1000 German words you need to learn

Why did I create this exercise book?

German is the second foreign language after English that I decided to bring to fluency.

I prefer to learn languages by combining self-study and learning with a tutor. In the

very beginning I explored all the print and digital resources for German learners

available online and in the book shops. I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for -

many resources that I had when I was learning English were simply not available for

German.

One such resource was an effective and engaging vocabulary exercise book. I scoured

Amazon and bookstores in Berlin trying to find something like that. I could find

frequency dictionaries, some complicated exercise books that would require a

mountain of patience to tackle, and lots of resources for in-class learning. But nothing

that satisfied my expectations.

As I reached the B2/C1 level, I realized that there must be thousands of German

learners who are facing a similar problem. That’s why I created this exercise book.

Something I wish I had when I was working hard to master advanced German

vocabulary and boost my German skills.

Who is this book for?

This book is ideal for you if you already know the basics. On the CEFR scale, that

would be A2-B2 learners. I skipped the basic vocabulary you usually pick up anyway,

but focused on the vocabulary that you’re so desperately missing when trying to

express yourself in daily life and business.

• you have at least finished your A1 level and now trying to bring your

conversational German to the next level

• you want to learn 1000 practical German words in a bite-sized fashion with a

particular focus on everyday vocabulary and business German

• you are willing to study for 5-10 minutes a day

1000 German words you need to learn

• you like learning through self-study fun exercises

• you are willing to do some additional research such as looking up words in a

dictionary (if you don’t understand something)

How is this book organized?

The book is has two sections.

The first section includes the exercises and vocabulary you’ll learn. 1000 German

words and bonus 200 phrases split by days. Each day, you’ll discover 5 new words

and work through the exercises to understand the contextual use of these words.

The book comes with a built-in Spaced Repetition system. As you progress, you’ll

notice that these words keep popping up again to help you reinforce what you

learned.

Each day is broken down into 4 parts:

• The first part introduces you to the words and helps you understand their

meaning though usage examples. No translations at this step - you’ll try to guess

the word’s meaning from the context.

• The second part presents 5 sentences with missing words. Based on the

context, try to match the new words you discovered above and fill in the blanks.

You can check if you were correct by looking up the answer keys on page 12..

• The third part lets you match the English translation with the word. If you

find the first two sections challenging, a small hack is to review the third section

before doing them.

• The fourth part is a daily phrase - it’s a bonus idiom or a collocation that

you’ll hear every day.

The second section of the book is the answer keys. You’ll need this section to

double-check if your answers. You can look up the correct answers starting on the

page 12.

Practice makes perfect

The exercises are designed in a way that the words you learn in one place are

usually used again somewhere else. That way you can practice the words you

already learned. Consider it a built-in Spaced Repetition system.

One way to complement your learning would be to create flashcards for all the new

words. Carry your flashcards with you at all times and review them at least once a

day. Discard the words you confidently remember.

If you don’t want to create flashcards by hand, I created an app that automates the

process of practicing new vocabulary.

We built a simple, but extremely effective app for iOS and Android to practice

German words - the kwiko app. It’s free of charge. Here is how you could

incorporate it into your daily learning routine:

1. Study 5 new words

2. Do the exercises

3. Translate any word you don’t understand

4. When you are done, spend 2 minutes to save all your new vocabulary into the

app

5. kwiko will schedule regular practice sessions for each word automatically for

you.
