of attracting ambitious and

successful students to its membership. Currently LawSoc is among the most active

societies in UCD hosting a number of events each week ranging from social events to

mooting, involving many students, particularly law students. The society focuses its

activity in and around the Sutherland Law School and also in the student centre. The

society offer members information and advice about career options and provide

What does LawSoc do?

Fresher’s Week:

LawSoc’s Fresher’s Week campaign will run from the 14th-18th of

September 2015. During this time LawSoc will promote itself

through many events, talks and activities. Fresher’s week is the

main opportunity for the society to build its membership and the

best opportunity of the year to gain exposer to students.

Fresher’s week provides Matheson with an unrivalled opportunity

to gain early access to students in the college from first to final

year. The society distributes bags to each new member in which

Matheson will be given the opportunity to distribute details about

graduate recruitment and internships. There is also an opportunity

to print the Matheson logo on the bag alongside the LawSoc logo.

Additionally each new member receives a LawSoc card on which

the Matheson logo will be. There is also an opportunity to advertise in the LawSoc

magazine which has a circulation of about 4000 copies a year and provides information

about LawSoc’s events and competitions. This is an exclusive opportunity as the society

strictly limits the advertising numbers to allow for maximum exposer for each advertiser.

This ensures that Matheson will have unrivalled advertising space to attract the attention

of the magazine’s readers.

Along with these aspects LawSoc runs events through the week such as Cupcakes and

Cocktails. The Freshers Week calendar is outlines below.

Weekly Debates:

The society hosts weekly debates every Tuesday night during the academic year. Each

week the motions are interesting, topical and often controversial thus debates regularly

attract between 200-300

students. We plan on

hosting engaging debates

this coming year. Weekly

debates are an important

activity of the society,

attracting respected guest

speakers Lawsoc also

hosted the largest Irish

debate ever in 2009; The

Lisbon Treaty debate

attracting over 1200

people.

LawSoc’s weekly debates

provide a unique

opportunity for Matheson to promote itself to potential employees from across the

university each week, be seen as a firm that advocates expression of opinion and to

associate itself with the well run, highly regarded debates that the society host.

Additionally debates are promoted on posters through the entire academic year.

Matheson’s logo will be placed prominently on each of the posters. Posters are displayed

outside the library and along the main path through the campus, which has massive foot

traffic. Pop- up stands with the Matheson logo will also be displayed at debates

Competitive Debating:

Debating is a prominent part of the society and the 105th session’s committee wishes to

grow this section of the society’s activities. Through debate students learn to be assertive,

listen and overcome arguments put to them by other speakers, skills that Matheson

promote and value. Many of the society’s debating competitions also promote teamwork

which Matheson holds in high regard.

JAMES JOYCE MAIDENS

James Joyce Maidens is one of the most successful debating competitions run every year

by LawSoc. It is a competition for students who have never debated in college before to

showcase their talent. This competition attracts the most dynamic, confident and high

achieving students into its ranks. Many of which are from the law school. The final in 2015

was judged by well-known debate companions, in front of a crowd of 150 people. James

Joyce Maidens is one of the best known maidens debating competitions and is a very

prestigious event to win. Attaching Matheson’s name to such a competition would

undoubtedly be of benefit due to the prestige associated with James Joyce Maidens.

INTERVARSITIES

There are many intervarsity or IV debating competitions that LawSoc teams participate in

every year. These include SOAS IV in London, Oxford IV, Cambridge IV, Trinity IV, Cork IV

and the National Law Debates in Galway. These competitions are highly competitive and

well attended. Sponsorship of LawSoc at these events will promote the Matheson branding

to ambitious perspective employees from all over Ireland.

INTERNATIONAL AND OTHER COMPETITIONS

LawSoc sends teams to international competitions beyond the UK. The world debating

championships are attended by students from across the globe. The European debating

championships also attract students from across Europe. Other competitions that the

society participates in include the Irish Mace where participates only have fifteen minutes

to prepare.

INTERNAL COMPETITIONS

LawSoc have hosted internal debating competitions. One of which attracted 130 people

with an interest in debating to UCD. The society hopes to host this event again in the

coming year and to increase participation. These competitions would extend Matheson’s

reach to potential graduates for recruitment.

Mooting

LawSoc has had a strong tradition of mooting throughout its existence. The society

successfully runs three large mooting competitions through the academic year, all of

which attract ambitious, hard-working law students from both UCD and other colleges.

Mooting increases students’ knowledge of law and ability to apply it to various situations.

Due to the heavy workload involved with mooting the competitions only attract the most

ambitious and often

the best students,

people that

Matheson wish to

attract.

other beginners. This competition runs over two days in spring. The Vivian Lavan

competition often attracts between 25 and 35 teams a year.

CECIL LAVERY

The Cecil Lavery is Ireland's largest moot court competition. Participation in the

competition doubled this year to 48 teams. This year's competition featured six rounds in

total. Problem questions can cover many areas of the law and this year included IP,

statutory interpretation and the conflict of laws. This years final was presided over by the

Hon. Mr Justice Donal O' Donnell accompanied by former Attorney General Eoghan

Fitzsimons and Rossa Fanning. The Thomas Finlay is an intervarsity competition hosted by

the society. Mooters are usually given a problem based on International Public Law or the

European Convention of Human Rights. This year 12 teams from the UK and Ireland

competed. This years competition featured 3 rounds a semi final and a final. The final

presided over by the Hon. Mr Justice Frank Clarke alongside the Hon. Mr Justice John Mac

Menamin of the Supreme Court and the Hon. Ms Justice Mary Finlay-Geohegan of the Court

of Appeal. The society has identified this event as an area of potential growth and is

seeking to expand the competition significantly.

Having Matheson’s name at LawSoc mooting competitions gains exposer to some of the

most ambitious and intelligent students in UCD and beyond, students that are likely to be

among the top graduates within the next 3 years.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS:

Model United Nations are conferences

run to promote understanding amongst

students about what the United Nations

does on a daily basis. Each group of

delegates acts for their assigned

country and they are assigned realistic

problems and issues. A delegation is

made up of 15 delegates and 2 advisers.

LawSoc organised the UCD delegation

this year that was sent to New York

which they prepared for over a period of months.

NMUN conferences and the preparation for them helps to develop delegate’s ability to

negotiate under pressure, to debate, to lead delegations and time management. NMUN

also exposes delegates to many other cultures and the opportunity to interact with the

people from different parts of the world.

Page 10: 105 Law Society Sponsorship Proposal

Page | 10

Schools Debating: The society runs weekly school debating workshops. This training

facilitates primary and secondary school children allowing them to start early and learn to

debate competitively at a young age.

Participation is up to 150 teams of two on a weekly basis. Matheson would become known

to upwards of 300 young students every week creating awareness of the firm and a

positive image in the young people’s eyes before they even enter the college. The

society’s schools debating fits in with Matheson’s work in the Matheson Junior Debating

Irish Mace.

Career Talks:

Page 11: 105 Law Society Sponsorship Proposal

Page | 11

LawSoc endeavours to allow members to be informed about their options after they

graduate and during their studies. Matheson will has unprecedented access to LawSoc

members to inform them of the opportunities it has to offer them through career talks

hosted and promoted by LawSoc.

Social:

Along with all of the society’s more serious activities LawSoc run a series of light- hearted,

fun and well- attended social events throughout the year. The committee has two officers

whose sole focus is entertainment and event management. LawSoc social events are well

known amongst students as being enjoyable and friendly attracting many law students and

also students from across the college.

The most prestigious event of the social

calendar is the Law Ball, which sells-out 300

tickets every year and is attended by mostly law

students. The Law Ball is known by students all

over UCD and in other colleges as one of the

best nights on the student calendar.

These social events again will allow Matheson to

gain maximum exposer to students and paint

the firm in a friendly, approachable light. Being

associated with the less serious side of the society will allow students to see the firm is

not only about work but promotes reward and relaxation too.

Page 12: 105 Law Society Sponsorship Proposal

GUEST SPEAKERS AND AWARDS:

LawSoc prides itself on its ability to attract famous guests

who have made a difference in the world to receive

honorary lifetime membership for their work. In recent

years the society has welcomed Dustin Lance Black, Judge

Judy and Martin Sheen. These events attract both students

and the general public. Often each visitor attracts a large

amount of media attention with television and newspaper

coverage.

The society also awards the Vice- President Award which is

reserved exclusively for legal scholars. Receipts of this

award include Baroness Hale of Richmond and Michael

McDowell former Minister for Justice.

During each of these visits the Matheson logo will be

displayed on pop- up stand and posters which will be in the

background during interviews and photos. This is a great method of promoting Matheson to

a wide range of people. In the coming years the society plan on welcoming Judy Dench

among other visitors.
