Community Map Presentation Forthisactivity,teamsstepbackintimetotheearly1900s.Theirjobistopresenttheirpreferredmap.EachteampresentstheirmaptothecommunityandexplainstothemwherethetrackwillgointhissectionfromTelcoRoadtotheCattleGrid.Youdohavethebenefitofhindsight–thetrickisimaginingwhatitmighthavebeenlike100yearsago.Particularlyhighlightsomeofthewaysyourtramwaywillbeconstructed(e.g.usingthecut-and-fillmethodthroughthehills,buildingbridges,diggingtunnelsetc.etc.Eachteamdoesa5minutepresentationtotheaudienceoftownsfolk(fellowstudents)whocanaskquestionsafterwards.
Community Tramway Decision Re-enactment
Aim:Tore-enactacommunitydiscussiononwhethertoconstructaTramwaybetweenBuderimandPalmwoods.Studentswillworkintheirteamstodecidetheirviewsonthetramway–thepositivesandnegatives.Eachteamwillrepresentadifferentsectionofthecommunity.Thecommunityhasbeencalledtoameetingtodiscusswhethertogoaheadwiththetramway.Thetramwaywasinitiatedbythecommunityandittookovertenyearsfromfirstideatofinalagreementonroute.
Meeting Rules Themeetingwillbechairedbytheteacherandwillfollowthestructurebelow:
1. Alltobesilentwhenthechairspeaks.
2. Onlyspeakwhenthechairpersonhasacknowledgedyoubysayingyourname.
3. Onlyonepersontospeakatatime.
4. Eachgrouprepresentativewillbecalledontobrieflystatewhethertheyarefororagainstthemotionandtheirreasons(whichcanincludebothpositivesandnegatives).
5. Themeetingisthenopentotheaudiencetomakecommentsandaskquestions.

(refernextpage).
2. Inteams,studentsdiscusstheirpositionontheproposal.Theproposalupfordiscussionisasfollows:
‘The community will proceed with the tramway based on the following conditions: • The tramway will run from Buderim to Palmwoods to connect with the main line • It will travel the route designated by the engineer (agreed in the previous meeting) • The tramway will be mainly for goods carried on open wagons • Passengers will be able to travel in the one passenger carriage, with others sitting
on boxes on the open wagons • The tramway will be funded by a loan provided by the Queensland Government
Treasury to the Maroochy Shire Council, to be repaid by the residents of Buderim, through their Council rates over a period of 50 years.’

5. BuderimWomen’sAssociation:Thewomenareconcernedabouttheunsavourytypesthatmight
arrivebytramandhangaroundthevillage.Also,theyareworriedaboutwhattheblacksootwilldotoladiessilkdresseswhentheyaresittingonuncoveredwagons
6. Themotorisedwagon(truck)enthusiasts.Theydon'tthinkthetramwayisagoodideaatall.It'sold
technology.Theythinkthecommunityshouldbebuildingroadsformotorisedwagons(trucks).
7. TramwayEngineers.Theengineersareenthusiasticandarekeentospeakoftheexcellentcasefortheirwell-engineeredtramway,whichtheybelievewillbethemakingofBuderim.Theengineersdon'tgettovoteasitwouldbeaconflictofinterest,andtheyarenotpartofthelocalcommunity.
