WHY JOURNAL?
“ Journaling for me is my way of adding to thepool of remembrance, the accumulated stuff thatmakes up ‘ME’ in the eyes of those who know andknew me. And though it may seem a little navelgazing, those words are my way of opening up myown brain and soul and saying, with a metaphorichand wave to the future, ‘Hey, this is me!’ ”
—JASON THOMPSON
“ My extreme visual journaling practice, a uniqueprocess that I developed and teach internationally, comes from a desire to know my deep and tendershadow places, to give them voice, and to heal ortransform them. My journal is the container, soulhome, or witness protection program, not someproving ground. My pages are a place of safekeeping and honor where I transform my inner
enemies into allies; where my weaknesses becomestrengths. Like a soul map, my pages allow me tosee more clearly and more deeply the path to thereal me. I have been saving my life in an extremejournal since 1987, page after page, book afterbook.”
—JULIANA COLES
“ To bridge the often enormous gap between brainand canvas. It’s that in-between space where I amstill creative, but I don’t have to commit to a bigpiece or a finished product. Journaling gives mepermission to be free, to use scraps of what’s lyingon my workspace, to play with pattern, to not finisha page and not feel bad. It’s a reflection of who Iam during that moment. Time passes and journalingis an incredible way to look back and see who youwere and who you’ve become. (P.S. Dateeverything—even if you think it’s not important!)”
—MINDY CARPENTER, SEPTEMBER 4, 2007
“ Because it just feels good to doodle and write
some things down. It’s a release of sorts. Because Ilove pens and playing with them. To figure outwhat I want to bring into my life and dream abouthow it could come about. To organize my thoughts, especially of things I need to do; a pretty to-do list.Because it’s an ongoing way to play in art—playing in a way that doesn’t focus on results.”
—PAM GARRISON
“ Art journaling is an inner dialogue with myinnermost self—a dialogue that keeps me true tomyself and keeps me on my toes. As artists, we areconstantly having this same inner dialogue throughvisual means. Wasn’t it Picasso that said paintingis just another way of keeping a diary? I find thatpainting and keeping a journal combine the twosides of me—I am a visual person, but I also lovethe written word. And they both are vehiclesthrough which my perspective of the world and myexperiences get a voice.”
—BRIDGETTE GUERZON MILLS
“ If people knew just how much their life couldchange for the better, they’d all be racing down tothe store to pick out a nice-looking journal andwould begin. You don’t know until you just try it,and see for yourself. You have to allow yourself toget lost in the process. You have to allow yourselfto play and relax your mind by letting it spill outonto your pages. You have to give yourselfpermission that the pages can be any thing youwant them to be—little scribbles, a full blown-outcolorful mess, a whole page of written words—anything and everything goes. Then, take a look atwhat you did. You will learn so much more aboutyourself than you think you know. Also, journalsare great ways of manifesting dreams and goals. Ihave now learned that things I actually write in myjournal have about a 90 percent chance of reallyhappening. When the world finally realizes howpowerful a journal can be, watch out!”
—TEESHA MOORE
“ Perhaps it would be better to ask, ‘Why jump
rope?’ or ‘Why sing in the shower?’ Some things inlife intuitively bring us joy, and we’re drawn tothem, often, without understanding why. It wouldbe easy to say we journal because it makes ushappy, or because it’s therapeutic, but it’ssomething so much more primal than that. Deepdown, at our very core, we’re all creative people. And in a world that values profit margins over allelse, journaling has become the voice of theindividual … a sanctuary of creative expression.”
—SOMEGUY
INTRODUCTION
What is so thrilling about looking intothe pages of someone’s art journal, goingbeyond the covers to find a curious gathering ofthoughts, observations, random notes, andsketches? Maybe it’s the voyeuristic glimpse intosuch intimate territory; the ideas, the dreams, thetangible layers of ink and color and ephemera. Theturn of each page indulges us with revealingsecrets and fresh insights.
And, what makes some of us dare to share thesepages, to expose ourselves? Maybe it is theknowledge that like-minded individuals will “getit” or “get us.” Showing our journals is a true actof sharing ourselves.
If you have never kept an art journal, theprospect of doing so may seem intimidating, but thebeauty of keeping a journal is that you don’t everhave to share it. It can be a unique and privateplace in your life for personal exploration.
Journaling may allow you to express yourself in away you never thought possible and can helpexpand your artistic skills and confidence.
After sending out our initial call for entries forthis book, pages poured in from not only the UnitedStates, but Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands,India, Japan, Colombia, Israel, Brazil, Ireland,Iceland, and Lebanon. Our invitation requestedpages in particular categories: sketched ordoodled, mixed-media, fabric-based,collaborative, graphic and text-based, pages usingfound materials, as well as raw or extremejournals. Of course, we discovered that many ofthese pages cross several categories. Because ofthis we decided not to make arbitrary choices anddivide the book into strictly defined sections. Thepages flow through the gallery like one long roadpaved with inspiration.
After receiving submissions from all over theworld, I feel like part of a global community.Hundreds of artists were willing to sharethemselves through their pages. These art journalsmay contain words in different languages, but they
all speak to each of us. And one thing I know afterworking on this project: we are all artists, artistes,künstlers, artistas, artisti, or however you maypronounce it in your part of the world.
Keep journaling,
PROMPTS TO GET YOUPUMPED
You open your journal to a freshblank page and think, “OK, here I go!” Butnothing happens. Suddenly, the white surfacestaring back at you seems to mock you, almosttelling you that you won’t be able to fill the pageand make a worthwhile mark. Relax. It’s easy toget hung up when beginning a page. Even journalartists who have been journaling for a while hitsnags. Sometimes you just need a little nudge. Some of the journal artists who contributed pagesto this book offer starting suggestions and promptsa-plenty. Consider this a list of recipes to get youcooking in your journal:
Ways to Start a Page• Write down one thing you can do today to make
a difference.
• Open a dictionary or a book, point at a word orphrase, and use it to launch a page.
• Ponder an inspiring quote.• Find a magazine photograph of a person you
don’t know, and conjure up a story about his orher life.
• Use kids art supplies such as crayons, goldstars, ruled paper.
• Start writing or sketching a fantasy of somethingyou would like to see happen in your life.
• Make a diagram of the house you grewup in.• Be inspired by dreams from the night before.• Describe your mood.• List some things that inspire you.• Describe your dream art studio.
Try Collage• Have you got pages in your journal you’re not
crazy about? Why not glue bits of differentpapers on top of them, and let what isunderneath peek through here and there, adding
visual intrigue. Add paint to create more layers.
Try Lists• Write a list of creative tasks that need to be
done, an artist’s to-do list.• List books you want to read.• List people you saw today.• List your top ten “desert island” songs.
Use a TriggerWhen you get stuck for a starting point, find amagazine. Any kind will do, but having a varietyon hand is good. Thumb through the magazines, andscan the headlines for ads or articles. Here aresome examples:• “Get a Move On”
Make lists of things you have to do for the dayor for the week.
• “Best Things in Life”Reflect on things you value or enjoy in life.
• “What the Perfect Day Does For Your Spirit”
Write about a day that was perfect or your ideaof the perfect day.
• “The World Will Not Fall Apart in MyAbsence”Focus on things you want to do or accomplishin your life, and write out personal goals.
• “The Joy Is in the Journey”Write about a happy milestone in your life andhow it made you feel, for example, the birth ofa child, a personal accomplishment or award,or your marriage.
Ask and Answer Questions• How do you feel when you see signs of a new
season emerging?• What rituals or traditions do you keep through
the year?• How do daily tasks and common objects make
you feel and why?• What was good about today?• Why is this day important?
• What should you note now, that in a year youwill enjoy remembering?
• What is a little nostalgic moment in your life?• Where were you ten years ago? Where will you
be ten years from now?• What is your favorite color palette?• What are you grateful for?• Who is your hero?• Who needs good thoughts and energy sent their
way?
Fill in the BlankIn five years I’d love to be _________In two years I’d love to be ________Tomorrow I’d love to be ________People say I am ________I wish I were ________I am happy when I am ________
