Think about it:

Our heart follows our

treasure.

Think About it:

Tomorrow may not come so do not add

the extra stress to the present day.

Jesus begins by educating us on our retirement plan. He teaches us not to lay up treasure here on earth. Treasure is a great quantity of anything collected or hoarded for future use. It is something extremely valued. Notice the three enemies to treasure on earth. Moths eat up things, rust makes things deteriorate and useless, and thieves take it away completely. Jesus emphasizes long term investing. The treasure here on earth is only temporal and is short term investing What are some ways we can store up treasures on earth? Read Matthew 19:21, Luke 12:33, and I Timothy 6:17-19. We store up treasure by following the teachings of Christ and doing them in the right

motive. That is what Matthew chapters five and six are all about. Our heart follows our treasure and not vice-versa. Where we are storing and investing in this world draws our heart in that direction and captures our heart’s full attention.

Read Matthew 6:23-24. We can place our treasure here on earth or in heaven. It is either in this world or in God. Jesus begins to illustrate and warn against a divided heart. First He uses our eyes as an illustration. The eye is a gate that lets things into our body. What we are letting in our eye is what will fill our entire body. It cannot be half light and half darkness. We cannot have half treasure on earth and half in heaven. Our heart will be directed to one or the other. The Bible talks about the lust of the eye in

of this life. He reminds us not to be anxious and stressed about the physical things of life. Verse twenty-seven tells us that being anxious or stressed will not change anything. God will provide the necessities of life. He has promised to provide clothing and food. He tells us what we should seek first and foremost. Verse thirty-three says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Our treasure should be focused on God, His kingdom, and living righteous. Living righteous means that we are living out the teaching of God’s Word. The promise for doing this is God promises to provide for our necessities. This promise should make us relax and focus on storing up things in heaven. Where is your treasure? Take an inventory of your life and write down where all your treasure is.

Your Thoughts

Read Matthew 6:25-34. We focus so much on the temporal things of this earth. Why? This is what we can see physically. It takes faith to lay up treasures in heaven. Remember, where our treasure is dictates where out heart will be. If we are focused on treasures here on earth where will our heart be? Jesus tells us not to focus on the material things

YOUR TREASURE SHOULD BE TOWARDS GOD

YOUR TREASURE DICTATES YOUR HEART

Being a Doer of the Word

YOU CANNOT HAVE TREASURE IN BOTH PLACES

I John 2:16. This is the eye seeing something which makes us want it and in turn we do whatever it takes until we get it. Secondly, Jesus says we cannot serve two masters. This is God and money. Serve means to be a slave to or be in bondage to. We cannot be aligned and faithful to two sides. Read James 1:8, 4:4, I John 2:15-17, I Timothy 6:10.
