WALK OF LIFE Al Jones

After last year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, I received a call from a local gentleman who just wanted to say thanks for our help in promoting the walk and having our mascot “Alioops” there for the day. I could tell by the quiver in his voice that he wanted to say much more. It was one of those calls where, no matter how busy you may be, you just know that you have to make time for it. You know that the caller is feeling desperate to share their burden with someone, if even for just a few minutes. “Nothing quite prepares you for the shock of having a child diagnosed with a devastating disease, Al. There are literally millions of kids like my son who endure daily challenges and worries that no child should ever have to face,” he started. “Is he receiving treatment?” I asked. “Although the insulin keeps him alive and his diabetes under control most of the time, it is not a cure, and it doesn’t stop the disease from taking a horrible toll on his body. I've accepted the fact that he has diabetes, but I refuse to stand by and watch it slowly damage his heart, kidneys, nerves, eyesight, circulation, and shorten his life expectancy,” he explained. “At age twelve, he was one hundred ten pounds. Now, at fourteen, he weighs a mere seventy five. Somehow, somewhere, some way, there has to be a cure,” he continued with a hint of desperation in his voice. What started out as a short courtesy call, turned into an hour as I listened to him expand on his son’s illness. I couldn’t help but notice that he talked in depth of his son’s trials and fight with the disease, but never once talked about his own obvious anguish. feeling of helplessness, bouts of depression and anger he must feel on a daily basis. A father’s instinct is to want better for his children; to protect them and help them to grow up strong. And when things go wrong, a father wants to be able to fix things. I couldn’t imagine the frustrations of having to watch helplessly as a disease took its toll on one of my children. Many strides have been made with regards to curing diabetes. Indeed, many children grow up to live fulfilling lives because of the treatments available due to breakthroughs in research. But these are only treatments….not a cure. A bad choice of judgment or a missed insulin injection can turn their lives upside down, or even worse….cost them their lives. This Sunday, September 7th, is the Annual Walk to Cure Diabetes. This is a 5 km family walk, combined with food and entertainment. Wheelchairs, strollers and bikes are welcome. The walk will take place in Airdrie. Registrations begin at 9 am with the walk starting at 11 am. There will be face painting and clowns for the kids. Alioops from Here’s the Scoop will be there as well. All money raised from donations at this event will go towards Diabetes Research. All donations, big or small are greatly appreciated. For more info, visit www.jdrf.ca or call 403-255-7100. While preparing for this column, I tried contacting this gentleman to do a bit of a follow-up. I’m informed that they have moved to be closer to extended family, but that they still read up on Airdrie via the internet. So, with hopes that they may read this on our website, I want to send them our sincerest condolences. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I do not fear my own demise near as much as I fear that of my children. If you need to talk again … I’m available ... just call.

Let them at all times concern themselves with doing a kindly thing for one of their fellows, offering to someone

love, consideration, thoughtful help. ‘Abdul’l-Baha

Virtue of the Week

Consideration

Consideration is being thoughtful of other people and their feelings. You consider how your actions affect them. You

pay careful attention to what others like and don’t like, and do things that give them happiness.

You are practicing consideration when you: • Respect other people’s needs and feelings. • Consider others’ needs as important as your own. • Stop and think how your actions will affect people. • Put yourself in other peoples shoes. • Give tender attention. • Think of little things to bring others happiness.

Affirmation I am considerate of others. I stop and think

about how my actions affect them. I do thoughtful things for people.

Counterfeit Money A counterfeiter decided that the easiest way to pass off his phony $18 bills would be to unload them in some small rural town, so he drove until he found a tiny town with a single general merchandise store. He entered the store, went up to the counter, and handed one of the bogus bills to the man behind the counter. "Could you change this for me, please?" The store clerk looked at the bill for a few seconds then smiled at the man. "Of course I can. Would you prefer two $9 bills or three $6 bills?"

Quoting Scripture A woman went into her kitchen to find a burglar loaded down with a bunch of stuff he was stealing from her kitchen. Not having any kind of weapon to scare him off, she raised her hand and said "Acts 2:38," and proceeded to quote scripture. The burglar froze in place and didn't move. The woman called 911, the police arrived and were amazed to find the burglar still frozen where he stood. "What did you say to him that kept him from moving?" they asked the woman. She told them that she had simply said Acts 2:38 and quoted scripture. The police chuckled and escorted the burglar out to the patrol car. "Why did the woman's quoting scripture scare you so much?" they asked. "Scripture?" said the burglar, "I thought she said she had an axe and two 38's!"

"Twenty-two dollars and thirty-six cents." "If I gave you three ten dollar bills, how much change would I get?" said the boy. "Seven dollars and sixty-four cents," stated the c l e r k w h o appeared to be irritated by all the questions. Larry said, as he d i s a p p e a r e d through the door, "I don't want to b u y t h e items...that's our arithmetic lesson for tomorrow, and I needed some help with it."

Penny’s Tip of the Week

Sometimes when I workout or jog, I get a

nasty stitch in my side. Is there a way to get rid of it or prevent it from happening?

Submitted by: Brad Side stitches often occur when gas bubbles get shaken up while exercising and become trapped in the intestines. Stop what you’re doing for a few minutes and try this: draw in a deep breath through the nose then pull in your abdominal muscles as you exhale pushing your air out. Repeat this breathing

pattern say 8 to 10 times, which should eliminate any trapped gas bubbles.

new ideas. I'm frightened of

old ones.” - John Cage
