HOLISTIC STEWARSHIP SEASON: Our Parish continues to be in the midst of its annual review and renewal of its holistic
stewardship exercise. Holistic stewardship is recognition and acknowledgment in thanksgiving that everything we have is
gift from God. All our gifts of time, talent and treasure are on loan to us by the Giver of all good gifts. Our appropriate
response to the Gift-Giver is lovingly sharing a generous proportion of those gifts in fulfillment of the two great
commandments.
Our Parish has just completed its annual renewal and review exercise of time and talent sharing. Thanks to all who
have completed the Time and Talent Pledge/registration in making a first-time commitment or new commitment during these
past weeks. Our thanks to all parishioners who remain actively involved in the diverse range of ministries active and
flourishing in our Parish.
During these next weeks, our Parish is entering into its annual review and renew exercise of the annual tithe/pledge in
the Yes, Lord stewardship of treasure. The ideal measure or standard of generous proportional giving being promoted by
our Parish Stewardship & Development Council is the 10% tithe based on gross income. In Catholic practice the 10%
tithe is broken down into 5% of a parishioner’s total tithe to the local Parish and 5% to other charities (second collections,
Annual Catholic Appeal, Our Faith, Our Hope, Our Future, Haiti mission, St. Vincent de Paul, Project Outreach, etc, etc).
Next week all parishioners will be receiving the Yes, Lord mailing for the annual tithe/pledge.
Parishioners with No Record of Giving: All parishioners who have no recorded offertory gift over this past year are asked to
consider a $1 to $5 regular weekly offering. If there is some significant hardship situation that might prevent a parishioner
from this minimal level of giving, you are asked to contact me personally or any member of the parish pastoral staff at 747-
1321.
COMMITMENT TIME FOR NEW MINISTRY SIGN-UPS: This weekend, October 22nd & 23rd, concluded our annual
general opportunity for parishioners to share their gifts of time and talent with the Parish community. Completed Parish
ministry/service registrations can still be turned into the Parish office this week. The initial sign-ups represent the broad
spectrum of ministries active in the Parish. Our Parish welcomes all these gifts into active service in the Lord’s name as well as
the many, many others who remain actively involved in the broad range of ministries alive in our Parish.
PARISH FINANCES ACCOUNTABILITY REPORTING: At all Masses on this weekend, Steve Contreras, our Parish
Business Manager, shared an accountability presentation on our year-end report from July 2015 through June 2016. Fuller
details of the report are shared in the bulletin for your study and reflection. The support of our parish through our parishioner’s
Sunday stewardship/tithe giving sustains our MCS mission (Message, Community, Service) and all of our ministries and
activities as a parish. Transparent accountability has to be an integral part of this relationship, and the reporting through the
PowerPoint presentation at all Masses this weekend and through the bulletin are an intentional effort toward this transparency.
Our thanks to all parishioners who faithfully and consistently share the first fruits of their blessings back to God through regular
stewardship/tithe Sunday offertory giving. Contributions for the 16 weeks fiscal year-to-date are $18,324 per week or -3.6%
below budget, or a $10,819 shortfall.
INCOME/BUDGET PLATEAU: Our stewardship/tithe weekly income seems to have reached a plateau. Overall support of
the annual operational budget seems to be adequate for now. Recognizing the plateau reality, our current year’s budget has
been adjusted to $19,000 a week income – a decrease of $500 a week from last year’s budget. This has been attained through
some reorganization. Our regular givers are encouraged to consider a dollar per week increase in their giving during the
upcoming “Yes, Lord” annual stewardship/tithe campaign. Non-givers on our parish roster are invited to consider beginning a
weekly giving within a $1 to $5 range. Our deepest thanks to all who are regular and faithful supporters of our parish.
SACRIFICIAL GIVING: Because of challenging times, the Sunday stewardship of tithing/treasure for many of our
parishioners continues to be quite sacrificial. Thanks to all who are sustaining their support of the Parish through the Sunday
offertory and to all who are doing their best. Our annual “Yes, Lord” renewal of the tithe of treasure during these next weeks
will give all of us an opportunity to review their annual pattern of giving in support of the Parish. There will be different levels
of response. For some, because of the difficult times, their giving will remain the same, or even may have to adjust
accordingly. For those who may have experienced some measure of increased financial blessings, this “Yes, Lord” time will
become an occasion to consider sharing an increase of support with the parish through Sunday offertory giving. For those who
have no record of giving in support of the Parish and who can, this “Yes, Lord” time will become an occasion for new
beginnings in sharing some of the Lord’s blessings for the work of the Parish through the weekly Sunday offertory.

Luke 18:9-14
Jesus tells today’s parable to the men and women
disciples who are following him to Jerusalem. The parable
creates room for them and for us to assess where we fit
between these two contrasting examples of prayer.
Outward signs of piety do not make the Pharisee an insider
with God, nor does sinful self-interest place the tax
collector beyond God’s mercy. Perhaps among Jesus’
disciples some are making negative judgments about
others. The parable invites them to see themselves in its
mirror.
The parable asks us to recognize how we affect one
another. It has the spirit of the prayer at Mass leading into
the Sign of Peace: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I
give you, look not on our sins but on the faith of your
Church.” We should find comfort in other people having
faith when we don’t.
Neither character is faultless. The pious one is
boastful; the exploitive one is humble. Both raise questions
to ask ourselves. Who do we praise in our prayer, God or
ourselves? Does the mercy we seek from God really lead
us to change, to stop exploiting people who are poor, to see
reconciliation with those we hurt? In the end, perhaps the
parable is really about God and the abundant mercy God
has for all of us. Pope Francis urges us in this Jubilee Year
of Mercy “constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy.
It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation
depends on it.”

Thanksgiving
Dinner Outreach
Thanksgiving Tree — This year the Christian Life
Commission is sponsoring the Thanksgiving Dinner
Tree. There are many families in Our Mother of
Sorrows parish, and in our neighborhood, that cannot
afford a Thanksgiving meal but with your help we can
reach out to our brothers in sisters in need. Simply
pick a “leaf” off the tree in the vestibule and drop the
top of the card off at the parish office or drop it in the
collection basket. Keep the bottom of the card as a
reminder of what you signed up to donate. Then bring
in your donation during the time frame listed on your
“leaf”. (Yes, we do have a freezer for the turkeys. So
turkeys, hams, and non-perishable items can be
dropped off starting now.) There are leaves with just
about anything you can think of for Thanksgiving.
Monetary donations and Fry’s gift cards will help
purchase necessary food items we run short on and are
greatly appreciated. This is a great way to share your
blessings with families in need this Thanksgiving. If
you have any questions please contact Laura Stehle,
305-3611.

are in need of a Thanksgiving basket should contact

PARISH ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT FYE JUNE 2016
I am so grateful for your faithful support of Our Mother of Sorrows with your time, talent and treasure
this past fiscal year. You all are indeed making a significant difference in the lives of our parishioners
and community at large. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure make you co-laborers with the Parish and
School staff and faculty in the 70-80 ministries active in our parish. As we continue to hold up the ideal
of the ten percent tithe – 5% to the parish and 5% to other charities and outreach – we empower those
who are the face, voice, hands and feet of Jesus reaching out to those on our doorstep, in Mexico, and
Haiti. Your faithfulness was again seen with the successful Fiscal Year that ended June 30, 2016.
Through the last weekend of the fiscal year, June 26, 2016, we received an average weekly stewardship
of $20,421, thus, exceeding our weekly budget of $19,500 by almost 5%. Again, thank you so much!
As you will see in the graph, this year’s stewardship was consistent with the stewardship plateau we’ve
been experiencing now over four years. The trend line of all four years is increasing only 0.65%, while
the cost of living is rising much faster. As we look to the future, even in this new fiscal year’s budget,
we have had to take steps to mitigate costs, including a reorganization of the parish staff.
So, please don’t think your humble tithe doesn’t matter. In the hands of the Lord, He is able to “multiply
your seed and increase the harvest”. The Parish continues to encourage you to use the Electronic Funds
Transfer or EFT. It’s an easy, safe and secure way for you to meet your tithing commitment. You have
control. At the beginning of this fiscal year, 337 families took advantage of this program—a slight
decrease this year from last year, but the average monthly gift has increased to $72.65.
Total revenues for FY15/16 year were $3,350,812. Our total expenses, excluding depreciation (which is
a non-cash expense), were $3,234,863. This resulted in net margin of $115,950 or 3.6% before
depreciation. Including depreciation, we have a margin of $2,653.
Here is a quick summary of the year by ministry:
Human and Financial Resources – Revenues were above the budget primarily due to capital
projects: Church AC replacement and other projects; and greater stewardship and Haiti support
than anticipated. Expenses were also above the budget for Haiti support and higher benefits costs.
Haiti support is a “wash” in that it comes in as revenue and then goes out as an expense. It does
not stay here in the parish. Beginning in FY15/16, the clergy and parish staff salary and wage
expenses were reported with the ministry they supported to present a more accurate picture of the
revenues and expenses by ministry. This more properly aligns the costs to the consumers rather
than all grouped in the Human Resources and Finance category.
Our Liturgy and Worship, Religious Education, Youth Ministry, Adult Faith Formation, and
Pastoral Care program total expenses exceeded their collective revenues by $391,054. These are
the heart of many of the ministries and outreach we do here at OMOS and yet, without your
faithful tithing and support, we could not do them.
While the school benefitted from a higher enrollment than budgeted, it was later than anticipated,
so through careful personnel management, the school was able to hold its deficit to $20,019.
Thank you for joining us on the journey as we go forward for God. Thank you for coming alongside us
with your gifts of time, talent and treasure, and God bless.
~Steve Contreras, Parish Business Manager
