From the Pastor I'm not sure if they teach logic or critical thinking in school anymore but it is something we could surely use more of in our society. Humanity, too often, abandons reason and re-sorts to all sorts of fallacious rhetoric and ways of thinking that impede the spread of truth. When this happens people become bound to a sort of fantasy world that keeps them from living truly authentic lives. They take the truth and try to twist facts to match up to their own world view. A fine example of this comes to us in today's gospel. Jesus comes across a man who had been blind from birth. In the minds of many at the time of Jesus people only got sick on account of sin. If you got sick, lost your job, got robbed, etc. it was considered God's punishment for either your sin or that of somebody else. Hence the reason why the disciples asked if this particular man was born blind because of his own sin or that of his parents. The Pharisees too fall into this same trap when they asked the cured man what he thought of Jesus. The man answered and said to [the Pharisees], "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not lis-ten to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything." They answered and said to him, "You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out. The man's explanation for his cure didn't fit with what the Pharisees believed and so rather than use reason and allow reality to form their beliefs, they resorted to what we see happen too often in our society: they called him names and threw him out. We encounter many such distortions and logical fallacies today. There are far too many to list in this single page. Suffice it to say without the use of reason faith becomes unanchored. Without faith, reason becomes uninformed. Faith, true faith, seeks understanding. In the words of St. Augustine, "I believe, in order to understand; and I understand, the better to believe." In terms of science and the use of reason, if it is indeed the search for truth, it must be grounded in the source of truth itself, God. This from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth." "Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is car-ried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are." In the end we must understand that faith and reason go hand in hand. Our faith in God should be reasonable to us. It should make sense even if there are some things that exceed the limits of current scientific methods. One should never be afraid to probe the depths of one's faith. The search for truth is ultimately the search for God.
