The Free Media Foundation (FMF) was formed in 2002 as an implementing agency for South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and its related initiatives.

SAFMA is a mainstream media practitioners body of eight South Asian countries recognized by SAARC as its Associated Body, is active in the region since 2000 and has taken important initiatives for peace and media related issues.

Seven Regional Media Conferences have been conducted by SAFMA to date. Last South Asian Free Media Conference on “Democracy and Authoritarianism in South Asia” held in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on 10-11 February 2009. Next Conference is planned at Amritsar in 2011.

• Five SAARC Journalists’ Summit have been held to date.

• Last SJS was held on 26-27 April 2010. Themed ‘Environment and South Asia,’ the summit was inaugurated by Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley.

• Approximately 130 journalists and media personnel from South Asia gathered in Paro, Bhutan attended the fifth SAARC South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) summit.

• To safeguard women in media, SAWM was formed on October 10-11, 2009 at Lahore, Pakistan.

• The Conference was preceded by eight SAWM national conferences and formation of elected national executive bodies in all eight countries.

• It focused on the challenges faced by women working in media.

• South Asian Media Commission (SAMC)—a regional media watchdog in eight countries of the region to monitor attacks on the press and audit media, was formed in 2006.

• It produces annual and periodical media reports (South Asia Media Monitor), besides taking up the issues of media freedom and media content.

South Asian Journal (SAJ), a scholarly quarterly journal—has completed eight years of publication that reaches to over 2000 scholars, editors, policy makers, legislators, politicians and all those who matter in the region.

SAMS: South Asian Media School (SAMS), a unique facility and institution helping train and reorient young journalists and fresh graduates from the region.

Achievements:- 9 courses (Eight Week/One Week, International and local)- 198 Trainees - News packages produced - 40- Radio programmes produced – 12

To develop and produce soft and hard media products for mass awareness and public service for wide dissemination to promote peace and curb terrorism, a dedicated, effective and low cost Production House is set up at FMF.• Two current affair programmes are designed and recording will be initiated

after partnership with local channel will be materialized.• In partnership with NDTV two programmes were recorded and live

televised through Production House. The programmes have won National Awards in India.

SAFMA hosted The National Documentary Festival 2009 – a 3 -day festival (14th-16th December 2009) showcasing documentaries across Pakistan on conflict, peace, people, culture, women, education and environment. The following films were shortlisted by the Jury to be screened at the Second SAFMA South Asian Interactive Documentary Festival: Umeed-e- sehr- Beti sab ki sanjhi- Directed by Kashif Mardani and Aqdas Gul

The number of initiatives have been undertaken between Indo-Pak, Pak-Afghan, Bangladesh-India. Punjab-Punjab, Mumbai-Karachi, Dhaka-Kolkota exchanges of journalists, parliamentarians, experts and artists to build confidence and promote cooperation.

SAFMA’s exchange of journalists across the LoC helped built consensus for opening bus service and trade between the divided Kashmir in 2006.

SAFMA’s two South Asian Parliamentary Conferences brought on board all the parties represented in all the eight parliaments of the region on the same page to pursue an agenda of South Asian Union, including economic union, and the south Asian Parliament.

• SAFMA’s interventions through Indo-Pak Parliamentary conferences facilitated ceasefire and withdrawal of troops from Indo-Pak borders in 2003.

• It sub-regional cooperation efforts brought the businessmen, agriculturists, writers, educationists and experts closure through Punjab-Punjab and Mumbai-Karachi exchanges during the period 2004 - 2010.

SAFMA hosted a conference titled “Pak-Afghan Parliamentarians, Experts and Journalists Conference-I: Building Long-term Partnership”.

The members of two parliaments, representing all parties in respective parliaments, prominent experts and leading journalists from Pakistan and Afghanistan participated in the event.

The event provided an opportunity to promote peace and harmony among the countries and to agree upon the principles of good neighbourly relations, respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, promoting an equitable all-sided cooperation in all fields.

DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

• Democracy and Good Governance Programme brought media and civil society institutions to jointly struggle for major challenges faced by democracy in transition, civilian supremacy and rule of law while strengthening transparency, accountability, devolution and people.

• “Citizens for Democracy” campaign was designed and implemented to raise the concerns over institutional, financial and social destabilisation in the country, which was straining to cope with double challenge of terrorism and floods.

Central Secretariat:

Free Media Foundation (FMF) has developed and implemented its long-term institutional development plan in order to ensure the sustainability of the organization. Following were the major tasks achieved during last year:

Revision of the Articles of Association to develop legal framework of FMF with

SAFMA, SAWM and SAMC by a leading corporate lawyers’ firm. Developed and implemented new Standard Operating Procedures. Appointment of Internal Auditors Certification from Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy Reconstitution of Audit and Finance Committee, Procurement Committee,

Recruitment Committee etc.
