Thefollowinghavethemeritofbeingcheaperandmore healthythancommontea,whiletheappearance isnearly the same :Theyoungleavesof the peaplant,ortheyoungleavesand flowersofthestrawberry,orthefirst leavesofthe currant bush,or the herd spring grass(An-tltnxanthum Odbratum),orthe leavesof speedwell,wild ger-mander,syringia or mockorange,purple spiked willow herb,sweet brier,cherry tree, sloe, &c. The above should bedriedontinintheshade,and afterwardsroundedupwithalittle cal-cined magnesia to impart a bloom. Black currant leaves andgoodchopped meadowhaysimilarlytreated,makegoodteas.Napoleon'sCampSauce.Oldstrongbeer 2qts., whitewine1 qt.,anchovies4oz.; mix;boilforten minutes,remove itfromthe fire,andaddofpeeledshalotes 3oz.,mace, nutmeg, ginger and black pepper1-2oz.each; macerateforfourteendaysandbottle.Shaving Soap.Take 41-2lbs.white bar soap, 1 qt. rainwater, 1 gill beef'sgalland1gillspiritsof turpentine. Cutthesoap thinandboilfiveminutes. Stir whileboiling,andcolor with1-2oz.vermil-ion; scent withoilof rose or almonds. Fifty cents worth ofmaterialwill makesixdollarsworthofsoap.SoapwithoutLyeorGrease.Inacleanpotput1-2lb.home-madehardor mushsoap,and1-2lb. salsoda,and5pintssoft water. Boilthemixturefifteen. minutes,andyouwillhave5lbs.goodsoapfor71-2cents.HardSoap.Take5lbs.hardsoap,or7lbs. softsoap,4lbs. salsoda,2oz.boraxand1 oz.hartshorn; boilonequarterofanhourwith22qts.water; addtoharden1-2lb. rosin.SoftSoapwithoutLye.Mix10lbs.potashin10gals,warmwaterover night; inthemorningboil it, adding6lbs.grease; thenput all ina barrel,adding15gals,water. Usesoftwateronly.10 Recipes and Disclosure*FrenchPatentMustard.Flourof mustard8lbs.,wheatflour2lbs.,baysalt 2lbs., cay-ennepepper3oz.,vinegartomix."WindsorSoap.White soap14lbs., oil caraway3oz.,essence musk1 oz., oiloriganum 1-2oz., oil lavender and essence bergamot, each1-4oz.,finelypowderedcassia8oz. Reduce with waterandformintocakes.ArtificialLemonSyrup.Pale sugar1 1-2lbs, tartaric acid,or citric acid is best,1oz.,(moreor less),hotwater1gal., oil lemon 1 dr.,mixwell inaclosevessel,andfrequentlyshakeforoneday.CandiedLemonPeel.Takelemon peelsandboiltheminsyrup,thentakethemoutanddry.PickledOnions.Choose small round onions,removethe skins,steeptheminstrong brineforaweekina stone vessel,pour it oft' and heattill itboils,thenpourit ontheonionsboilinghot; aftertwenty-four hours,drain ona sieve,then put them in bottles, fill upoverthem with strong spiced vinegar boiling hot,corkdownimmediatelyand waxover thecork. Ina similar manner arepickled cucumbers, mushrooms,cauliflowers, samphires,peas,beans,green gooseberries, walnuts, red cabbage,(without saltwithcoldvinegar). Observethatthe softandmoredelicate ar-ticlesdonot requiresolong soaking inthe brine asthe harderand coarser kinds,andmaybe often keptby simply pouringverystrongpicklingvinegaronthemwithouttheapplicationofheat. Forpeaches,selectripebutnotsoftones,rubwithadrycloth,putfourcloves freefromtheirheadsineachlargepeach,andtwoin small ones; to 1 gal. vinegar put6lbs.goodbrownsugar,putthepeachesina jarandputthevinegar(dilutedwithwateriftoostrong) and sugar in a preserving kettle over thefire, boilandskimit,pourit boilinghotoverthepeaches,cover-ingthem closely; repeat the operation three times, then sealthemtightlyincansorbottles.For Merchants,Manufacturers, &c.11ToRestore InjuredMeat.Whenthe brine sours ortaints the meat,pour it oft", boil it,skimitwell,then pour it back again outhe meat boiling hot;this will restore it evenwhenmuch injured. Flyblown meatcanbecompletelyrestoredbyimmersingit forafewhours inavesselcontaininga small quantity ofbeer,butit will taintandimpartaputridsmelltotheliquor. Freshmeat,hams,fish,&c.,canbepreservedforan indefinitelengthof timewithoutsalt,byalightapplicationot pyroligneousacidappliedwithabrush; itimpartsafinesmokyflavortothemeatandis an effectual pre-servative againstits loss.ToRestoreRancidButter.Use1pintwater toeachlb. butter,previously adding20grs.chlorideof limetoeachpintofwater,washthebutter well inthis mixture, afterwards re-wash in cold water,and salt. Ormeltthe butter ina waterbath withanimal charcoal,coarselypowderedandpreviouslywellsiftedtofree itfrom dust; skim,removeandstrainthroughflannel,thensalt.Grindstonesfrom.CommonSand.River sand30 lbs., shellac10 parts, powdered glass2 parts;meltinanironpot,andcastintomoulds.Red Ink.Inanoz. phialput1teaspoonfulofaqua ammonia,gum ara-bicsizeoftwo orthree peas,and6grs. ofNo.40 carmine; fillupwithsoftwater,andit is soonreadyforuse.BlackCopyingInkor "WritingFluid.Take 2 gals, rain water andput into it gumarabic1-4lb.,brown sugar1-4lb., clean copperas1-4lb., powdered nutgalls3-4lb.; mixand shake occasionally fortendays,and strain; ifneededsooner,let it stand inanironkettleuntilthestrengthisobtained. Thisinkwill standthe actionofthe atmosphereforcenturies,ifrequired.LiquidGlueorMucilage.Finecleanglueormucilage 1 lb., gumarabicor gumacacia1012 Recipes and Disclosuresoz.,waterI quart; meltbyheatin aglue kettleorwater bath;whenentirelymeltedaddslowly10oz.strongnitricacid, .set oft"tocool,thenbottle,addingacoupleof clovestoeachbottle.ToPreserveMeat.Take1 lb. black pepper andgrind it fine, for one bbl. of200lbs.pork,and sprinkleoneachlayerofthe meat till it is quitebrown,then putonthe salt as usual; it helps to preserve themeat,andaddsgreatlytothesmellandflavorofit.AmericanCommercial"WritingInk.Take 1-4lb. extract logwood to1gal. clean soft water; heattoaboilingpointinaperfectlycleanironkettle, skimwell,stir,add90grs.bichromateofpotash,15grs. ofprussiate ofpotash,dissolveinahalf pintofhotwater; thenstirforthreeminutes,takeoff, straintwicethroughsheetingcloth.ToRestoreMustyFlour.Carbonate ofmagnesia 3lbs., flour 7G0 lbs.; mix. This im-provesbadflour,makesitkeeplonger,and causesit to becomemorewholesome,producinglighterandbetterbreadthanwhenalumis used.AdamantineCandlesfrom.Tallow.Melttogether10oz.muttontallow,camphor1-4oz.,beeswax4oz.,alumtwooz. Candlesmadeof thesematerialsare veryhardanddurable,andburnwithaclearandsteadylight.ToCureButter.Take2parts best common salt, 1 partloaf sugar,1part salt-petre,mix completely; to each lb. of butteradd one ounce ofthismixture,workin wellandcloseupsecurely foruse. Thisis the best knownprocess for preserving butter; itwill keepgoodfortwoyearsif keptwellcoveredfromtheair; donot useitforthreeweeksafterputtingdown.To salt butter in the commonway,use 1to 2oz.commonsalttoeachlb.of butter,accordingtothelengthof timerequiredtokeepit. Whileretailing outof akegof saltbutterkeepthesurfacewellcoveredwithsalt brine asa preservative. Buttermaybepreserved without saltfor alongtime by adding1oz.honeytoeachlb. ofbutter; mixwell.For Druggists and Perfumers. 13Drifts' and Perfumers' Department.Cod-Liver Oil.As usually prepared,it is nothing moreorless than cod oilclarified,bywhichprocessit is infactdeprivedinagreatmeas-ureofits virtue. Codoilcanbe purchasedfromanywholesaleoil dealer forone-thirtieth partof the price ofcod-liveroilasusuallysold,andit iseasytoclarify it. Dealersmight turnthisinformation togood account. Tomake itmorepalatable anddigestible,put1 oz. finetablesalttoeachquartbottle.Barren'sIndianLiniment.Alchohol 1 qt., tinctureof capsicum 1 oz., oils of origanum,sassafras, pennyroyal and hemlock, each1-2oz.; mix. Morethan$70,000hasbeencleared bythesaleof thismedicinedur-ingthelasttwelveyearsintheWesternStates.IndiaCholagogue.Quinine20 grs., peruvian bark pulverized 1 oz., sulphuricacid15drops,or1 scrupleoftartaricacid is best,brandy1gill;watertomake1pint. Dose,5teaspoonsful everytwohoursintheabsenceoffeveranexcellentremedy.Febrifuge"Wine.Quinine 25grs.,water 1 pt.,sulphuric acid15 drops, Epsomsalts2 oz.,color withtincture ofred sanders. Dose, a wine-glass fullthreetimesperday.Holloway'sOintmentand Pills.Ointment.Butter 12oz.,beeswax4oz.,yellow resin 3oz.,melt,addvinegarof cantharides1 oz.,evaporateandadd Cana-dabalsam1oz., oilmace1-2 dr.,balsamPeru15drops.14 Recipes and DisclosuresPills.Aloes 4 parts, myrrh,jalapandginger, each2 parts,mucilagetomix.Positive CuroforGonorrhoea.Liquorofpotass1-2 oz., bitter apple1-2oz., spirits of sweetnitre1-2oz.,balsam copaiba1-2 oz., bestgum1-4oz. Touse,mixwithpeppermintwater; take1-2teaspoonful three timesaday. Mix these well together. Apply with alinenragtwiceaday,untiltheobjectis effected.GreenMountainSalve.Forrheumatism,burns,painsinthe backorside, &c. Takeresin2lbs.,burgundy pitch1-4lb., beeswax1-4lb.,mutton tal-low1-4lb. ; meltslowly; whennottoo warmaddoilhemlock1oz.,balsamfir 1 oz., oil origanum1 oz., oilred cedar1 oz.,Ve-niceturpentine1 oz.,oilwormwood1 oz.,verdigris1-2oz. Theverdigris must be finely pulverized and mixedwiththe oils,then add as above andwork in cold water like wax,till coldenoughtoroll; rollsfive inches long,oneinchindiameter, sellfor25cents. SuperiortoPelegWhite'sSalve.PositiveCureforAguewithoutQuinine.Peruvian bark2oz.,wildcherrytree bark1 oz.,cinnamon 1dr.,capsicum1teaspoonful,sulphur1 oz.,portwine2qts. ; letit standtwo days. Buyyour peruvian bark and pulverize ityourself, as it is often adulterated otherwise. Fora grownperson20to40drops,threeorfour times a day. Forchildren 4 to (3 drops; administer in alittlewarmminttea,inwhichismixedasmuchpreparedchalkas will lie on the pointof ateaspoon. This isthe bestknowcurefordysentery.British Oil.Oilsofturpentine and linseed,each 8oz., oils ofamberandjuniper,each 4oz.,Barbadoes tar 3 oz.,seneca oil 1oz.; mix.Thisis amostvaluable applicationforsoresof allkinds.GoldenTincture.Alchohol 1 oz., sulphuric ether 1 oz., laudanum 1 oz.; mix.ThisisHuffman'sanodyne. Dose,from3to30drops,accordingtocircumstances.Vermifugefor'Worms.Oilofturpentine1 lb., castoroil5lbs.Black Salve.Sweetoilandlinseedoil,each1oz. and1oz. redlead,pulver-ized. Put allinto aniron dish overa moderate tire, stir con-stantly until you can draw your finger overadropof itonaboard, when a little cool, without sticking,when it is done.Spreadonaclothandapplyasother salve.Liquid Opodeldoc.Warmbrandy1 qt., addto it gumcamphor1 oz., salamoniae1-4 oz., oils origanumandrosemary, each 1-2oz., oil worm-wood1-4oz.: whentheoils aredissolved,add6oz. softsoap.'Vegetable Substitute for Crlomel.Jalap1 oz.,senna2oz.,peppermint1 oz.,alittle cinnamonitdesired,allpulverized and sifted through gauze. Dose,1tea-16 Recipes and Disclosuresspoonfulintwoorthreespoonfulsof hot water, and agoodlumpwhite sugar; whencool,drink all. Tobe taken fastinginthemorning; drink gruel freely; if it does not operate in threehours,repeatonehalfthequantity; useinsteadofcalomel.CamphorIce.Spermaceti11-2oz., gumcamphor3-4oz., oil sweet almonds4teaspoonfulls,set onastoveinanearthendishtill dissolved,heat just enough tomeltit.
