When you see: ¼ - Think QUARTERS! 1/10 - Think DIMES!

If I have 6 quarters, how much money do I have? - $1.50 - How do I write that as an improper fraction? - 6/4 - Mixed Number? - 1 2/4 = 1 ½ How about if I had 12 dimes? - $1.20 - Improper fraction = 12/10 - Mixed number = 1 2/10 = 1 1/5

BACK TO NUMERATOR AND DENOMINATOR

Denominator - Shows how many parts make up a whole - Ex: ¾ = 4 parts make up the whole, and we have 3 parts Numerator - Shows how many parts we have in total - Ex: We have eight slices of pizza in total and each pizza is cut in 4 slices (whole pizza is 4 parts) - = 8/4 = 2 pizzas! YUM!
