Identify five key facts you already know from your work across these units.
Although Asia is joined to the continent of Europe, it has been called a separate continent for over 2,500 years. The land mass was called Asia, meaning ‘east’. It is the world’s largest continent by both area and population.
It is made up of 49 countries and is a diverse area; this means it has a great variety, both of physical landscapes and of people from different cultures and religions.
In Unit 5 you studied Russia, the largest country in Asia, so you already know a lot about this continent.

ActivityIn this unit you will investigate the diversity of the continent. a) What does diversity mean? b) Find and name three pieces of evidence
from this lesson that show the diversity of Asia.
Dynamic changes have taken place in Asia in the past 50 years. The population has grown to over 4.3 billion people – over half of the world’s population! More than half of this population are found in just two countries: China and India, which are becoming important to the global economy.
Cities are also growing rapidly in many Asian countries. In this unit you will investigate Asia’s transformation and its changing relationship with the rest of the world.
