A&A Records & Tapes saved by Jumbo financingAn angel in the form of Jumbo Video, which ispart of Lincoln Capitol Corp, a Toronto -basedinvestment firm, has come to the rescue ofA&A Records & Tapes. According to an articleby Barbara Aarsteinsen in the Toronto Star'sBusiness Today (March 27, 1991), the assets ofbankrupt Sound Insight Ltd., which controlsA&A as well as its subsidiary, Sound 21 Can-ada, have been acquired by Lincoln.

The dealer in the transaction, which willapparently close on April 1, is Cliff Horowitz, who is Chairman and CEO of Lincoln.

According to Aarsteinsen, Lincoln willhave a 70 percent interest in the new company, which is being tentatively tagged as A&AMusic and Entertainment Ltd. Interestingenough, the remaining control rests with Cen-tral Guaranty Trust Co and the Ontario Munici-pal Employees Retirement Savings Fund, who,as secured creditors, are taking the equity inlieu of the several millions of dollars it is owed.

The Star article reveals that Horowitzplans to stock recorded music in his some of his56 video stores and, conversely, video cas-settes in the A&A chain. There will also be afurther paring down of the A&A operation, from 250 stores to 150 employing somewherein the neighborhood of 1500 to 1600 employ-ees. A&A previously had 1700 employees onthe payroll. Also, according to the Star article,Garth Mitchell, President of Sound Insight andother members of A&A management will stayon, but only on a three-month trial basis.

Mel Shaw, recipient of this year's Walt GreallsAward (I) Is congratulated by Bruce Allen, whohas also been honoured with the award and whomade the presentation to Shaw In Vancouver.

Seen at recent Juno Awards which were held inVancouver (I to r) John Pozer, Stan Kulln, MelShaw, Marie Kulin and Brian Robertson

It has been estimated that when A&Awent into bankruptcy, more than $20 millionwas on the hook, a good percentage of thisowed to record companies. It's not clear if,under the new regime, whether record compa-nies would be quick to extend credit. Horowitzwas unavailable for comment at press time.

du Maurier jazz festivalset for downtown TorontoFor the fifth consecutive year, du Maurier willpresent Downtown Jazz, a unique, ten-day jazzfestival that will be staged in Toronto (June 21through 30). Festival publicist BarbMcCullough reveals that this year's festival hasbeen expanded in terms of locations, perform-ers and related activities.

Says McCullough, "the ten jam-packeddays of the world's best jazz will be highlightedin concert halls, indoor and outdoor stages, clubs, lounges, restaurants, hotels, shoppingmalls, and in the streets of Toronto."

The final list of performers and locationswill be revealed at a later date. It is expectedthat more than 40 different locations will takepart in the festival this year. There will also bea jazz film festival and jazz workshops. One ofthe biggest attractions is the Black Label Frontand Centre outdoor stage setting at Berczy Park(Front and Church streets) where free, dailyconcerts are performed every day from noon to2 pm and 5 to 7 pm.

Named as Artistic Director for theToronto dates is world renowned saxophonistand international jazz festival consultant JimGalloway. Pat Taylor, well-known as a theatri-cal producer takes Executive Producer credits, and Bobby Herriot, past Toronto Musicians'Association president is the Arts Consultant.

McCullough is quick to point out that duMaurier's commitment to presenting jazz "isnot limited to Toronto." Jazz festivals are alsomounted by du Maurier in Vancouver, Saska-toon, Edmonton and Ottawa, "making duMaurier Ltd one of the most significant con-tributors to the presentation of jazz in thiscountry," concludes McCullough.

Harry Connick Jr. firmedfor Toronto's Massey HallHarry Connick Jr. and his orchestra are sched-uled for an April 14th date at Toronto's MasseyHall. Connick has turned the jazz scene on itsear, attracting a much younger audience, muchof it due his own young age of 23.

Although signed to Columbia Records in1987, it wasn't until three albums later with therelease of the soundtrack When Harry MetSally, that Connick gained an almost overnightpopularity, although only as an instrumentalist. It was the release of his We Are In Love albumthat brought out his vocal charm.

For those who haven't been able to catchhim in concert, his good looks were splashed allover the silver screen when he made his actingdebut in Memphis Belle, a film not too badlyreceived by the critics.

Rita MacNeil sells outToronto/Vancouver datesIt appears Rita MacNeil is the hottest ticket inthe country, judging by her five sold out per-formances at the O'Keefe Centre. She dupli-cated this feat by selling out an additional fiveshows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Van-couver.

With such overwhelming demand, plansare in the works to bring her back to Toronto ina couple of months according to Cheryn Pol-lard, Production Co-ordinator at Virgin Rec-ords, although no definite dates have been set.

"We're getting ready to release two newsingles to radio "' says Pollard, "the first, titledThe Hurtin' Kind, is going to country stationsand the other track, Does It Ever Change, willgo to AC stations." Both songs are edited ver-sions taken from the LP Home I'll Be which isquickly approaching double platinum salesfigures in Canada.

The album is equally as popular unEurope, the U.K. and Australia but, in spite ofvaliant and persistent efforts, Virgin is unableto generate any interest in the U.S. Apparently, none of the companies approached in the U.S.can hear the potential in this album.

Nylon's Marc Connors dead of cancer at 43One of the leading lights of Canada's perform-ance/songwriting field, Marc Connors, a mem-ber of the Nylons, has been tragically snuffedout by cancer. Mr. Connors died, March 25th,of viral pneumonia at the Falk OncologyCentre, a Toronto cancer clinic. He was 43years of age.

Mr. Connors last performed with theNylons in West burg, Idaho on Feb. 8th of thisyear. "This was going to be his last perform-ance," explains Wayne Thompson, manager ofthe Nylons. "He was to assume the duties ofArtistic Director and work closely with thegroup on songwriting material. With his bless-ing, we began auditioning for his replacement. We knew Marc was ill, but didn't expect thisat all," concludes Mr. Thompson, who wasobviously shaken by Mr. Connors' death.

Mr. Connors had played an important rolein the recording of the Nylons' upcoming al-

bum, titled Four On The Floor. The album wasrecorded live at the Markham Theatre in mid -December. Mr. Connors was still active withthe group at that time. A subject that was verydear to him was the native people and theenvironmental issues of Brazil, which he lov-ingly put to song, and which is included on thealbum. He was anxiously looking forward tothe release of the album.

Formed in 1979, The Nylons, who releaseon the Attic label, quickly became one of theworld's top a cappela groups. In just a few shortyears they achieved a vocal harmony puritythat has yet to be matched. In 1986 they won theBest Singer Award at the Tokyo Song Festival.

Mr. Connors is survived by his mother, father, two sisters, Denise and Marcia, who liveon the family farm just outside of Kingston.Funeral services were held in Toronto onMarch 28.

Linda Dawe successfully meets challenge at Star labelLinda Dawe started heading up the nationaldivision of prominent Quebec label, Star Rec-ords, in August of 1990. The label is owned by

Linda Dawe

Montrealer Andre DiCesare and distributed bySelect Distribution, another Quebec company.Star has a roster of eight artists, three which

have pierced through the Quebec -Canada bor-der: Roch Voisine, Nasty Joe and Patrick Nor-man.

For the ten years of its existence, StarRecords had concentrated on the Quebec mar-ket, and Dawe was recruited as a long overdueliaison for the company in the rest of Canada:"Andre knew that he had to open a nationaloffice." she explains. "It was time to get ouracts into the rest of Canada."

And as Director of the National Divisionin charge of marketing strategies, Dawe has herhands full. A veritable superstar in Quebec andEurope, Roch Voisine's skyrocket to successaccounts fora lot of her workload. In just sevenmonths, Double, Voisine's French counterpartto his self -titled English release, has sold inexcess of two million units worldwide.

Most recently Dawe and the Star teamhave been tying up the ends of a promotion forRoch's Birthday Bash, at the Bercy in Paris.Voisine kicked off his European tour on March26, also his birthday. To celebrate the eventStar, in conjunction with Video Hits, Roblan's,Network Magazine, and Roots, launched acontest inviting people to send in a ballot to wina trip to Roch's Birthday Bash.

Out of 110,000 available ballots the drawwas made from the 15,000 received, some fromas far away as Texas and Newfoundland. Thewinner was sixteen -year -old Tanya Williams

Michael Jackson signing good news for retailersDon Oates, Senior Vice President, Sales &Marketing for Sony Music Canada, sees therecent signing by Sony Corp. of MichaelJackson to a contract boasting a "billion dollarpotential", as a much needed shot in the arm forthe industry as a whole.

The multi -media partnership (Sony Soft-ware's Sony Music Entertainment and Colum-bia Pictures Entertainment) with Jackson in-cludes six new Jackson albums, his own Nationlabel, motion pictures, television and shortfilms.

There was some confusion in reporting bythe dailies and the trade press of the signing, some suggesting that Sony had paid Jackson abillion dollars for six albums. "There is thepotential for a certain amount of earnings basedon the various avenues of entertainment he(Jackson) gets involved in," says Oates. Hegoes on to point out that this wasn't the com-mon signing of an artist to a recording contract."It was Sony Corp. that signed Michael, notSony Music Entertainment," which presents awhole different ball of wax. Not only willJackson be supplying his own album product toSony, but, through his Nation label, he will bebringing in new and established artists, makingmusic videos and, on the Columbia Picturesside, "he has the opportunity to be involved infull length feature films."

From the dismal state of retail, news ofthis magnitude should be very welcome. Oatesenthuses, "From our standpoint in Canada, thewelcome news is that we are now going to beable to market and sell a Michael Jacksonalbum within our next fiscal year. So, naturally, there is a great deal of excitement here . . . andI think the excitement should be shared by

everybody within the industry. We know thealbum sales potential there is for MichaelJackson and if he can get people walking backinto record stores, any news of a highly salespotential album should be accepted with openarms by everybody."

Oates continues with, "I would tell you, from our standpoint here at Sony Music, if anyof our competitors were in a position right nowof bringing out their number one shooters withbrand new albums in the next thirty or sixtydays, we would be patting them on the back and

saying "thank you, thank you very much',because we'd go for the second and third sale atthat point in time."

No release date for Jackson product hasbeen set at time of writing, nor information as tosignings to the Nation label, but a Jacksonalbum is expected by early summer.

Jackson has sold more than 80 millionalbums worldwide. In Canada, Off The Wallhas sold over quadruple platinum (400,000),Thriller has sold more than double diamondand is now at 2.3 million, and Bad is now inexcess of seven -times platinum (700,000),which totals more than 3.5 million sales forthree albums.

"There is no doubt that Michael Jacksonhas the ability to help resurrect a market that'sin a bit of a slump at the present time," saysOates," who concludes with, "We can look atthe orders that are coming in from our custom-ers for the Rolling Stones' album (Flashpoint)and see how much the retailers are counting onthis to help turn the tide . . . and if it wassomeone like Michael Jackson, it would be justthat much stronger."

RPM - April 6, 1991 - 3

from Winnipeg. "We were very happy for her,"says Dawe. "And we feel that she is an excellentexample of a Roch Voisine fan." Williams anda friend were flown to Paris to spend sevennights at the Hotel Concorde Lafayette andWilliams was presented with $1,000 spendingmoney.

Despite Roch's enormous internationalacclaim, he is still just gaining recognition inEnglish Canada. But Dawe is optimistic aboutthe increasing amount of exposure he is receiv-ing: "The radio broadcasters have really beenbehind us with Roch Voisine, I can't sayenough about how positive Canadian radio hasbeen towards this project."

Dawe is concerned, however, with whatshe feels is lack of support from Canadiantelevision broadcasters. "I don't thinkMuchMusic gives enough attention to Cana-dian product. I feel that TV broadcasters arereally lazy about it. Why don't we have na-tional variety shows for our Canadian talent?I'm knocked out by what radio is doing for us,but I'm frightened at what little attention theTV broadcasters are paying to our Canadiantalent."

This sentiment was compounded for StarRecords when Voisine was turned down for anappearance on the Junos, something Dawe andcolleague Gino Empry had been working on formonths. "We asked to get Roch on the Junos, but we were turned down by the Juno peoplebecause they told us that he wasn't 'screamingup the American charts'. I have no idea whatthat has to do with a Canadian awards show."

Dawe relishes the chance to concentrateher efforts on just a couple of artists at a timsaying it "makes a lot of difference in thquality of her work."

The other artists that are a priority rightnow for Dawe and Star are Nasty Joe, who hasjust released a new single titled I Don't WannaHurt You, and Patrick Norman, who is cur-rently mixing his new album which was re-corded in New Orleans with help from theNeville Brothers and Dr. Hook.

Overall, Star's place in the music industrylooks very positive. "We think this is going tobe a really great year," states Dawe who com-ments that sales have picked up substantiallywith the new focus on the rest of Canada."We've got great artists and great music and wecan't lose with radio behind us like it is."

Dawe seems vitalized by the whirlwindpace at Star, and she is excited to be a memberof its team. "It's very gratifying to have anopportunity to do some of the best work I'veever done. We are all professionals at Star andwe're dedicated. We always get the job doneand we're having a lot of fun doing it. That'sreally important!" - AM

They all sound the same ... An independ-ent record label recently hired a young girl, who had no real knowledge of the industry, tocall stations and do general tracking for his re-leases. The first day on the job and after 32 callsto programmers, she said, "They all sound thesame . . . really dismal." The next day she hadto call several American radio stations."Wow!" she said. "These people sounded re-ally excited to hear from me and very positive."Hold on, I've got a kicker. I was talking to aproducer/label owner in Nashville, and he said"You know, when I call radio stations in Can-ada, I really feel important. Like, I don't havetoo much time or money to spend on the phone, but these guys want to talk about the weather, politics and even the record." I guess it alldepends on whose bull is being gored! (EC:How clever . . . I)

Getting to know Canada ... ! The majorityof recording artists rely too much on the influ-ence of Toronto radio, and forget there's awhole different thinking once you leaveToronto. Most of these artists very rarely getout across the country, which can be an eyeopener. Paris Black has just completed a monthlong performance/promotion trip across Can-ada, visiting radio stations in the major centreslike Vancouver, Calgary, Win-nipeg, Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton, SaintJohn, St. John's, Montreal and a few smallermarkets in Ontario. The welcome mat was outeverywhere he went. Radio programmers were, immediately patched into his ISBA album andConspiracy, his latest release track. "It wasreally great," says Paris, " to be sitting in a hotelroom in Vancouver or Montreal or Edmontonand hearing my record on the radio. After hisvisit to Halifax where he again received a greatwelcome from radio, more than 1,000 albumswere sold. Paris is now charting on both CHRand A/C radio from coast coast. (EC: It'scalled promotion and a little effective advertis-ing also helps!)

David Geffen in GO . . . ! This month's GQ(EC: Gentlemen's Quarterly for you unmadebeds . . .!) has an excellent article on DavidGeffen, the richest man in Hollywood. He has away of handling some of the witch hunters wholike to take public pot-shots at him. (EC: Witchhunters . . . I thought they were unique toCanada!)

Radiowaves ! If you thought Country 59was a shock, wait till you read about what'scoming down the pipe over the next fewmonths. There will be some stations closing, some big names exiting and a couple of broad-casters will get more than a wrist slap from theCRTC. (EC: You mean we are going to have anon -hands CRTC . . . ?)

Radio headhunters are prowling . . . !

Some of the broadcast moguls are getting alittle concerned over the exiting of or threats toleave by some of their high-priced on -air per-sonalities. Headhunters are apparently scour-ing the hinterlands, trying to dig up new andvery strong personalities, The only people whowant to move into the big time however, are theweaker varieties. One headhunter is tapping theUS market as well. (EC: That's the only markethe thinks he knows . . . !)

Is this a great country ... or what? Just aswe thought there would be a giant hole onYonge Street, you know, next door to our fa-vourite storekeeper, along comes an angel . . .

and with oodles of money. Not enough, mindyou, to get instant credit, but that'll come.Whose going to look back when there's mil-lions of dollars to be made .. . and lost, again!(EC: Short memories are par for the course. Bythe way, when's the industry golf tournamentso we can meet all these new shakers . . . ?)

Shalom! Johnny Lombardi ... ! Ourfavour-ite broadcast fighter for multiculturalism,Johnny Lombardi, who heads up CHIN Radio,is to be honoured by the Beth Sholom Brother-hood. Johnny will be presented with the Hu-

manitarian Award at the 40th Annual AwardDinner, May 14. The dinner will be held at theBeth Sholom Synagogue in Toronto. This isquite an honour for Johnny, who joins a distin-guished list of previous recipients includingMaureen Forrester, Mila Mulroney, ex Gover-nor-General Jeanne Sauve, Douglas Bassettand more. Congratulations Johnny. (EC: Idon't see our favourite storekeeper's namementioned . . . !)

A profound statement ... "If all the privatebroadcasters in the country were to get behinda single issue or a worthwhile cause, the resultswould be truly outstanding," a short statementthat prefaced a press release from the CAB.Now, I've been saying that for years. Do yourealize how powerful the private broadcastersare in this country? Just think, if the privatebroadcasters were to get behind the Canadianrecording industry, can you imagine the re-sults? Awesome . . . just awesome! Anyway, relax, the private broadcasters aren't about tokick into gear with the recording industry. They're interested in Racial Harmony, a cam-paign themed as "Racism, If you won't stop it,who will?". (EC: How about a national cam-paign for a black urban dance station in each ofthe major markets for starters . . . ?)

A breakthrough for Stompin' Tom . . . ?I've mentioned in this very column . . . notonce .. . not twice .. . but several times, that ifcountry, or even A/C, programmers would giveone of Stompin' Tom's tracks a spin . . . theswitchboard would light up. Well, it happenedat CHAM in Hamilton, where Stompin' Tom'sMargo's Cargo was put up against the latestsingle from Paul Overstreet. You guessed it,our favourite spudder, won, hands down. WillStompin' Tom finally get a chart position on amajor Canadian country radio chart? Don'thold your breath. (EC: I am . . . and Pmcounting!)

COVER STORY - by Roy Windhager

Glass Tiger project has sheer animal magnetismMotley Crue, Poison, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trickand Stryper; all are bands one wouldn't nor-mally list with Glass Tiger. The common ele-ment that links them, however, is producer TomWerman.

When their new release, Simple Mission, was being conceived, Glass Tiger took stock oftheir situation and decided that a shift in musi-cal emphasis was needed. They wanted to bringback the edge they had when they were slug-ging it out in the bars. Mass commercial accep-tance and the radio -friendly sound of GlassTiger's previous singles led them to be pigeon-holed very early on as a lightweight pop group. The first step to eradicating this image was tofind the right producer. Since Jim Valiance wasunavailable, they took on the long and arduoustask of searching for the perfect man to under-mine the project. After meeting with severalpeople, Tom Werman was chosen as he was theonly one who had a rock and roll backgroundwith whom nobody had any hang-ups.

"It's exciting for us because this is thefirst album we've made that's even close towhat we are live", says keyboardist Sam Reid,"eleven of the thirteen tracks have live drumsand a couple of the vocal performances areright from the demos."

The band spent most of 1990 in LosAngeles studios, Sunset Sound, The SoundFactory and A &M Studios in order to work withWerman. The results are a leaner, more aggres-sive sound without compromising the melodicintegrity on which Glass Tiger has built itsreputation.

The album also features a couple of guestappearances, the most notable being RodStewart's duet with Alan Frew on the Gaelicflavoured cut My Town.

"It's interesting the way that came about,"explains Wayne Parker, bassist for Glass Tiger,"a friend of a friend of Rod's was singing back-up on the album and told Rod about it. Mean-while, Alan had been hanging out with Rodplaying soccer when one day Rod came up tohim and said 'Hey, I hear you're doing a song

MCA takes over GRPfor Canada distributionEffective March 1, 1991, distribution of GRPproduct shifted to MCA Records Canada fromPolyGram. It was pointed out that all outstand-ing back orders will be cancelled and any out-standing authorized returns must be received atthe PolyGram warehouse no later than April 30,1991 for credit to be issued.

A joint statement issued by MCA's VicePresident Sales, Randy Lennox and KenGraydon, PolyGram's Vice President Sales &Marketing, stressed that as of March 1/91,MCA "will be responsible for all GRP product, including the issuance of return authorizationsfor all current GRP music selections sold inCanada by PolyGram Records Canada or MCARecords Canada."

It was also stressed that all return authori-zation requests for GRP product should besubmitted "separately" from regular returns.

about Scotland, how come you didn't ask me tosing on it' and Alan thought 'wow'." Thoughhe was flattered, it hadn't entered Frew's mindto ask however, the song is reminiscent of anynumber of Stewart classics and apparently herather fancied it.

"I think if we had passed on My Town, he(Stewart) probably would have liked to do ithimself simply because he was in a writingstage at the time had expressed interest init," says Parker.

The band has also struck a managementagreement with Stiefel-Phillips in the U.S., thesame team that manages Stewart. They have re-tained their management contract in Canadawith Joe Barn ford and Gary Pring of Manage-ment West. This should prove beneficial ingiving Glass Tiger an extra push in the Ameri-can market although they are no strangers tosuccess in the States. The single Don't ForgetMe from their debut album The Thin Red Linewent Top 5 on trade charts, while thealbum attained gold status there and earnedthem a 1987 Grammy nomination. In addition,it sold well over a million copies worldwide andwent platinum four times over in Canada.

Other guests on the Simple Mission albuminclude drummer Tony Thompson who per-formed on eleven tracks. His solid attack andincomparable precision comes through loudand clear which really gives a live feel to thisalbum. Thompson's previous credits includework for Chic and Power Station. Seasonedsession player, John Keane provides the beaton the remaining two tracks.

The real test is now just around the corner.

RPM - April 6, 1991 - 7

Industry and public acceptance will soon beknown as Simple Mission is set to ship onMarch 27 and a U.S. release is set for earlyMay.

"We've had the album since October andas avid listeners to all that's current, we like itand everybody has their favourite tracks, butwe've had to wait all these months for it to comeout and see what everybody else thinks," saysParker, "that's why this is a particularly excit-ing and anxious time for us."

All said and done, Simple Mission packs apowerful audio wallop with lots of crossoverpotential for radio. It's impossible to overem-phasize how strongly Glass Tiger feels that thisalbum is an important step forward in their fulldevelopment as a band. If the group wanted toregain their edge, they've succeeded in spades. And as much as their Simple Mission repre-sents the end of one era in their development, itis also an exciting chapter that Glass Tiger'sstory is only just beginning.

-Pop/Rock

Definitely Glass Tiger's most impres-sive release. A much more maturesound the third time around from thisnotable Newmarket band, a little bit ofa rougher rock edge that should gener-ate a lot of interest at both radio andretail. The first single, Animal Heart, isalready #24 on the RPM 100 Hit Tracksafter only 3 weeks. Lead vocalist AlanFrew shares co -writing credits on all 13of the tracks. This set was produced byTom Werman with the exception of OneTo One which was produced by Wer-man and Jim Valiance. Valiance is alsocredited for co -writing 6 tracks on thiseffort. My Town which guests Rod Ste-wart is single material as well as SimpleMission and One To One, Rhythm OfYour Love, Let's Talk and One NightAlone. (CD reviewed) SL

KING OF THE HILLKing Of The HillSBK Records K2 95827-F

SBK's new hard rock act, King Of TheHill have a magnetic appeal not unlikethe label's many dance acts. No, drummachines here, but the band certainlydoes have a certain funky danceabilityto it, trodding a new path in the heavymetal trend. The opening Party In MyPocket sets an energetic precedent forthe album, it's start and stop construc-tion contributing to this in a big way.Guitar parts are always highlighted, butnot simply to shock, these guys arewriting really good melodic tunes, andyou never forget that. I DO U, Rosesand Take It Or Leave It are exceptionaltracks on an album of winners. Sure todo very well at radio and retail.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - CountryMy Heroes Have AlwaysBeen CowboysSoundtrack - RCA - 2338 -2 -R -N

Country music has never enjoyed suchsuccess in Canada and when you canget a whole stable of top name country

acts on one album, it should be pushedto the max. The stars of the movie areokay (Mickey Rooney, Gary Busey,Kate Capshaw and Scott Glenn), butthe real sellers of the movie will be thestars on the soundtrack. Starting withthe Oak Ridge Boys and their recentcharter, (You're My) Soul And Inspira-tion, throw in Clint Black's Nothing'sNews, Alabama's Old Flame, RestlessHeart's When Somebody Love's Youand the icing on the cake, Willie Nelsonwith the title track from the originalscore. The movie has to prove itselfwith moviegoers, the soundtrack starshave already proven their retail value.(CD reviewed) - WG

Witness what a little bit of pop/rock cando for a contemporary Christian per-former. Amy Grant simply soars intochart prominence with this electrifyingpackage of entertainment. Baby, Babyis already scoring points with the chartmakers, but there's more. Good ForMe, in particular. Grant also teases herChristian brethern with a couple of Godfearing tracks, Child and Hope SetHigh. This one will definitely bring Grantout of the Christian closet.(CD reviewed) -WG

The Joy Division and Echo And TheBunnymen influences are clearly au-dible with this new English band, al-though the sound is a tad softer andperhaps more accessible because of it.The sweeping fuzz created with thesynthesizers and mellow vocals alsocontribute to a new quality to the alter-native genre. Quick As A Rainbow, thesometimes angry Hypnogogic andsmooth He Holds Her, He Needs Herare tunes that are sure to make onto air-waves. In contrast to an often heavi-ness, Kitchens gets slightly cheekywith songs like Gorgeous Love.Strange Free World is sure to appeal tohardcore fans of the band's influences.(CD reviewed) - AM

Betty Moon Is a new Canadian on thescene, providing an unusual sound forthe domestic rosters. Delving into an al-most gothic sound, Moon's intenselydelivered vocals and cutting narrativelyrics make her songs audio odysseyswhich often feature strong elements ofdance, alternative and straight -aheadrock. At first the album takes one bysurprise, but it's clever crafting hasrendered it a potentially strong cross-over album. Tracks that stand out areOne Kiss, the slow Second To None,Groovy Thing and the especially strongPower Of Man. (CD reviewed) - AM

PAUL WEBER -CountryOlder & WiserCardinal - CR-CD9002

Currently touring Western Canada,Weber will have the opportunity to

promote his first CD, a very impressiverelease. Weber has been in the countrysongwriting and performing arena longenough to know how to write goodstrong lyrics and also to pick other writ-ers with the same credentials. Weberhas done that with this package thatwas produced in Nashville by TonyMigliore and Cyril Rawson. His vocalsand projection are bang on and alongwith No One Can Hurt Me Any BetterThan You, there are a couple of othertracks that have single potential: Grow-ing Pains, written by Rawson and TerryBrown and Weber's solo writing of AllMessed Up (No Place To Go). Alsocontains his single track from last year,She'll Never Know. (CD reviewed) -WG

This is the lady who made jazz and soulfashionable and brought it into themainstream. What an incredible tributethis package is to another great lady ofjazz and soul, Sarah Vaughn. Take anytrack, Poor Butterfly, Send In TheClowns, Misty, It's Magic, I'll Be SeeingYou and I've Got The World On AString, this is pure, straight -ahead en-tertainment, and with 1991 being theyear of Adult music, treat your listeners

to what the music business is all about.Powerfully delivered lyrics that aremore than words to notes. These aremessages that connect, whether it befor the end or the beginning of the day.Retailers should front -rack this one.The McRae name is magic at retail.(CD reviewed) -WG

Fifty albums, twenty-one No. 1 singles, three Grammies, seven CMA Awardsand three People's Choice Awardslater, what can you say about a real liveliving country music legend. She's hadher ups and downs over the past coupleof years, but she always comes up withthe right combination to pull herselfback into chart prominence. The rightcombination this time Is one of the picksfrom the litter of country youngsters,Ricky Van Shelton. Their duet ofRockin' Years, written by Floyd Parton, has charts on both sides of the bordertilting. This is one of the strongest en-tries from America's reigning countryqueens in some time, a pretty good hatdoffer to producers Steve Buckingham,Steve Smith and, of course, Dolly her-self. As well, Dolly wrote or co -wrotenine of the eleven tracks on this set.(CD reviewed) -WG

Former drummer and singer for Cock -Robin, Michael Piccolo has been hon-ing his production skills for the past fewyears. He previously released singlesof A Whiter Shade Of Pale and ChangeOf Life, both included here, whichgained him some notoriety acrossCanada. Something that Piccolo isn'tweak on is vocals. He comes crashingthrough loud and clear and uses a vari-ety of writers that make for interestingsong material. With his self -promotion,Piccolo is concentrating on the titletrack, a Hillock/Blessing penning, which is now beginning to see playlistaction. Also key are LeAnne and theRhett Davis writing of Your Eyes. Pointof contact is 416-894-1305 CrystalBeach, Ontario. (Cassette reviewed)

Sawyer Brown is up with the box officeleaders, a rare happening for a country act.Poll star's Concert Pulse (March 18/91) lists theCapitol band as #22 on its list of 50. The band, which has toured from coast to coast in Canada, enjoy an average gross of $44,316 for theirconcerts. One Less Pony, the band's currentcountry track, was taken from their Buick al-bum.

Rodney Lynds, a 30 -year old singer/song-writer from St. Catherines, Ontario, was soconcerned about the recent Middle East War,he wrote a song, With War (It Is No Game). Hetook the song which he envisions "through theeyes of a23 -year old soldier," into Sound StageNiagara. With co -producer Stephen Burnsideand engineer Dave Hall, Lynds produced thesession which has been released as a 7" vinylsingle on the Majestic label. Product can beobtained by calling Lynds at 416-687-8169.

Cranbrook's Ed King releases Driftin', hislatest 7" vinyl single on the Jennie label. Kinghas been in the country music business sincethe early sixties, where he worked eight hours aday as a body repairman and four nights a weekplaying Bill's Place in Birch Bay, Washington, the same bar Loretta Lynn got her start. He gotinto the business fulltime in 1964, heading upThe Showbuds, which ironically opened for

111101111: I d ;111111Dyanne Halliday and hubby David recentlyreturned from Mexico where the MWC record-ing artist performed in several clubs. One of thebig items in her club act was her latest track,Don't Worry Be Happy. Halliday's audiences, mostly Americans from Texas and California, were quite familiar with the song, having heardit on their local radio stations. Card mailoutswith the record to American country stationsgarnered several rewarding replies. KeithWard of KJBC in Midland, Texas, wrote, "Yourbeautiful... and sing good too!". "Good Song,"

A group of happy revelers at the Junos In Van-couver, MuchMuslc's Denise Donlon, MWC'sDyanne Halliday and The Good Brothers.

Out of country observers toThe top winner of this year's BX-93 CountryRoads Talent Search was Jacquie Henderson ofSt. Catherines, Ontario. Runner-up was GregHanna of London. Both will share the $7,000prize money of $3500 each.

Henderson, who has been playing guitarfor 12 years, has performed as a single actlocally, and placed second in the 1989 BudCountry Talent Search. As well as taking thisyear's BX-93 Country Roads Talent SearchHenderson will represent the station at the 1991Bud Talent Search in Hamilton in September.John Meissen of the Zevenbergeh Music Fes-tival of Holland was so impressed with Hender-son that he invited her to Holland to perform atthe two-day festival to be held June 15 and 16as BX-93's and Canada's representative.

Runner-up Hanna is currently enrolled inthe Music Industry Arts Program at FanshaweCollege. He has been singing and playing gui-tar for a number of years.

wrote Ed Lee from KITE Waco, Texas. Alsofrom Midland4and KRIL, Ed Betts says "GoodSong", and Carl Eisler of ICULM in Austin says,"Production Good . .. a good song!". In Canadathe reaction has also been impressive. "Greatversion of the original. We like it." ChrisHebert of CFSM Halifax. Trevor Douglas ofCKUR Regina writes, "This woman has verystrong potential." From Bill Sleaver of CHMOMoosonee, "Just great Dyanne. Keep 'emcoming." The single is now charting nationallyin Canada, the follow-up to Crazy In Love WithYour Man, which enjoyed twenty weeks ofnational charting last year.

Carroll Baker has a hit out of the box withher newest CD single from Tembo. The CD5features her latest track, I Should Have Put AHold On Love, which was written by Baker andVancouver's Terry Frewer. Mike Francis pro-duced at Toronto's Inception Studios. Thetrack is included on Baker's album, Her FinestCollection. BX-93 talent searchSpecial guest judges as this year's show

included Grammy Award winner Jon Veznerand Katherine Dines of the Nashville Songwrit-ers' Association International. Vezner andDines were in London attending a songwritingseminar as part of BX-93 's Master Class Series.

This was the 11th annual talent search forBX-93 and one of the best from an attendancestandpoint, prompting the station's ProgramDirector, Ian McCallum, to say, "This year'sshow was the best yet. Our visitors from Hol-land and Nashville were so impressed by notonly the high quality of the talent, but theprofessionalism the entire show." Bill Oja critical ofCCMA Nashville policyBill Oja, who, through his Southwestern On-tario Happenings column in the Country MusicNews, is one of the self-appointed watchdogsof the Canadian country music industry. Con-troversial and informative as always, Oja firesoff another salvo at his favourite target theCanadian Country Music Association(CCMA).

In his March column, Oja points out that"CCMA members dollars (sponsorship moneyentrusted with the CCMA) that should be usedto develop Canadian talent is going to pay tosend nine CCMA executives and three countryacts to Nashville to try to impress Americandeejays," at the Country Radio Seminar '91.

Acts being showcased are The GoodBrothers and Anita Peras from Savannah Rec-ords and Patricia Conroy, a Warner Music act.

"Just the same as last year's contingent,"says Oja, "ten executives and three acts ... andnot a single U.S. release to show from thecurrent crop."

Oja goes on to reveal that "An estimated$150,000 comes into the CCMA's CountryTalent Development Fund from governmentand corporate grants and they spend a bigchunk of it trying to impress U.S. radio pro-grammers at a Nashville Luncheon." Oja sug-gests that "most of these radio people won'teven remember the names of the three Cana-dian acts they saw and heard when they get totheir stations."

Oja also raises the question that if the U.S.programmers were impressed would productbe available, suggesting that even if productwas available, "would the station's policy al-low them to play the records if they were not ona major U.S. label?
