The fire department executive has asked the TNRD to consider the adoption of a pro- posed financial contribution to the 70 Mile House Fire Protection Service If approved, the 139 property owners with- in the service area will provide annual tax funding – to a maximum of $15,000 – as a contribution to the cost of providing fire protection service in 70 Mile House. FAMOUS BIRTHDAYS

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Your impulsive nature is apparent this week, Aries. While this nature has often served you well, carefully consider all angles before making any big decisions.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, the goal this week is to find a happy medium where you can help others but remain true to yourself. It may take a little juggling, but you can handle it.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, although you are initially willing to go along with the groups plans, in the long run you want to set off in your own direction. A few stragglers may join you.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, professional obligations may prevent you from spending time with loved ones, but only if you let them. Let higher-ups know where your priorities lie.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, share your emotions with a friend, especially if the friendship is not going in the direction you had hoped. Keep the lines of communication open at all times.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, you may think your intentions are obvious to others, but sometimes you send mixed signals. You may have to be more concise to achieve your desired results.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Take the high road, Libra. Leading by example has always been your forte, and taking the high road now is a great example to set for those around you.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22It can be quite difficult to keep your cool when you are feeling emotional, Scorpio. Channel any nervous energy you have into a productive project this week.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you are on a quest for a deep connection. You will not be content with mere friendship, but desire something that is more intimate and meaningful.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20You are in high demand this week, Capricorn. You have the ability to get things done when others struggle with similar tasks. Keep up the good work.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, you just may find yourself on shaky ground while juggling multiple responsibilities this week. Dont let the stress of this juggling act overwhelm you.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, you find yourself face-to-face with your biggest fears this week. Draw on your inner strength and you will conquer any obstacle.

HOW TO PLAy:Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: you must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.

opportunity to purchase one card to better your hand for a chance to win a prize. This is not a fastest is bestest ride.

Including the ride and lunch, it costs $15 for adults, $10 for riders 10 years and younger, and $5 for just lunch.

McKie notes folks have to bring their own ATVs and need to be 16 years old and hold a valid drivers licence, or they can ride with someone on a legal two-person ATV.

At 8 p.m., folks can show up at the club-house for a dance and snacks with live music provided by Jack Keough and Friends.

McKie says the ride, lunch, open house and dance is to let folks know about the 91 kilometres of tenured multi-use (snowmobile and ATV) trails that the club maintains and the fun members have at the clubhouse.

Were members of the ABC Snowmobile

Association and we have a trail agreement with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, and part of the agree-ment is to patrol the trails all year round. We do a yearly report to the ministry.

Noting they cleaned the trees off the 25-km

trail on June 22 in about four hours, McKie says the ride is not difficult and would be classed as an easy to intermediate ride.

For more information on the ride and dance or on the club go to www.greenlakesnowmobile club.ca, or call Peter at 250-456-6806.

Fire destroyed a large outbuilding at a home on Highway 97 near Ogden Road in Lac la Hache early on June 17.

Lac la Hache Volunteer Fire Department chief Terry Murphy says the call came in at 3:30 a.m., and crews found the auxiliary building was fully engulfed upon their arrival.

A large group of fire-fighters responding from two departments fought to ensure the fire, which was blazing in an old barn that also for-merly housed a chicken coop and greenhouse, did not spread to the house or other struc-tures, he notes.

Murphy notes a total of 13 Lac la Hache mem-bers with four trucks responded to battle the blaze, along with mutu-al aid provided by four members and two water tenders from the 108 Mile Ranch Volunteer

    Fire Department.We just protected the

exposures, and what we call darkened it down [to eliminate the biggest flames] and sprayed it until it was out.

There was no loss of chickens and no loss of livestock, or anything like that.

While it is not known what started the fire, the property owner told him the barn structure was empty at the time

and had a light left turned on with an elec-trical cord running out to it, he explains.

Murphy says the fire is not considered suspi-cious and the cause is not under further inves-tigation.

Nobody was hurt, it went fine and we cleared the scene at 6 a.m. and were back at the hall by 6:30 a.m.

Noting all members wore breathing appara-

tus because the scene was quite smoky, the fire chief adds he had BC Ambulance Service on scene for rehabilita-tion purposes, in case any of the crew had needed treatment for inhalation or injury.

The British Columbia legislature adjourned for the summer with Opposition NDP MLAs battling to the end against legislation to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones.

The B.C. Liberal government used its majority to cut off debate and pass the bill, despite days of demands to with-draw it and complete promised consultation with farmers around the province.

Independent MLAs Andrew Weaver and Vikki Huntington joined NDP critics in denouncing the move to ease restrictions on secondary farm-land uses in the North, Kootenay and Cariboo zones. Another target of criticism was the move to formalize the six local Agricultural Land Commission panels to make decisions on exclusions and permit-ted uses.

Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald accused the government of adding social and economic considerations to farm-land as a pretext to undermine the com-missions independence.

We are talking about important agri-cultural areas that will now be open to exclu-sions, that decision being made by a bunch of B.C. Liberal political hacks on criteria that are totally nebulous to the extend that theres

even a provision to add whatever else the cabinet wants to add, Macdonald said.

It could be econom-ic. It could be social. It could be anything.

Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick pointed to amendments made to the bill in response to criticism that empha-size that the ALC is independent and its top priority remains to preserve productive farmland.

Letnick used the example of a Peace River region farmer who was prevented from parking gas indus-try trucks on his land during winter to earn extra money.

We, as a govern-ment, believe that

theres an opportunity in some parts of the province where there is less pressure on agri-cultural land to give farmers some freedom in making sure they can be successful on that land.

NDP Leader John Horgan said a leaked 2012 e-mail exchange between Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm suggests a vendetta against the ALC and a desire to weaken it for political gain.

Pimm, who was replaced as agriculture minister as he under-goes cancer surgery, issued an apology this week for his comments in the e-mail.

Premier Christy Clark said the changes do not affect the Okanagan, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island zones, which generate 85 per cent of B.C.s farm income.

    We are making

it economic in areas with a shorter grow-ing season, with less productive farmland, to be able to continue to make land valuable enough that they will pass it down to another family.

  • It will not constitute a land tax increase for many living in 70 Mile because of our home-owners grants, etc.

The amount being petitioned is not enough to negate the neces-sity of fundraising, but it will provide a stable base so we can move forward with bring-ing the department up to standards, Moseley says.

    The average pro-

posed tax increase would be around $69 only $19 per year more than the dues paid this year. The savings in insurance once we get certified will probably more than offset the tax increase.

If the petition passes, it will not take effect until next year, she explains, so starting in September, we will once again be request-ing dues to be paid for the July 2014-June 30, 2015 year.

South Green Lake resident Linda Cox has won groceries for a year (worth $5,200) at Save-On-Foods in 100 Mile House on June 18.

Cox says she is thrilled to have won.

It is just unreal. I cant believe it. We shop here all the time.

After pulling out a Scan & Win contest sheet from the Cariboo Connector containing a barcode for the contest, Cox explains she hand-ed it over to be scanned at the till with her regu-lar shopping.

When the excited cashier told her she was

a winner one of just three so far across the province Cox says she

froze stiff with shock. Then some of the

staff came over and said thats wonderful and I was still just standing there.

100 Mile House store manager Craig Lee says the company-wide

contest is three weeks into its four-week span, and Cox is one of three lucky winners awarded across all its stores.

However, any Save-On-Foods store including those who have had winners can still scan groceries for a year for prizes until the contest closes on June 26.

The store manager notes he is very pleased to have identified a win-ner amongst his local customers.

We are lucky enough to have one of the win-ners its so awesome.

Cox says she never wins prizes at anything, so this was a big sur-prise that she credits somewhat to her com-munity.

I just knew we had to move up to the Cariboo! We just relo-cated to 70 Mile House a year ago.

  • Alexas Team mem-bers, including Const. Alex Hutt based in 100 Mile House, have deliv-ered on their promise to the family of Alexa Middelaer, and other families that have lost loved ones to drinking driving, by significantly reducing the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths in British Columbia.

In recognition of their diligence and success enforcing the impaired driving laws of this province, ICBC, the Justice Institute of BC and the Middelaer family honoured the 313 officers who form the 2013 Alexas Team at four events held in Surrey, Greater Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George.

In 2010, The Middelaer family chal-lenged the RCMP, Municipal police offi-cers, and the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General of British Columbia to reduce the number of deaths caused by alcohol impaired driving by 35 per cent by the end of

2013, the year Alexa would have turned 10 years old.

The 52 per cent decrease in alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths announced by the Ministry of Justice in February, repre-sents 190 lives saved. Drinking and driving fatalities have dropped significantly over the past three years and

Alexas Team members were responsible for almost 50 per cent of the impaired driving enforcement in B.C. in 2013.
