Road rage
Fall foliage
Aggressive driving on the rise across the U.S.
By Jill Fergus It’s that time of the year again – fall foliage season! Of course,
one of the best ways to see the beautiful hues of autumn is to take a leaf-peeping road trip. But this year, why not customize it to include your specifi c interests? Whether you’re a foodie or a thrill-seeker, a museum lover or looking for a family-friendly getaway, there’s a fabulous trip out there with your name on it. Here are some fall foliage road trip suggestions throughout the Northeast.
CULINARYHudson Valley, New York
The Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, N.Y., is one of the country’s top culinary schools. After a tour of the cam-pus – be sure to visit its terrace offering sweeping Hudson River views – dine in one of its renowned restaurants such as the farm-to-table American Bounty and the modern French Bocuse Restaurant . And throughout the Hudson Valley, you can visit farmers markets to buy local produce as well as family-owned orchards, where you can pick your own apples (and don’t forget the cider doughnuts!).
Dine and stay: Aside from fi ne dining restaurants, the CIA also has a few casual lunch spots including the Apple Pie Bakery

Nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed signifi cant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the past year, according to a new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffi c Safety.
The foundation also found that 7 percent of U.S. drivers engaged in extreme examples of road rage – including purposefully ramming other vehicles or getting out of their cars to confront other drivers – within the past year.
Drivers living in the Northeast were signifi cantly more likely to yell, honk or gesture angrily than people living in other parts of the country. Drivers in the Northeast were also 30 percent more likely to have made an angry gesture than drivers in other parts of the country.
“Inconsiderate driving, heavy traffi c and the daily stresses of life can transform minor frustrations into dangerous road rage,” said Sandra Marsian, vice presi-dent of membership, travel and marketing at AAA Pio-neer Valley. “Far too many drivers are losing themselves in the heat of the moment and lashing out in ways that could turn deadly.”
A signifi cant percentage of U.S. drivers reported en-gaging in angry and aggressive behaviors over the past year, according to study estimates.
• 51 percent: purposefully tailgating. • 47 percent: yelling at another driver. • 45 percent: honking to show annoyance or anger. • 33 percent: making angry gestures. • 24 percent: trying to block another vehicle from
changing lanes.

By George MorseState capitals are easy options for adding a couple of hours of
sightseeing to just about any road trip. Capitals and surrounding attractions provide awesome
glimpses into history, and statehouses, most of which offer guided or self-guided tours, make excellent backdrops for vaca-tion selfi es.
Here are 10 state capitals within a day’s drive that are worth checking out.
1. Albany, N.Y.: The New York State Capitol is a striking facility nestled within the Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza . The 10-building complex houses the New York State Museum, Library and Archives, a performance center, a public art collection and an observation deck on the 42nd fl oor of Corning Tower. The USS Slater, a World War II-era destroy-er escort converted into a museum, is a short drive away.
2. Annapolis, Md.: Take a tour of the U.S. Naval Academy before visiting the capitol , the nation’s oldest in continu-ous use. Be sure to budget time to take in the city’s fabulous architecture, which spans more than a dozen styles. Other popular historic attractions include the Hammond-Harwood House, a 19th century colonial estate, and the William Paca

2 AAA PIONEER VALLEY | SEPTEMBER 2016
This year, we’ve watched with increasing concern as the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration reported that traffi c fatalities are on the rise throughout the country.
In July, NHTSA estimated that the fi nal number of fatali-ties in 2015 will total around 35,200 people, an increase of 7.7 percent over the 32,675 fatalities in 2014. And while that is well below the more than 40,000 fatalities a decade ago, 2015’s numbers will still represent the highest count since 2008.
We take particular notice of the statistics for those not be-hind the wheel – especially pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedes-trian fatalities in 2015 rose 10 percent over the previous year, while bicyclist fatalities rose 13 percent. A larger number of roadway users is certainly a factor. But recent AAA Foundation for Traffi c Safety research on distracted and aggressive driving strongly suggests that improving driver behavior will provide the best chance to turn those statistics around.
This discussion is never more important than in Septem-ber, when children return to school and are riding, walking and running in places they hadn’t been during the summer months. We’ve said this before but it bears repeating – children are not small adults. They perceive and act differently in traffi c situations. They think that if they see you then you can see them. They think vehicles stop on a dime. They see and hear differently.
AAA’s annual School’s Open – Drive Carefully campaign is an opportunity to remind motorists that extra care is necessary when driving at the start of the school year. It’s also an opportunity for parents and schools to review safe walking practices and talk to students about how to safely get on and off a school bus, through a crosswalk, or between a car and a school building.
I referred earlier to the increasing number of bicyclist fatali-ties. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least 3 feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicycle. And make sure your child wears a properly fi tted bike helmet on every ride.
Perhaps our biggest reminder is about distractions. Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. Driving requires your full attention at all times, but especially now, when children are out in large numbers in school zones and neighborhoods.
Remember AAA’s annual safety mes-sage: School’s Open – Drive Carefully.

House and Garden , named for its former resident, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
3. Augusta, Maine: Augusta is a great comple-ment to any Acadia National Park trip. Any statehouse visit should include time for the 20-acre Capitol Park, which houses the Maine State Library, Maine State Archives and Maine State Museum . The latter includes exhibits on the state’s natural, social and economic history. The museum is open Saturdays, as is Old Fort Western. The 1754 National Historic Landmark is said to be the nation’s oldest surviving wooden fort, and it’s a short ride away.
4. Boston: Of all the cities on this list, Boston is most deserving of an entire weekend. The statehouse is a beautiful, gold-domed structure and certainly merits a tour, but you’ll likely want to experience Beantown’s fantastic restaurants and attractions. A few sugges-tions? L’Espalier and Menton are two of Massachusetts’ three AAA Five Diamond restaurants, while the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
are fantastic cultural institutions. Boston Duck Tours are a unique way to see the city.
5. Concord, N.H.: Concord sits at the crossroads of several of New Hampshire’s byways. You can make a morning of it by checking out Pierce Manse, open through Oct. 8, the former home of Presi-dent Franklin Pierce, or the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, which highlights exploration on Earth and in space. It’s named for two as-tronauts with New Hampshire ties – Alan Bartlett Shepard, the fi rst American in space, and Sharon Christa McAuliffe, a teacher who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion.
6. Harrisburg, Pa.: If you’re visiting Gettysburg, Hershey or Pennsylvania Dutch Country, consider a stop in Pennsylvania’s capital, which is just an hour away. The Pennsylvania State Capitol
spans 2 acres and is topped by a 272-foot-tall dome. The State Museum of Pennsylvania
is within walking distance and the National Civil War Museum is a 10-minute drive away. Consider a tour of the Susquehanna River, too.
7. Hartford, Conn.: Hartford houses several diverse attractions and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art , with 50,000 works of art, is one of the best. It’s pegged as the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the country. Other noteworthy
historic library known as the Providence Athenaeum and Waterplace Park, a popular gathering point for the renowned WaterFire installa-tion. The Roger Williams National Memorial, a U.S. National Park Service site with a small visitor center and park, tells the story of the state’s founder.
10. Richmond, Va.: Richmond’s history is as rich as any city on this list; Thomas Jefferson himself designed the Capitol. You can learn about the city’s Civil War-era history by visiting the White House of the Confederacy or the Museum of the Confederacy
, the former residence of Jefferson Davis and a large collection of Confederate artifacts, respectively. May-mont includes a 19th century mansion amid 100 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, and Hollywood Cemetery includes the graves of two U.S. presidents.
institutions include the former homesteads of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, a science center with dozens of hands-on exhibits and a performing arts center. The 37-acre Bushnell Park graces the statehouse.
8. Montpelier, Vt.: Mont-pelier is the smallest state capital. That said, it’s not a
bad stop off Route 89 on trips to Burlington or Montreal. Combine a statehouse tour with time in the 180-acre Hub-bard Park. The nearby Vermont History Museum details state history, and admission includes access to the Vermont Heritage Galleries, in Barre. For a truly local experience, check out Morse Farm Maple Sugar-
works. Learn about the farm’s history inside a shed made from sugar wood and enjoy a tasting on a sugar house tour.
9. Providence, R.I.: Adorned by one of the world’s largest self-supporting marble domes and a statue known as the Independent Man, the statehouse is walking distance from the RISD Museum , a

This time of year brings a riot of fall colors from its multitude of beech, ash, maple, black gum and dogwood trees.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Adirondacks, New York
In the village of Tupper Lake is the Wild Center , a nature-focused nonprofi t museum. One of its biggest draws – and one the kids will love – is the recently opened Wild Walk, 1,250-feet of elevated trails across the treetops, which in fall is quite magical. In Lake Placid, there are hundreds of hiking trails, including family-friendly
Cobble Hill, which offers fabulous views of the High Peaks region. In Lake George, you can take a replica steam-boat cruise, enjoy a round of mini-golf and play some video games in the many arcades.
Dine and stay: In both Lake Placid and Lake George there are family-friendly restaurants – not to mention ice cream shops. Lodging-wise, Lake Placid’s Mirror Lake Inn is a AAA Four Diamond prop-erty, while the newly opened Courtyard Lake George is a welcome addition to the vil-lage’s main thoroughfare.
If you’re wondering how much gas money to budget for your fall road trip, AAA’s new gas price website is well worth a few clicks.
The interactive, redesigned website – at AAA.com/GasPrices, includes an enhanced gas-cost calculator with expanded destination options and a miles per gallon fi lter for specialty vehicles.
The website also features the daily national gas average and compares current prices with the val-ues from one week, one month and one year ago.

ANTIQUING: The Berkshires, Massachusetts
This bucolic region is not only a prime leaf-peeping destination, but it’s also known for its many antique shops, es-pecially in the southern Berkshires. In Sheffi eld, Painted Porch Country Antiques and Cup-boards & Roses Swedish Antiques are two popular shops, while in Great Barrington, the Great Barrington An-tiques Center has more
than 50 dealers under one roof, selling everything from American quilts and antique clocks to estate jewelry and 19th century furniture. As you head north on Route 7, you’ll fi nd even more shops.
Dine and stay: In Great Barrington, it’s worth the wait for a table at Baba Louie’s to sample the wood-fi red pizza, while Allium is a fi ne dining restaurant with a farm-to-table menu. Stay in the Briarcliff Motel, a revamped 1960s mo-tor lodge overlooking Monu-ment Mountain, which offers great hiking opportunities.

8 AAA PIONEER VALLEY | SEPTEMBER 2016
By Molly ClarkThe absolute No. 1 item
on my travel bucket list is to stay in a treehouse hotel. The appeal lies somewhere between how being high up in the trees stirs dormant states of childlike wonder and how it induces a sensa-tion of calmness and feeling
Fall foliage
Move over, kids! These treehouses are for grown-upsof being one with nature. Either way, I can’t wait to do it.
If you’re brave enough to climb up into a treehouse for a local getaway, there’s no better time than fall in the Northeast, when stunning foliage dots mountainsides and hilltops.
Imagine viewing the splendor from within the trees, getting up-close and personal with the unique calligraphy of every distinct-ly painted leaf.
Sold? Check out some bucket list-worthy treehouse getaways to climb into this fall.
TREEHOUSE AT WINVIAN FARM155 Alain White Road
Morris, Conn.Winvian Farm, a luxury re-
sort set in the Litchfi eld Hills, is home to several creatively themed, luxurious cabins. Perhaps the most enticing of the bunch is the Treehouse. But this isn’t the crooked treehouse you nailed together in your backyard as a kid; this two-fl oor suite, nestled into the trees 35 feet above the ground, has a king-size bed, fi replace, Jacuzzi tub and walk-out deck. Guests also have access to the resort’s renowned dining
and spa facilities and the hotel’s outdoor ac-tivities including lawn games, fi shing, canoeing and horse-back riding.
THE AVIARY AT WHEATLEIGH
Hawthorne RoadLenox, Mass.
A stay in this remodeled former aviary in the Berk-shires will leave you feeling freed from the cage of the 9-to-5 daily grind. Guests enter the downstairs of the multi-level suite to fi nd an el-egantly decorated living room with a private terrace, then climb a glass-enclosed wooden staircase to the second level, which features a luxury bed-room suspended among the trees with attached en-suite, complete with soaking tub and walk-in shower. THE TREEHOUSE AT MOOSE
MEADOW LODGE607 Crossett HillWaterbury, Vt.
The rustic Treehouse at Moose Meadow Lodge fea-tures exposed timber, a stone sink, incinerating toilet and backwoods decor. Built for the rugged adventurer, the expansive treehouse features two levels, the fi rst with a wraparound porch and the second with a queen-size loft bedroom and a walk-out deck that allows guests to step out into the changing leaves while overlooking the lake just yards away.
THE TREE SPA AT HIDDEN POND
354 Goose Rocks RoadKennebunkport, Maine
At Hidden Pond, you can’t actually sleep in a tree – al-though you could fall into a blissful slumber while lying on the massage table. The resort is comprised of tiny cottages and bungalows set in the wooded wilderness, and those who choose to venture up into the trees for a spa treatment will fi nd the ultimate relaxation ex-perience. The spa menu includes massages, facials and body treatments, serviced in three separate treehouse spa rooms, all connected by treetop bridges. Imagine cozying up in a warm robe after a massage and gazing out at the reds, oranges and yel-lows of the foliage. It’s autumn immersion at its best.
HARMONY HILL LODGING AND RETREAT CENTER
694 McKee Hill RoadEast Meredith, N.Y.
Try your hand at glamp-ing – glamorous camping – by booking a yurt treehouse at this retreat in upstate New York. The yurt is set just off the ground, close enough for those scared of heights, yet far enough into the trees to immerse glampers in fall’s fantastic colors. The tents are waterproof and feature fully functional kitchens and bathrooms. Guests of the resort can rejuvenate with reiki treat-ments, guided meditation and spiritual mentoring.

By Mindy J. GinleyMy boyfriend and I recently
enjoyed a relaxing getaway at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort on the legend-ary Hollywood Beach Broadwalk in Hollywood, Fla. The resort’s southern Florida location is the perfect setting to escape the daily grind and just chill.
Nestled between Fort Lauder-dale and Miami, Hollywood is a classic beach town that’s charmed visitors since the 1920s. Its brick-paved promenade stretches nearly 2 ½ miles along the Atlan-tic Ocean. A haven for joggers, bicyclists and inline skaters, the Broadwalk is fi lled with countless restaurants and cafes.
Inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and author Jimmy Buffett, the resort’s “no worries” tropical vibe was felt the minute we arrived. The resort, which opened last November, is infl uenced by the colors of the sea, sand and sky. The 349-room guestrooms are modern, with sleek, teak-fi nished furnishings, subtle maritime accents, crisp white bedding, and colorful acces-sories create a relaxing setting for another day in paradise.
All guestrooms and suites have a balcony overlooking the ocean or the Intracoastal Waterway. The resort also offers meeting and outdoor event space, and would make a stunning venue for a destination wedding.
The resort has eight diverse bars and restaurants, ranging from casual to upscale. After a refreshing dip in the pool, we headed over to the Landshark Bar & Grill for a casual lunch and cocktails. From our seats overlooking the beachfront FlowRider Double surf simulator, we were en-tertained watching would-be surfers attempting to master the waves.
We enjoyed a fabulous dining experi-ence at JWB Prime Steak and Seafood. In addition to aged steaks and fresh
seafood, JWB’s menu also offers spear-caught fi sh; the species, location and diver change daily. Our day’s catch was cobia speared in Jupiter. Always up for trying new things, I savored every bite of the light, sweet fi sh.
The next morning, we treated our-selves to a relaxing couples massage at the resort’s St. Somewhere Spa. The expansive spa, which encompasses 11,000 square feet, offers hot stone massages, aromatherapy, facials, wax-ing and hair styling services.
After all this dining and relaxing, we were ready for some fun. Margari-taville offers plenty of recreational
activities, including paddleboard and bike rentals. The resort also features a state-of-the art fi tness center, two oceanfront pools with 22 cabanas, and an adults-only rooftop pool and License to Chill bar.
That evening, we headed across the street for some live entertainment at 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill. This rustic dockside bar on the Intra-coastal Waterway hosts daily sunset rituals from its waterfront beach. It also features a water taxi stop where you can check out the boutiques and cafes on Fort Lauderdale’s hip Las Olas Boulevard.
Always 5 o’clock at Margaritaville Traveling? Turn to a AAA agent
The Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort hews to Jimmy Buffett’s “no worries” vibe.
The internet is a wonderful resource for travelers.
Pictures of destinations far and wide are available in just a few clicks while travel blogs and review websites can help you discover attractions around the world.
But the internet’s seemingly bottomless pool of collective travel knowledge is not a traveler’s most valuable resource.
For that, you need a travel agent. Travel agents offer guidance and
support tailored to individual trips and travelers. You don’t need to worry about whether the infor-mation you’re getting is reliable, and you can rest assured that your travel professional is there for you – from the time you book until the time you get home.
Here are a few reasons why you should use a travel agent.
Price: Don’t spend more than you have to. Travel agents can connect you with the best prices on departures almost anywhere around the globe.
Options: Travel agents can offer an array of choices and prices, many of which you may not fi nd elsewhere.
Time: Time is a commodity. Instead of spending your leisure time scheduling itineraries, especially for more complex or international travel, let a travel agent complete the legwork and present you with a plan.
Current info: As fast as the internet moves, travel agents often move faster. These professionals are constantly in contact with travel partners to stay up-to-date on special and limited-time offers.
Advocacy: Travel agents can act for travelers during their trips to resolve problems or issues.
Docs: Leaving the country? You’ll need some documentation. Travel agents can help organize everything you need.

Deciding you need a vacation is easy. Deciding where to go, how to get there and what to do once you’ve arrived
can be a bit more challenging. Travelers can simplify researching their next getaway with AAA’s online
vacation planning service at AAA.com/Vacations. The site features thousands of guided and independent tour products from
dozens of AAA travel partners. With trips to destinations around the world, you’d need to track down more than 50 brochures to get as much information in one place.
Whether it’s a destination or an activity (scuba diving, anyone?) the planner will connect you with possibilities to pique your interest, and users can save packages to review later or share with friends and family via email or social media.
Content is reviewed and updated regularly to make sure members get the latest information. Everything from frequently entered search terms to industry-wide travel trends and member feedback are considered, and in some cases, entire tour packages are assembled based on members’ travel interests.
And just because the planner is digital doesn’t mean you forfeit any of AAA Travel’s world-class service using it.
Everyone who requests a quote will hear from a AAA travel agent, usually on the same day. And travel agents will contact members who book select trips through the site to help answer additional questions or provide more information.
Start planning your next vacation now by visiting AAA.com/Vacations.

Affordable Auto Glass of West Springfi eld, Mass., a AAA Dis-counts & Rewards partner, recently passed an on-site random safety audit by the Auto Glass Safety Council.
“There is a lot that goes into doing the job right the fi rst time and many replacement shops skip valuable steps, which will cause rust and damage to your automobile and can render the installation unsafe,” said Joe Esile, president of Affordable Auto Glass. “Very few shops have made the promise to ensure that the proper steps are made for each and every job. Remember, you have the right to go anywhere you want to have your glass replaced, and it doesn’t cost you any more.”
The AGSC is a not-for-profi t organization dedicated to the safe replacement of auto glass. It is an authority on safe auto glass installation practices and is responsible for North America’s only auto glass replacement standard. Visit AAA.com/Discounts for more information.

Only the best auto shops meet AAA’s standards
Finding trustworthy, repu-table auto repair facilities has never been easy for consum-ers. In fact, auto-related issues have consistently ranked in the top 10 of the Federal Trade Commission’s consum-er complaints list.
Since 1975, AAA has created and maintained a network of auto repair, auto body and auto glass shops across the U.S. and Canada vetted and backed by AAA.
To be AAA approved, shops must pass stringent investiga-tions to ensure they meet AAA’s exacting standards and agree in writing to offer AAA Members the following benefi ts:
• A repair warranty of 24,000 miles or 24 months.
• A member discount of 10 percent off labor ($50 cap).
• The return of all replaced parts, upon the member’s request.
• Authorization of any repair work that exceeds the original estimate by 10 per-cent or more.
• In the event of a dispute between a member and the facility, the shop must abide by all decisions arbitrated by AAA.
While traveling, you can feel peace of mind knowing there are 8,000 AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities in the U.S. and Canada. In the AAA Pioneer Valley territory, the network includes more than 20 AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities.

By Roberto X. Cruz Actions have consequences,
and bad decisions behind the wheel can cost you when it’s time to renew your car insur-ance policy.
Just ask someone arrested for impaired driving. The ones who did not injure themselves or others will probably tell you about hefty fi nes and major insurance rate hikes. The same goes for frequent speeders and drivers ticketed for passing a stopped school bus.
What’s more, a driver’s actions behind the wheel are just part of the car insur-ance equation. Drivers must decide which types of cover-age to carry and how much. Making good, informed choices is crucial. Here are fi ve examples of bad decisions that could cost you.
Lending a car to a friend: Nobody would fault you for lending your pickup truck to a friend who’s mov-ing, but know that you are also lending that person your car insurance. If he or she causes a crash, you would have to fi le a claim, pay a deductible and your rates might go up. If your friend is uninsured and causes a very serious crash, you could even be sued.
Filing too many claims: A car crash is one thing, but fi l-ing a bunch of claims for tiny dings and dents will put you on your insurance company’s radar for the wrong reasons. Serial claimants could see a rate increase. When you con-sider that, on top of the price of your deductible, it might make more sense to pay for an $800 bumper repair out of pocket.
Cellphone use: Recent studies show that a cellphone was involved in over 60
percent of car accidents in the U.S. One out of 4 car ac-cidents are caused by texting while driving. Texting is six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving. Your car insurance rates are strongly impacted by your driving record.
“Insurance carriers today take distracted driving very seriously, and, in some cases, cellphone infractions on a driving record could make the account ineligible for re-newal,” said Denice Turcotte, manager of AAA Pioneer Val-ley Insurance.
Not having enough insur-ance: Buying the mini-mum amount of insurance required might seem like a good idea at the time, but it could come back to bite you. If you cause a serious car crash with damages that exceed the limits in your policy, you could wind up paying for the remainder out of pocket. If you don’t have the money, your assets would then be at risk.
Not mentioning a new driver: If your teenage son or daughter is now driving the family car, tell your insur-ance agent. If you don’t, and your child causes an acci-dent, you could have benefi ts denied and your policy could be canceled. When it comes to insurance, honesty is the best policy, and good things happen when you make good decisions.

Bust that rust – or keep it from forming – with these easy tipsBy Roberto X. Cruz
When rust spreads, it’s more than just an eyesore. Corroded metal parts can eventually compromise the way a vehicle drives as well as its structural integrity, which is everything when it comes to crash performance. Fortunately, there are actions drivers can take to mini-mize the impact of rust on a vehicle, said Richard Reina, product training director for CARiD.com.
PREVENTION • Wash the car at least
once or twice per month. Be sure to rinse the under-carriage and clean each of the four wheel wells, where contaminants such as road salt can build up and acceler-ate the rusting process.
• Wax the car at least once or twice per year and apply touch up paint to spots that have chipped away. These products will act as mois-ture barriers, and moisture trapped against metal is what causes rust.
• Check for tears in the rubber seals along the win-dows and the trunk, and feel for water in those areas. If the seals feel too hard or too soft, or if there is water leaking through, it could be time to replace them.
• If your car has drain holes at the bottoms of its doors and rocker panels, keep them clear. Take a thin
screwdriver, stick it in the holes and wiggle it around to dislodge anything that is clogging them up.
REPAIR • Rust is like a disease.
When it takes hold, the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out. But there are ways to minimize its impact. Start by thoroughly cleaning the area. Use a garden hose to rinse away the grime.
• Now, you need to dry that area. You can use some old towels, let the car sit out in the sun or you could even use a heat gun. But you want to dry the metal as best as you
can to get rid of any residual moisture.
• Take a wire brush and scrape away the rust. Be careful not to damage the surrounding areas. Apply a paint treatment, such as a rust encapsulator or a paint-over-rust product. It won’t look pretty, but it will slow the rust down.
• If the rust has created a hole, or if it is eating away at the base frame, or chassis, of the vehicle, have it inspected at a qualifi ed repair facility. Rust of this nature can be dif-fi cult to repair and can have a major impact on your safety.

• 12 percent: cutting off an-other vehicle on purpose.
• 4 percent: getting out of the vehicle to confront another driver.
• 3 percent: bumping or ramming another vehicle on purpose.
Nearly 2 in 3 drivers believe that aggressive driving is a bigger problem today than three years ago, while 9 out of 10 believe aggressive drivers are a serious threat to their own personal safety.
Aggressive driving and road rage varied considerably among different driving demographics.
Male and younger drivers age 19 through 39 were signifi -cantly more likely to engage in aggressive behaviors. For ex-ample, male drivers were more than three times as likely as female drivers to participate in extreme behaviors, like getting out of a vehicle to confront another driver or ramming another vehicle on purpose.
Drivers who reported other unsafe behaviors behind the wheel, such as speeding and running red lights, also were more likely to show aggres-sion. For example, drivers who reported speeding on a freeway in the past month were four

Homeowners insurance
Steve Brochu, vice president of insurance ser-vices for AAA Pioneer Valley, answers your ques-tions about homeowners property insurance.
My dog missed me so much while I was at work that she tore up a carpet and gnawed on a doorframe in the house. Does homeowners insurance cover this?
Unfortunately, homeowners insurance cover-age for damage caused by a pet is limited. There is generally no coverage for your personal property, such as furniture or clothing. Most policies also exclude damage to the structure as well. Damage caused by bats, insects, rodents or birds is usually not covered.
I want to work from home. Are there any restrictions? No matter what sort of homeowners policy you have, there are
restrictions for business activity that originates from your home. Homeowners policies usually consider a trade, profession or occupation to be a business. There is no requirement for profi t. Typically, if an insurance company has evidence of a home-based business, damage to the home is covered. However, if the damage occurs to a separate structure, such as a detached garage, it will most likely be excluded.
There are ways to amend the homeowners policy to include coverage for certain business activities, but it is limited.
Will my policy cover solar panels? An increasing number of homeowners are placing solar panels
on their roofs, but forget to think if their homeowners policy will cover damage to the panels. If the homeowner owns the panels, he or she should increase the limit on coverage A (dwelling) to cover the cost of replacing the panels. If the solar panel company owns the panels, it would most likely have insurance on the panels.
Brochu
times more likely to cut off another vehicle on purpose.
“It’s completely normal for drivers to experience anger behind the wheel, but we must not let our emotions lead to destructive choices,” Marsian said. “Don’t risk escalating a frustrating situa-tion because you never know what the other driver might do. Maintain a cool head, and focus on reaching your desti-nation safely.”
AAA offers these tips to help prevent road rage.
Don’t offend: Never cause another driver to change his or her speed or direction. That means not forcing another driv-er to use their brakes or turn the steering wheel in response to something you have done.
Be tolerant and forgiving: The other driver may just be having a really bad day. As-sume that it’s not personal.
Do not respond: Avoid eye contact, don’t make gestures, maintain space around your vehicle and contact 911 if necessary.
The report is available on the AAA Foundation’s web-site and is part of the annual Traffi c Safety Culture Index, which identifi es attitudes and behaviors related to driver safety. The data was collected from a national survey of 2,705 licensed drivers age 16 and older who reported driving in the past 30 days. The AAA Foundation issued its fi rst Traffi c Safety Culture Index in 2008.
