The Steelers game begins a stretch over the next three games where the Browns face six of the past nine Super Bowl champions in Pittsburgh (10/17), New Orleans (10/24) and New England (11/7). So far this season, the Browns have faced the second toughest schedule in the league as their opponents have a combined 16-7 (.696) record. Cleveland continues its stretch of facing some of the most elite quarterbacks in the NFL. The seven quarterbacks the Browns are scheduled to face from Weeks 4-11 have a combined 335-186 (.643) career record, including this week’s opponent Ben Roethlisberger, who is 60-26 (.698) as a starter. The Browns have faced the Steelers more than any other team in franchise history with 114 regular season matchups. Pittsburgh holds a 58-56 edge in the all-time series with a 36- 21 advantage at home. The teams split the season series last year with the Steelers taking the first meeting, 27-14, at Heinz Field. In the next meeting, Cleveland snapped a 12-game los- ing streak to Pittsburgh with a 13-6 decision. In the contest, the Browns sacked quarterback Ben Roethlisberger eight times and the Cleveland ground attack outgained Pittsburgh 171-77. Cleveland fell to 1-4 on the season following a 20-10 set- back against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. Running back Peyton Hillis became the first Browns player to record a touchdown in five consecutive games since Earnest Byner did it in six straight games in 1985. Hillis’ five total touchdowns this season are tied for fourth in the NFL and his four rushing scores are tied for third in the league. He leads the team with 350 rushing yards and is second on the club with 20 receptions. His reception total is tied fourth among all NFL running backs. Defensively, Cleveland stopped Atlanta on all three trips to the red zone. The Browns are second in the NFL in red zone defense as they have allowed just four touchdowns in 14 pos- sessions. The Browns are the only team in the NFL to not allow a rushing touchdown this year. Dating back to 2009, Cleveland has not allowed a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games. It is the team’s longest such streak since 1992 when the Browns didn’t allow a rushing touchdown in 11 consecu- tive games. Defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman registered his NFL- leading third fumble recovery of the season and linebacker Marcus Benard recorded a sack and has a team-leading 3.5 on the season. Linebacker Scott Fujita turned in his second straight game with a strip-sack and linebacker Matt Roth re- corded a career-high eight tackles. On special teams, defensive back T.J. Ward blocked a 30- yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, marking the sec- ond straight game in which Cleveland has blocked a field goal. THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ERIC MANGINIEric Mangini was named the 12th full-time head coach in the history of the Cleveland Browns franchise on January 8, 2009. For Mangini, it marked a return to his NFL roots, having kicked off his tenure in the league as a ball boy and an in-tern in the Browns’ public relations department in 1994. His tireless work ethic was just as evident in that fi rst year as it is today, a quality that led then-head coach Bill Belichick to add Mangini to

the team’s coaching staff in 1995. In his 15 years of NFL coaching experi-ence, Mangini has been a part of six teams that qualifi ed for the playoffs, including fi ve that captured division crowns and three that came away with the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions. During his fi rst year at the helm in Cleveland, Mangini displayed a sense of resiliency that rubbed off on his team and led to the Browns winning their fi nal four games of the year. Prior to being hired by the Browns, Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets (2006-08). In 2006, Mangini took over a team that had gone 4-12 the previous year and guided them to a record of 10-6 and a Wild Card playoff berth. The Jets started with a 5-5 mark before compiling victories in fi ve of their last six contests, including their fi nal three. Prior to joining the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-05). His fi rst fi ve seasons were spent as de-fensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to defensive coor-dinator in 2005. Mangini’s fi rst coaching opportunity came in 1995 as an assistant on the Browns’ staff. Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. Mangini was an assistant coach with the Jets under head coach Bill Parcells from 1997-99.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS - MIKE TOMLINMike Tomlin was named the 16th head coach in Pittsburgh Steelers history on January 22, 2007. Tomlin became only the third head coach hired by the Steelers since 1969, while becoming the youngest head coach in NFL history to coach in and win a Super Bowl, when he led the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Tomlin is one of only seven coaches in league history to win a Super Bowl

within his fi rst two seasons as an NFL head coach. By leading the Steelers to a 9-7 record in 2009, Tomlin became only the second Steelers’ head coach to post winning records after each of his fi rst three seasons. Prior to joining the Steelers, Tomlin spent the 2006 season as the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator, after spending the previous fi ve seasons (2001-05) as defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to joining Tampa Bay’s staff, Tomlin served two seasons as the defen-sive backs coach at the University of Cincinnati (1999-00). He began his coaching career in 1995 as wide receivers coach at Virginia Military In-stitute.

Led by eight sacks compiled by the defense, the Browns topped the Steelers 13-6, for the fi rst time since 2003. Sacks on Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger by defensive lineman Corey Williams and defensive back Hank Poteat caused the Steelers fi rst two possessions to stall, allowing the Browns to strike fi rst on a 29-yard fi eld goal by kicker Phil Dawson. Daw-son’s fi eld goal was set up by a 55-yard punt return by wide receiver Joshua Cribbs. Dawson added his second 29-yard fi eld goal of the night, following a 36-yard drive by the Browns. On the ensuing possession by Pittsburgh, Roethlisberger was sacked twice, with Williams and rookie Marcus Benard both posting their second sacks of the evening. With Cribbs running the Wildcat, Cleveland marched 74 yards down the fi eld, capped off by a 10-yard rush into the end zone by running back Chris Jennings. Pittsburgh rounded out the half with a 27-yard fi eld goal by kicker Jeff Reed. The Steelers added a 42-yard fi eld goal in the third quarter. Cribbs and Jennings totaled 87 and 73 rushing yards, respectively. Cribbs also added 104 total return yards, while punter Reggie Hodges posted four punts inside the 20-yard line. Cleveland’s defense held Pittsburgh to 75 net rushing yards and have held their opponents to under 100 net rushing yards in back-to-back games for the fi rst time since 2006.

ROOKIE WATCHThe Browns top two draft choices, defensive backs Joe Haden and T.J. Ward have already made their impact felt with the team on both defense and special teams. Ward leads the club with 38 tackles, including being the top tackler in three of the fi ve games this season. He also forced a fumble against the Buccaneers (9/12). Haden has totaled 11 tackles and is tied for second on the team with three passes defensed. Both Ward and Haden are tied for second on the team with fi ve special teams tackles each. • The Browns haven’t won consecutive games against the Steelers since a 16-15 victory on November 14, 1999 and a 23-20 decision on September 17, 2000.

DB Sheldon Brown...• Has appeared in all 133 regular season games in his career,

which began with Philadelphia in 2002. His streak is the second-longest among all active defensive backs.

WR/KR Joshua Cribbs… • With 10 total touchdowns via return in his career, needs one

return touchdown to tie Devin Hester (11) for fourth, two to tie Dante Hall and Eric Metcalf (12) for second and three to tie Brian Mitchell for fi rst place on the NFL all-time career list.

• With 8,510 career total return yards, needs 200 more to pass Ron Smith for 11th on the career list.

K Phil Dawson…• Would take sole possession of fi rst place on the Browns’

all-time fi eld goal made list with one more. He is currently tied with Lou Groza with 234.

• Would reach 1,000 career points with 10 more. Would join Lou Groza and Don Cockroft as the only Browns players to reach that mark.

RB Peyton Hillis…• Has recorded a touchdown in fi ve consecutive games. With

one more, he would be the fi rst Browns player to record a touchdown in six consecutive games since Earnest Byrner in 1985.

OL Joe Thomas…• Has started all 53 career games and has not missed an of-

fensive snap since joining the Browns as the third overall pick in the 2007 draft.

NOT SO FREQUENT FLYERS

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers, Regular Season Week 6, Game 6 -11-

ERIC MANGINI SAID...(On the Atlanta game)- “I thought the guys played hard throughout the course of the game. I thought we had some different injuries at different points and guys tried to fi ght through them and overcome them. With Seneca (Wallace) going down and Jake (Delhomme) going in, I thought Jake did well for him being limited, in terms of what we could do. He’s made progress, but it’s still a pretty limited package. Really though, what we need to be able to do is run the ball more effectively and consistently week in and week out and stop the run. This is a team, in the Falcons, that has two very good backs, a very good offensive line and a commitment to the running game. We can’t let those short runs turn into long runs like the one that (Michael) Turner had. We need to be able to consistently learn to run the ball and balance things off. For us, we have to go back, look at the things we need to fi x and get ready for another really tough game next week.”

(On this year’s team compared to last year’s team)- “I think the most important word you said there is team. I really think that the chemistry with this group is very good. I really think that they view themselves as a team. They support each other. They care about what they do. That’s not taking anything away from the people that were here last year, but that takes time to get to that point. I like the locker room. I like the group of guys. I like the way that they work together. I like the way that they push each other. Now we are going to get tested and there’s going to be adversity. There’s going to be a lot of things that defi ne a team. I believe in this group of guys that when those tests come, they will respond the right way.”

(On if Floyd Womack and Tony Pashos could be the combination on the right side of the offense line for the rest of the season)- “I think they’ve done a nice job. I said that when Tony wasn’t starting, that I felt completely comfortable if he came in and that was a good situation to have. He’s really done a great job since he’s been in there. We are getting Shawn (Lauvao) back this week and Shawn has been getting back in the swing of things. Nobody is going to roll over and play dead and let you take their spot. He’s got his work to do and the nice thing about Shawn is he is going to work at it and he is going to keep pushing for play time, which is what I would expect and which is what I would want.”

(On T.J. Ward)- “The thing that I really like about T.J. Ward is even if he is unsure about where he is going, he’s going there fast and when he gets there someone is going to get hit. Sometimes you are going to be wrong, but if you are wrong and you’re doing it as quickly as you can and someone gets hit at the end of the play those types of mistakes sometimes actually have a way of working out. It’s when you’re unsure and you sort of get stuck in mud that you have bigger issues. He’s confi dent. He backs that up with the way that he works. He’s bright and he likes to hit people which I appreciate.”

(On if he likes that the defense is getting a tough attitude)- “Yes, I love that. That’s what you want. You want as much of that as you possibly can get. You want to make them go the long, hard way, but as they’re going, there’s a price to pay for each completion. There’s a price to pay for each run. That’s what you want it to be and to look like. We’re working at that and we’re making steps towards that. Robaire (Smith) is a physical, tough guy. Kenyon (Coleman) is a tough guy. (Ahtyba) Rubin is a tough guy. There are a lot of tough guys in that group and if you can play smart, tough, physical football across the board, that’s a good thing. That goes a long way. I’m not leaving anybody out defensively, we could keep going with the guys. I think Sheldon Brown is a presence in the running game. Joe Haden, one of the best things he did in college was hitting and tack-ling. You keep adding those guys to the pile. You want it to be costly.”

(On if Peyton Hillis’ running style)- “I think one of the things he does re-ally well is lower his shoulder on contact and drive forward. Often times, he is the guy that’s delivering the blow. You see some upright runners where they just get tattooed because they don’t ever lower their shoulders, they don’t get that leverage going forward and those hits tend to add up more quickly. Where with Peyton, I think it’s different because a lot of times he is the one applying force, applying leverage. He does have pretty good short area quickness for a guy his size where he can makes some people miss. I think it’s more apparent in the passing game where your catching some of those balls out in the fl at makes the guy miss. He’s got that as well which is a little deceptive based on his size.”

(On why he likes the 3-4 defense)- “There is the fi rst and second down component where I think the main reason I like it is because it is balanced and you have fl exibility with which rushes you bring and how you want to cover. Then to take those outside linebackers and be able to bring them into sub downs, I think that adds fl exibility because you can switch roles easier. This time I’m rushing, you’re covering, and they’re all guys that are used to covering and rushing as opposed to trying to drop defensive linemen or switch with them it gets a little harder.”

(On getting production from Chansi Stuckey)- “Chansi is a guy that we traded for and I saw his development in New York and I really liked him. I think that he can continue to evolve as a core part of our passing game. He’s made some plays throughout the course of the year and throughout the preseason. To me, he’s a young guy still. His fi rst year, he didn’t play in New York. He was on IR. He’s going to continue to keep getting better. He’s got good short-area quickness, he’s a really bright guy, he has got a good ability to get open in zone. I’m happy for him and I’m happy for us that it’s starting to emerge.”

(On where Alex Mack stands in his second season)- “I think that Alex is light years ahead of where he was at this point last year in terms of his ability to operate the offense and the offensive line. His comfort level is much higher. At this point, this is game four of his rookie career and he was swimming. Now, he’s comfortable in that position and he’s made some really smart calls and he recognizes things quicker. Not that he didn’t do that last year, it’s just he’s a year into it now. It’s his 20th straight start for us, which is not easy to do coming in and playing that position. The other thing I like about Alex is he gets the whole concept of working on weaknesses and making sure that you get those right, and he plays with a tremendous motor. You can see him on some of those downhill plays or screens where he is getting into the second level. He’s in the screen, he’s running, he’s helping make things happen. To me, that’s a great trait. I think that with him, he’ll get better each year because of who he is. You add experience to that, he’ll continue to grow in that spot.”

(On making improvements week to week)- “One of the things that I talked to the players a lot about, win or lose, you come in and you look at the tape and you draw value from the experience. You draw value from whatever happened and it only has value if you can take that information and apply it to the next time that you play and you stay consistent with the approach. Often times in a post-game analysis, if you win you can gloss over some things that have to be fi xed. If you lose, you can harp on some things overly so. It was a good chance for me to go through that process again.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTES

LB Marcus Bernard(On the ‘bend, but don’t break’ defense)- “We’re a tough defense and if you can’t see that, then you haven’t been watching. There’s nothing about us that is fl uky, none of that. You know we’re a tough defense and any team that’s come in here and we’ve seen they respect us, regardless of what they say. You’ve got to respect this defense because we’re going to hit you hard, no matter what you do. You score on a long drive, well, come on back and do it again because we’re going to hit you in the mouth next time. We’re going to work.”

(On staying tough)- “That’s what Eric Mangini brought in. That’s what our coaches brought in, smart, tough guys and it shows. We don’t bend, plays happen, big plays happen. It’s the NFL. It’s full of the greatest players in the world so you can’t expect for a big play not to happen. If you slip, he’s going to score because he’s good, he’s got a job to, he’s got a family to feed. But, we’re a tough defense.”

K Phil Dawson(On what it feels like to tie the franchise record for made fi eld goals)- “I have a lot of mixed emotions. I would trade it for a win. I am guarded to say anything too remarkable about the accomplishment because this is a team game. It’s just the way I approach it but it would be doing Mr. Groza a disservice to just blow it off. He’s a Hall of Famer, he’s in the Ring of Honor and he’s a legend, especially in Ohio. He grew up in Berea and was an Ohio State Buckeye, so out of respect for him, this is a tremendous honor. Like I said early last week, it is something that I’ve had my eye on since day one. To fi nally get here through it all, to have my wife and two boys here and my daughter back home watching on TV, that is pretty neat.”

(On being a teammate and leader)- “I have a great amount of respect for my teammates. When it is all said and done, a lot of these fi eld goals people aren’t going to remember, but they will remember how you conducted yourself. That’s always been very important to me. I’ve got a name on the back of my jersey that my dad and grand-dad passed on to me. It is very important that I take that name and pass it on to my kids. So to have the guys, not so much the football aspect, but just to talk about the character, that’s the part that means the most.”

QB Jake Delhomme(On the play of Peyton Hillis)- “He’s doing a great job. We’ve all known what he can do, I think people on the out-side really have not. He’s a big bruiser obviously, he’s pretty nimble and he runs downhill. Anytime you run downhill, you’re falling forward and you’re gaining that extra yard or two per carry. He’s doing a great job, but I think they’re a great one-two punch, naturally, with him and Jerome (Har-rison). I think the offensive line played really well. I think Lawrence Vickers is one that really doesn’t get the credit that he deserves with the attitude that he brings and what he does from the fullback position.”

RB Peyton Hillis(On his favorite thing about running the ball)- “Just mov-ing the ball, converting the fi rst downs and putting points on the board. That’s what really counts, that’s what really mat-ters. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who you knock down or whatever, but it’s who puts the most points on the board at the very end. The more that you can run, the more that you can convert those fi rst downs, the more time of pos-session you can have to rest your defense, the better you are going to be off.”

OL Joe Thomas(On if being able to run the ball well will help them suc-ceed)- “I think so. I think for us, on offense, we want to be able to run the ball. I think if we can successfully kind of grind the ball through four quarters, give our defense a chance to rest and open up some things in the passing game, I think we are going to have more successes than failures.”

QB Seneca Wallace(On Peyton Hillis)- “He is always huge. He is a physical back and runs hard and especially in this league, you need that. You need a guy who can run hard between the tackles. He is always going forward, you never see him going back-wards. He is gaining an inch or two inches, a yard here and there, that’s what you need. We always have to be able to get something positive on fi rst down. Giving him the ball and watching him run along with Vick (Lawrence Vickers), you can’t leave Vick out of that, he is a huge fullback and emotional leader for us.”

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco connected with wide receiver Anquan Boldin for three scores en route to a, 24-17 victory against the Cleveland Browns in AFC North play. The Browns struck fi rst with a 38-yard fi eld goal by kicker Phil Dawson on their fi rst offensive posses-sion. Baltimore responded with an 85-yard after Flacco hit Boldin from eight yards out. The touchdown catch made Boldin the fastest ever to reach 600 career receptions. The Ravens repeated the formula in the second quarter when Flacco and Boldin hooked up for another touchdown from 12 yards out on a 10 play, 93-yard drive. The Browns were able to answer back before the half with an 11 play, 83-yard drive that was capped off with a one-yard run by running back Peyton Hillis. The touchdown was the fi rst scored on the Ravens’ defense in 2010. After a scoreless third quarter, the Browns took the lead on the fi rst play in the fourth on a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace to tight end Benjamin Watson that completed a six play, 86-yard drive. Baltimore regained the lead for good on the third touchdown pass from Flacco to Boldin midway through the fourth and stretched the lead when kicker Billy Cundiff hit a fi eld goal from 49 yards out. BROWNS 23BENGALS 20

October 3, 2010Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio

The Cleveland Browns used a powerful running game and big plays on defense to capture their fi rst win of the 2010 season with a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. After kicker Phil Dawson connected on the only score of the fi rst quarter, a 30-yard fi eld goal, tight end Even Moore snagged his fi rst-career touchdown on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace early in the second, which capped off an 87-yard drive. The Bengals got on the board on the next possession after kicker Mike Nugent hit from 24 yards out. Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer connected with wide receiver Terrell Owens for a 78-yard touchdown, the longest of Palmer’s career, midway through the second to tie the game at 10-10. Dawson hit a 31-yard fi eld goal to give Cleveland a 13-10 lead as time expired in the second quarter. The Browns scored on their fi rst possession of the second half capped off by a one-yard run by running back Peyton Hillis. On the ensuing Bengals possession, linebacker Scott Fujita sacked Palmer and forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman and led to another Dawson fi eld goal. Cincinnati added two more scores and threatened for a third but a sack by linebacker Matt Roth on third and 13 kept the Bengals out of fi eld goal range. The Browns were able to hold the ball for the fi nal 4:41 powered by the running game as Hillis ran the ball on six consecutive plays, including a 24-yard run to seal the victory. Peyton Hillis totaled 102 rushing yards on 27 carries with one touchdown, marking his second consecutive 100-yard performance and third of his career. Hillis became the fi rst Browns player to record a rushing touchdown in four consecutive games since Greg Pruitt did it in fi ve straight games in 1975.

FALCONS 20BROWNS 10

October 10, 2010Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio

The Atlanta Falcons rushed for 165 yards and forced three turnovers to secure a 20-10 road victory against the Cleveland Browns. After a scoreless opening quarter, Atlanta got on the board fi rst with a 24-yard Matt Bryant fi eld goal early in the second. Cleveland responded with a touchdown on the ensuing possession when quarterback Seneca Wallace connected with running back Peyton Hillis for a 19-yard pass, giving Hillis a touchdown in each of the fi rst fi ve games of the season. After another Bryant fi eld goal made it 7-6 before the end of the half, Wallace was sacked by defensive end John Abraham and was injured, forcing Jake Delhomme to see his fi rst action since an injury in the season opener four weeks earlier. The Browns forced a turnover on the Falcons’ fi rst possession of the second half when linebacker Scott Fujita sacked quarterback Matt Ryan and forced a fumble that was recovered by defen-sive end Kenyon Coleman, which lead to a 19-yard fi eld goal by kicker Phil Dawson to extend the lead to 10-6. The Falcons quickly struck back when Ryan hooked up with wide receiver Roddy White for a 45-yard touchdown pass on the Falcons’ next possession to take a 13-10 lead. Atlanta extended its lead to 20-10 late in the fourth when defensive end Kroy Biermann tipped a Delhomme pass to himself for a diving interception which he returned 31-yards for a touchdown, the fi rst of his career. Atlanta running back Michael Turner ran for 140 yards in the game, snapping a streak of six straight games where Cleveland had not allowed a 100-yard rusher. With his third quarter fi eld goal, Dawson tied Hall of Famer Lou Groza for the Browns’ franchise record for fi eld goals made at 234.
