L AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA: 1854 (Dec 3) government notice (440x560mm) headed 'Government Camp, Ballarat' over 'Robt Rede/Resident Commissioner' and stating "Her Majesty's Forces were this Morning fired upon by a large body of evil-disposed persons of various nations, who had entrenched themselves in a Stockade on the Eureka, and some Officers and Men killed or wounded...", some faults and repairs, starkly framed which is quite appropriate for a document of such gravity.

Prospecting goldminers were required to pay hefty licence fees that generated widespread resentment. Demands for repeal of the licence fees, & for all males to have the vote, escalated. A group of 500+ miners under Peter Lalor barricaded themselves on the Eureka Diggings. This brought a brutal response from the military who attacked the Eureka Stockade on 3rd December. The fighting was intense but was over inside 20 minutes. 25 diggers & 5 soldiers were killed. However, public sentiment for the miners was so strong that none of the 13 sent to trial for treason was convicted. A Royal Commission resulted in all the miners' grievances being addressed. The male franchise was extended & Peter Lalor was elected the first parliamentarian for Ballarat. This notice is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Australian history, regarded by many as the birth of the Australian identity.

C AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA: 1854 (Dec 6) government notice on linen (395x538mm) stating "Recent events at the Mines at Ballaarat render it necessary for all true subjects of the Queen...to assist in preserving Social Order...Anarchy and confusion must ensue unless...", John Ferres Government Printer imprint at the foot, some thread-degradation at right and overall soiling/aging but quite presentable. An excellent partner for the previous lot. [Martial law for the diggings was declared on 6th December, the only time this measure has been introduced in Australia]

    Lot 58

C AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA: 1854 (Dec 11) government notice on linen (372x470mm) offering an enormous reward of £500 for the capture of the German Frederick Vern, one of the Eureka Stockade leaders who had escaped during the fighting, soiled/stained & with several holes. Despite the poor condition, this is a highly evocative artefact. [The reward was the highest posted for any of the Eureka participants. Vern was not captured but returned to Ballarat after the abortive trials. In 1856 he was imprisoned in Ballarat for 3 months for "rioting"]
