•In the field, students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world settings, such as child and family service agencies, government offices, hospitals, public schools, and community mental health centers

•There are approximately 475 agencies (southeastern Michigan, nationally, and internationally) and placements are available in urban and rural areas

•There are several Schools of Social Work in the SE Michigan area so placements are very competitive. Meeting deadlines in the application process is critical

INTERNATIONAL FIELD PLACEMENT INFORMATION

• Students MUST follow the 16-month schedule AND START their domestic/local field placement in the Fall (Sept.) term

• The Field Placement Request Materials are due May 14, 2010

• International field placements take place during the Spring/Summer term (May-August, 4-5 days per week) and have an application process

• International Proposals are due October 18, 2010

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

• OUT OF SEQUENCE STUDENTS– Students considering a field start that does not fit the standard

curriculum track are required to submit an Out of Sequence (OOS) Petition

– Most OOS students will start field placement in the Fall term– The Field Placement Request Materials are due May 14,2010– Indicate your situation in the “Remarks” section on the

application

• SAFE HOUSE: (CO, IP, MHS) http://www.ssw.umich.edu/programs/msw/ofi/SafeHouseCenter.pdf – Has a mandatory training that is only held in the Fall term. If

considering placement here for Fall or Winter terms, you must take the training in the Fall term

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Almost all fieldwork sites that serve children, youth and the elderly will require that student’s (at their own expense) complete the following in order to be considered for placement: Criminal Background Check Sexual Offender Registry Child Abuse Registry Drug /substance/testing Proof of immunizations Submit additional reference letters (cannot use those letters that

were submitted with application to the program) Fingerprint application information can be found here:

• Students need to inquire about these during their initial contact with the fieldwork site

• Not having access to transportation will limit placement options. Transportation Hardship Assistance may be available if you qualify

PLACEMENT REQUEST APPLICATION• Field Placement Request Application consists of:

– An online application where you will indicate your top 6 placement choices for consideration

– Uploading (not e-mailing) your Goal Statement (in PDF format) when submitting your application

– Uploading (not e-mailing) up to a 2 page Résumé (in PDF format) when submitting your application

• You submit these documents online and they are shared electronically with prospective fieldwork sites

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?• Once you submit your online application, you will receive an automated

e-mail assigning you to a Field Faculty person with their contact information. OFI will begin working with you May 14, 2010

• Contact your assigned Field Faculty person with ANY questions. Appointments can be made with your Field Faculty via telephone or in-person

• Work on your application materials, your Goal Statement, update your Résumé, and any additional paperwork required right away

• 16-month students: start working on these documents and researching

placement options. OFI will work with you after School starts allowing us time to get the Fall cohort placed

• REMEMBER: Stay in contact with your Field Faculty on a continuous basis until you are placed 19
