What is SPEA?

Saskatchewan Physical Education

Association

The Saskatchewan Physical Education Association is a provincial non-profit incorporated organization that provides

quality leadership, advocacy and resources for professionals in physical and health education in order to positively influence

the lifestyles of Saskatchewan’s children and youth. The main objective of the organization is to promote and

support active healthy lifestyles through the development of physical education, recreation and sport at all levels of the

educational system. 2

The GoalThe goal of QDPE is to provide skills and attitudes to make active living a

way of life in which physical activity is valued in daily life.

Quality Daily Physical Education includes the following:

Instructional Component

Meets Sask. Ministry of Education’s Curriculum Guidelines

A minimum of 150 minutes of Physical Education per 5 day week

Offers an Intramural program with a wide range of activities

Offers an Inter School Program Grades 7-12

If you are a QDPE school, you may apply for our banner award. You only need to be following the Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines.

This attractive banner will be sent to your school free of charge.

Each year thereafter, upon application, you will receive a year patch to place on your banner

to recognize your continued efforts in being a QDPE school.

This kit consists of two large containers filled with innovative equipment.

Activities designed for limited spaces such as the classroom or hallway.

Activities designed for large spaces such as the gymnasium or outdoors.

Speed StacksKit # 2

Sport Stacking is a track meet for your hands at warp speed.

It’s an exciting individual or team sport where participants stack and unstack 12 specially designed high-tech cups in predetermined pyramids .

Stackers race against the clock, head to head or in team relays.

Disc GolfKit #3

The sport of Disc Golf has evolved from recreational Frisbee throwing.

It similar to traditional golf.

A disc golf set consists of a driver, mid-range drive and a putter, each disc having a specific purpose.

The object is to complete each hole in the fewest throws.

After tee off, each throw is made from the previous landing spot, the challenge being to accurately propel the disc from various distances toward the intended target.

Jumbo Stacks are a perfect way to turn up the fun and add more movement at the same time.

Floor relays and doubles stacking are a whole new challenge with these large scale cups. One cup is 27cm high x 23 cm wide

Three different color sets of 12 jumbo cups each and a stack mat/timer are included so the whole class can participate at once.

Stack Spots are a popular type of floor marker used in P.E. classes to indicate a place to do a specific activity.Stack Spots combine Sport Stacking activities with fitness activities to further enhance the fitness aspects of sport stacking.

Moving To Inclusion

The purpose of Moving To Inclusion is to provide physical education and activity leaders a tool that will help them include individuals with disabilities in a

wide variety of physical sport programs. Regardless of the environment – recreational, competitive, educational, or fitness and wellness pursuits – one

should expect and be ready to offer enjoyable and satisfying opportunities to all individuals, including those with disabilities.

This kit contains a complete version of ten disability specific manuals, “Inclusive Games & Sports” manual, adapted lesson plans and many inclusive pieces of

equipment to try with your students.

Loaner kits are available to all SPEA members for a 3 week pre determined schedule.

SPEA memberships cost $25.00 annually or a student membership cost is $10.00 annually

An information package will be sent to you prior to receiving a kit.

Kits will arrive by bus prior to your booking.

Before using the kits, fill out the inventory sheet provided

All kits have a 3 week pre-determined use period – Keeping Everyone Active has a 6 week pre-determined use period

When your booked time is over, do another inventory count.

Fax the completed inventory sheet to the SPEA office and ship the kit by bus to the next user.

The school using the equipment pays the bus charges to send the kit to the next school.

Any lost or broken items will be invoiced to the user.

Annual Provincial Conference

Held the first Wednesday – Friday in May –Hosted in Saskatoon or Regina.

Conference includes a variety of practical and theoretical sessions geared to both the generalist and specialist teacher of physical education in elementary and secondary schools.

Excellent opportunity for professional development, networking and socializing creating fresh ideas for your school

SPEA members have the opportunity to apply for Professional Development Assistance to attend our conference.

Paul Renwick Award - Outstanding contribution to physical education

QDPE Professional of the Year Award – works within a QDPE school, implements QDPE, promotes QDPE and personally lives a QDPE lifestyle

Local Initiative Awards – 5 recipients, one in each region of the province displaying significant achievements in physical education

SPEA Scholarships – 2 recipients, high school graduates enrolled in the College of Education (physical education major or minor) or College of Kinesiology

Book Awards – 4 recipients chosen by College of Education U of S and U of R and College of Kinesiology U of S and U of R

PHE Canada Dr. Andy Anderson Young Professional Award –is given to one individual per province that best epitomizes exemplary work on behalf of the profession.

PHE Canada Physical Education Teaching Excellence Award (PETE) - for teachers that provide outstanding teaching performance at the elementary, middle and secondary levels, and who have an exceptional ability to motivate students to participate in a lifetime of physical activity.

PHE Canada Health Educator Award – honors an individual for their work to further the importance of health education in Canada
