10 GREAT DAYS, 10 GREAT WINES,
10 GREAT STORIES. The Calgary Stampede is an extraordinary story -‐ an event that has come to represent a defining part of this great city and its people. At its heart it pays homage to the pioneer days that Calgary was founded upon -‐ the Wild West, frontier lands, stories of hard work, unyielding perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and western hospitality. Paying tribute to this rich and proud history, while ensuring we embrace this heritage as we write the next chapters of our story, is what we celebrate during these ten incredible days. To embrace this spirit we hand-‐selected ten amazing wines, each with a story that connects to and celebrates a part of the Stampede experience…the days of cowboys, our First Nations and outlaws, the farmers that toiled these lands, the Canadian success stories that rose and continue to rise, the music that brings us together, the horses that remain icons of our western heritage, the business deals that are made, the passion that flows, the charitable spirit that brings thousands of volunteers together, and the hope for those fleeting moments of perfection that we will always remember. We hope you enjoy!

30XSALOON
Stag’s Leap Viognier, Napa Valley, California 75
Stag’s Leap Winery takes its name after an ancient Wappo Indian legend whose Elders spoke of a grand, mystical buck endowed with magnificent antlers, whose leaping silhouette could only be seen during full moons. This wine celebrates that legend -‐ elegant and complex with a perfect balance of delicate floral and fruit aromas and the flavours of peach and apricot left lingering on the palette.
Mer Soleil Silver (Unoaked) Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands, California 75
For five generations the Wagner family has lived and loved the Napa Valley. Their love of land has led this family of farmers to nurture an extraordinary selection of wines, including the famous Caymus label. Charlie Wagner II continues this tradition as a fifth generation winemaker and his Silver Chardonnay pays tribute to the crisp essence of a classic Chablis, together with the tropical notes of a Pacific coast chardonnay.
19 Crimes Shiraz/Durif, Victoria, Australia 55
Stories abound of famous outlaws for whom the Wild West was a fiery playground. North America was not alone in its bandit heritage -‐ in fact the earliest settlers of Australia were those found guilty of one of 19 crimes (deeds ranging from theft to assault to impersonating an Egyptian). This wine celebrates the rules they broke and culture they built. Aromas of licorice, dark fruit and vanilla carry through with rich sweet fruit, ripe tannins and loads of personality.
Devil’s Advocate, Serendipity Winery, Naramata, British Columbia 88
The Stampede is a time to celebrate great Canadians. Judy Kingston, a winemaker from Okanagan Valley, is one of those worthy of celebrating. Her extraordinary story of overcoming adversity, boldly embracing the entrepreneurial spirit and tirelessly toiling the land has led to this exceptional award winning wine. Soft notes of pepper, a hint of black cherry, red licorice, leather and vanilla characterize this blend. As written on the bottle…“if you climb in the saddle, be ready for the ride”.
Eight Songs Shiraz, Peter Lehman, Barossa Valley, Australia 105
The Stampede is as much a celebration of music and art as it is cowboys and rodeo. Eight Songs was born out of that same love of music and was inspired by an operatic work first performed in the Barossa. This wine shows an elegant and distinctly softer side to Barossa Shiraz, with opulent fruit, velvety tannins, hints of dark plums and notes of chocolate.
Megahertz Cabernet Sauvignon, Bello Family Vineyards, Napa Valley, California 125
The mighty horse…at once powerful and intense, noble and majestic. The Stampede pays tribute to this beautiful animal and so does this wine. Named after a thoroughbred racehorse whose trademark style was coming from the back of the field to win in the homestretch, this wine reveals lovely depth in its expressive red fruit, with spices, mint and French oak nuances that develop in the glass.
Lust Zinfandel, Michael David Winery, Napa Valley, California 135
The Stampede means many things to many people…but perhaps one of the more uniting elements is the sense of playful passion that permeates these exhilarating ten days. Lust Zinfandel speaks to this passion. Each year only the most outstanding grapes are selected -‐ those displaying the ripe berry and spice expected from a Zinfandel. Great depth, deep colour, rich tannins and lusty chocolate make this a wine to remember.
The Oracle, Miner Family Winery, Stagecoach Vineyard, Napa Valley, California 200
Though full of fun, Stampede is also a time for business. Deals negotiated, networks expanded, relationships nurtured and hands shaken. The Oracle pays tribute to the art of the business deal. Named in homage to winemaker Dave Miner’s investment in one of the great success stories of technology, this wine is the perfect way to celebrate that new deal.
Ehlers Estate 1886 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 225
A profound belief in community, above all else, is what defines the Stampede experience. This spirit is echoed beautifully by Ehlers Estate, a winery whose profits are returned to the foundation it was bestowed to. Bold and silky tannins, flavours of chocolate, cherries, cinnamon and cocoa define this exceptional wine.
08’ Penfolds Grange Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia 1000
This story is simple…what better way to celebrate ten perfect days than with the perfect wine. Recently awarded a rare 100 points by Robert Parker, enjoy a moment of perfection in a glass with this Australian icon considered by many to be one of the world’s finest red wines. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, this immensely complex wine will seduce the senses.
THE DUKE’S LIST
Aficionados of the classic western movie know that “The Duke” refers to the one and only John Wayne -‐ considered by many as the icon who defined the on-‐screen cowboy. That trademark swagger, that grit, that charm, that character voice and grizzled face -‐ he has come to define an entire genre of movies. As we celebrate the story of real life cowboy’s at the Calgary Stampede it seemed only fitting to name our list of most rare and prized wines in his honour.
(…what you might not know however is how John Wayne got his nickname -‐ something he owes to his childhood dog in fact. It was indeed his huge Airedale Terrier that was called Duke, and when a neighbour nicknamed Wayne “Little Duke” in playful reference to his size compared to his big dog, the nickname stuck (well, he did manage to drop the “Little” part later on). And so this list also pays honour to all the big dogs out there that have the good fortune of enjoying one of these extraordinary wines.)
