Just-in-Time (JIT)
used to refer a production system in which both the processing and movements of goods occur
just as they are needed, usually in small batches
JIT is a characteristic of lean production system, which operates with very little “fat”
Benefits
• Lower processing cost• Fewer defects• Greater flexibility
Just-in-Time (JIT)Objectives
• Eliminate disruption
• Make system flexible by reducing setup time and lead time
• Eliminate waste, especially excess inventory
Building Blocks
• Product design• Process design• Personnel/organizational elements• Manufacturing planning & control
Just-in-Time (JIT)
Product Design
• Standard Parts: workers have fewer parts to deal with, training time and costs are reduced
• Modular design: clusters of parts treated as a single unit
• Highly capable production system: poor quality can create major
disruption
Just-in-Time (JIT)Process Design
• Small lot size
• Setup time reduction
• Manufacturing cells
• Limited WIP
• Quality improvement
• Production flexibility
• Little inventory storage
Just-in-Time (JIT)
Personnel/Organizational Elements
• Workers as asset
• Cross-trained workers
• Continuous improvement
• Cost accounting
• Leadership
Manufacturing Planning & Control
• Level loading
• Pull system
• Visual system
• Close vendor relationship
• Reduced transaction process
Just-in-Time (JIT)
• Preventive maintenance
