3

Introduction

• Learn why, when and how we migrated from a Colleague environment with a Oracle 10g database to a Colleague environment with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database.

• Learn insights into your own possible migration

4

Agenda

• Who We Are• Why We Had To Migrate• The New Hardware Platform• The Test Migration• Preparing For Migration Weekend• The Weekend• Q&A

5

Who We Are

6

Who We Are

• Kishwaukee College is a community college founded in 1968, located amongst the beautiful cornfields of Malta, IL.

• Located 6 miles west of DeKalb, IL and Northern Illinois University

• Around 3500 FTE• Implemented Colleague R18 in 2007/2008

with two Sun v490 servers running Solaris 10 and using Oracle 10g for the database

7

Why We Had To Migrate

8

Why We Had To Migrate

• Servers had reached End Of Life• Tired of beta testing software• Direction of the product at Datatel• Needed Colleague to better integrate with

Active Directory• Needed a platform we could virtualize• Cost Savings

9

The Journey Ahead

10

The New Hardware Platform

11

The New Hardware Platform

• Completely Virtual Environment• VMware vSphere 4.1 (Vcenter/ESXi 4.1)• 6 Host Servers

– 4 HP DL380G6 – Dual Quad Core Xeon x5550 64GB RAM

– 2 HP DL380G7 – Dual Six Core Xeon X5650 192 GB RAM

• 17 TB Usable Storage Currently• Changing out 2 of the G6 servers for 2 HP

DL380G8 servers (Dual Eight Core Xeon E5-2690 224GB RAM) during Summer 2013

12

The Test Migration

13

The Test Migration

• Data brought into new environment• Because we were an Oracle school, data was pretty

clean• Had to figure out how to identify our custom code

(not too much custom) and install• Had to setup a new (virtual) WebAdvisor server as

well as a new (virtual) DMI server• Setup authentication• Identify users to test and let them do their thing• AR.INVOICE.ITEMS

14

The Test Migration

Preparing For Migration Weekend

• Schedule the weekend – multiple areas of the college involved. 5/31/12 – 6/3/12

• Re-implement custom data dumps in SSIS (Admissions, Document Imaging)

• Organize users for Acceptance Testing and come up with testing plans

• OT and Comp Time authorized• Figure out food for the weekend• Cots…some place to sleep is very important!

17

The Weekend

18

The Weekend

19

The Weekend

• Started Thursday evening with DMIG• By Saturday, data was done• Challenges:

– Custom Code– Regen Computed Columns (BNGN)– Build the custom views/Business Objects
