Bibliographic Databases. On-line search strategy

Search a bibliographic database (i.e. Cinahl) Use the citation & abstract to decide if relevant. Locate the Journal (or book) If it is an on-line journal that the UoY subscribe to –

you must access it via a UoY computer. Go to the Journal web site and view/download the

article. If it is not available online (or not subscribed to)

make your request through the Library. REMEMBER: most databases DO NOT link

directly to on-line journals

What to do now? What to do now?

Student Self Directed Work: In groups of 3 explore the following

bibliographic databases. AMED British Nursing Index Cinahl

Find the online Journal of Advanced Nursing by using the Library metalib service then skim read an article.

Finding Journal Articles Do these tasks in your groups (3) Each member of the group will need to

locate a journal article (3+1 = 4 in total). Don’t use a search engine (no Googling). Use UoY Databases and e-journal web sites. Use Metalib – (You will need Athens). You will find some results in CINAHL & BNI

Page 15: 1 University of York Department of Health Sciences Journals & Databases By Ian Cole Lecturer in C&IT Last updated 6/4/04

15

Thinks to remember You as a group decide how to manage the task. Think about the information you have – do you

really need to use a database to fine each journal.

I’m here to confirm you got it right. Think which databases will be best to use. Think about the Journal title (if it is known). Open each article online (if you can). Complete each reference for each article.
