Affirming, Perpetuating, and Validating Indigenous, Native American Students' Culture and Languages (K-12)APS Indian Education Department's Zuni language teacher will provide presentation attendees with a broad overview of NM's Indigenous, Native American languages and its' unique culture and highlight specific time periods in the development of American Indian Education that is juxtaposed with the history of United States. As NM public school educators, it is our responsibility to educate and advocate for the accountability, understanding, and respect that should be afforded to our Indigenous, Native American community with whom our colleagues, programs and departments work towards culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning. It is through this understanding, therefore, that we begin in APS to build a baseline of critical consciousness in affirming, perpetuating, and validating Indigenous, Native American students' culture and home languages of Indigenous nations and Indigenous Peoples in New Mexico. The presentation will be supported with Google slide visuals; Indigenous, Native American culture and language resources will be provided for further inquiry and research. Return to session schedule

Amplifying Diverse Student Voices and Experiences Through Digital Technology (K-12)Transactional and transformative learning occurs when teachers bring to fore student voices; in order words, position students as key drivers in the learning process. Accordingly, leveraging 21st Century [digital] technology, not only provides opportunities for teachers to create and deliver innovative learning experiences, but also afford an important 'cultural capital' for all students to become active, empowered learners and stakeholders in their communities (Kapitzke, 2000). This presentation is explored through the lens of two historically underserved young learners. Return to session schedule

The Hidden Curriculum (K-12)Our ideologies, beliefs, and assumptions guide us as teachers to emphasize or neglect certain components in our curriculum. Sometimes, the emphasis or neglect is intentional, and other times, it is done unconsciously. This creates, as Apple (2004) describes, a “hidden curriculum,” one that we are often not aware of, but one that deeply influences our classroom. In this Lunch & Learn session, let’s discuss our “hidden curriculum” and the influences it may have on diverse learners. Return to session schedule
