Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhang-ing tree branch-es or shrubbery blocking sun-light from reach-ing the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your towns leaf and twig pickup services.Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patch-es and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.Once you have prepared your lawn for the win-ter you can bring in any lawn tools that need re-pair and have them set and packed away for the spring!

Caramel Dipped ApplesFor a great tasting treat for your little tricksters, make caramel from scratch to coat fresh apples! To spread out the work, you can always make the caramels ahead of time and then reheat them when you are ready to dip apples. That way if you dont end up using all the caramel, theyll still be wrapped up and wont go to waste. Directions:

Grease a 12x15 inch pan.1. In a medium-size pot, combine sugar, 2. brown sugar, corn syrup, evaporated milk, whipping cream, and butter. Monitor the heat of the mixture with a candy thermometer while stirring. When the thermometer reaches 250F remove the pot from the heat.Stir in vanilla. Transfer mixture to the 3. prepared pan and let the mixture cool completely. When cooled, cut the cara-mel into small squares and wrap them in wax paper for storage. To dip apples, just unwrap the caramels and melt them in a saucepan on 4. the stove. Push a wooden craft stick into a whole apple to give it a handle, and coat the apple in caramel. Set on a sheet of wax paper and if desired decorate with sprinkles, chocolate drizzles, chopped nuts or other can-dies. Once the caramel hardens youll have a fun Halloween treat!

makes 4 to 5 dozen caramels

Ingredients: 2 cups white sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 cup corn syrup 1 cup evaporated milk 1 pint heavy whipping cream 1 cup butter 1-1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract

BUYER BEWARE!Washington State law (WAC 16-662) requires wood sellers

to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the sellers and buyers name and address and the date delivered. Make sure the invoice includes the following: Sellers name and contact information Date of purchase Price

Quantity delivered Quantity upon which the price is based Type and quality of the wood When you buy rewood write the sellers phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicleThe legal measure for rewood in Washington is the cord

or a fraction of a cord. Sellers may not legitimately use terms such as truckload, face cord, rack or pile. These terms have no legal denition and cannot, therefore, be used as a measure for the amount of rewood being sold. Only packaged wood, such as kindling or a very small bundle of rewood, may be sold by the cubic foot or a fraction of a cubic foot.A cord is 128 cubic feet.

To be sure you have a cord, stack the wood neatly by placing the wood in a line or a row, with individual pieces touching and parallel to each other. Make sure the wood is compact and has as few gaps as possible. Finally, measure the stack. If the width times the height times the length equals 128 cubic feet, you have a cord of rewood. If there is a problem, contact the seller before you burn any wood. For More Information go to: http://agr.wa.gov
