Local three piece alt-rock band Arm the Reckless had their hard earned efforts pay off when they took the honours in the Marlborough Smokefreerockquest at the Convention Centre on Saturday night.
Arm the Reckless also won the Skinny Mobile People’s Choice Award voted by text at the event.
Band members Mitch Alderlieste (lead guitar and vocals), Liam Hardman (bass) and Hayden Batt (drums) have only been together for three months but had made it their goal to win.

Story by Glenise DreaverGraeme Barsanti has had long service on the
council, being elected in 1989 when the council was formed in its current unitary structure. In his words, he has “a wealth of knowledge” about the area he serves.
In 1989 he was the policeman stationed at Havelock where he still lives, and he says: “The late Pat Ham-mond and the late Toot Morrison persuaded me that I was well known in the area, that people knew me and I was a good community man.”
He believes that is still true. He says he has been fighting for the infrastructure
of Marlborough for years, as well as for individual people who need help in understanding the working of council.
“That has been a big part of my role.”Working as a team member is vital he says - and
with staff who have the memory of why decisions were made. “To understand, to move forward is my aim.”
He is one of three Marlborough Sounds Ward councillors, where the three work as a team and “his” area covers communities in the Havelock, Pelorus sound, French Pass and D’Urville island areas. The other two cover Picton and Queen
Charlotte Sounds. He says, however, that while you work for your
area, you can’t win all the time. “You just accept that and try again.”He plans to do that on the admittedly expensive
issue of roading in the Kenepuru and French Pass areas. “It’s absolutely vital, but some councillors are against it.”
Such battles don’t stop him believing that this council is very effective and he likes the way it works.
He takes particular issue with fellow councillor Jessica’s Bagge’s comment in the Sun last Friday that decisions can be made in back rooms after meetings .
“Just rubbish. You go in to relax after a council meeting and you might discuss issues, but it does not go beyond that point.”
It is fair enough, he says that new councillors ask questions. “But first of all you listen and learn. Then ask.
“It takes two to three years to master the workings of legislation from example. You can’t do it in five minutes.”
Graeme’s worked with another contentious new councillor Jamie Arbuckle on resource consents and is admiring of the way he has changed and grown since the Sheard hearing and subsequent report. “He thinks. And you’ve got to move on.”
As he looks ahead to the prospect of another term, he says his philosophy is summed up in the Maori
proverb he loves. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tan-
gata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It
is people! It is people!
Justice Minister Judith Collins yesterday announced the Governor-General has declined Scott Watson’s application for the Royal prerogative of mercy.
“After thorough consideration of all the relevant material, I advised the Governor-General that Mr Watson’s application be declined,” Ms Collins said.
Mr Watson was convicted of murdering Ben Smart and Olivia Hope who were last seen boarding a yacht in Endeavour Inlet in the early hours of January 1 1998.
Following unsuccessful appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council claiming his innocence, Mr Watson ap-
plied to the Governor-General for exercise of the Royal prerogative of mercy.
“In 2009 the Ministry of Justice engaged Kristy McDonald QC to provide advice on Mr Watson’s application,” Ms Collins says.
Ms McDonald considered not only Mr Watson’s original application, but also additional material that was provided by Mr Watson and his legal team between the submission of his original application and December 2012.
Ms McDonald concluded that nothing provided in support of his application created a real risk that he was wrongfully convicted.

In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment.
We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
After nearly six years in NZ there are now enough people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work if you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!”

Blenheim Police are sure the matter of the Blenheim flasher will be resolved in the near future.
“We are following a number of leads,” said Barbara Dunn, com-munications manager for the Tasman Police district.
The man, who has been exposing himself to young women in the Pollard Park area, is described as a Caucasian in his twenties, with a scruffy appearance. He is believed to have changed his hair colour recently.
Senior sergeant Peter Payne said while the man’s behaviour was alarming, police had no indication that he posed any physical threat to the public.
Anyone approached by a person acting in an inappropriate man-ner should contact police immediately on 111 he said.
They would also like to hear from any witnesses who have not yet reported the incident.

Story by Celeste LodewykPolice have made one arrest in relation to the as-
sault on an 18-year-old on the Taylor River Bank on June 28, but are still appealing to the group of young people who witnessed the incident to come forward.
Sarah Hughes, the mother of the victim went public last week in an effort to find those who were responsible for the attack which left her son with serious facial injuries requiring surgery.
Speaking to the Sun yesterday after arriving home from Hutt Hospital, Sarah said her son was treated for fractures and nerve damage after being punched and kicked about the head while on the ground.
“We discovered that his cheek bone was severely broken which required surgery, and the nerve damage to his face we have been told should not be permanent,” she said.
A Gillies technique was carried out which involved surgeons making an incision behind the hairline above the ear to push a steel rod across to the cheek bone to push the bones back into place.
Fortunately surgeons did not have to place a plate or screws and his eye socket has been left to heal naturally, Sarah said. But there will be a recovery period requiring her son to eat soft food and stay elevated for three weeks.
Sarah and her son were contacted by Victim Support who they gave impact statements to, and
Sarah has passed on information to the Police uncovered from her inquiries.
“Through my social media appeals and people who have contacted me I have passed on the names of five people from the group as well as contacts for two of them.
“I just want these people to come forward and own up to what they have done. I know who they are and their details are with the Police but it’s just a matter of waiting now,” she said.
A Police spokesperson told the Sun yesterday that further inquiries are being carried out and Police still want to speak to the several members of the group who witnessed the incident as soon as possible.

tracks have recorded their mil-lionth visitor since accurate count ing bega n i n 1993. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sow-man says the walking and cy-cling tracks are the town’s most popular recreational facilities. Each week, at least three thou-sand people are walking the paths while another 400 mountain bik-ers use the mountain bike tracks. Council amenities officer Robin Dunn says magnetic track counters were installed at several main access points in 1993, providing better information about user numbers.
Continued from page 1“I has been a personal goal of mine to win
the Smokefreerockquest for three years so when we formed our band we worked really hard at polishing our performance and stage presence, and it’s paid off,” Mitch told the Sun.
Arm the Reckless has recently released its five track EP and has to date written eight songs.
The next stage for the band is to record a 15 minute video which will be sent to Smokefre-erockquest for finalist judging.
Solo/duo section winner Lee Stuart (17) from Marlborough Girls’ College was thrilled with her win and has been playing piano since she was 10. It was her fourth time at Smokefreerockquest.
“I’d always tried to go for a more pop sound but this time I decided to stick to my roots in jazz and I put as much soul into it as I could.”
Second place in the band category went to 8Bit Dreams from Queen Charlotte College, made up of Tarn Greenlaw (drums), Aidan
Quinn-Brereton (bass), Jack Gent (rhythm guitar and George Lowe (lead guitar).
Dani Gibbs and Jack Driffill from Queen Charlotte College placed second in the solo/duo category, and also took out the APRA Lyric Writers Award for their song Open

associate sponsors NZ Rockshops, and the opportunity to gain selection for the SFRQ national final in Auckland on Saturday, September 28.

A Night of Kiwiana was held on Saturday night as a fundraiser for local boys Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski who are head-ing to Glasgow for the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Champion-ships next month.
To date an incredible $30,000 has been raised by supporters and members of the community, said
Callum’s father Sturrock Saunders.Silent and live auctions were held
which were well supported by the 250 who attended.
“The result and feedback from Saturday evening has been great and we thank everyone for their contribution, it was a great night.”
Callum and Quinn leave Blenheim today to join the nine-strong team competing in the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome from August 7 to 11.
“This championship is the pin-nacle event for Callum and Quinn who are in really good form.
“They have raced at the Oceania Track Cycling Championship and the Youth Olympics in the last 12 months but haven’t got to where they want just yet, so Glasgow is a trip they are really looking forward to.
“They have high expectations which is great,” Sturrock said.

Story and photo by Celeste LodewykThousands of pre-loved books were sold
at the weekend when the Cancer Society Marlborough held its Midwinter Book Sale fundraiser at the McKendry Motors Show-room.
Despite the wet weather, people of all ages, including young children visited the sale.
They walked away with armloads and even large boxes of books at bargain prices.
Organiser Margaret Tepania said she was overwhelmed with the generosity of donated books from the community and was thrilled with the amount of money raised.
"We are still counting but the total will be around $6000 which is fantastic and we are so happy with the success of the book sale," she said.
Money raised will go toward the ser-vices of the Cancer Society for the people of Marlborough.
This is the second year that this sale has been run, and all left over books will be donated to the Blenheim Lions Club who will hold their own book sale later in the year.
The next fundraising event for the Cancer Society is Daffodil Day on August 30.

Street car (below) park on Thursdays. The parking is being trialed in a bid to encourage
more people to shop in the central business district.Marlborough District Councillor Terry Sloan and
a group of business owners are behind the idea, which is modelled off an initiative that took place in Nelson.
Mr Sloan says he hopes the free car parking will
work as an incentive to get more people into the CBD.
“We have got to try something. It’s a pretty tough time and whatever we can try and do to help busi-nesses in the CBD is a good thing.”
He says Thursday was chosen, because it is the day that the council takes in the least revenue from car parking.
The free car parking will be trialed until the end of August, and will begin this week.

Thursday action on “legal highs”Associate Health Minister Todd
McClay says he is counting down the days until a new law provides New Zealanders with greater protection from so-called "legal highs".
The Psychoactive Substances Bill is expected to pass its third and final reading on Thursday this week.
It means the drugs must be im-mediately removed from dairies and non-specialist shops.
There will also be strict prohibi-tions on the sale to, possession and consumption by under 18-year-olds.
"The sooner this dangerous muck is out of our dairies and corner stores the better,” said Mr McClay.
He said that communities had in-creasingly been successful in having products removed from local shelves.
“The Psychoactive Substances Bill will back local communities by giving new powers to councils to further restrict the sale and availability of 'legal highs'.”

On Saturday, Picton celebrated the successful end of stage one of the new Port Marlborough Pavilion.
There was also a very real sense that the celebrations were just the end of the beginning.
The opening at noon drew well over 100 guests, who braved gales and heavy rain to make their way to the building.
Fortunately, just before Archdeacon Harvey Ruru blessed the pavilion and those who would use it now and in the future, the wind and rain stopped. Rita Powick presented the karanga, the welcome call, and Archdeacon Ruru then led those present on a circuit of the spacious, light-filled new hall.
It was the end of a two-year odyssey for the organising com-mittee, led by Graham Gosling. Those two years of hard work on the
community multi-purpose facility were acknowledged by all the speakers, in-cluding Kaikoura MP Colin King and Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman.
But even as they celebrated, the com-mittee members were already looking forward to raising their next million for Stage 2.
That will include a gym, squash courts and a conference room that can be divided into two for break out rooms.
Graham Gosling recognised the fu-ture generations who will use the com-plex when he invited youngsters to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Bunty Bunt, above, in his nineties and a former Spitfire and Hurricane pilot with a lifetime record of community service and leadership, cut the ribbon. He was supported by seven proud youngsters, representatives of their schools and sporting codes who will be the next generation to benefit.

I’d say July 14. A girl. Probably called Victoria.
Connor HamillBlenheim
I will guess July 27 for the birth and I think it will be a boy. For names I think they will be really old fashioned like their own names and might use a name like Charles.
Josh PopeBlenheim
I think it will be a boy and born on July 20. I imagine the name will be something normal and ‘royal’ like David or Michael. I don’t think they will have anything unique.
Mel GiffordBlenheim
August 1, and it’ll be a girl. They’ll go wtih something traditional, but Diana will be in the mix. Anything fashionable would be too out there for a queen.
Rochelle HerktBlenheim
I think it’ll be a girl, born on July 23. Diana after William’s mum. And perhaps Elizabeth too - that’s more traditional.
Bev RidderBlenheimI am guessing it will be a girl and the birth date will be July 7. For names I am sure they will use Diana as some part of the name.

Jigging/Softbait Evening July 18th 2013
Dear Ed,We don't need to look too far today to see political
correctness is rife. Values have been turned inside out. Topsy, turkey stuff.
I came across a UK commentator's thoughts on the matter.
"What's right is wrong, what's wrong is politically correct, what's politically correct is right."
Well said. Think about it all MPs.Don Coyote
Dear Ed,I was walking along Queen Charlotte Drive
yesterday when two male cyclists passed me riding side by side.
I expressed my concern of how dangerous that was and they thought that was highly amusing.
On their way back the middle cyclist was on the centre line. Sadly it probably would not be them killed but the driver or child in the car swerving to avoid them. I found their attitude not only ignorant but arrogant, foolish and very very pompous. They are grown men acting like teenagers not thinking of the consequences. I hope they read this and start thinking of others and not just themselves.
Denise Elliott

Dear Ed, Would the person or persons responsible for
removing the strip of tar seal approximately four metres wide and 60 metres in length, between the Alfred Street roundabout and the Hutcheson Bridge, please return it immediately. This unneces-sary stupidity has created a dangerous road safety issue for pedestrians, and increased the potential for a serious vehicle accident, as well as inflated our annual rates.
Dumb Idea
Lest we forgetDear Ed, Would the person or persons responsible for remov-
ing the absolutely stunning view of the Blenheim riverbank, previously available through the window of the RSA Dining Bar, please return it and no more will be said.

MissingCompliance
Dear Ed,In view of the current situation
with the CCC and the goverment's international accreditation agency for building consents etc ( IAC), you might be interested to look at IAC's web site (Ministry of BIE) latest technical review report dated May 20 2013 concerning the MDC's level of compliance.
In particular the various examples given of non-compliance and in particular the lack of compliance
of the emergency egress lighting of a primary school in Marlborough (example 6 from memory, not named, but I know of it or one other).
I find it incredible that, as I under-stand it, compliance personnel have been seconded from MDC to CCC.
The report, particularly the conclu-sions and recommendations makes interesting bed-time reading, unless you are contemplating building in Marlborough.

The ever-growing number of singing successes racked up by Marlborough Boys’ College student choirs has to draw attention to the musical passion of their choral teacher, Con O’Brien.
Yet singing was not Con’s first musical choice. His licentiate is in the violin.
“I didn’t want to practice though and the day I got the qualification, I put the violin down. I’ve never played it since.“
But Con emerged as a singer at the deepest level of his being, though you have to ask why he chooses to teach, rather than perform.
He has done the performing thing, for example taking the lead role in Les Miserables for the Blenheim Musical Theatre in 1995, but for him the pinnacle of what he wanted to do became to teach young people.
“I love it.”And what he loves most of all is musical theatre.
That’s not to say he doesn’t love opera – he does, and some of his students have gone on to significant careers on the operatic stage.
“But I didn’t have the discipline. And I smoked. Exactly what I tell my students not to do.”
He instils that self discipline in his students though, both in their choral work in the school and in the careers that some move on to.
“There’s James Rodgers. He’s doing very well on the opera scene in New York. And Peter King. He sings with the New Zealand Opera Chorus.“
Con also has his eye on another very promising singer this year in Isaac van Velthooven.
He still remembers Isaac’s beautiful treble voice and the way his own heart sank at the end of Isaac’s first year at school.
“He went out the door and said “Bye”. And I thought ‘Oh no!’.
The treble was, however, replaced with a true basso
profundo. “That’s very rare. It’s a beautiful, beautiful voice.”
This year, the head boy (and captain of the first XIV) Atu Moli is also a gifted singer. With him has come an influx of Pacific Island boys, bringing a big sound to the school’s premier choir No Girls Aloud.
Con’s hoping that interest will spread to some of the Maori students.
“I am Maori myself and I’m disappointed that more of them haven’t yet joined. “
With Atu as a role model, he says, there is however, a
powerful message that you can be a leader, a top sportsman - and a singer.
“These good singers are also often undertaking service to the community. They also tend to have very good support from their families.”
Family support includes singing to children from the time they are babies. It doesn’t matter at all if you can’t sing well, he says.
Marlborough can count itself fortunate that Con’s dedication nurtures a culture of enjoyment of and excellence in singing.
The choral successes are im-mediately apparent, but there is another legacy of the love of singing, one that will have far-reaching effects in many lives.

Jesus Christ SuperstarCon is now in the final stages of rehearsals for the combined colleges’
production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He has been guiding the chorus and principals through the score, a bigger task than usual because the show is completely sung.
This is, he says, going to be an outstanding production and people should book their tickets now.
The show opens at the Marlborough Civic Theatre on Tuesday August 6 and runs through to Saturday August 10 with a matinee on the Saturday afternoon.

A fresh new look on Main Street
The 2013 colour forecast as predicted by Dulux, one of Guthrie Bowron's leading brands has directed colour consultants toward "the dusty pastels of Impressionist paintings, quirky tones inspired by the Fifties and a touch of fluro bright".
According to the forecast there's a move towards colour layering at home, including different shades of pastels across the walls of one room or bold orange and pinks sitting side by side on furniture.
A trend to look out for this year is the move towards using small flashes of colour rather than painting the entire space. The forecast for 2013 draws on the themes of “movement”, “social change”, “people power”, and the march of the digital age. It explores how colour is shifting and changing in modern times
Dulux’s other palettes for 2013 are:Empower: Mostly blue and blue-
green hues that show the power of colour on masse. This range is designed to inspire openness, truth, and com-munication.
Merge: Evoking nostalgia with a new twist, this range includes natural stone colours such as Camel Hide, Persim-mon, or Terracotta Chip.
Blur: A daring and bold palette of pinks with purple contrasts through to near-red oranges. These warm and vibrant hues are designed to create excitement as they’re used together.
Seek: Recalling a range of eras whose popularity have worn and faded but are now back in trend, these colours rep-resent objects that have been inherited, salvaged, or hand made.
Rise: Influenced by the Japanese design aesthetic, this palette explores neo-pastel hues conveying serenity and comfort. Though seemingly minimal-ist, the soft tones are punctuated by brighter gelato hues of green and blue.

“Give her voice and help her be heard”.This is the catch-cry of the Women’s
Refuge July 2013 campaign.July is the Women’s Refuge Awareness
and Appeal month and it is the hope that the community can be educated about domestic violence while fundraising to supports the refuges operating costs.
Marlborough Women’s Refuge manager Rachel Black said they were only around 62 percent government funded, so in order to continue its operations grants and donations were crucial.
“The community has showed amazing support to us by donating household
goods and clothing which we really ap-preciate, and we are hoping that this year’s Appeal will be a success,” she said.
Demand on the Marlborough Women’s Refuge has increased, particularly in the past three months Rachel said.
“It has been really busy due to an increase in family violence. There are a lot of contributing factors including the economy.
“It’s not just abuse, there is a lot of financial hardship where families are finding it difficult putting food on the table and paying bills which add to the stress and tension.
“These are no excuse for violence but they certainly don’t help,” she said.
There are many ways to donate and help support the vital services provided by the Marlborough Women’s Refuge.• Make a donation to street collectors

Supporting the women who need us
There are many common myths about domestic violence – such as ‘Why doesn’t she just leave?’ – but female and child victims don’t ‘ask for it’, and no one deserves to be abused. The responsibility for both the abuse and the personal changes needed to stop the behaviour lies firmly with the abuser.
Domestic violence is about a systematic pattern of coercive control punctuated by physical, sexual, emotional or financial violence that leaves the victim intimidated, hurt and fearful for her life, and the lives of her family.
Domestic violence is not limited to any demographic. It happens in rural and urban areas, within all age, reli-gious and ethnic groups, and across all socio-economic groups. It can happen between people who are mar-ried, in de facto relationships or just dating. Domestic violence happens in same sex relationships, too.
The Domestic Violence Act 1995 legally protects any-one in a domestic relationship from violence: married couples; unmarried couples; gay and lesbian couples; children; family; anyone in a close relationship; and flatmates and others who may share accommodation from violence. There are other relevant laws also in place to protect your rights.
Violence is never your fault – it’s the abuser’s

By Annabelle LatzBen Breeze now knows the sensation of
grass between his toes, and used to think
that sausage rolls were just hilarious. The four year-old arrived in Blenheim a
year ago with his mum, dad and sister, after
their home city 60km from Tokyo was left
in ruins after the earthquake on March 12,
2011. His parents Katrina and Kent were born
in the South Island, but Kent’s work had
taken them to Japan, although Ben was born
in Singapore and moved to Japan shortly
afterwards.His 14 month-old sister Isabella was born
in Japan. They joined their grandmother Lorraine
Milmine here in Blenheim, and Kent’s
mother who lives in Christchurch is Japa-
nese. The Breeze family had an apartment on
the top floor of a 16-storey building at To-
kyo’s International Airport in Narita, where
Kent was involved in the hotel business, the
day their lives changed. Ben was having an afternoon nap, Katrina
was playing with Isabella, and Kent had just
come upstairs for an afternoon coffee.“It was never unusual for there to be an
earthquake, we just got used to them, most
Japanese people don’t even blink they are
so common,” said Kent.CONTINUED PAGE 3.

Grout is a very porous material and is rarely sealed when new so it starts to absorb dirt and bacteria from day one. In no time it starts to looks dirty and unsightly, no matter how long you spend on your knees trying to scrub it clean. To make it worse, the wrong type of cleaners could cause more damage!
However, Marlburians can now forget endless, pointless scrubbing, as Blenheim locals Darryl and Cecilia Norman have just started up GroutPro (Marlborough) Ltd. They are part of a team of franchisees throughout New Zealand and Australia.
“GroutPro is the only business in New Zealand specialising in tile and grout restoration and we offer a cost effective solution to making your tiles and grout look brand new again” says Darryl and Cecilia. “It costs only a small proportion of the price to restore tiles than to replace them”.
“We are delighted to be able to offer the people of Marlborough this unique service. Our previous experience in the flooring industry combined with intensive GroutPro training has provided us with a good grounding with which to start our new venture.
One of the biggest drawcards for us was to be able to see what a huge difference our services can make to the appearance of tiled areas in a home.”
Their product range and services include a breathable, topical sealer called Colourseal, unique in New Zealand, which repels dirt, oils and water and will prevent your grout from restaining for up to 15 years. This is applied to grout lines after a deep and thorough clean with specialist products and equipment and offers a range of 89 different colours.
“It looks fantastic once it is applied, truly making your grout lines look like new again and as it repels dirt and oils – no more scrubbing!!!” If you are building a new home with tiled areas, Coloursealing the grout as part of the build finish is high recommended.
If you are selling your home and want to give all the tiled areas a like new appearance, give Darryl and Cecilia a call. Fabulous kitchens and bathrooms sell houses and the GroutProl process could increase the value of your home and help you clinch the deal!

Michael & Linda have an enormous passion to see Revival come to all New Zealand and have been coming out here from the United States for many years and have been a part of many great revivals here over that time. In their meetings many people have experienced the realms of the Spirit as never before, and also in some cases they have received, miracles, healings and/or a revelation of the Supernatural for the very first time in their lives. Many signs and wonders and healings and miracles can always be expected in the meetings, when and wherever the Livengood’s are speaking and ministering.
Inviting you to come and hear a testimony for men, women and youth

Kids Platter
The children at Renwick Kindergarten have been exploring different ways of creating art. Their recent excursion to the Taylor Pass honey factory, then the Millennium art gal-lery, lead to children creating their own art in Seymour square.
Drawing inspiration from the plants, they learnt how bees pollinate the flowers and plants, discovering the natural world they were able to make connections and represent their ideas within different art mediums.
Back at Kindergarten, the art blocks were painted and finished.
The Renwick Kindergarten decided to have its own exhibition so children could share their own art discoveries with parents/ Whanau and a gallery was set up within the kindergarten.
The children used large card board and spray bottles to create splat paintings, learn-ing about colour mixing and pattern making.
This was a wonderful way to finish off the term and celebrate the children's exploration of bees and art.
Families/Whanau were invited to the opening of the exhibition which was held during the kindergarten's picnic last Friday.
The Renwick Kindergarten hosted its own art exhibition to showcase its children’s art explorations. Story and photo supplied.

027 939 5491 By Emily ElliottSpending six weeks in Europe
and Asia to raise money for charity will be the adventure of a lifetime for a local biker.
Twenty-six year old Jim Millard left for the United Kingdom on Saturday, where he will begin his 16,000km charity ride through countries such as France, Ger-many, Russia, Slovakia, Poland, Uzbekistan and Kazikstan this weekend.
Jim has been preparing for the ride, named the Mongol Rally, for ten months.
He will be completing it on a postie bike with his friend from Germany, Markus Schell.
"It's the challenge of taking it. It's a long course, and motorbikes have to be under 125cc.
"They give you a start point and a finish point and you chose where to go."
Jim and Markus are hoping to complete the ride in six weeks, but will be playing the majority of the trip by ear.
They will be staying in tents and hostels along the way, and have to carry all of their gear themselves.
"It's the smallest bike I've rid-den the longest distance with," said Jim.
"There are no support vehciles. People have been seriously injured or died on Mongol rally."
The bike he is riding will only have a top speed of 70km/h.
Jim has been riding bikes since he was seven, and hasn't done much training leading up to the rally.
"I'm just going to jump on and go.
"It will probably be the biggest adventure I do," said Jim.
One of the rules of the rally is that each team (of 2) has to raise a minimum of 1,000 pounds for charity organisation Cool Earth.
Cool Earth works within the Amazon rainforest to prevent it from being cut down.
"Everything's for charity," said Jim.
He works month on, month off as
a helicopter engineer in Papua New Guinea.Jim has taken his next month off to do the rally,
giving him three months before he starts work again. To keep up with Jim and Markus as they make the
trip, follow their updates at www.theadventurists.com/wannabe-cockys.

An upset looked possible for the Marlborough Boys’ College first XV against St Bede’s College in Christch-urch last Saturday.
St Bede’s, leaders in the Press Cup, had not been beaten on their home ground in 61 matches going back to May 2007.
However, they were pushed all the way by a never-say-die Marlborough team which had tipped over seven times Press Cup winners, Christchurch Boys’ High School in Blenheim the week before.
Cheered on by a large contingent of Marlborough supporters who had travelled south for the match, MBC was level pegging with St Bede’s at halftime, 10-all.
St Bede’s nudged ahead with a successful penalty but soon after Levi Brunton scored a fine try for MBC which put the visitors in the
lead for the first time, 15-13.The St Bede’s supporters
went silent as a boilover looked possible but MBC’s propensity to give away penalties proved costly and St Bede’s kicker Jamayne Isaako was successful again with a penalty. However, a St Bede’s forward was yellow-carded not long after and it seemed MBC could take advantage of this situation.
Instead, St Bede’s scored; with the try converted and the score was out to 23-15.
However, MBC was not finished and Chad Ternent ran in a fine try which Abe Rood converted and it was now 23-22.
In the closing stages St Bede’s played for territory. MBC, in trying to run out of their own 22, coughed up yet another penalty and the final score ended St Bede’s 26, MBC 22.
MBC plays Christ’s College in Christchurch on Saturday.

Waitohi’s Premier Rugby team had a 25-all draw with their close rivals Central in their first game on their new ground at Endeavour Park on Saturday.
This match was a special, played in honour of the Port Marlborough Pavilion opening. The Picton team will play their final home game back at the Waitohi grounds next weekend and may move to Endeavour Park in 2014.
The sun came out for the occasion, though there had been heavy rain that left the ground waterlogged.
Club president Robin Beattie said despite the condition of the grounds, the day was “brilliant”.
“The whole day was just magic.” They would be continuing work with
the council to improve remaining issues with drainage, he said.
There had already been a lot of drainage work done by the Council, he said.
The last technique, sand splitting, had only been done on the main ground and that was “not too bad”.
There were, however, very waterlogged areas where that work had not been done, in the dead ball areas and at the edges of the ground he said.
“It may take a year or so to get right, and there is the issue of funding, but I am confident it will happen.”
Crafar Crouch Waitohi may meet Biddy Kate’s Central again this season, depending on how each team fares in the semi finals again for the Marlborough premier club rugby competition grand final. Like the semi-finals, it will be played at Lansdowne Park
This means that the Endeavour Park ground will not be used again this season.

Marlborough WoMen’S triathlon
This year’s popular Women’s Triathlon, to be held on Sunday December 1, will be run by Mark Grammer, an international multisport athlete and Lance Spencer, who are partners in Marlborough Sport Development. They currently run the Cuddon Cycling junior programme and organised the Anakiwa Triathlon, the Michael Huntley Memorial Tri-athlon and the Marlborough Quad-rathon earlier this year.
SoCCer CanCelledPicton Football Club had to cancel
the planned fixtures on the Endeav-our Park soccer grounds on Saturday.
While the teams were all pumped and ready to go on their new turf, because of the waterlogged nature of the ground the matches had to be cancelled.
The Waitohi Rugby Club was able to play on the other side of the sta-dium for its only game this year, but the soccer players needed to protect their new home ground for the rest of the season.
Crafar Crouch Waitohi played biddy Kate’s Central on Saturday in a game that tested the gritty determination of both sides.
