ICE PLANT
COMPLETED-
First Ice Manufactured on
St Andrews Bay
Drawn SundayPL-
ANT NOW PREPARED TO FILL ALL
SIZED ORDER-
SIt is with pleasure that the PILOTannounces the completion of PanamaCitys first important industry the 30
ton plant of the Panma Ice CompanyThe ammonia was forced through the
pipes for the first time the latter part-of last week and by Sunday therewas a supply of clear pure ice in thecans and a little was given out tothose who just had to have some
The plant is equipped with a 30
ton absorption ice machine made bythe Columbus Iron Works of Co ¬
lumbus Ga whose machines can befound all through the United Stateswhere ice is manufactured fromTexas to New York and in Cuba-
It is claimed for the absorptionmachine that a purer quality of ice ismade than by other systems thesteam from which the water is pro-cured not passing at any time throughoiled valves or other places whereimpurities could bo taken up by thewater
Another valuable feature of thesemachines is the low cost of buildingrequired only the most inexpensivecovering being necessary All thedifferent parts of the machine standupon their own foundation onlycarrying their weight and if thebuilding be burned over them themachine remains but little injured
The Panama lee Company was or-
ganized¬
but a few weeks sins e and isoflicered as follows O E WilliamsPresident II C Williams Vice Presi ¬
dent A L Williams Secretary andTreasurer and the following Boardof Directors O E Williams R C
Williams A L Williams and 1 A
HutchinsonAs soon as organized they closed a
contract with the Columbus Iron-
Works for the plant which wasshipped in by the Tarpon and thework on the putting in the founda ¬
tions at once beganThe building erected is a wooden
frame construction 31 feet by 150 feetwith the boiler set in brick some littledistance from the main building Thebrine vat is 21 feet by 67 feet andholds 602 two hundred pound cans
The machinery is first class inevery respect as good as can bemade by one of the best ice plantmanufactories in the world and isguaranteed to do the best of workThe boiler is of 150 h p
It took 18 drums of ammonia of 750
pounds each to charge the plantand 12 tons of salt went into thebrine yat-
Specimens of the ice turned out areas clear as crystal and as pure asscience can make ice Only dry steamis used and this passed throughcooling tubes which no impurity canenter and finally just before going

into the cans filtered through char-coal
I
The work of erecting>
this plant has I
been under the charge of P H LaffiIteau an expert ice machine engineer-a very thorough mechanic and a I
congenial gentleman He has beenwith the company many years and
the perfection of the work he hasdone on this plant shows that he can ¬
not be excelled in his line of workMr Laffiteau is married and has a
pleasant home in Columbus Ga
It is with satisfaction that the PILOT
chronicles such an important event-
to the entire bay country and thefishermen of this portion of the gulf-
as the opening of an ice plant of largecapacity at this point It means abetter price for the fish caugl t astable supply of ice for domestic pur ¬
poses and the bringing to St An ¬
drews bay of much business that hashitherto gone elsewhere for lack ofice for refrigeration
With the opening of the pass fruitboats will be run in here from Cen-
tral¬
American points as the railway-can now secure a plentiful and eco ¬
nomical supply of ice for their re ¬
frigerator cars In fact the makingof ice here marks the commencementof a new era in business for thisport

Post Office Robbed-
No little excitement was created itJftour quiet town on Tuesday morning A
by the report that the post office hadbeen robbed the night before jtseems that an entrance was effectedthrough a back door by boringthrough from the outside and unfasVtening a screen dour and then brealjbig open money drawer Postmaster
4i
Conely had been collecting for ijraWoodmen and also had quite a surJYof post office money in the draweramounting altogether to about 890
which was taken Nothing else wasdisturbed It is the impression thatthe work was done by sonic who wasfamiliar with the interior of theoflice
St Andrews Ice PlantThere has been something of a
rivalry as to which of the two iceplants being built upon tho bay wouldturn out the first ice The parties incharge of both have labored energet-ically
¬
to get their respective plants-in operation so as to fill the summerdemand for ice and both have suc ¬
ceeded in beginning its manufacturewithin a few days of each other thisplant having been able to turn out thefinished product last evening
Mrs Drummoml wife of one of theproprietors had the honor of turningon the ammonia at this plant the firstof this week and since then steadyprogress has been made in tuning upthe machinery and getting it downto work Al r MeSwcen has hadcharge of its erection and being anold ice machine man with much ex-
perience¬
has done his work in u moetcapable and efficient manner
The building is strongly framedcovered with corrugated galvanizediron and the foundations of the vatand the floor are of cement Thoboiler is placed to the south andsonic feet from the building-
The machine is of the ColumbusIron V orks absorption pattern of tentons capacity The description of thePanama Ice Companys machine sofar as its action and purity of pro ¬
duct is concerned applies to thismachine
The company have a first class dockextending out into 15 feet of waterand will be in readiness to supplytheir customers with ice in a veryshort time-
Railway Dock
But little progress has been madeupon this structure this past weekowing to the pile driver getting tooclose in shore on the high tide of lastweek since which time there has notbeen tide enough to float it This isunfortunate for Mr Daniel and theRailway company The abutment iscompleted and the dock work willbe rushed just as soon as a tide comesin sufficient to float the driver
