Create A Fairy Basket

Get ready for All Hallows’ Eve by creating a fairy garden in a basket at the Westborough Public Library on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. This workshop will be led by Betsy Williams and space is lim-ited so make sure you register early. Register online at www.westboroughlib.org or call the library at 508-366-3050.

Are there fairies at the bottom of your garden” Possible, but even if there aren’t, it is great fun to pretend! Come and create a tiny dwelling and garden in a 6” basket that just might entice the fairies to come and play.

We’ll begin by planting ivy to give the little people a bit of pri-vacy. Then, using bark, leaves, twigs, and other natural materi-als, build a charming little home that any fairy would be pleased to move into. Of course, the little people like sparkle, so we’ll add a tiny bit of sparkle to complete

our fairy basket. Be sure to bring an apron and garden scissors to class.

Betsy Williams has been growing, selling, decorating, and teaching about living with herbs and flowers since 1972. She is a member of the Herb Society of America, Garden Writers of America, and the International Herb Association. She also teaches at Tower Hill Botanic Garden.

Don’t miss this opportunity to create your own fairy garden in a basket! For more information, call the library at 508-366-3050.

Westborough LibraryThe Westborough Public

Library will be hosting a show-ing of a professionally prepared video of the Assabet Valley Mastersingers performance of “Annelies” on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 2 p.m.

“Annelies” is a choral dramatic work based on “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl”, which takes the teenager’s remark-able and penetrating observa-tions, written whilst hiding in an Amsterdam attic, as the basis of its extraordinary and mov-ing libretto. The libretto is com-piled and translated by Melanie Challenger, and the music is by James Whitbourn. Whitbourn’s music creates a score “whose respectful understatement is its greatest strength” (The Times). This performance by the Assabet Valley Mastersingers, Dr. Robert P Eaton, Director, was accompa-nied by full orchestra with Lynn Eustis as the soloist. Also per-forming with AVM was the Shir Joy Chorus, Wendy Damoulakis, Director.

Tom Morgan of Westborough WTV was the videographer and producer of the video record-ing in collaboration with Josef Reznicek of Bostonia Records for sound recording.

This program is free and open to the public. For more informa-tion, call the library at 508-366-3050.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Bring A Touch Of China To Your Kitchen (NAPSA)-Chinese food is perennially popular among Americans. Whether it’s a casual dinner or a large celebration, the Chinese restaurant is likely to be a dining destination. Every region of the United States has Chinese restaurants, and some well-known dishes were in fact invented in this coun-try, such as chop suey and fortune cookies. Most traditional dishes are cooked very quickly in a small amount of oil and seasoned with soy sauce and ginger. The ease of preparation and the availabil-ity of ingredients is why more Americans are bringing Chinese cuisine into their own kitchens. An even easier way to pre-pare Asian food in your home is to use a ready-made dressing, such as Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce. It combines fresh ginger, onion and garlic with rice vinegar, sesame and canola oil. Great for marinating chicken or tofu as well as on salads, it’s full of authentic flavor without MSG, trans fats or preser-vatives. Not only that, it’s low in calories and sodium. Sesame Ginger Lettuce Wraps 11⁄2 pounds chicken (boneless, skinless, cut into cubes) 1⁄3 cup cashews (or peanuts) 1⁄4 cup grated carrot 3⁄4 cup mushrooms (diced) 1⁄4 cup bean sprouts (optional) 1 can diced water chestnuts (optional) 1 head of lettuce (washed) 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce Spray skillet with cooking spray. Cook mushrooms and chicken until done. Add the cashews, grated carrot, bean sprouts and water chestnuts. Cook 2 minutes. Add 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce; heat through. Separate let-tuce leaves. Spoon chicken mix-ture into lettuce leaves, depending on size. Fold to eat. Serves 6.For more information and recipes, visit www.litehousefoods.com.

How Do Americans Perceive Satisfying Nutritional Needs?(NewsUSA) - Although con-

sumers say they are at least somewhat knowledgeable about nutrition, new research from the International Food Information Council (IFIC) shows several wide gaps between American’s perception of their nutrient

intakes and reality..“While there is some disparity

between perceived nutrient ade-quacy and actual nutrient intake, it is notable that consumers rec-ognize the benefits their food can offer,” says Sarah Romotsky, registered dietitian and associate director of health and wellness at the IFIC Foundation. “Indeed, health-promoting foods and food components, like blueberries, yogurt, fish, milk and fortified breads and breakfast cereals, play an important role in meet-ing nutrient needs and improving overall health.”

According to the 2013 IFIC Functional Foods Consumer sur-vey, however, the majority of respondents (almost 70 percent) believe they fall short of meeting “all or nearly all” of their nutri-tional needs.

What’s more, a comparison of the survey’s findings and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data shows gaps between how many believe their intakes are adequate versus recommended daily intakes or nutrient intake recommendations (Dietary Reference Intakes from the Institute of Medicine). For nutrients such as vitamin D (68 percent perception vs. 32 percent consumption), potassium (61 percent vs. less than 3 percent) and fiber (67 percent vs. 5 per-cent), the discrepancy between perception and reality is glaring.

The high percentage of con-sumers who are meeting their needs for B vitamins may be a testament to how fortification can help consumers meet their nutrient needs.

“Breads, rice and cereals, which are often fortified with B Vitamins, may be helping consumers meet their B vita-min needs, without the consumer realizing the added value,” says Romotsky.

However, there are still gaps in knowledge and consumption of a variety of other beneficial components, such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, flavonoids and zeaxanthin.

The good news, though, according to the survey, is that consumer interest in learning more about foods with ben-efits beyond basic nutrition remains high. Almost nine in 10 Americans say they are interest-ed in learning more about foods that have health benefits beyond basic nutrition, but cited barriers such as price.

Thinking About Retirement And Social

Security? It Pays To Wait

(NewsUSA) - Waiting to take Social Security retirement ben-efits can increase your monthly benefit as much as 76 percent, according to a new toolkit, “When to Take Social Security: It Pays to Wait,” released by the nonpartisan National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI).

The toolkit includes a three-minute video, a one-page fact sheet and a 16-page brief to edu-cate workers nearing retirement about the advantages of delay-ing their Social Security benefits beyond age 62, if they can.

Key messages for older work-ers include: (1) If you need Social

Security to make ends meet, take it -- you’ve earned it. (2) But if you can wait, even a year or two, your monthly benefit will be higher -- for the rest of your life. (3) If you are married, you have two lives to plan for. If you are the higher earner, waiting to take Social Security means a higher survivor benefit for your spouse if she or he outlives you.

“One of the most important financial decisions we make is when to start receiving Social Security retirement benefits,” said William Arnone, Chair of NASI’s Board of Directors and retired partner at Ernst & Young, LLP. “The gains from waiting are much greater than they used to be.” A worker who can wait until 70 will get a benefit that is 76 percent higher than if she had taken Social Security at 62.

“Because Social Security lasts for life and keeps up with the cost of living, it may be the big-gest asset a worker has,” said Virginia Reno, NASI’s Vice President for Income Security Policy.

If you think of Social Security as a key retirement asset, you may want to increase it by delay-ing when you start benefits, if you can. Learn more at www.NASI.org/WhenToTakeSocialSecurity.

What You Should Know About Natural

Food ColoringWhen you walk down the

aisles of your local grocery store, there’s a good chance you’ll see a parent or two scrupulously read-ing packaging for buzzwords, like healthy, organic and natural -- the list goes on. Maybe you’re one of those parents.

When making food decisions for your family, you might be looking for healthy, delicious options that your children will want to eat. Notorious for being picky eaters, however, kids won’t eat something unless it looks good. So, you must add one more element to your shop-ping criteria: visual appeal -- namely coloring.

Yogurt needs to have a pretty pastel hue. Fruit juices need to have sweet shades. And each cereal flake needs to look as inviting as the box promises -- like more than, well, just oats. The big question: How can this happen naturally?

“Natural colors are derived from all the active ingredients responsible for colors found in nature, like plants, fruits and veg-etables,” says Tammi Higgins, Natural Colors Commercial Development Manager at FMC. “They’re used in food and bever-ages as an alternative to artificial colors made from coal tar and petroleum. Nature is able to pro-vide bright and vivid colors in every shade of the rainbow.”

Think of grapes and red beets -- likely items in your fridge.

Anthocyanins, derived from grapes and other fruits and veg-etables, impart vivid pink to red to purple hues in a wide range of foods, including fruit chews and fruit-based beverages. And the beetroot helps intensify the color of tomato paste or achieve that familiar red in red velvet cake.

Annatto is also one of those beautiful color sources found in

nature. It is the seed of the tropi-cal bush Bixa Orellana -- known as the lipstick tree -- which is a plant native to Central and South America. In addition to being used as a spice in tradi-tional cooking, annatto seeds can deliver a bright yellow to orange color, a hallmark of macaroni and cheese -- a perennial family favorite.

Foods with natural color-ing offer a cleaner label with recognizable, non-chemical ingredients. Natural colors are derived from sustainable sources and adhere to vegan, Halal and Kosher standards. They can even be certified organic.

So, as you comb the grocery aisles for healthy alternatives for your family -- or the occasional candy-coated chocolate treat -- look for foods enhanced with colors from nature. Remember, anytime something is added to food, like a natural color to enhance its hue or salt, to preserve it, it’s considered an additive. But when that additive comes from Mother

Nature, you can feel confi-dent that you’re making a smart choice.

Future Army Museum To Salute

Service Groups(NAPSI)—A foundation that

honors the U.S. Army has found a new way to salute the efforts of organizations that serve veterans.

The Army Historical Foundation, the nonprofit des-ignated to lead the campaign to build the National Museum of the United States Army, has cre-ated an exclusive opportunity for veterans service organizations.

The National Army Museum will be the first museum to tell the entire storied history of the nation’s oldest and largest mili-tary service. Interactive galler-ies will educate visitors on the Army’s role in times of war and

peace, the relationship between the Army and the nation it serves, and the Army’s contributions to geography, science, technology, engineering and math.

By supporting the museum, Army units, alumni groups, and military and veteran associa-tions of all kinds can have their efforts permanently honored in the Veterans’ Hall, a space within the museum that will host official functions and showcase pieces of the Army’s collection of combat artwork and artifacts.

Sponsoring organizations will have their names permanently displayed in the Veterans’ Hall. Groups offering higher levels of support will have enhanced

access to the Hall, receive invi-tations to campaign events, and get personalized tours of the museum.

In addition, the Foundation collects stories of soldiers and veterans through the Registry of the American Soldier. This elec-tronic database is open to anyone who served in the U.S. Army. It will be accessible via computer kiosks in the museum and online. The Registry is free and ensures a soldier’s story is forever told in the future home of Army history.

How Great Deeds And Good Dishes Can

Pay Off(NAPSI)—Here is food

for thought: The first annual Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest from General Mills Foodservice not only awarded neighborhood restaurants for their local flavor but celebrated the vital role these small busi-nesses play in their community.

The Grand Prize Winner, Beylka Krupp of Wobble Café in Ossining, New York, got $40,000 cash plus $10,000 to share with a local charity of her choice for her award-winning recipe for Shrimp Étouffée. The popular dish has a large customer following at the family-friendly, neighborhood eatery known for its brunches, baked goods and soups—as well as its civic-mindedness.

Wobble Café sponsors youth sports teams, hosted the national “Cops and Coffee” program and helps in efforts to improve the areas schools and town. Beylka and her husband, Rich Foshay, never turn down an opportunity to help a nonprofit or service group.

Krupp’s winning recipe in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest includes a deli-cious Cajun-spiced shrimp stew that blends tomato, garlic, onion, cream and Cajun spices and herbs served with rice and jala-peño cheese corn bread.

“Our judges were wowed by Beylka’s mouthwatering Shrimp Étouffée recipe, and we were truly inspired by her tireless commitment to her local com-munity,” said Danielle Benson, associate channel manager for General Mills Foodservice. “All three of the finalists are winners

for how they bring the spirit of ‘Neighborhood to Nation’ to life, from their one-of-a-kind dishes that showcase their local flavor to how each of them contributes to their local community without expecting anything in return.”

The two runners-up each receive $10,000. They are DeDe Johnson of Johnson’s Farm Restaurant in Orange, Mass., who submitted a melt-in-your-mouth, moist Yogurt Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake; and Donal Clark of Miller’s Seawall Grill in Galveston, Texas, whose recipe was a decadent Pecan Chocolate Ganache Brownie Cake.

To qualify for the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest, restaurants from around the country submitted an origi-nal breakfast, entrée or dessert recipe using at least one ingre-dient from General Mills’ list of eligible products. Open to foodservice operators, chefs and line cooks at independent family dining establishments, the annual contest puts neighborhood res-taurants’ dishes in the national spotlight.

Neighborhood to Nation was created to inspire culinary cre-ativity among independent res-taurants, giving operators an opportunity to experiment with high-quality and consistent products from General Mills Foodservice as well as exclu-sive access to trend information, insights and ideas to help them differentiate their menus and delight their diners.

For more information—including details on the 2nd annual Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest, to kick off in January 2016—visit www.NeighborhoodtoNation.com.

Tips For Navigating This Year’s Health

Insurance Open Enrollment Season(NAPSI)—Open enrollment is

the time of year, usually between September and December, when millions of Americans have the opportunity to select or switch their health insurance plan for the following year.

Unfortunately, just 14 per-cent of Americans understand basic health insurance concepts such as deductible, co-pay, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximum, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Health Economics.

“Choosing health care cover-age for yourself and your family is one of the most important deci-sions you will make this year,” said Tom Paul, chief consumer officer for UnitedHealthcare. “Fortunately, there are a number of useful resources people can use as they review and under-stand their options for selecting the plan that best meets their per-sonal health and budget needs.”

Beginning this fall, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that an additional 7

million people may participate in open enrollment as a result of the government’s newly cre-ated state health insurance exchanges, otherwise known as “marketplaces.” The exchanges are a component of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and are designed to give people, especially lower-income individuals and families that may qualify for federal sub-sidy assistance, another resource to purchase health insurance.

In general, most people who get health insurance at work will see little or no change in the open-enrollment process, and people on Medicare, Medicaid and other government insurance programs are also not likely affected. The vast majority of Americans—about 157 million with employer-provided cover-age, and more than 51 million Medicare beneficiaries—will continue to select a health insur-ance plan in the same way they have done in the past.

Regardless of how you access health insurance, it’s important to pay attention to the following open enrollment dates and tips:

• Employer-Provided Cover-age—Fall; specific dates depend on the employer

Most Americans receive employer-provided health ben-efits, so their open enrollment process will most likely stay the same. Large employers and some small employers typically schedule a two- to three-week period during the fall when their employees can select health ben-efits for the following year.

• Tip: Ask about wellness programs. Some health insur-ers, including UnitedHealthcare, offer incentive-based wellness programs that provide financial rewards for completing health assessments, lowering your cho-lesterol, losing weight or even signing up for a health coaching program.

• Medicare Open Enrollment Period—Oct. 15 through Dec. 7

For most Medicare benefi-ciaries, the Open Enrollment Period is their only opportunity all year to make changes to their Medicare coverage.

• Tip: Think about what’s changed regarding your health and your options. A lot can change in a year. Consider if your current plan is still meeting your health and budget needs. Medicare plans can change each year, too, so spend time review-ing the options available. Some

Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits that can help enhance your health and well-being and save you money, such as vision coverage and hearing aids. You can compare your options using the plan finder tool at www.Medicare.gov.

• Health Insurance Exch-anges—Oct. 1 through March 31

A public health insurance exchange may be a good option for people who are eligible to receive a government subsidy that lowers monthly premiums.

• Tip: Find out if you qualify for a subsidy. In general, sub-sidies are available to individu-als who meet household income requirements and who are not eligible for certain government insurance programs (such as Medicaid) or do not have access to affordable coverage through their employer.

For helpful information and resources, visit UHC.com and MedicareMadeClear.com. To learn more about health insur-ance exchanges, visit www.healthcare.gov.
