Homework: Chapters 1213 by tomorrow

Do Now: Holden Caulfield is a polarizing character. Some read Holden's words and find inspiration and the true voice of a struggling youth. Others, to be honest, can't read past his whininess.

In your journal, tell me if you sympathize with Holden. Do you feel bad for him? Why or why not? Use story details.

1) We will be writing and completing creative short stories based on a pivotal moment on insight into Holden as a person.

2) We will be examining the chapters and pairing a song with the work in an effort to diversify the stimulus. What's that even mean?

Homework: Chapter 21 by Monday

Do Now: Depends on the day?

May 77:16 PM

Creative Everyday!   At the risk of summarizing, as we read through Chapter 46, we see a usually underachieving Holden decide to put his considerable academic skills to the test as he writes a descriptive paper for Stradlater. Of course, Ole Strad is not a fan and Holden immediately rips the paper up. Not much is known other than...

• The paper was about Allie's baseball glove (details page 38)• It was a "descriptive" paper on the object• Holden writes the story with the glove in his hands• He changes Allie's name in the story• Holden "likes writing about it" and he has a deep affection for Allie

• He writes it in an hour on a jamming typewriter• Holden gives Stradlater the paper, meaning Holden was probably proud

In 23 paragraphs, with as little other directions as possible, WRITE THE PAPER about Allie's glove.

May 77:16 PM

Objective: May 17

1) Examine a solid piece of writing

2) Journal work

2) Examine the chapters and pairing a song with the work in an effort to diversify the stimulus

Homework: Chapter 21 by Monday

Song choice by Monday...not all presented...thematic tie

Do Now: In a quick two sentences maximum, write the "descriptive" paper Holden would have written if it was his own assignment and not Stradlater's. As in, it can be implied he only wrote something because it wasn't expected of him. What would he have done for his own assignment?

May 77:16 PM

Objective: May 201) Do Now  Musical Ties2) Update our journals to be current with the chapters3) Presentations on some things

Homework: Continue with Chapters 1521 for tomorrow

Do Now: Over the weekend, you were to make a thematic connection between our novel and a song of your choice, much like I did with the Bob Dylan song. In the journal section of your notebooks, please write the name of the song you have chosen. Then, in a 35 sentences, please tell me the connections you see between the two pieces.

Homework: Continue the Times article with annotations

Do Now:We earlier described Catcher as a buildingsroman, or a comingofage story. If this is true, that term also implies a journey of some sort. What would you describe as Holden's journey? Where is he coming from and going to, physically and emotionally? What are the obstacles in his way? What are his tools to help him succeed?

May 77:16 PM

Group Work:

1. Bring along your song and annotations.

2. Onebyone, present your choice and findings to the group.

3. Pick one of the songs to present. This should be based on which song your groups feels is the best representation of themes found in the novel.

4. When presenting, tell the class of the song title, some important lines or overall concepts, and their thematic tie to the novel.

5. Your group will be assessed on the presentation of the single member.

May 77:16 PM

A SAMPLE SHORT STORY:Sentences of green crisscrossed, filling every square inch. Delicate little boyish letters danced around every curve, every concave. Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Elliot, Charles Bukowski, they all left their voices on this little lefthanded glove, a glove so worked out from not only use, but being looked at. It felt aged beyond its age, as if the poets, or perhaps the glove's user, had lent it wisdom...history. Cracked and hard to the touch, but oh so tiny, so sad to the eye, the glove suggested a hidden history and meaning. Deciphering it meant deciphering every curve, ever ridge, every stitch. But it warned against sacrilege. It wanted, or was wanted to be, frozen in time.

Connecting Literature: A Definable SkillThe context of the moment is Chief Bromden getting in trouble for having gum stuck to the bottom of his bed. Geever, an orderly, is

scraping the gum off as Chief tries to sleep. McMurphy wakes up to Chief getting scolded for chewing on old gum too much, so in true-McMurphy fashion he attempts to lighten the mood. He sings a funny cowboy song and Chief is simply unable to hold in his laughter, and thereby proves for the first time that he is not deaf, only pretending to be so. He and McMurphy have a long conversation, presumably Chief’s first in years. After the conversation and as McMurphy turns over and begins falling back to sleep, Chief narrates the following:

…He’s layin’ awful quiet, I told myself, I ought to touch him to see if he’s still alive…

That’s a lie. I know he’s still alive. That ain’t the reason I want to touch him.

I want to touch him because he is a man.

That’s a lie too. There’s other men around. I could touch them.

I want to touch him because I’m one of these queers!

But that’s a lie too. That’s one fear hiding behind another. If I was one of these queers I’d want to do other things with him. I just want to touch him because he’s who he is.

But as I was about to reach over to that arm he said, “Say, Chief,” and rolled in bed with a lurch of covers, facing me, “Say, Chief, why don’t you come on this fishing trip with us tomorrow?” (222)
