Study skills are the skills you need to enable you to study and learn efficiently they are an

important set of transferable life skills.

    Key points about study skills:

You will develop your own personal approach to study and learningin a way that meets

your own individual needs. As you develop your study skills you will discover what works for you, and

    what doesnt.

Study skills are not subject specific- they are generic and can be used when studying

any area. You will, of course, need to understand the concepts, theories and ideas surrounding your

specific subject area. To get the most out of your studies, however, youll want to develop your study

    skills.

You need to practise and develop your study skills. This will increase your awareness ofhow you study and youll become more confident. Once mastered, study skills will be beneficial

    throughout your life.

Study skills are not just for students.Study skills are transferable - you will take them

with you beyond your education into new contexts. For example, organisational skills, time

management, prioritising, learning how to analyse, problem solving, and the self-discipline that is

required to remain motivated. Study skills relate closely to the type of skills that employers look for.

Academic skills are a collection of study habits, learning strategies, andtime managementtools

that help students learn and absorb school lessons. For most students, learning is about much

more than access to information. Teachers often include academic skills in their lessons in order

for students to really master certain concepts. These skills not only benefit the students when it

comes time to take tests, but can also help in the future: solid study skillsare essential for college

success, for instance, and learning to balance multiple demands at once is valuable to many

    different career paths.

Examples of academic skills include time management, reading proficiency, oralcommunication, written communication, critical thinking, research abilities, analytical thinking

and problem solving. In addition, students also need organizational and interpersonal skills toexcel in an academic setting.

The key to becoming an effective student is learning how to study smarter, not harder. This becomesmore and more true as you advance in your education. An hour or two of studying a day is usuallysufficient to make it through high school with satisfactory grades, but when college arrives, therearen't enough hours in the day to get all your studying in if you don't know how to study smarter.

While some students are able to breeze through school with minimal effort, this is the ece!tion. Thevast ma"ority of successful students achieve their success by develo!ing and a!!lying effective studyhabits. The following are the to! #$ study habits em!loyed by highly successful students. So if youwant to become a succesful student, don't get discouraged, don't give u!, "ust work to develo! each ofthe study habits below and you'll see your grades go u!, your knowledge increase, and your ability to

    learn and assimilate information im!rove.

    1. Don't attempt to cram all your studying into one session.%ver find yourself u! late at night e!ending more energy trying to kee! your eyelids o!en than youare studying& f so, it's time for a change. Successful students ty!ically s!ace their work out overshorter !eriods of time and rarely try to cram all of their studying into "ust one or two sessions. f youwant to become a successful student then you need to learn to be consistent in your studies and tohave regular, yet shorter, study !eriods.

. !lan when you're going to study.Successful students schedule s!ecific times throughout the week when they are going to study (( andthen they stick with their schedule. Students who study s!oradically and whimsically ty!ically do not!erform as well as students who have a set study schedule. %ven if you're all caught u! with your

studies, creating a weekly routine, where you set aside a !eriod of time a few days a week, to reviewyour courses will ensure you develo! habits that will enable you to succeed in your education longterm.

". #tudy at the same time.)ot only is it im!ortant that you !lan when you're going to study, it's im!ortant you create aconsistent, daily study routine. When you study at the same time each day and each week, you'restudying will become a regular !art of your life. *ou'll be mentally and emotionally more !re!ared foreach study session and each study session will become more !roductive. f you have to change yourschedule from time to time due to une!ected events, that's okay, but get back on your routine assoon as the event has !assed.

$. %ach study time should have a specific goal.

Sim!ly studying without direction is not effective. *ou need to know eactly what you need toaccom!lish during each study session. Before you start studying, set a study session goal thatsu!!orts your overall academic goal +i.e. memorize $ vocabulary words in order to ace thevocabulary section on an u!coming S!anish test.-

&. Never procrasitinate your planned study session.t's very easy, and common, to !ut off your study session because of lack of interest in the sub"ect, because you have other things you need to get done, or "ust because the assignment is hard.Successful students / )/T !rocrastinate studying. f you !rocrastinate your study session, your

studying will become much less effective and you may not get everything accom!lished that you needto. 0rocrastination also leads to rushing, and rushing is the number one cause of errors.

. #tart with the most difficult su()ect first. As your most diffult assignment or sub"ect will re1uire the most effort and mental energy, you shouldstart with it first. /nce you've com!leted the most difficult work, it will be much easier to com!lete the

rest of your work. Believe it or not, starting with the most difficult sub"ect will greatly im!rove theeffectiveness of your study sessions, and your academic !erformance.

*. +lways review your notes (efore starting an assigment./bviously, before you can review your notes you must first have notes to review. Always make sure totake good notes in class. Before you start each study session, and before you start a !articularassignment, review your notes thoroughly to make sure you know how to com!lete the assignmentcorrectly. 2eviewing your notes before each study session will hel! you remember im!ortant sub"ectmatter learned during the day, and make sure studying targeted and effective.

    ,. ake sure you're not distracted while you're studying.%veryone gets distracted by something. 3aybe it's the T4. /r your family. /r maybe it's too 1uite.

Some !eo!le actually study better with a little background noise. When you're distracted while you're

studying you +#- loose your train of thought and +5- you're unable to focus (( both of which will lead tovery ineffective studying. Before you start studying find a !lace where you won't be disturbed ordistracted. Some !eo!le this is a 1uite cubical in the recesses of the library.

. /se study groups effectively.%ver heard the !hrase 6two heads are better than one6& Well this can be es!ecially true when it comesto studying. Working in grou!s enables you to +#- get hel! from others when you're struggling tounderstand a conce!t, +5- com!lete assignments more 1uickly, and +- teach others whereby hel!ingboth the other students and yourselve to internalize the sub"ect matter. 7owever, study grou!s canbecome very ineffective if they're not structured and if grou!s members come un!re!ared. %ffectivestudents use study grou!s effectively.

    10. Review your notes schoolwork and other class materials over the weekend.Successful students review what they've learned during the week over the weekend. This way they'rewell !re!ared to continue learning new conce!ts that build u!on !revious coursework and knowledgeac1uired the !revious week.
